Thanks for stopping by. Forgive the presumptuous thread title, I find it inspiring. And it is my log so...
About me (aka, the boring preamble)
Professional computer geek, overweight all my life. Ever since I could remember, I wanted to do martial arts. My mom put me in a class when I was in kindergarten or first grade. But for whatever reason, she pulled me out because she didn't like the instructor. That was the extent. So, when I lost all my weight, I decided I needed some sort of motivation to keep it off. Enter martial arts. I. Was. Addicted. My original intent for martial arts was to keep me active so I didn't put on weight. Now, my whole health curriculum is used to accentuate my martial arts.
Why I chose BJJ
Many reasons. I don't like the traditional "YES SENSAI!" sort of martial arts. I like that BJJ is very competitive. I like that it leads into MMA. Ironically, I wasn't a big fan of MMA until I started getting into BJJ. Not the other way around.
Where I'm Going
I plan to continue training BJJ until earning my blue belt. And then start in on MMA. I doubt I'll ever compete in MMA, I am a little to old and a little too late in the game.
Where I've been
I first started training on April 8th, 2008 at Impact Jiu-Jitsu.
First stripe received: July 17th, 2008.
Second stripe received: Nov 17th, 2008.
Third stripe received: Jan 8th, 2009.
One competition, 2 wins, 2 losses.

Where I stand on the Holy Wars
...gi vs no-gi: Both can teach you something; gi for the fluidity and emphasis on technique. no-gi for more "real situations", applying pressure, and explosion training
...best martial art: I think everyone can take something away from some martial art. Even if it's only increased athleticism and/or flexibility. For single, unarmed opponents, I obviously think BJJ is the best. Against multiple or armed opponents.. well, at that point it's run away or "my gun is bigger then your gun" game.
What I'm hoping to get out of this log
A good place for me to eject verbal diarrhea. Also, help me review my training so I can later go back and review. Of course, advice is always appreciated.

I was feeling pretty lethargic -- I think I'm consuming too heavy a meal prior to training. Going to cut back and use more easily digestible foods -- honey and whey protein shake. I'll have to make up the calories later in the evening.
BJJ1
Standing guard break, emphasis on controlling the arm with a wrist-grinder.
BJJ2
Standing guard break, emphasis on three passes. One, if the tension is on the leg, release the grip and hip-thrust. Two, if the person overhooks or underhooks ankle, either go into or step back depending on the grip. Then hip-thrust. Three, do the standard leg-trap and backstep pass.
Conditioning
No one showed up, undedicated bastards! So I and the trainer just worked on my power-clean form. I'm new to power-cleans, so it was rather fun. I can see how it helps improve over-all athleticism though. I can't wait to do more.

Decent, I did the honey/whey protein shake. I felt pretty energized, so no complaints. I felt I had some pretty good rolls.

Worked on cross-sides top control from shoulders, did arm drag to hip. Key points:
...keeping pressure on the wrist and putting into the pocket of the hip
...locking fig4 before posting and taking your hips away from shoulders
...framing on their wrist
...grip breaking: if grabbing gi-pants, go downward, out
...grip breaking two: bicep cutter!

Well yeah he's been in wrestling since highschool and he's a highschool wrestling in structor but still, if you trained for 4-5 years, your not too old to compete in amature mma events. You should have your purple belt by then, possibly brown, depending on your dedication and ofcourse your instructors. Anyways good luck to you.

