I have used asparagus for all my peak week preps. I can honestly say I noticed a considerable decrease in gut bloat and water retention.

Anyone else eat apsaragus during their peak week dieting?

It does have a diaretic effect to it, but I just dont see how it would only drop water from the sub-q. I eat asparagus all prep, just because I like it......that and the putrid smell to my pee. I just find that entertaining.

Chris, id be willing to bet the tightening of your mid section is due to the increase water intake/discharge and maybe a bit due to the sodium manipulation I know you do.

Actually there are studied confirming the bowel sorta cleansing attributes:

Food for Healthy Gut Flora

Asparagus contains a special kind of carbohydrate called inulin that we don't digest, but the health-promoting friendly bacteria in our large intestine, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, do. When our diet contains good amounts of inulin, the growth and activity of these friendly bacteria increase. And when populations of health-promoting bacteria are large, it is much more difficult for unfriendly bacteria to gain a foothold in our intestinal tract.

Asparagus have detoxifying and diuretic effects. Their fibers help us clean out our gastrointestinal tract. They also help the body get rid of the excess water.
Asparagus also contains the phytochemical glutathione, which has antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties.

good to know. I guess if your bowels are cleaned out, the mid section decreases a bit, eh?

to be honest when I'm trying to get my muscles as full and hydrated as possible with water and carbs, a fibrous vegetable with diuretic qualities would be on the bottom of my list

Although this is my first contest, I've actually dropped all veggies during my moderate carb load and opted for more complex sources of carbohydrates : sweets, oats. I'll let you know how it works :).

I eat the chit out of asparagus from start to finish. Not only is it outstanding for you, but is a natural diuretic. Rock on the asparagus!
