View Full Version : Finally, teh Layoffs

After nixing bonuses and raises for the year, they're finally having layoffs. Not sure how many, but today a bunch of us are getting our walking papers. Whomever is left is getting a 2.5% pay cut. I am hoping that having been included in the leadership meeting talking about how we're going to do this deed means that it's reasonably certain I'm not one of the ones getting the axe today. But regardless, this day is going to suck!

It's not fun. My company has already shed 10% of its global workforce (8,500 people) and has been implementing minimum 1 week per quarter MULA/VULA for everyone. All merit increases are frozen.
I must admit that management have handled it very well and they appear to be doing everything in their power to retain headcount...and their communications have been open, honest, frank and timely.
Having an axe hovering over your head is not fun however, and getting axed, even less so. I think I know how you're feeling.

Sounds like your company has done pretty well to stay off the layoffs all this time. Plus, it looks like they are taking measures to minimize. I've heard about some companies who have already had 2-3 rounds of lay offs.
Good luck today, hopefully you won't get the axe.

Shoot, I'm chronically employed. Within the last 6 months I have gotten a 13% raise, I get to goof off surfing BB boards and get paid for it. I get straight time for overtime, but I have unlimited OT.
If anyone on Long Island, NY needs a manufacturing job in an Engineering capacity, PM me.

That sucks . . . but companies have to do what they can to stay afloat, I suppose. Tough choices need to be made. Hope it turns out ok for you today.
We already had a 6% RIF earlier in the year, and we are on our 2nd straight quarter of having to take mandatory PTO to try and save $$ (and jobs). We have also nixed bonuses, raises and reduced the amount of PTO that can be accrued by a full week.

We all got paycuts and the layoffs are still coming :(
The email to me was more like Just be lucky we only cut your pay! But more professional and political of course :D

Good question, Do_Somethin, good question.
No layoffs at my work, we didn't get a raise for 2009, but we did get bonuses for our 2008 performances. Although they were much smaller than expected. But that's ok, at least I'm still employed.

Well they were supposed to be done with the last of the layoffs 2 1/2 hours ago so I think I can safely say that I made it. As a one-man department and since I serve several legally-mandated roles that nobody else is remotely qualified to fill, there wasn't a big chance I was going to be let go anyway, but you never know. I'll get the list later to update my databases and see what kind of percentage they laid off, but I do know it included a number of long term employees, several whom I know of who had been here for over 30 years.
Yes we have been lucky to avoid layoffs until now, but still it's hard to swallow, seeing so many good people suffering for a crisis that they didn't create. I'm just counting my blessings. I've been paying my bills without any trouble and the pay cut should not hurt me at all. Not sure why, but for some reason the Lord just has me in a good place financially, at least for the time being.

I'm not certain what's going to happen to us after the current project is finished. I believe they are working hard to find us all work.
keeping my fingers crossed

There used to be guy here who was on the forum all day complaining how bored he was, how he was going out to the warehouse to do pull ups etc.. Then one day he posted about getting laid off, how his wife was upset, how he didn't know how he could feed his family. This was before the recession. He doesn't come around anymore.
just sayin'

No complaints here, I do surf the boards on my breaks and at lunch when I actually take it. The place is quite hectic all day long. I am far from bored and they're finally hiring us some help.

A few weeks ago I accepted an advancement with a shift change....
Now apparently I've pissed of a bigwig and the advancement is 'on hold'...
Since the shift change comes w/ the advancement and my previous shift has been filled it is likely that, should the advancement be negated, I will be looking for something to do...
Sometimes ya just gotta swallow the big, awful-tasting pills! :D

My company started layoffs in Nov. lost 270 people nationwide 10 from my district, then Jan. they cut our support staff about 250 layoffs.
Now there is a surge in business and they are having to HIRE and the people laid off can't get there jobs back because they got severance packages so they are hiring new people who are as useless as cock flavored lollipops, because it will take 30-45 days to train them.
Want the punch line? The business surge could easily be over within the next 30-45 days and before they even get these new people trained properly we may end up over staffed again, WTF!?!?!?
