Put a dampener on my snare. I feel like a ***

Just bought a new Evans g1 coated snare head, I tuned it and got a horrible overtone. I'm really bad at tuning my drums apparently. So for ****s and giggles I put my 14 tom dampener on it and it sounds awesome but I feel dumb..any suggestions on how to tune a snare without sucking so bad.

I hate Evans heads, I'm a remo guy all the way. I put a damper on my snare, I know people who do it. I thune my snare pretty high and tight, sounds good.
