Rippetoe places great emphasis on a lifting platform. Is this purely to maintain floor asthetics or does it serve some kind of safety or improved lifting purpose?

Protects the floor, protects the bar/bumpers to some extent, and deadens sound. If you clean/snatch or do the variants were you dump the bar a lot, it's nice to have one.

plus it reserves the space so you're wife can't put junk there. she knows if it does go there it will have a barbell dropped on it.

For me my rubber weights and old strip of carpet does that. So there's nothing in regards to the lifter's long term safety?

My mother hangs clothes on my squat rack :(

So long as when you say rubber you mean full rubber bumpers, you'll be fine. No, there's no safety aspect to it, if you're going to drop the bar on yourself, you'll do that platform or not lol.

I think they are just rubber coated. I'm very good with them though and I don't drop **** like a retard.

That is just so wrong. Start using lots of chalk and then she won't want to put clothes on your rack.

I don't think when you're talking about olympic lifts that its generally regarded as "retarded" to drop the weight. That's why the pros use platforms and bumbers.....and they dump weights all the time.
I think if you do them long enough you'll get to a weight you'll need to drop. Rubber coated iron plates won't last under this kind of abuse. Bumpers are made specifically to be dropped and not be destroyed.

Misunderstanding. Apart from power cleans I don't do any explosive lifts.

Ahh, ok.....then you're plates will probably be fine. I don't understand dropping weights with regular lifts either.

The other thing a lifting platform does is gives you a level spot with perfect footing so you can be sure you don't slip when lifting.
