Yes, I'm a girl. Yes, I want to fight. Any questions? :p

So, this is my third log. I decided to move my log here not only because I have started training to fight, but I also felt like this would help renew my determination after 2 weeks of not going to the gym because of illness and injury. The female journal section just doesn't seem to be the best fit for me.....so hello to you guys in here. :)

Most recent log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=115260681

I do need to mention I am still in recovery from hyper extending my left elbow on May 15th. I am finally out of a splint/sling, but I still don't have full range of motion or strength yet. So, part of my training will include rehabilitating my elbow. I will probably end up lop sided becuase of atrophy on my left side. Grrrrr.

If I heal well, I will have my first fight in late August or September. :D I was scheduled to have my first fight on May 16th, but obviously my injury prevented that from happening. :(

So, I have about 10-12 weeks to shape up. I have built some strength (minus the L elbow issue), but need better endurance. I want to focus mostly on a recomp between now and my first fight. I have been on a bulk pretty much since I started on October 2008, and I need to lean out a little, but don't want to do a full cut.

I have also been looking for T-boosters that work well for women, but this area is scarce on research. So, while I am looking for supps to add, I currently am not on any supplements except micronized creatine monohydrate and vitamins.

Well, that's about it for my introduction. The official log begins tomorrow with stats, exercises, and food.

Toodles guys! ;)

Bah, sorry to hear about your elbow. I hyperextended mine... plus overuse = damage to the medial nerve. :(

Which disciplines do you train?

Bah, sorry to hear about your elbow. I hyperextended mine... plus overuse = damage to the medial nerve. :(

Which disciplines do you train?

The discipline is mixed right now. I recently joined an amateur female fighting group that focuses on a mix of boxing, judo, grappling, and submission wrestling while prohibiting moves such as arm bars, choke holds, and face strikes. So, I have to get the other girl to tap out with out using the more potentially harmful moves --- since this is an amateur group. However, there are still many moves I can do to make them very uncomfortable, and I am stronger that the rest of them so I have an advantage there too. :)

The day before the last match, I was fighting a 6' 180lb girl and was really kicking butt. I actually picked her up and threw her down on the mat. However, I don't think she had the aggression level I did - she could have put up more of a fight.

I would like to train with a specific art (probably BJJ if I had to pick), but the schools up here are very expensive and this group is training me for free. I'm taking what I can get right now. :o

Oh, and I didn't realize my gym was closing early today. Arg. So I get back in the gym tomorrow. I did make a nice selection of foods for work tonight....so at least I am eating well. My appetite has suffered since I haven't been exercising though, so I may not finish my box of food tonight.

I am hoping my arm isn't badly damaged. It is getting better every day, but my range of motion for that elbow is still less than 90 degrees. I go back to the Dr. in about 2 weeks for another evaluation.

Today was my first day back in the gym in over two weeks. Getting sick and then hyper extending my elbow hasn't made my break that fun. I did have a great work out today. Since this was the longest break I have taken since I started back in Oct08, I wasn't sure how much strength or endurance I had lost.

I can only use my left arm for day to day tasks, and I still have limited range with that elbow. The main thing that concerns me is when I try to flex my left bicep- nothing. It's like the signal isn't getting to the muscle. No pain, unless I try to curl with weight (1lb hurts), but the bicep doesn't move. Hum.....

Anyways, my gym efforts are currently focused mostly on legs and endurance. I will be working my right side becuase I would rather be lop sided than lose on both sides.

For food: I use nurtidiary to log, but haven't seen a function allowing a public view of my eating like fitday. So for the time being, I am just going to post my intake and macros. Keep in mind that for any given day, this will be somewhere in between 95-100% accurate depending on extra bites or missing food. I change it in the end for me, but since my work days have strange hours, it's not convenient to wait until I have eaten everything today before I post. So, this is just my food plan:

Calories:2060
Protein: 219g, 42%
Carbs: 161g, 31%
Fat:62g , 27%

Are ALL chokes prohibited? No chokes and no armbars = a good part of a BJJ arsenal gone. :) Who's doing the teaching in the group?

Yes, chokes and armbars are prohibited. The only exception for a choke is a pillow choke, where the person is choked by their own arm reaching across their throat. This group is not a traditional group. It is a female only group that focuses mostly on submissions grappling and provides an opportunity for girls to fight with little fighting experience. I would eventually like to learn a specific art, but this is really my only option right now. I have to start somewhere. The guy doing most of the training did Judo for 12 years, and a wrestling coach is supposed to join up soon to teach the girls too.

Just ordered some ZMA and Bone-up! :) I will be adding those to my supplement routine; so, that makes ZMA, Bone-up, micronized creatine monohydrate, whey protein, and vitamins A & D. I also make a point to get good fats from my diet. I love avocados, nuts, DHA flax oil, and salmon. Oh, and I love whole eggs. I will eat 3-4 in a sitting many days out of the week. Yum.

