Yeah, there are rules for each individual lift. If you snatch a lift in the clean and jerk, it will be turned down. The rules state that the clean and jerk must be two distinct lifts. There are ways to disqualify a clean and jerk besides not getting it overhead. If your elbows touch your knees in the clean, no lift, if you press out the jerk, no lift, if you dip and don't jerk, then try again, no lift. Those are the ones at the top of my head.

These

also, in the clean the bar must go from floor to shoulders in one motion with no pauses i.e.; you can't pause/hesitate at the hang position and then complete the lift, it will be turned down.

Yes, I see it at least once a year. I have also been called on it once.

You are allowed to catch a clean where ever you want, power, half-squat, full squat, wherever.

So this morning I was doing snatches which always were a thorn in my side, they got in my head and always effected my lift.

Today I went in with absolutely no hesitations and I nailed one with speed I have never felt before! it was like the bar was in mid air.....sweeet:D

So much of Ol'ing is mental it's unreal.

I agree. I have a mental block on snatches right now and it sucks. just need to go in with confidence and hit the weights because i know I can do it, i just need to get my head in the game and execute.

well simple answer to that is reps... do the 80% over and over to get the form perfect then nudge it up to higher percentages...

ahh ripped my first callus today ever lifting, and happened during a power snatch. Never torn callus doing deadlis or bent over rows ext. But man the speed when moving weight like in the snatch hands get beat up.

Great feeling doing snatch though its like when do the lift with decent form doesn't even feel like you had to really try everything just fires at once and bar is up over your head in one movement.

like in squat bench or deadlift have to really strain to get a big lift and feel it in muscles a lot. Yet with the oly lifts when hit a big lift happens so quickly don't even really feel like your trying its weird but cool feeling.

John chose to pick fights with people on FI, the Oly section here, and GoHeavy (oh, and a couple of other sites that I forget the name of just now). He also insults people on YouTube and acts like he's infallible there, too. He carries a chip on his shoulder, is insulting, refuses to listen to any contrary opinions, and comes across like he thinks he is god. The PL forum here is the only place that he'll stay, because it's (mostly) a bunch of impressionable, inexperienced powerlifters with no knowledge about Olympic lifting whatsoever fellating him and stroking his ego, telling him he's a genius and the savior of American lifting, etc etc etc.

The guy's been coaching just over ONE year, has 2 awesome lifters that he recruited after they already had proven they were perhaps the strongest teenagers in the country. Mendes hasn't come within 25kg of his best gym lifts in a meet, and is pretty much always injured, according to reports from Broz himself and others who have been to his gym. Adell, Broz has said in his thread, hasn't even completely committed to Oly lifting, and juggles football alongside it, which reinforces the point that he's not even training "Bulgarian" style regularly and is simply perhaps one of the strongest kids in the country. He also failed to come remotely close to his gym lifts in a meet, and of course had excuses ready after Juniors.

That's all fine, since every lifter has injuries and doesn't always lift up to potential, but... Broz acts like a dick and treats people like garbage wherever he posts (unless they stroke his ego and fellate him repeatedly), and apparently can't engage reasonable, intelligent Olympic lifters or coaches in any sort of debate or productive discussion. In other words, he's your basic 14-year-old Internet idiot, who happens to be 41 and in charge of some really fantastic, amazing lifters.

To treat him like some sort of programming god and censor any dissent is ridiculous, immature, and insulting to the rest of us.

I repeat: give Mendes and Adell to any reasonably competent coach in this country and let them train them for a year. Do you really think they'd be lifting any less than they already are? If so, how much less and why? What specifically is Broz doing differently that makes his methods more effective? Perhaps another coach could have kept Mendes healthy the whole year and he'd be JERKING 240 by now.

Just sayin' :)

Amen.

I tried to bring a balance to the Broz training influence on my forum and Broz came over and attacked me. He had no interest in talking man to man about applications for powerlifting, the eccentrics aspects of powerlifting training versus Olynmpic lifting, etc. The only thing he did was insult me...