Great, woke up at 5am and snarfed about 1600 calories of food.
conditioning
started off with agility via ladder work
went to jumps
then did pyramid, 4 pullups, 4 hip-handstands, 4 jump squats, 4 sprints, 1 minute planks. Then did 8/8/8/8, 12/12/12/12, 8/8/8/8, 4/4/4/4. Excluding lanks, which was interlaced between sides and hill-climbers. I failed out on the 12 pullups :(
conditioning was aerodynes, split jumps, dball slams, sprints. each station was repeated 3 times with 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off.
I felt great after the work out, I really pushed myself and felt it.
free roll
Did pretty well, mostly grappled with people better then me. Rolled straight for about 45 minutes
No-Gi
Did guard passess from combat base. Mostly over-under, which is my go-to pass. Pleased that I could work it in a no-gi enviroment. Learned a really nifty trick for when the person is framing against you; throw your shoulder over and plop down on to the frame with your back. Except gracefull like.
My shoulder starting bothering me, so I decided to quit there. Burned about 1600 calories that session. (Thanks bodybugg!)

conditioning
Started off with wall series, went to agility.
Conditioning was circuit. 30 seconds on, 10 seconds off, 1 minute rest between cycles. 3 cycles.
Aerodynes, wall slames (did 8lb ball), mountain climbers, d-ball slams, laterals, sprawls, kettle-ball swings, and a finish of agility. I was certainly out of breath, I felt like I was about ready to puke. That's how I know I'm giving it my all, though.

triple threat attacks, nothing really new here. I did learn an interesting variation on transitioning to the back, though. Seems to work well for me.
no-gi
What a great class this was! I've always had trouble with my scissor sweep. The original way I learned was to take your knee and place it up against collar bone and grab the gi. My problem was that I could never (easily) disrupt their base enough to make it worth while. In no gi, my coach puts their leg a lot lower -- across their hips. This worked a _lot_ better for me, I was really able to load them up. In addition, it's a lot easier to transition to the.. the.. I don't know what it's called sweep. Load 'em up on your leg, shrimp out, extend the loaded leg and sweep. We also went over getting high guard while being on the side from this position. I like the attacks here, learned three; fig-four, armbar, and reverse armbar.
Oh, while we were rolling I got round house kicked to the eye by some other people rolling at the same time. Knocked my contact lense back under my eyeball -- that sucked.

We covered the scissor sweep last week. I think we did it where you place your knee across the hips as well and it worked great. The other sweep sounds kind of like the elevator sweep, we covered that last week as well. I missed the classes covering them before so my game was lacking without knowing how to do them right, and I didn't even know what I was missing which was the worse thing about it.

I think a lot of my trouble with the other scissor sweep is that my legs are short -- if I'm using my knee and pushing it up against their collar or around abouts it's hard for me to get enough space to pull them off base. With my leg across their hip, I feel like I can play with their base more. In general, it just feels more comfortable for me too. I'm going to focus on drilling that a lot when free-rolling, see if I have more success.

conditioning
Started off with the wall series. Went to jumps, did pretty good. Did Bulgarian mother ****ers, followed by planks, single leg dead lifts, side planks and multidirectional squats. Conditioning, 4 rounds at each station 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off, 1 minute rest between stations. Stations were: aerodynes, wall-slams (did really good here), wind sprints, jump thrusts. I talked with my coach afterwards because I felt I could do more. I need to focus more on going all out on all sets, I tend to lag on the second and third round.

Did more underpass work, spent a lot of time rolling. I pass way way stronger on my right then on my left, my partner was saying I was really really heavy.
conditioning
Started with the old man shuffle, then did even more vicious butt work. Progressed to ladder agility, and then conditioning. 30 seconds on, 10 seconds off, 3 iterations, one minute rest between iterations. The stations were: shake the baby (w/water), ladder, burps, push ups, KB swings, DB squats, wax on/off in pushup position on the slide, aerodynes. I modified burps and push ups to jump squats and planks due to my shoulder.
I honestly didn't feel this work out stretched my cardio much. I'm not sure if it was due to me not pushing myself enough or if it just wasn't cardio intense.

