Currently, I use Windows XP (at home) seems a lot faster by far and a lot more compatible.
At work, my PC has Windows Vista though. I don't see any advantages as to why I should keep using Vista though. Are there even any?

Windows 7 is being released this year.
They allowed people to use the beta which is what I'm typing this on.
Awesome OS, dude.

You can still get win 7 now, its not the official release, but its the closest version to what there going to release in a couple of months.
Its about 2gig for the 32bit version or a little over 3gig for the 64bit version.

They had to remove movie maker for legal reasons, but the Show Desktop is on the other side (right of the clock).

Windows XP.
A year or so after Win 7's release, I would probably go with Windows 7. That should be enough time for an adequate amount of hardware support as well.

Personally id stick to xp until a few months into windows 7. But you could always get vista and get the free upgrade if it qualifies.

Vista is rubbish, especially on laptops. Resourse hungry as f*ck.
Running vista on my laptop (acer aspire 5738G) and Ive had numerous problems ranging from networking issues, to problems with firefox, u torrent, google chrome etc. I get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes here in October though (came with my laptop). I'm considering switching to XP till then, but I've resolved some of the issues I was having with vista, so I might wait.
My box was running vista, and once again, I didnt like it. It was a lot slower than when I had XP. About the only perc was DirectX10 graphics on games that supported it, but thats too high a price to pay IMO. My HDD recently died on my box. Going to put XP on it when I buy a new HDD, then switch to Win& when it comes out.

Windows 7 official and FINAL version WAS released about 3 weeks ago as OEM to the big PC's retailers, naturally a couple of minutes later it was leaked to the interwebs and it is now available to download at your favorite torrent/emule/rapidshare/etc. sites.
Having said that, I must say, windows 7 is by FAR the best version I've ever used of windows, it looks as good as vista (or even better) and it actually works (unlike vista).
Having been screwed by Microsoft since I actually paid for Vista license, I felt I had a full right downloading windows 7 from rapidshare.
No regrets.

Depends on your specs.
If you have a decent PC, id go Vista.
I'm yet to try Windows 7 though so i wont comment on that.

I believe there are and there ways to activate your copy. I wonder if hackers will use the bios emulation like they did with vista.

It's not a serial, those are not available (as far as I know), but this little program works great.

EDIT: OP, I would also go a head and recommend windows 7, if your machine can handle XP, it can probably handle at least the basic version of win7
get windows 7 RC before they stop giving keys out for it. the 7100 client is what was official released last friday.
almost all drivers work with W7. so you dont even need to worry about it.

its almost a decade old. get a better computer and run windows 7

windows 7 RTM (Ready To Market) aka 7600 was released a little while ago.
So I wouldn't get the RC, even though I heard it was also working fine.

The only issue I've had is my sound card Even though i have the W7drivers from Creative, they keep telling me I "don't have that hardware installed"

I have the same case, but I flip-flopped the DVD drive with the middle case fan. Basically, fan, DVD drive, fan. Just to warn ya, that case is a DUST MAGNET, so be sure to blow out every now and then... few weeks ago, I actually ended up taking tweezers to my CPU heatsink to pull off massive dust bunnies from behind the fan (Zalman CNPS9500)

Lol, yeah I feel ya. I have to wipe the outside of the case and I clean the inside probably once a month or so. I need to quit being lazy and get the cords situated right. I need one of those modular power supplys.