I have been treated better by 12 year olds. I simply tried to balance the conversation about powerlifting applications and was insulted.

I realize he isn't a powerlifting coach, but our discussion was about powerlifting. He stepped in and ran his mouth, literally calling everyone from Simmons to Wendler foolish.

Nah, he's overtraining and getting weaker, same thing with Glenn Pendlay's lifters. The three guys he's sending to the Pan Ams are definitely overtrained. Don't make me start with all these Chinese and Kazakh lifters. The higher numbers are just an illusion.

Since switching to an american periodisation program my snatch has dropped 15kg and I feel definitely undertrained so I must be on the right track!

don't worry in a year when you lift something over 80% you'll be able to do it fresh and you'll make a big pr! if you don't you need to work on your technique since it's obviously not ingrained with the heavy weights no point in going heavy ever if its not ingrained like walking! more work with the bar, shoott a broomstick would be better wouldn't want you working too hard too many days a week! actual training that works is only for the pros, are you a pro? didn't think so

Yep that's the way it goes.

You either max 3 times a day, every day, or only go over 80% once a year (cuz that's how periodization works).

Obviously only one method is the "right" method, and it's right for EVERYONE; whether they are elite or have only been doing the lifts for 3 months - there is only one way to train weightlifting!! Although it would still be interesting to see what "the method" will do for guys who aren't the strongest in the country before training that way...

There is no in between!!

C'mon, we love to argue!

JLC I'm not saying there's only one method. All I'm saying is you need to do the full competition lifts and you need to them heavy frequently. The snatch more so than the clean and jerk.

Extreme end of spectrum: My current coach says only max at competition every 12 weeks. This program has only worked most noticeably for one lifter, Robert Murphy. Everything is assistance, once a week do one of the competition lifts to less than max.

Middle ground: LSUS. Max out every Saturday with various rep ranges in the competition lifts, rest of week is maxing high rep ranges in assistance lifts. Kendrick Farris is a prime example.

Middle ground level 2: Chinese. Always max out on squats and once or twice a week max out competition lifts, rest of week is slightly less than max assistance work in low reps. Hypertrophy assistance included.

Extreme end level 1: Glenn Pendlay. Max out competition lifts and back squats nearly every day, do some volume after each. Assistance work included. Some hypertrophy assistance. Look at Caleb Ward, Jon North, and Donny Shankle for results.

Extreme end level 2: Broz. Max out competition lifts every day and back squat, do a ton of volume after. No assistance work. Very little hypertrophy assistance. Pat Mendes and Rob Adell.

Extreme end level infinity: Modern Abadjiev. Max out only snatch and clean and jerk. Only perform front squat to max with no back squats. No volume after just more and more maximum sessions. The last Bulgarians trained by Abadjiev; a few american lifters when he came to US.

Sorry, I should have quoted who I was addressing (not you). I love how well-versed you are with a variety of approaches, and that you actually try them out. I also like how you're not nearly as adamant or disciple-like as others, even though you personal experience with these methods.

Fact of the matter is that the only thing that counts is your current competition total.

And if your current comp total increases 5kg from training light periodization rarely hitting heavy lifts do that.

If you try heavy balls to the wall and your total goes down 5kg don`t do it

The opposite applies.

Then if you try a middle ground and add 8kg to your total do that.

ect ect

Finally snatched 235 lbs! I have made extremely close attempts with 235 and 240 for a month. I even locked out 240 twice overhead and dropped it before standing all the way up. I haven't posted in a while but other recent PRs include an easy 305 behind neck jerk, 405 double overhand deadlift (no straps), a double overhand 605 4 inch pull from blocks (no straps), and a 325 back squat. I was really surprised with my grip strength on the pulls. I hooked gripped the 605 and held it for a few seconds at the top. Grip strength definitely not a limiting factor. I always wondered why people complained of pain with hook grip, I never had a problem with it. The rack pulls DID hurt though lol, and discolored my thumbs and wore a patch raw on my palms. I don't think I will plan on ever staggering my grip with deadlifts as long as hooking gets me by. I don't like asymmetry in lifting lol.