Back attacks and holding back position. Typical chokes from the back and the arm bar. I need to work more on the arm bar and get it in there, it's a good attack and I'm weak in it. I did okay rolling. There's this one wiry strength asian guy whom I always have trouble against (he consistently taps me out) -- I was doing great from the back because I'd body triangle him. Then the instructor told me I couldn't do that anymore as we were just focusing on keeping hooks. After that, I started losing position.. sigh.
no gi
Worked on maintaining cross-sides top. Did a keylock and also did cross-sides to triangle submission. I'm pretty decent at maintaing cross-sides -- I hear lots of "oooofs" when I settle in. The x-side to triangle admittedly needs some work for me; but I find that I don't favor it too much.

body stats
So, I went in for a body fat measurement yesterday. I was at 11.8%, now I'm at 12.4%. Previously, I weighed in at 177.7 pounds and am now at 182.8. My goal is to weigh in at 185 or so. I gained about 3.31 pounds of "Lean mass" in two weeks -- I'm thinking most of it was water though. I'm considering dehydrating myself on Sunday to get a better idea of where I'm really at (a good time to do it, since there's no training and I'm out of creatine) Thoughts on this, anyone? I was consuming about 1500 calories over maintenance, I calculated out that about 400 of those calories went to fat. I think for this cycle I'm going to decrease to around 500 calorie surplus, as when I was at that at the beginning I was gaining muscle and losing bodyfat. We'll see how that works this time around.
My resistance training has been great, noticeable increases in strength. I should probably start recording here.
training
My training is going very well. Three or four of the newish people in my gym mistake me for a blue-belt who's just wearing a white belt for some reason. This is flattering -- even if it is coming from newer folks. A lot of people are asking when I'm going to get my blue, as well. On the no-gi side of things, I'm really enjoying it. I think I need to add more sparing time in however. Take downs are still sucktacular for me. My game plan may just be pulling guard and/or dropping and butt scooting around. (Subleague has no points, so this is totally acceptable)
injuries
.. are still a bitch. My right shoulder is doing ok, but my left shoulder is now sucking. I'm toughing it through, icing, and hoping they are both improved by the time Subleague rolls around.

conditioning
Did wall series, then pylos. Jumped around a lot! For the conditioning, did 3 rounds, 30 seconds on, 10 second rest at each station. one minute rest between rounds. Stations were: aerodynes, curl ups from the pull up position, dball slams, kb shake the baby, frog hops, and sprawls. I totally died on the the kb shake the baby on the third round -- my upper body really lacks endurance. Very frustrating! Oh well, just another thing for me to work on!

Fantastic! Taking Friday off really helped me out I think.
conditioning
started off with wall series, then did old man shuffles, various other nasty ass glute and core work. Then did agility ladder. Conditioning was 4 rounds, 30 seconds on, 10 seconds off, 1 minute rest between rounds. The stations were: shake the baby (apparently, we can't call them that anymore :(), agility ladder, jump thrusts, KB swings, single leg KB squats, wax on/wax off, aerodynes. I really got my ass kicked this work out, but I think i pushed it very well.
free rolling (gi)
Rolled exclusively with purple and above belts, was great fun. I had a couple times where I was attacking. I learned a really great submission from x-sides bottom/side. Wrap your arm from around the head grab your own gi or ankle. Take their wrist and push it behind your ankle. Pull with your leg, and you've got a nasty shoulder lock.
no gi
worked on back attacks, transitions to s-mount or mount. I did pretty well here. The back attacks were: RNC, RNC minus lock. Transition to S-mount dealt with trapping the arm and then arm-baring.
tourney rounds
Did four minute rounds. My first one I did well in, I'd never rolled with the guy so it was fairly exciting. Until I guillotined him in under 30 seconds. I ended up submitting him four or so times in the four minutes. Second round I don't remember, heh. Third round, did OK against a Blue, he was sneaky. Final round I was pretty tired, went up against someone who outweighed me by 50 or so pounds. He got me in the last few seconds with an armlock b/c I wasn't paying attention.
Phew. Good day and fun, too. :D

Annoyed.

Still taking it easy, thanks to my ankle. During warmup rolling, it pained me after my training partner did a simple sweep while I was standing.. grrrr. Anyway, we did armbar/x-choke from guard.

