My ship had a little powerlifting meet vs another ship yesterday and I got to test my max on deadlift for the first time.

I never tried the deadlift till March of 2008 and was only able to do it for a month before I got such a crappy schedule that I stopped working out all together for 9 months. Well I started back up in December and here is where I'm at now.

89LJDCay1tw

Failed at 530. Anyone think I should have pulled this one out? I just felt like I was loosing my form too much, but after watching the video I think I should have stuck with it.

YxrXNwUy99Q

Here are the videos of my other lifts. Not bests for me, but it was all I could muster on this day. Few more months and hopefully I can PR all of these lifts.

340lb bench

AUYu7W_monw

460lb Squat (My wife said 455 in the video but it was 460 =].

fdf6T-7RkbE

Failed 500 squat. I was really disappointed with this lift. I have squatted more than this before. When I went down my knee wrap popped and it threw a massive amount of pain into my leg which killed my lift. I need higher quality knee wraps =].

Comments and critiques of my form or anything are welcome. I have much to learn.

Sweet thanks. Now I know. From what I hear that's half the battle. If you edit out your post then I'll fix my first one.

Good lifts, dave.

By ship you mean, boat? A meet on the ship?

Strong stuff. Be careful about jerking your deads off the floor with bent arms though.

By ship, I mean ship... I'm on an aircraft carrier. We didn't actually have the meet on the ship though, no. It was a friendly competition between a few carriers and LHD's that are in the shipyards. We had the meet at Brute Strength Gym here in Norfolk.

And I'm still confused on who this Dave guy is? =]

Good lifts, dave.

dave is a running joke on these forums, i honestly have no idea how it orginated

but if someone tells you good job dave man (abbreviated gjdm), they are being sarcastic because you ****ed up (mostly in the misc) or you actually did good

in this case its the later, thats a good raw total

Thanks. I was excited the ships had this as well.

I'd like to improve my raw and natural total to just over 1500 by the end of the year.

I will look into those APT knee wraps.

As for the gym, its definitely the best gym I have ever seen anywhere, ever... Check out their web site. I hope they expand since I'm moving back to California late this summer and their only location right now is here in Norfolk VA. Plus it only cost me 25 dollars a month to go since I'm military =].

damn strong lifts! that bench and squat both looked really easy for you, shame about the knee wrap on 500.

Yeah the bench and squat were both easy. that was my first time doing a competition style paused bench though so I think it was just my lack of training with it. As you can see in my signature my highest raw bench is much higher than that. As for the squat it was the only attempt of the three that I had someone else wrap my knee. Hes an experienced powerlifter and I figured I might learn something watching him do it. I don't know that I did.

OP, I've got their Convict Pro Knee Wraps. They're really stout. Recommended!

Someone at the gym recommended the Convict knee wraps as well.

Also do you think it would benefit my lift weight wise to use a belt? I didn't have one on since I don't train with one. If so any recommendations

This is the only critique I have as well.

Good job. Hope to be around the same strength when I get to the 190s in my bw

I only did this for that max. I see what you're talking about though. I think I was just nervous I wouldn't get it and I guess did something stupid in the process.

I'm really tempted to lean all the way out to the 181 class, but that would just be so much more watching what I eat, and I love to eat like a fatty as it is =P.

I use a belt on all of my heavy lifts. I think it would benefit you greatly. It is also good for protection.

I know that there are differing viewpoints on this.

So you're blaming the failed squat on your knee wraps? Perhaps you should learn how to squat without knee wraps. I always thought raw was just a belt.

As far as the deadlift, you have great speed off the ground, and yes you should have stuck with that 530.

OP, where are you heading to in CA? I know some solid gyms in SoCal.

I don't think so. You almost hitched 500. Next time maybe. Strong total.

This. Your first squat looked like your knees were starting to come in towards each other a bit, focus on keeping them out the whole time.

I might be crazy but I prefer the thugs to the black mamba, mambas have some nice bounce but don't feel thick enough to me :)

I agree that xzerohourx is a retard based solely off that post. Also try not quoting my whole post next time since there is no need to have all the videos show again. I may have missed the lift knee wraps or not but I can tell you the pain it caused sure didn't help keep me focused on getting the weight up.

I'll be going to the San Diego area. Depending on the price of rent I find will determine which city exactly, along with which school I end up going to.

after watching the 500dl it didnt look like you have 530 in you (no offense)
be careful about jerking the bar off the ground like that.

looks like you left some weight on the bench tho.

shame about the squat look into some APT knee wraps

wouldnt hurt to look into a belt

Lifts looked pretty damn good to me. The 500 was a nice save at the top, you got your hips under it and finished the pull. Like said though, careful with the bent arms. Also, with the 530, you did good to bail. Your shoulders were definitly starting to round out and pull forward. For just getting into deadlifting, you have great form! Try tightening everything up before exploding off the bottom. You have the right idea with the huge explosion off the floor...just take up the "slack" first and save your joints.

And that gym is definitly bad-ass! I saw the big tire deadlift bar against the wall...sweet!

Thanks for the input guys. I've been keeping a close watch on the slack issue from the floor in my last 2 training days with deadlift, and my lift strength wasn't affected by it. So I'll definitely keep that in mind when pulling heavier weight.

I just finished week 1 of the Base Mesocycle for the Smolov squat program so hopefully in a couple months I have some greatly improved numbers to post. I can already tell this program is going to kick my butt.