I always cringe at callus injuries. Yuch!

I know what you mean about the lifts. Obviously you are exerting hard, but it's too short to feel uncomfortable and by the time you get under the bar it's like you already forgot what happened. Cleans are different, I get under the bar and then try for like 10 seconds to stand up. That's when it feels like I am trying lol.

Snatching 235, hmmmm.....I can't even fathom that!

nice work.

That's when it feels like I am trying lol.

yeah feel same way due to the weight load being much more in clean, also its two parts so when all that weight resting on your shoulders you feel it and nervous 'like **** this is heavy now have to drive it overhead'

yet with snatch weight usually not huge amount-compared to your strength- and you can usually stand up with any weight you can get over head.-assuming caught in balanced position- Plus its a faster lift due to moving the weight greater distance so feel it even less.

Finally snatched 235 lbs! I have made extremely close attempts with 235 and 240 for a month. I even locked out 240 twice overhead and dropped it before standing all the way up. wow I'd expect with those #'s like 235snatch and 300+ btn jerk you would have atleast around 405 squat. You must have some crazy explosive power, good lifts.

Well hook grip was really painful for a few weeks but then again everyone has different levels of pain tolerance ext. But when adrenalin pumping when lifting big weight you tend to not forget about the minor thumb pain heh.

I have very poor leverages in the squat. I am very weak at parallel due to my long femurs. I never get pinned at the bottom, I seem to rise up fast till above parallel then get stuck. Once I get past the sticking point I can then pop the weight up off my shoulders, hence the behind neck jerk. For example check out this vid with 317.5 lol. Aside from leverage issues, I wonder if half squats or goodmornings might strengthen that area? Or a change in form, i.e. wider stance?

might try having the bar little lower on traps to help your leverage. Maybe little wider also, though yeah odd your squat is low in comparison to your btn jerk and snatch and even clean-saw your old video of 260 easy clean your probably good for over 300.

For one it would help if you spent less time preparing with the actually weight on you. Mentally prepare yourself before you lift the weight. Half squats? No forget that nonsense. If you want a better squat then squat. Prioritize them and really hammer the volume.

p.s. watch at your own risk. I forgot to rotate the videos in movie maker. I take no responsibility if you hurt your neck by watching it sideways.

wouldn't have my arms out like that for front squat

I would not have my hands out like that for the back squat

little butt wink on both even with the low weight, would get worse with heavy weight got to keep yourself more tight in the bottom. Depth as perfectly fine not sure why think your going to get few more inches that looked as deep as your body naturally could go right now.

that weight was WEAK for you, hard to tell form problems with such easy weight you could probably rep out 50x.

I was just goofing around with the hand positions. I do not normally squat like that. I was more or less just testing my flexibility with this video, because I am always trying to improve it.

Got the old OATZ N' SQUATZ! didja?

Watched my first competition Saturday, learned a lot. I saw someone get a red light for elbows hitting the knees on a clean & jerk. Think I *finally* figured out the numerous things I'm doing wrong with snatches (most of it was back position and lifting initially with my arms instead of legs). Now to just properly execute it. Have a good day everyone!

Off to make my oatmeal. :p

the sticking point is always the hardest. just keep doing full squats to strengthen that area or do isometric holds at that joint angle (i dont fully recommend it but it does help though at the cost of speed).still nice squat

Haha, yeah I got flamed and negged for saying oatmeal was a worthless food. In my opinion it is. All of the nutrients is oatmeal I can get elsewhere in better amounts and without the lectin and unnecessary carbs.

ANYWAY

I was doing that today and it was driving me nuts!! @ 250 I could clean it, but kept hitting my left elbow on my knee. I've noticed that when I do this it's always my left elbow. I breezed though 225-235-245 without a belt. A lot of it is just mental, i.e. concentrating on keeping my elbows up and not getting lazy in the hole. I do the same thing on snatches which causes me to miss.