Good! It was my one year anniversary at training at Impact and BJJ!!!

Did guard armbars, triangles and what not -- did OK. Pretty basic stuff.
no-gi
Went over pitstop, one of my lacking positions. I did alright. Learned three subs; armbar, shoulder lock, and double armbar. Then rolled a little -- only hurt my ankle once or twice! yeay!

pitstop
High guard, but a blue belt yelled at me when I called it that for some reason. Heh heh heh.

Okay

Did attacks when opponent is in quarters -- I'm not very good at them. I'd rather take the back and get hooks in then **** around on the back trying to go for a choke. I think that could be the weeks of no-gi talking, though. It was really hard for me to not fight for something else when we were free rolling (but had to maintain and attack their quarters position)
Any tips out there for me in this?

My master plan is to start doing MMA when I get my blue; for now I want to focus on my ground game though. So, with enough hard work, I'll break into MMA this year. I hope!

Okay! Update.
I have been training like usual -- just not updating on here. Ooops. My bad. My ankle is a little better. I am competing this Saturday. I'm not anywhere near 100% (more like 80) but I know if I don't compete I'll regret it. Really regret it. So, I've signed up. I'm looking forward to it, I have no idea how well or how ill I'll do. If i were at 100%, I'd probably come in first. But, it is what it is.

My now overall record: 3 wins, 2 draws, 3 losess.
So I did end up competing and performed better then I feared but not as good as I hoped. Considering I went into it injured and with a two week gap in training and conditioning, I didn't perform too badly. I've been sick the past week, so I've not gotten any rolling in but am resuming today! (YES!)
I now need to cut out the 15 pounds I gained for the tourney, hoorah!

I did pretty good on this, that's a great triangle if I do say so myself.

I couldn't make anything happen in my guard; this shows up a lot in this tourney. I need to work on it. Also, I lost my contact lenses so I was distracted nearly the whole time.
V44QALlwmEE
I went into this one badly; I was intimidated by my opponents size. He was clearly a wrassler, so I wanted to take him out of his game. He didn't have very many submissions but once again, my guard game sucked.

Once again, guard didn't go over so well. I did manage to get to pit stop, but couldn't make anything happen. I'm looking for advice on how I could of countered his frame! I made a stupid mistake here, resulting in my loss. I should of stacked, but I thought I could just pull out because it didn't feel like he had a strong grip.
Here's to more training! As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated!

Great! Felt really good to get back to training!
conditioning
warmed up, 1 round of 60 seconds on, 30 seconds off of: single leg sit downs, DB ______, wheel of fun, side planks, kettle bell swings, some kind of crazy medicine ball wall slam, single leg dead lifts, hamstring pulls, skiers (which i totally totally sucked at).
For conditioning, 4 rounds of 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off at each station: db slams, aerodynes, frog hops
bjj1
Did toro pass, then transitioned to choke, then did free spar -- great times.
free roll
I did mostly work from guard with my partner -- something I need to work. I also got a good tip on countering the frame that caused me trouble in the pitstop.

Pretty good!
BJJ2
Passing the guard, transition to mount. Guard pass was under/over with a tripod, putting pressure on the floating ribs and smearing up. Cross face, push and plant your leg, walk your arm up to open them, and then break the quarter guard.

Cross posting, but it's my log so screw you guys!
So, today I competed in two divisions, gi and no gi.
I came in 2nd in no-gi and 3rd in gi. Total of 5 wins (four by submission) 2 losses (both on points)
Deets:
Gi: up to 194 (I weighed in at 190 with gi)
No-gi: up to 188 (I weighed in at 184)
Gi matches: 3 wins, 1 loss, 3rd place -- 1 point win, (loss was via points), kimura, paper-cutter choke
No gi matches: 2 wins, 1 loss -- RNC my first two, lost on points the second
I captured only a few on vids, no one was around to record me. :(
