I have a chance at going to work in Egypt for 3weeks but all can think about is how it will mess up my weightlifting goals. My wife thinks I'm crazy. Am I, I'm real comfortable with my routine here, and I can't imagine with work it will be a vacation/resort living. I agree it may be the only chance I get to go to Egypt.

X200000 In fact, the Pyramids are one of only a few places I even care about seeing that I haven't yet.

Go on vacation.
Work harder than ever prior to going. You should need the rest by then.
Enjoy life.

I'm sure there are gyms in Egypt.. The one in your hotel will probably be pretty frilly but I'm sure you can find a real gym somewhere..
Even if there's no gym, there's tons ways you can improvise. It's only 3 weeks. In lieu of weight, you can add instability... Like instead of bench press, you can do push ups w/your hands underneath basketballs or something.
You can do hanging rows by putting two chairs back to back then spacing them apart and then putting a broomstick on top.
And you can do high rep body weight squats..
Remember, all you need for a full body work out is a push, a pull and a leg movement.

Three weeks is nothing....and will have minimal impact on your weightlifting goals. Egypt FTW!

Work harder than ever prior to going.
I've heard this one once before. Train yourself into over-training, then think of the three weeks as recovery time.

yepp.. when you come back from a three week period of rest, you're body will definitely react to it as new stimulus.
GO! You won't regret it.. Trust me.

You guys live exciting lives.
Me, I'd stay the hell home and lift. I don't like travelling and I don't like missing workouts. Nothing in Egypt I can't see from the internet, anyway. ;)

OK let me think about this for a second, EGYPT! I'll bet there is an Olympic Lifting club somewhere there or some type of commercial gym.

OK it wasn't Samir Bannout he was Lebanese, but wasn't there an Egyptian guy that did real well in the 80's? He was a smaller guy...somebody has to know this...

That's something I can't control, I may be in a tent for 3 weeks working 16hr days taking care of folks with camel flu or I may end up in a hotel working 6-8 hour shifts with plenty of days off to sight see? Its a gamble but only 3 weeks, but I hate leaving my routine. It always seems harder for me to get back. I'll keep ya posted.

Unless lifting weights is illegal in Egypt LOL, then go. Of course there will be gyms there and if there is not, there are plenty of things you can do to keep an exercise program going while there.

Yeah a 3 week break might cost you some strength (but unlikely to effect your physical appearance - assuming you don't pig out on food or something). Getting back to where you were strength wise will take what, 3 weeks, 4 weeks at the most. Bottom line is in the long run that break won't effect you (negatively). And that's assuming worst case scenario that you don't have any access to gyms in Egypt. I think you' be crazy not to go (if visiting Egypt is something you'd otherwise like to do).

How can I say this? Oh, yeah:
GO TO EGYPT!!!
It ain't like a trip to Iowa or Arkansas that you can go to anytime. I may never see Egypt and I've seen about 1/3 of the effing world!
And if you really want to train, you'll find a way.
Now get packing!
