I'm competing this Saturday, will begin applying Jan Tana show tan tomorrow. I have a deep base tan already. I did it 20 years ago, but all we had then was something called Dye o Derm and you almost had to sandblast it off, no worries of smearing etc.
But I read that the Show tan washes off with a couple of showers. My question is, will it smear when I put oil on? Also, between the prejudging and night show, should I rinse off the oil, maybe put another coat of show tan on? Also, guys wear thick heavy shirts to sweat / bring out vascularity etc. Stands to reason if it will wash of with a shower, heavy sweating might make it run or smear.
My conditioning is dead on (right now) and i don't want to screw it up with some stupid mishap regarding the tan. I followed the advice of a friend in figure comp that told me to get the show tan, she looked great, but I'm just paranoid. HELP !

I can tell you what I did with my shows that worked for me. I used Jan Tana high definition color-not the 10 minute real dark stuff but the hi definition color. It comes with a fuzzy sponge and goes on like a dream IMO. It comes out the consistency of mousse-looks just like chocolate mousse. The trick is to shower before you start applying. Use NO lotions, creams deodorants or ANYTHING. Just plain skin. You probably already know this. It will interact with other chemicals and turn your skin green-not good.
Side note, it is good to use a loofa sponge in the shower prior to application-think exfoliation-especially elbows, knees, heels etc.
Anyways, I usually start after weighing in on friday pm. Shower and apply first coat. Wait hour or two and put on another. Let it dry before laying down etc. I put on an old pair of baggy pants and an old long sleeve t shirt to sleep in. Put down an old sheet or something cuz some of it will rub off. Fortunately the stuff will wash out of most things.
I applied another coat sat am. Let dry for 1 hour or two before putting on suit. I wore a dark t shirt and dark baggy pants over my suit with sandals to the prejudging. About an hour before your class is to go onstage take off the clothes and "touch up" the color with the fuzzy sponge. The stuff is great for not streaking or running. I do know that I had to touch up a few spots where I splattered a little water on myself from brushing my teeth and fixing my hair. It touches up nicely. You can use a little lotion on your fingertips and toes to help "blend in" the color and help prevent your hands and feet from looking "dirty".
Don't use lotion anywhere else though.
I oiled up using regular oil with one show and the other show I used the jan tana glaze which I thought was much better-not sure how to describe "better" but I think it just looked better than regular oil. It did not smear when applying oil. After prejudging was over I had to dab at my underarms where you could tell I had perspired. But the stuff blends well-at least it did with me. If you start sweating alot just dab with a towel-it worked ok for me. I had a towel in my hand all the way up until I walked on stage.
I didn't rinse off or anything in between morning and night. I felt really gross but I guess thats just part of it. I did the same thing for the night show. 1 hour before I would go through a touch up routine, pump up, bikini bite the edges of my suit and oil up. That would take me around and hour-might take less for you.
As far as washing off. A lot of it washed off in the shower. Took several scrubbings and a 30 minute shower. It will leave a nice "tan" all over for about 4 days or so. You will lose a little with each successive shower. Then after that you will get a little of the "leprosy" look for several days. If you really need the stuff to come off then use a loofa sponge and scrub like the dickens. Still, it takes a while to get it all completely off but it doesn't look as bad as if you had used protan. Actually I used it for two shows back to back two weekends in a row. It worked just fine and looked great.
Hope this helps-the skin stuff is the scarey part for me too. Holler if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Thanks. I'm assured it will work okay, but just using logic, if the stuff washes off "easily" seems like it would sweat off easily too. I'll prob put on at least 2 coats before I drive to the city the show is in (3 hours away) then do a 3rd coat after weigh in, or maybe the next morning.
just anxiety. Last time i did this I was 22 years old, had no cares in the world, except college and a part time job. Now kids, work, home with everything broken and in need of repair because I have spent 2 - 3 hours in the gym, tanning, and posing the last 2 months 6 days a week. I better kick A$$ at this thing!

You'll do fine. I used Jan Tana stuff for the first time last June at a natural show-it was a "warm up" show for me. I was really stressed using something new. I was very relieved and surprised at how well it went on and stayed on and how nice it made me look! One other thing I thought of-there is some "FAQ" and tanning tips on the Jan Tana website that might help.
You'll do fine. You have dieted and worked hard and you deserve to be on that stage. There is a reason why you will be on stage and everyone else will be in the audience. You put in your dues. They did not. You deserve to be there. Chin up-you'll do well!!!

Thanks, I'm gaining confidence. Just dont want to do bad. Heck, i dont want to lose. I only did this once before in 1990 (2 shows) and won everything i got into except the overall in the second. Here's a pic last week. 6'1" 222 there, about 216 now, will probably weigh in about 212 I hope. Whatcha think for a 41 year old?

I've used jan tana many times I love it for guess posing but in My last comp in may, I came out far too pale compare to the ones using dream tan and judges said It made me lose the first place ! I quite agree saying it washed off easily espeially if you sweat . So be careful if it's really hot !

I have alway's gotten spray tanned, or used Pro tan. However, last weekend I used Dream tan for the first time and LOVED the color. IMO it was the best I ever looked:) Although kind of a be-atch to clean off, the stuff is awesome!
On a side question for anyone, Do you just use a back brush to clean it off your back if you live alone? (I know, stupid question)

I just went to my weigh in (213 lbs, about 3% bf or less) with one coat on. I was told to use 4, but maybe I put it on too thick. The promoter talked to me said my color looked great. I told him I only have one coat on, he said one more should be fine. I just put on the second, will do # 3 before bed and touchup in the am. What I dont like about it is its too sensitive. I got in a little rain and it splotched like crazy .. after 4 hours. I wonder when I oil up will it do the same? Or sweat? Can you use Dream tan alone, or is it just a bronzer to use with another product?

How far in advance of your show do you get the spray tan done? And then do you not shower at all between the spray tan and the show?
Thanks!

I came out okay in the show ... 2nd heavy masters and 2nd heavy open (to the guy who won overall). But I think I was too dark. My wife said so and a buddy. i do think it took away from the dryness of the abs and obliques. judge said I had a tad too much water, everything else was spot on, "total package" he said.
My next question, will Jan Tana show tan work in conjunction with a tanning salon spray tan? i know the darkest a salon can do will not be dark enough. they said it takes days for it to scrub off and about 5 hours to dry good. So, i wonder if I get the spray tan, let it dry while I'm driving to the weigh in about 4 hours away, then one coat of Show tan may be just right, IF it will work together.
