Ok, so in about 3-4 years i'm going to inherit some money. I am hopefully going to get 2 mil in a trust fund, and I am going to ask for an additional mil. I won't get that additional mil unless I invest it in something. I'f i'm going to do anything, I would want to open up my own gym. It would be called something like "Mitchell's bodybuilding and powerlifting gym". Is it the most profitable to only attract bodybuilders and powerlifters? NO. Is it the right thing to do? YES!

Pretty much it would be a clean, but not fancy or snooty gym. It would have pretty much all free weights, i'm thinking 6 flat bench'es and 3 incline and decline benchs. 6 squat racks. 3-4 deadlift platforms. Dumbbells that go up to 150 pounds, and plate loaded machines. Oh and no smith machines.

Long story short, my mum is hoping to sell her company for 14-16 mill in 3 - 4 years and my brother and I are going to get some of that only if we invest it..

Even if it was free, i would never workout in anything you owned. The desire to split your skull with a barbell would be too great.

Best of luck with the gym!

I'm probably going to move back to missouri, and I might open it in Lees Summit.

I don't have a vote that fits, I guess Maybe would be my pick. I'll say, buring money for the sake of doing it is silly. I think you can have a gym that supports actual bodybuilders/powerlifters and still attracts a large clientel(sp). I think the big chains try to have a clean sterile environment(read: an enviropnment that is not for actual weightlifting types) for fear of scaring away the prissy clients. It's been my experience that those in the gym not to train "hardcore" will spend most of their time in the cardio section or in classes. I think the best bet is a clear seperation of free weights/HC section and a fantastic cardio section. best of both worlds and everyone feels comfortable.

Reason I ask is while it is nice to go with the "hardcore" focus (no Smith Machines as you said) you're probably limiting your customer base but being too narrow. People use Smith Machines for rehab, and other things for example.

I wouldn't want you to have 10 members and risk going into bankruptcy only to have to fly to Vegas and win a dodgeball tournament to save your gym.

well yeah, But i'm pretty sure there would be more than 10 members. And ya, i'd have smith machines, and cardio equipment, but the goal would be to attract the bodybuilding/powerlifting/strength athlete crowd.

not having a smith machine is a stupid idea.

Not having one doesnt make it hardcore, it just makes it not equipped with a useful machine that most people utilize in one way or another.

specialized gyms are tough to keep profitable.
if i had some loot to invest into a gym i would try to make it diverse as a motherfcuker.
pool, hot tubs, saunas, rock climbing, aerobics, circut training, basketball, and a serious hardcore section with it's own room.
martial arts, batting cages, gymnastics, daycare, there are tons of things a gym can offer to make it inviting.
one stop shopping for activities would attract whole families willing to spend their paycheck, not just one cheap powerlifter.

i worked at my friends gym for years part time whenever he needed me. he tried to specialize in powerlifting, BJJ and scuba. it got driven into the ground and now his building is vacant and he sold most of his equipment like a crackhead yardsale.

would the hypothetical gym have showers, sometimes i go just to tak sports with the fellas in the showers. just wondering, the answer would still be no, i don't like cats and would get killed in transportation costs.