Overall today was great though! I Snatched 200 without straps for the first time, breezed through 185/190/195, got 200 with no straps on the first attempt.

Just polished off a dinner of NY strip topped with onions and a scrambled egg and bacon, bit of steamed potatoes and milk.

MAN FOOD.

One of my friends from back home who I have known since elementary school and I consider to be a good friend even though I haven't spoken with him a lot in the past few years is become a personal trainer at a crossfit gym. This kid has always been athletic, but hes also always been kinda fat. I guess he has lost close to like 75-100 pounds while on crossfit, so props to him, that is VERY impressive and i am VERY happy for him. (to me this is proof that crossfit can work, they just suck at the quick lifts)

Recently he sent me one of those facebook page things for his crossfit gym, and I clicked it just to check it out. Some of the videos are pretty good, it seems like most of the clients for their gym are kinda out of shape middle aged moms and dads who work. BUT the thing I have noticed is any O-lift they do is with absolutely HORRENDOUS technique. (what else is new crossfit?) I have also seem vids of him doing cleans, and they are not bad, but the needs some serious help as well.

Should I send him an e-mail telling him his form and his clients forms sucks? and that I need to come help him? or should I just keep my trap shut?

Theres a crossfitter at my gym with the same issues, absolutely horrible form (up on toes on front squats somehow, like 1/8th ROM on everything). It pains me to watch him workout with that form, but at the same time he has prob close to 100lbs more on the bar than I use (insert "I could rep that much doing 1/8th squats too probably" here).

I have wanted to say something, but at the same time I feel like its almost best to not be "that guy". Also, the general consensus is that crossfitters have somewhat of an elitist attitude, and would probably only listen to other crossfit people.

Keep your trap shut. Like almost all similar situations in life, no matter what you say, people will take offense and become defensive. If you are really good friends it's your call. He will likely not appreciate your help, unless he sees you as an expert in the field.

The program has managed to drop my snatch from 90kg to 70kg in about two months. I have no idea what his response will be; I have nowhere else to go but commercial gyms to squat if he says no.

For reference, the first day there he told us, "I am the dictator of this gym; you play by my rules."

Still no good job offers in Vegas and been applying like a mad man.

I really do think if you give him a choice of either his lifters doing well in comps versus just doing what he wants he'd make the smart choice, if he doesn't just flip him the bird and be done with it just do squat, deadlift, press, back work and other strength stuff for a while; even mezzie and gewaltinger did O-lifts in commercial gyms and they turned out ok I still think thats an option though

Live with parents, no money, and no space to do it.

Talked with the coach today, he said to email him what I was doing when I snatched 90 and he'll "figure something out". He's probably going to flip the hell out... I'll keep everyone posted. My ideal program there that I don't think he would hind too crazy would be:
M-Heavy single sn + vol, max Cl
T-PSn vol , Cl vol
W-Heavy single sn + vol, max J
Th-PSn vol , J vol
F-off
S-Max sn, max C+J, max fs

I remember seeing a chart for like what the general % of your power lifts should be to full lifts and back squat to front squat ext. Does anyone know these? Curious to see them to judge my technique improvement.

Also do any of you guys do plyometrics with your oly lifting weekly if not daily? Trying to introduce some plyometrics stuff other then just box jumps looking for ideas.

Also does anyone have an idea how to build those things that a lot of oly lifters use when doing jerks to hold the weight up so easier to do multipe reps?

Let's put it this way. He emails the program to us for the week, then we show up at 7pm and do the program. Coaches other athletes at that same time that pay a lot for the personal training for other sports. Not really coaching the weightlifters, but if you start to deviate from the program he yells at you. I don't pay a fee because I help him coach people for free and build/fix stuff for him, teammates pay around $40/month.