I also got a pic from the first fight meet I attended on May 16th. I would have been fighting that day, but because of my elbow injury I just got to talk about fighting. Grrr. I am going to take some current progress pics in the next day or two so I can have a starting point. It's been a month since I took pics.

Today was my first day back working anything upper body. Most exercises are right side only, but did use the L lateral machine to work both shoulders. My strength was a bit confusing. On some exercises I was just as strong or arguably stronger than ~2 weeks ago, but my bicep curl has gone to shiz. When I stopped, I could squeak out 6 reps at 30 lbs with a DB, but I had to go down to a 20lbs today. My hammer row, on the other hand, was great. I was doing 6 reps at 70lbs a side, and today I went for 4 sets at 8 reps of 70lbs. Confused. My endurance is about the same, so no surprises there. Yesterday my legs seemed stronger too.

I need to learn what I am going to have to do to catch up my left side when I can lift with it again. I have never had to recover from any injury before. So if anyone has had experience with a hyper-extended elbow, I would like you hear about your recovery. :)

My Training for today:

N Write more about your actual MMA training (if you are training yet I saw your elbow was jacked)

I always like seeing girls that train consistently and hard enough to fight and compete, very admirable imo, I've been training for my first fight which is in 2 or so weeks and the diet and the no drinking or drugs and pushing it 5-6 days a week.... it's tough work and not for the weak, good luck look forward to seeing you compete.

Yeah, I have seen you around and noticed a few others. :) I'm trying to catchup on some female logs, and I saw you started one recently too. I have been interested in fighting for a while, but just recently got this opportunity with the amateur group.

Thanks for the tip about boxing gyms, I haven't thought of looking there. The really good MMA training gym in the area is $120/mo for one person. I am paying half that for me and my husband for our regular gym membership right now. It would be nice to find a more fight oriented gym.....I'll keep looking. :)

What kind of fight are you talking about?

This is an amateur group that uses a mix of boxing, judo, grappling, submission wrestling. Overall, it is mostly submissions grappling, but they allow moves that are not normally allowed with that fight form. It gives me an outlet to fight.

Right now, I am not able to train with the group. My left arm is useless except for simple day to day activities. I do intend on ramping up the intensity of my workouts and doing more circuit training, but this week I am mainly focusing on just getting back in the gym and observing how I feel, my strength level, and endurance.

Also, I have to travel for practice because the group is about 3-4 hours away. So once my arm gets well enough to practice, I will have group training probably twice a month. However, I do have a friend close to me that was a serious wrestler for 6 years, then joined the army and got some good hand to hand combat training. He will be training me when I am not at group practice. I realize my log may be a bit boring until I'm able to fight train again, but I wanted to start so I could track my recovery and get a motivational boost too.

I wish I had video of me fighting with that 6' 180lb girl. That was good stuff. :p

It is Tibetan writing. The meaning is complicated, best to do a search on google or wikipedia. ;)

Training has had to change, much to my chagrin, but I plan on upping the intensity. Once my arm is better, my training will really change. Glad you think my current routine is ok though. I started this log to get advice, etc., so I appreciate the input.

but you're just doing some rough sparring or do they host an event/show?

They have shows roughly every 10 weeks, but all the girls spar during practice. I will get to spar when I go to practice again, and the guy up here I know is going to lightly spar with me to teach me - but he is a lot bigger than me so the sessions will be for training, not serious sparing.

why would u want to do that to a person? whats the point behind that? i thought all this martial art stuff wasnt about hurting and making people feel uncomfortable...

The goal of the sparring matches is to get the other girl to tap out, this fighting style isn't a pure martial arts technique. Also, I thought some martial arts used techniques such as arm bars and chokes...and those are pretty uncomfortable. I'm still learning about techniques, though...so I am not sure the differences of each. MMA fighting isn't exactly a pain free experience as I have witness either. What type of martial arts are you referring to?

Oh awesome, I really like the Tibetan writing style!

and yeah just make sure you are 100% healed before you up the intensity.
I'm bad for not doing that, and usually take forever to heal injuries..I just have trouble "taking it easy" so to speak, cuz then I get all lazy and just wanna go out and drink/party haha
but like I said with your arm injury in mind I think that looks like a good routine.

Any "sport/combat" martial art will involve making people uncomfortable and/or hurting them (to a limited degree). It's not like bones are being broken, but if you get punched...

I am still pretty new at this sport, so I can't satisfy your curiosity with an answer gathered from repetitive sparring. However, the times I have sparred, I have been the aggressor and threw punches while making my opponent back up.

As a reminder, I am fighting girls, not guys. I am not one of these girls that think I can (nor do I want to) go toe to toe with a dude. Just because I want to fight doesn't mean I am not aware of my limitations. Any good fighter must be aware of their limitations. :)

I would like to see more definition in my legs, and abs would be nice too. Ideally, I can achieve a more defined look without dropping much weight. Normally my left arm is 1/4" behind my right, but it is now 1/2". So I will be tracking that difference as part of my recovery.

