View Full Version : The use of creatine monohydrate pre-contest

I understand that a good thing to do 3 days pre-contest with the carb load is a creatine monohydrate load. My question is, does it affect the muscles ability to take in the creatine monohydrate if the person has been taking creatine ethyl esther? I've read that to be able to have maximum uptake of the monohydrate, one should not have taken in monohydrate for at least 3 months. Is it the same with ethyl esther? Anybody know on this?

I wouldnt introduce anything new 3 days out from a contest. I dont see any reason to not take it prior to a show, I would be taking it a lot earlier than 3 days out if my system wasnt used to creatine though.

So do you think that if I'm taking creatine ethyl esther up to the show that my muscles won't take up the monohydrate as well though?

I stop the use of creatine about 5 days out. I think creatine would retain water,..and the last thing you want is that prior to contest.

Creatine does make you retain water - inside the muscle - which is precisely where you want it. I personally take creatine all the way up through the contest (as do many other natty pros).
If you are an individual that gets a mild adverse reaction to creatine (which you would undoubtedly know long before peak week), then that would be a case where I could see not using it at all.

This is going to be my first competition. Back in November I did a 2 week contest prep just to kind of see how my body would respond...kind of like a test run. I did my water, sodium, carb deplete...everything...wanting to see about where I'd come in at on stage. After my carb deplete and depeletion workouts I had a 3 day carb load where I added monohydrate to each meal and that's the exact response I got was my muscles just filling full of the water from the monohydrate...which was great. I'm about 7 weeks out and have been taking ethyl esther and I heard the other day that you don't want to be taking any creatine within 2 months of the show so that when you do load those 3 days prior to the show with the monohydrate you get the maximum uptake of water into the muscle cells. If I continue the ethyl esther up to the 3 days prior to the show, is that going to affect the muscles ability to take in all the water from the monohydrate? Does my question make sense? Thanks for your support.

Hey no prob man. Honestly, if you were taking creatine all the way up until 5 days out and didn't notice any kind of adverse reaction from taking it up to that point, I would go ahead and take it all the way through - IMO, I'd rather change as FEW variables as possible during peak week!

Just continue using it like you normally would. The timing of the dose is not important, creatine is not a supplement that will create a night and day difference X hours after using it, especially if you have already been using it (and even if you haven't). The idea on contest day is just to keep things consistent, no drastic last minute change ups.

I took Cre-mono all the way through up to and including comp day. Never changed the dose.
The only time I did stop taking it was the month after the comp. I figured it would be good to cycle off all supps and stims for 4 weeks. I'm just starting back on again and had some some water weight added along with strength. Pretty much what I was expecting.

should i substitute the gatorade and have vasocharge instead?

Hey, No love for the "it smoothed me out" excuse?
I tried to use every excuse there is for being smooth....I once even blamed my wife for shrinking my shirts.. When denial faded away and the truth finally crashed down on me like a palet of bricks, I was just still too fat for my liking!
