I want to start back in Muay Thai Kickboxing but i want to keep my muscular look. Will doing both be counter productive for one? if not should i lift first and then cardio or the other way around?

also i still have alot of whey protein, should i keep using that even with cardio?

there's a sports conditioning section. That would probably be the most helpful place to post this thread. You can be in muay thai and be muscular but not like body builder muscular. IMO it would be counter productive because you obviously wouldn't be as agile. Just make sure to keep your protein intake up and keep lifting.

I would say heavy lifting would interfere by less flexibility for high kicks n' such & you could be too fatigued to train in either practice.

Well heavyweights in mixed martial arts can do head kicks, so as long as you stretch while doing the weight training it shouldnt stop you. Also you need condition workouts which are tiring as hell

I would say go for pure strength. Full body. Compound heavy movements. small reps.

First you shouldnt even worry about working out, work on your technique in the thai; this is your primary goal.

If you find that you are able to find time and have enough energy to lift weights, then go for it.

However don't sacrifice anything to lift weights.
ex. leaving practice early or not giving it your all because you know you have to lift later.
don't wake up early and lose sleep to lift weights
skipping a meal because you don't think you'll be able to hold it while lifting

Focus on the thai, perfect your technique, give it your all, and see if you have energy for more.

*It's better to be normal and kick ass, then to be ripped and have your ass kicked.*

Eat and sleep as much as you can...

whichever one your more serious about should be the one you do first. it's not going to hurt you do do both (and yes, keep taking whey) however, you will never be great at muay thai if you are lifting heavy. muay thai is one of the most demanding cardio sports in the world. actual thai kickboxers rarely even pick up a weight. you'll see once you start to learn it, that being big and muscular will significantly reduce your ability to be a good striker. go on youtube and look up muay thai and take note of what all the good guys look like. they're all skinny as twigs. if your serious about wanting to learn muay thai, i would strongly suggest coming up with a very high rep weight lifting routine or dropping weights all together and do tons of calisthenics.

There is a guy on this forum you should PM. His name is kziwarrior. He does lots with MMA and is extremely knowledgeable about lifting along with MMA training.

He posts regularly in the following forum:

I have trained and instructed in Martial Arts my whole life, I am also an ammy Kickboxer.

If you space your workouts 4-6 hours and give your body plenty of rest and the proper nutrition you will be fine. YES you will lean out on possibly loose size due to the cardiovascular demands of MT - but nothing one would cry about.

Someone mention strenght training hurting your flexibility. I actually found once I started squatting and training my legs it gave my splits a further range of motion.

thanks for all the advise, i PMed that guy. As working on Muay Thai, i was going for 2 years before i stopped to try weight lifting.. so it is not new to me, i just want to add weight lifting into the routine.. should i do one day weights and then the next day cardio? i mean then i would be working out 5 days a week.. instead of 3.

Try adding plyometrics to your training program as well on a seperate day. Work with resistance bands on the tread mill. Wrap the band around you and jog on an incline while someone holds you back, also try side shuffling. Functional Strength/Cardio training I think would be very effective on your success.