Good lift, but a couple of pointers (just my opinion, though). Try not to sit over the bar for so long (30 seconds is really long). Also, there is a little arm pull through the middle, just past the knees. I second the bar looking really short, unless you have really long arms or something!! :D

Making continuous snatches like that can be a big boost to confidence! Thats some heavy weight too. Whats your recent best? What % is 110 for you? I might be able to do 10 singles with like 92%. I am not too consistent though. Probably take me 16 tries :)

Definitely. Before that, the most Ive done with 110 is 7 singles, and before that, maybe 4. The most Ive done is 120 twice, but its not consistent. So Im working with 90%+ and just repping it out until I get consistent enough that 120 isnt an issue and I can move on to real weight. Ill move to 115 for singles once I feel that 110 is mastered weight, then build up until I can snatch 115 pretty continuously.

That's 12-15 weeks from competition. Saturdays are pretty much same all the time, max out O-lifts, volume work, then max out front squat 1-3RM.

3-4wks doing this phase, 10's [for 10RMs]
3-4wks doing 5's, like last phase but more O-lifts split up
3wks doing 3's, some strength lifts, a lot more O-lifts split up and complete lifts
1-2wks peaking, mostly complete O-lifts some strength work
1wk taper only O-lifts and front squat, Saturday is competition

Was anyone else really surprised to see Kendrick's training routine? I found it pretty strange, with all the 10RM lifts. I have experimented with 10RM lifts in the past. My speed definitely didn't benefit, and my 1RM strength tanked.

Also, he only does actual Olympic lifts once per week. I just wouldn't have expected that at all, especially with his technique and speed, which is amazing.

Maybe it's true what they say, that weightlifting is only 30-40% training. The rest is nutrition, recovery, and genetics.

these high volume programs with more assistance and less competition lifting seem to work pretty well for the clean, while having a really solid snatch and jerk seem to depend a bit more on frequent practice with max weights. just my uneducated impression

Agreed. I cut out most of the assistance lifts besides heavy pulls. I'm snatching 5 days a week, full clean & jerk 2-3 days. For snatching, I've found that nothing else really helps other than going heavy and doing it often. I do pulls to help my strength off the floor and maintain good position since when the weights get heavy I let the bar get a little too far away.

4 PRs Yesterday!!!

Snatch 210 lbs -- feelsgoodman.jpg

Back Squat 310 -- 315 -- 320

*my previous best squat was 305. I pushed it up by 15 pounds. 320 was actually fairly smooth. I finally squatted 3 plates!!

Earlier this week -- Front Squat PRs -- 285, 290, 295

very nice!

gives me motivation! my squat numbers are only a little behind yours, but your Total dominates mine. I need to work harder! grrrr

what's everyone's opinion on chiropractors?

that's a very tiny bar or at the camera makes it look that way

its probably the camera angle. i ,physically, measured the bar which was about 7' long.

Good lift, but a couple of pointers (just my opinion, though). Try not to sit over the bar for so long (30 seconds is really long). Also, there is a little arm pull through the middle, just past the knees. I second the bar looking really short, unless you have really long arms or something!! :D

i actually do. i can wrap my hands on the collar during snatches with pleanty of room to spare its just i choose not to. but im not tall though. it must be genetics. it is an olympic (45lb) bar though.

i agree with u. i do full snatch & clean and jerks every training session so i can work on the lifts as much as possible.

It's not a 'clean', more of a reverse curl, and the 'press' was barely half ROM.

yeah its in the catch for me also not sure if extending it too hard or something it hurts a bit when I extend it and there is resistance like in say skull crusher exercise. Also hurts when I touch it. I might not snatch for a week just do high pulls and cleans and see if feels better. Do some curls also as never do biceps other then pull ups.

Also did 20 reps of 225 (body weight) on the squat. Hertz bad. Probably try this once a week adding 5 or 10 lbs each time. 275 x 20 would be cool.

I wear them in all my shoes, I have a separate pair that I leave in my weightlifting shoes so that I'm never without them when lifting - they help a lot!

