Can you post her diet? If she is 5'4 & 185lbs then that is going to be a concern. Is she an active person? Sports? Never been in a gym? Has she joined a gym or is she going to workout at home?

I would recommend New Rules of Lifting for Women (the book, you can find it at any bookstore) and it has good diet recommendations as well.

She was active in Highschool but went through some major problems with family and stuff and thats when she gained her weight .. she used to be on the track team ... Er she has a gym membership but has problems becoming committed ... but now she says that she wants to be ...

Well if she's a former fitness fanatic then that's great... that's half the battle, really. Since (I assume) she enjoys running, she should get back into it. Personally, I'm a fan of Crossfit (www.crossfit.com) and the daily workouts. I'd still recommend New Rules of Lifting for Women.

You could try this website http://www.hotnfit.com/fat_loss/exercise.htm#top
That has tips on full body workouts and upper and lower body splits. When I first got into weight lifting I broke it down by body part and I would work opposite muscles together....but yeah that website will have some good information and it has routines and nutrition advice