Anyways, this is my starting point. Toodles. :)

Alrighty guys. Today is going to be a food log day. Why? Well, I work a strange work schedule and as a result sometimes have sleep issues. I work 4 days on, 4 days off, and my cycle rotates from a 12hr day shift to a 12hr night shift. So, I am constantly moving around my sleep cycle. My husband and I tend to adhere mostly to a night shift schedule, so the day shift is the worst for me. Today is day one. Work started at 7am. I maybe have 1-2hrs of sleep despite trying to go to bed at 11pm. Normally on day-shift I go to the gym at 5am. I will be at the gym at 5am tomorrow, but today just wasn't going to happen.

So now that you all have more of a background.....here is my food plan for the day. I tend to eat the same types of food: oats, chicken, fish, eggs, whole wheat bread, sweet potatoes, etc. I strive to eat more whole foods and try avoid highly refined foods. Some days I am more nonchalant about food than others, but overall my diet is fairly consistent throughout. I got a little slack during my off time a few weeks ago (when you're sick only a few things sound appealing), but now I am getting back into my usual diet routine.

Food Plan: with calories and grams of p/c/f

M1: Oatmeal with Protein powder, blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries.
355cal (31p/48c/6f)

M2: Tilapia with Broccoli & Cauliflower
235cal (40p/14c/4f)

M3: Whole Wheat Fiber Bread w/ Turkey, Ham, and 75% reduced fat cheese
295cal (35p/30c/7f)

M4: 2 Scoops Whey & Casein Protein Powder
240cal (44p/6c/4f)

M5: 4 Eggs, 0% Greek Yogurt, 75% reduced fat cheese
400cal (42p/5c/22f)

M6: Chicken Breast, Whole Wheat Pasta, Garlic Pasta Sauce
390cal (32p/54c/6f)

**M7: 1/2-1 C 1% cottage cheese** Maybe.....I will probably go to bed not long after M6

Totals for M1-M6:
1914cals
224g protein (46%)
157g carbs (32%)
49g fat (22%)

5am workout!

I finally got some sleep last night and made the gym this morning. I had to cut cardio a bit short becuase I was getting so hungry I lost my stamina, but my weights went well. I am a bit frustrated becuase I noticed today how my chest muscles seem barely there now. I am very fond of my pecs and was really working on getting a line. I am hoping they just look deflated and will come back quickly once I can work my chest again. My other favorite muscle groups are my lats, quads, and hams. I realize if I play sports, I will eventually get hurt in some form or fashion. I'm just hoping it's a while before I get hurt again.

Missed my workout this morning. I have a strange pain in my left middle back that hurts when I breathe deep. Hoping it will go away by the end of the day. If it were my right side I would be more concerned since many interesting organs are over there. It doesn't seem like a pulled muscle or anything.....dunno...gas? Maybe I suppose....but hasn't gone away since this morning. It hasn't gotten worse though....

Hoping to be good for tomorrow. I'm tired of screwy things happening with my body that disrupt my workout plan. WTF? Grrr.

EDIT: It now appears I must have pulled a muscle in my back the previous night. After work my husband rubbed my back and it helped. The pain is still there this morning, but it is not distracting. I'll probably be normal tomorrow.

So, the past few weeks I have been struggling to keep the same motivational level (for eating right and working out) I had before my injury. This week has been especially difficult because of insomnia problems and a busy work week.

I posted in the motivational section yesterday, looking for other's stories of injury, recovery, and motivation. After that post, I analyzed my situation so I could understand where my motivation problems were stemming.

I wanted to link to that thread, because the post I posted this morning is a good summary of why trying to keep on doing what I was doing before hasn't been working for me.

I analyzed what had changed besides not being able to use my left arm, and how I was approaching that mentally. You have to get to the root of an issue to truly solve it, and I think I am headed in the right direction now.

Here is the thread: If anyone as anything to add, I would be very interested to read your experience, comments, or advice. Thanks you all.

Had a good day today! I have been getting excited about getting back out on the bike trails, and I am learning that as situations change so do short term goals and plans. I have decided to start riding my bike to the gym (4 mi round trip), and riding it to work a couple of days a week (16mi round trip). I also met someone with a brown belt in BJJ who is willing to teach me, but I don't know when that will get started.

The weather was so beautiful, my husband and I went riding on the W&OD for a leisurely trip (14mi), and hopefully we will be able to ride tomorrow as well.

Food is on track today. I have decided to eat slightly more carbs and a little less protein. I think more than 200g protein is probably more than I really need, so I am shooting for ~175 with the extra carbs being mostly whole grains, sweet potatoes, and veggies.

For what it's worth, squats are a much more effective way to build leg strength than the leg press.
