Running Past Rehab. My Journey Back to Lifting

Backround

Pre-Injury

I've been playing rugby since the age of 13 and once I made the junior team started gym sessions with the team, 3 times a week. I think I was about 15 then. Me and a couple of friends got big into the lifting and that's pretty much how I started.

Injury
Dislocated my shoulder out on the pitch 2 years ago. I had a month off and was told to return to hospital if a reoccurance every happened. I carried on playing rugby and lifting after the month off but during those 2 years I dislocated the shoulder another 3 times.
It was quite literally falling out. The most fragile strain endangered a dislocation. I neglected any medical attention until the last time. The shoulder muscle completley locked up, putting me in severe pain and my friend had to call his dad (paramedic). He set it back in place and gave me a real earfull for not getting help with it. He booked me into an appointment with a specalist and I had to wait a year for an operation (Bad Irish health system). I had the operation last April.

Pre-Op

I was told to quit lifting and any contact sports during that year pre-op'. My coach wouldn't let me play rugby but I'd just gotten my own bench and weight set so I carried on lifting :)
I wasn't doing any cardio and I could feel myself losing fitness

Post-op'

After the operation I had two months off from work. The worst two months of my life. Everyone at home was at work or at school during the day so I'd wake up to an empty house. All my friends were at college so they weren't around. I found myself settling into a bad routine of late morning, ordering take away and playing Call of Duty/Miscing. I was told I wouldn't be able to lift weights until at least Novemeber and even then I'd have to pace myself. I used that as an excuse to justify my bad diet. Naturally I lost a bit of muscle and gained a couple of pounds of fat. I realy got into the whole bum thing which didn't help when I went back to work. I was so lazy I wouldn't bother making my lunch. I'd either go to the deli or McDonalds.

Rehab
I start my physiotherapy tomorrow.
I met with my physiotherapist last Friday. Yvonne, she's dead on and we got talking. Told her I've gained a lot of fat during the past couple of months and that I really wonna hit the gym as soon as possible. She's was really understanding but told me I have a long way to go. She says that she won't be able to give me a date as to when I get back into the gym until we have a couple of physio sessions together. What was cool was that she got me an appointment with one of the nutritionist at the hospital. I meet with them on Wednsday.
In the mean time to lose some of this weight and regain some fitness I've decided to take up running.

Running

A friend of mine is training for the Dublin marathon and the Leinster cross country races. I've asked him for some advice and he rescheduled some of his evening runs so that I can join him. He told me to invest in a Nike+ kit. So I'm gonna post some of my weekly graphs on here.
If I can hit three runs a week, along with my physio and work I'll be happy.

The Long Run

I wonna be consistant in my running for October and hopefully get back in the gym for Novemeber. If I can lift to failure by the New Year I'd be more than happy but baby steps guys.

Note to readers

If anybody as had any simpliar shoulder injuries please let me know how long your rehab lasted and how it feels now?
Also, if anybody's on the Nike+ network please post your username in this thread or PM me. I hear it's great if you can get a small online community together.

Updates??

Ye brah sorry. Last two weeks have been busy ta' ****!

First week went ok.
I had my physio which is really bent. It's just strech work basicalyand right now my shoulder isn't in good shape (serious). I've had a constant pain in it the whole of this weekend. But the first two weeks of physio have been a bore. So much so that I've been doing a bit of boxing training on the side (physio don't know). A mate of mine is big into judo and asked me to spot him out in the gym. Me being me had to get involved :) a little.
But as I mentioned the shoulders in a bad, bad way. So much so that I've booked an eariler appointment with my surgeon just to safe. Don't wonna tell the physio about it!! Rather go through hell then tell her cause she's so fuking nice.

Fifa 10 came out the end of my first week so I've been working on strenghting my Ipswich team over my legs, haha!
Then last week I was swamped at work, seriously swamped with so much ****. Short staffed, deliveries and bookkeeping problems really wore me out. I went over to Bristol with a couple of mates last weekend for the Bristol Rovers V Leeds game but that was cancelled and we only found out on the Saturday. Still we made the most of that trip.

I've just come in from a run man. Three guys I know (2 training for the Dublin marathon) invited me up to Greystones Rugby pitch for a couple laps. I got up after work and they'd already fuking started. I know I'm unfit but not this unfit. See for yourself.