I don't know how insurance works for you in the states, but my student health coverage covered I think 85% of the cost, so they were definitely worth it!

I did BRUTAL at nationals...

69kg - 8th place
Snatch -
95
100x (totally cut the 2nd pull short like an idiot and missed in front)
100

CJ -
126x (turned down 2 to 1 for a pressout)
127x (turned down 2 to 1 for a pressout)
127
Sinclair - 304
I don't want to shift blame - 126 and 127 are weights I should jerk in my SLEEP - but the pressouts were borderline at best, and had I been from Quebec or in a later session with less fresh judges I think all my jerks would have passed.

For the last few weeks leading up to the comp I wasn't feeling great during training though. My technique felt off and I just generally felt like I had symptoms of bad overtraining... tired no matter how much I slept, loss of appetite, irritability, depression, mental fog.

Anyway, I'm almost happy it's over with so I can relax a bit during summer... maybe even do some bench 'n arms! haha

Dave I feel you Team Ontario didn't put up much of a performance except Buck and Kayla Turner really.. Anyways I'm back at it 100% in the gym did 105/130 yesterday and hit 100 then 110 pc pj after and did some push press along with a 170kg back squat both days

Next week I start back on my program which Im stoked about watch out for 115/145 @ 85kg in August!

------

My nationals:

bottom line

snatch 102 106x 106x
clean and jerk 123 127 132x

Here's my thoughts on it:
I didn't hit 110/140 far from it, but at the same time I learned a lot about my mental game and even though it's pretty good I still have some work on it, I realize that I need to just get stronger of the floor and I'll be fine. To be honest I don't have any excuses for not doing my best lifts, I had a chance to and I missed it. I learned that if I want to become a weight lifter I can't come to a meet in shape and not hit good numbers.

I'm looking at it like 360 days out of proving myself as a legitimate weightlifter now and that's what I'm going to do

ON is mostly whey protein concentrate, which is much cheaper and causes bloating and lactose issues for some people. Protein is protein to me, but I don't want to feel bloated and gassy drinking this stuff 3-4 times a day so I justified the extra few bucks for the cold filtration isolate.

In terms of prices, the 5lbs came out to about $50 shipped. I put in a lower quality mix like ON's and the price is still cheaper at like $40 shipped.

Takes time. I did separate snatch/clean workouts for a good year or two before I could comfortably do both on the same day and still have energy for auxiliary lifts/squats.

Definitely, when I first started to build up to daily maxes it took a few weeks. The good news is once you go through that phase of daily maxes, even if you have a long layoff of not doing them, the adapting time becomes much shorter because the brain still has the adaptations to the nerve structure from before.

A focking AMAZING thread going on here talking about high frequency training: http://www.pendlayforum.com/showthread.php?t=2373

"The acquisition of skilled movement induces a reorganization of neural circuitry within motor cortex that supports the production and refinement of skilled movement sequences. "

"Learning to display strength is an actual skill. In a practical sense, the act of reproducing a skill (Snatch @ 50%max) is very specific and different than reproducing the skill with maximal force (Snatch @ 100%max) at the neural level."

Cliffs: Strength increases can happen with lower weight and volume but displaying 100% strength is a SKILL which must be practiced by lifting 100% weights as it builds the brain's structure to lift 100% weight.

Cliffs: Strength increases can happen with lower weight and volume but displaying 100% strength is a SKILL which must be practiced by lifting 100% weights as it builds the brain's structure to lift 100% weight.

Interesting Ill have to read through that thread a little latter. I will start trying to do the lifts everyday now instead of 3x a week and just see how it goes.

Just work up to a max and move on to the next lift. Add in the volume work 3x week when you feel comfortable, after a while you just regulate it, to doing max and volume everyday but sometimes you feel crappy so you just do volume or just do a max. Or if you feel slow that day do powers. Weak legs, do pull and jerk. Feel good, max + volume. Feel great, just max.

Do any of you guys have one wrist that is more mobile/flexible than the other?
