My version of shocking my diet is not eating clean for one or two meals a week. For example last week I had a chili cheese burger and chinese food. The week before I had pizza.
Stuff like that.

Because of food intolerances and an allergy my list of safe foods is short. So I get little variation. Which is ok. Ideally you'd like to vary your food far more as there's so much good stuff out there and each offer different nutrients in different combinations. Shocking the diet I think is more about having a meal or a day where you up the cals. For most of us here that means upping carbs and fats. You don't have to do it by eating junk. There's plenty of good ways to do it using good foods. It can be helpful both psychologically and physically to eat more after dieting for awhile. How often you do it depends on listening to your body and knowing when it's needed. A one a week cheat day is probably going to screw up your leaning out goals. A once a week cheat meal, if not overdone, can be helpful. I think it's also a good idea to go back to maintenance cals every 12 weeks or so for one week. Leaning out can be stressful on the mind and body. Giving both a break is usually a good thing.
