Running Past Rehab. My Journey Back to Lifting
Backround
Pre-Injury
I've been playing rugby since the age of 13 and once I made the junior team started gym sessions with the team, 3 times a week. I think I was about 15 then. Me and a couple of friends got big into the lifting and that's pretty much how I started.
Injury
Dislocated my shoulder out on the pitch 2 years ago. I had a month off and was told to return to hospital if a reoccurance every happened. I carried on playing rugby and lifting after the month off but during those 2 years I dislocated the shoulder another 3 times.
It was quite literally falling out. The most fragile strain endangered a dislocation. I neglected any medical attention until the last time. The shoulder muscle completley locked up, putting me in severe pain and my friend had to call his dad (paramedic). He set it back in place and gave me a real earfull for not getting help with it. He booked me into an appointment with a specalist and I had to wait a year for an operation (Bad Irish health system). I had the operation last April.
Pre-Op
I was told to quit lifting and any contact sports during that year pre-op'. My coach wouldn't let me play rugby but I'd just gotten my own bench and weight set so I carried on lifting :)
I wasn't doing any cardio and I could feel myself losing fitness
Post-op'
After the operation I had two months off from work. The worst two months of my life. Everyone at home was at work or at school during the day so I'd wake up to an empty house. All my friends were at college so they weren't around. I found myself settling into a bad routine of late morning, ordering take away and playing Call of Duty/Miscing. I was told I wouldn't be able to lift weights until at least Novemeber and even then I'd have to pace myself. I used that as an excuse to justify my bad diet. Naturally I lost a bit of muscle and gained a couple of pounds of fat. I realy got into the whole bum thing which didn't help when I went back to work. I was so lazy I wouldn't bother making my lunch. I'd either go to the deli or McDonalds.
Rehab
I start my physiotherapy tomorrow.
I met with my physiotherapist last Friday. Yvonne, she's dead on and we got talking. Told her I've gained a lot of fat during the past couple of months and that I really wonna hit the gym as soon as possible. She's was really understanding but told me I have a long way to go. She says that she won't be able to give me a date as to when I get back into the gym until we have a couple of physio sessions together. What was cool was that she got me an appointment with one of the nutritionist at the hospital. I meet with them on Wednsday.
In the mean time to lose some of this weight and regain some fitness I've decided to take up running.
Running
A friend of mine is training for the Dublin marathon and the Leinster cross country races. I've asked him for some advice and he rescheduled some of his evening runs so that I can join him. He told me to invest in a Nike+ kit. So I'm gonna post some of my weekly graphs on here.
If I can hit three runs a week, along with my physio and work I'll be happy.
The Long Run
I wonna be consistant in my running for October and hopefully get back in the gym for Novemeber. If I can lift to failure by the New Year I'd be more than happy but baby steps guys.
Note to readers
If anybody as had any simpliar shoulder injuries please let me know how long your rehab lasted and how it feels now?
Also, if anybody's on the Nike+ network please post your username in this thread or PM me. I hear it's great if you can get a small online community together.
