View Full Version : diuretics and dehydration
So, I'm confused. I just started taking dandelion root capsules at the advice of someone on the boards. I'm not a big fan of water weight (who is?), and I heard this was a natural diuretic.
But why is it okay to take this, but drinking other diuretics like a significant amount of caffeine or alcohol is a bad idea? Obviously, yes, drinking alcohol has other negative side effects like reduced fat oxidation, etc, but I know part of the reason for not drinking alcohol is the dehydration factor.

A good way to get rid of water weight is to get rid of the carbs in your meals! I'm on the CKD (Cyclical ketogenic diet) and I eat less than 30 g carbs a day / 6 days per week. I eat carbs one day, and I gain 6-7 pounds water weight. It's gone after two days without carbs. You see, glucose is stock in your muscles and liver as glycogene. Glycog?ne is basically glucose + water. There's a Keto forum in the nutrition section, you can find all you need in there!

Yeah, I've heard about the effect of carbs on water weight. (Admittedly, wow, 6-7 lbs...that is a lot.) I wasn't really looking to reduce carbs, though....and if that means the extra water weight, I might be willing to just put up with it.
I'm still curious about the whole diuretic issue, though. Are some diuretics okay and others not? And why?

I posted this in another thread a few days ago.
Dandelion root is great stuff and I know many who use it daily. It's main purpose is to help with fluid balance (people will use as a mild diuretic) but it does so much more. Aids in the reproduction of bile for a healthy liver. Lowers cholesterol and keeps uric acid levels in check. Helps keep potassium levels up and balances the electrolytes in the blood. Aids in digestion is also used for tumors, boils, blisters, acne, etc...
As long as your drinking water there's no problem with dehydration, they don't work that way.
I'm not a fan of keto type diets, so I'm not one for ever cutting out carbs. I feel they're crucial in a healthy program for getting the best results...jmo.
