Just read this and was pretty impressed - if he's right mainstream pharma doing it all wrong
Cliffs:
1. cholesterol is used to repair lesions in arteries caused by inflammation, it is like a bandaid
2. more inflammation = elevated cholesterol : another example of correlation not causation
3. heart disease can be prevented by reducing inflammation causing foods

Interesting article. Honestly, I have no thoughts on the validity of his claims but they do sound reasonable.

A lot of people do not favor the lipid hypothesis of heart disease.

I like some of Mark Sisson's articles, but he's largely a quack. This whole "Primal" shtick is just repackaged Paleo Diet stuff with better marketing and writing style than Cordain has put forth. Sisson is quick to spout off anecdotal evidence and preach the ills of grains/legumes/dairy while, like Cordain, providing no evidence to support his claims.
I much prefer Art DeVany to Mark Sisson, but Devany throws out his fair share of quackery as well.

That article was an interesting read, I have to say. But seeing as I don't have any educational background on that stuff, I can't really tell how accurate and valid it actually is.
Oh yeah, and any other thoughts on the blog itself before I go and devour everything that's written there? :D

well said, and good points. Altho I subscribe to the Paleo thing, Mark definitely has little to nill research backing up what he claims. He basically just read www.thepaleodiet.com and repackaged it for the average joe. Still, I do like his writing style and sometimes he makes useful inferences from other people's work. Also, this article was nice and easy to understand so I can send it to friends who aren't into the whole scientific research thing.

Well, he is following the Paleo protocol, so grains, cereals, pastas, legumes, starches, etc are blamed for inflammation in the body. So the inflammation is fixed by cholesterol, thus the elevated cholesterol being a symptom rather than a cause

you gotta be joking, de 'my testosterone is so high all the dogs bark at me' vany ?? de 'global warming is false' vany ? he's the king of quacks
a least the other guy doesn't charge for his articles
Inflammation is the bodies mechanism of deffense, but what happens with western diets is that they cause too much inflammtion which lead to disease
anti inflamation diet ftw
I said that Devany throws out his share of quackery. Still, Devany is more science based in his writings and I prefer his work to Sisson's in that regard.
I think we all agree that chronic inflammation isn't a good thing and that the standard western diet isn't an optimal way to eat. However, there's nothing about the Paleo Diet that gives it protective properties over a high grain/plant based diet unless someone is sick (Celiac for example) and cannot digest gluten without spazzing out.
I see nothing wrong with Paleo eating, but it isn't a cure-all and I can't tolerate the ridiculous anecdotes and outlandish claims of the disciples of this dietary regimen (mainly the CrossFit nerds).

Scott what I don't get is how you can dislike the paleo diet yet read devany.
Well I suppose you will continue to not get it.
His 'evolutionary fitness' schtick is pretty much the paleo diet coupled with some workout routine
I never said I had a problem with the Paleo Diet in and of itself. I never said anything about Devany's workouts of Evolutionary Fitness. I said that Devany is more science based in his articles/arguments and that's why I prefer his writing over Sisson's.
and btw crossfit basing aside have you tried any of their workouts? no? go do it and tell me it's not hard
I never said anything about CrossFit not being hard. I've been doing CrossFit workouts for over 4 years. I'm well aware of some of the workout's difficulty.
and what they recommend is the zone diet not the paleo diet so check your sources
I never said they didn't recommend the Zone. I never said they recommended Paleo. I said "mainly the Crossfit nerds" make outlandish claims and hype up personal anecdotes. By "CrossFit nerds" I'm referring to boisterous chest pounders who make up only a small percentage of the CrossFit community. Oddly enough, the Paleo CrossFitters are nowhere to be found at the CrossFit Games or anywhere in the elite times of individual workouts.
Read more carefully and stop assuming.