I got gym tomorrow, aiming to do cardio and get a decent ab workout in. Going with some chick which is never fun :( Wednsday I'm working late and got physio. Thursday and Friday evenings I got another two runs and Saturday is a morning of physio. I don't know how Im gonna get through that physio without letting slip that my shoulder is uncomfortable. I'm not supose to do anything involving putting a strain on the shoulder and I really think those boxing sessions did something too it. I don't see the surgeon until next Monday so fingers crossed the shoulder will settle down before then :)

I'll post up again on Sunday. I'll do a proper post too not this essay crap.

To summarise. Diet has been healthy these past two weeks, cardio has been poor, physio has been a bore. Shoulder = pain. :)

Writing for Last Week:
Tuesday

-Went to some new gym (lol, it's about a year old :)) down the road from me.
Did about 45 minutes worth of cardio, didn't enjoy.
Then went through some old rugby drills. Stuff that works the core. I actually enjoyed that and lost track of time. Chick I went to the gym with actually came over to me TWICE to ask if I was finished so we could go. Needless to say I won't be going back to gym with her again.

(The pain I had in my shoulder had subsided, but I was still concerned)

Wednsday

-I had to stay on til closing in work.
Then I spent the evening doing physio. Simple stuff that I could of easily done at home. Simple movements and different speeds. Get the feeling she's still trying to excess the injury.

Thursday

-Hit out another run with a mate and his Dad. They took it at a nice pace and I was thankful for that. Now and then they'd look over at me to see how I was doing and I appreicated that. Got a couple of pats on the back when we'd finished and I took every single one with a smile on my face :) It wasn't a tough run but a quiet run (I forgot me ipod) so I found it hard to drown out the fatigue.

Friday

-Cancelled run and went out to the pub :(
Deserved it, trust me. Work has been a killer all week!

Saturday

-Physio.
Again the same old crap. She was happy with the progress and said we'll be adding some resistance to it next week. She's also encouraged me to do swimming, breast stroke only.
Think I'll give that a wirl.

Monday:

-Appointment with surgeon, told me it was natural to feel some discomfort while doing physio. By Wednsday the pain had completleysubsided :)

This Week

Aim to get two runs, two sessions in the pool with two sessions in the gym done this week.
Not to forget about my physio. Good week!

Week 4 MotherFUKER!

Feeling Great Brahs. Best week so far and Imma tell you why.
Started swimming. Physiotherapist recommended I try do a couple of lenghts when I go to the gym. Only breast stroke though. Now I recon I ain't been in a pool for about a year and as soon as I got in I was thinking "this is gonna be a right workout!". Must of been in the pool for a solid hour and a half. Just swimming the lenght again and again and again (there may of been a couple of rests in the jacuzzi though :D).

Monday

-Run (I'll post up the Nike+ graphs)
Went on a right cruise too, but I find the ipod really, really helps. Made a few decent playlists so I actually enjoy the runs.
Was keeping a decent pace for 40 minutes and ran the last couple. But was really pleased

Tuesday
-Physio
Doing some new **** and I've been given a crap load of stuff to do at home. It's great. She's really happy with how I'm comming along and recons I could get back into proper lifting by the end of November

Wednsday

Gym
Lotta core work. Felt like a muppet doing some of my drills on a medicine ball (all the medicine balls are in a light-weight corner of the gym, basically the corner for chicks :)).
Hit the pool (as I mentioned above).

Thursday

Had plans :)

Friday

Long as day at work
Managed to hit an early morning run with one of the lads who was training for the Dublin marathon. It was raining pretty bad but I actually felt like that helped, anybody else noticed this. Finished a couple of laps around my road and I was drenched afterwards but it really felt good.

Saturday

Physio :D
[i]Same old, same old[/b]

Sunday

Went swimming
Was with my lil' bro and his friends so it was more about making a splash and a laugh than working out

Just a little note guys:

It was the Dublin marathon yesturday and I knew a couple guys doing it. 2 of my good friends were doing it and you couldn't meet a nicer bunch.
One of them finished in just over 3 hours, his 3rd time doing the Dublin but he's big into running.
Other brah was doing his first marathon and he picked a motherfuker of a marathon to do :D
I think he ran something like 3 hours 47 minutes, he was aiming for 3hr 30minites. Still a hell of a result. Just wanted to mention that :)
