I'm a newbie to this website, but like it enough to join. I've been sailing raceboats for many years now and finally got on a team out of Texas. It took some time to get on a descent size program. There are several types of guys/gals in this sport

1. Rich- own the boat, or daddy does
2. College studs- guys that were All-Americans and Olympians
3. Intellects- usually incredible with numbers/angles/vectors etc.
4. Young fit guys that make the sails go up and down.

We'll, I'm in the #4 slot. Oh yea, I can sail and I've won some local races, but to move up to the national level a guy like me has to start by "pulling the ropes". So I workout like I race. Anyone else here into racing and what type of workouts help you?

I think 'lol' meaning your are 40, and categorizing yourself as a young/fit guy.

Got ya, believe or not, 40 is young in ocean racing. Lots of 60 year olds out there and most are tough as nails. Look up the ages of the Volvo 60 crews.

Immature as it may be, I got a cheap laugh because #4 sounded gay. You are not going to find many (if any) ocean racers, fencers, and people who do equestrian in the sports training section.

You have no idea what it takes to crew a 60ft yacht in 20ft seas, so don't try to compare it to fencing please. You should try it sometime and see just how strong you really are.....not only physically but mentally.
Not talking about some Yachtie cruising in their Catalina on Saturday either.

I went sailing for the first time a couple weeks ago in Galveston Bay on a J80, 20 knots of wind. I was thinking about doing a fractional ownership. I found it very boring. "Too much like masturbation with out the pay off." (from the movie Swordfish)

To be fair, I go skydiving for fun. If you want the most extreme rush of your life, jump out of a plane!

Yea, J80's are boring.

Ever tried Kite boarding? If your into jumping out of planes, try that.

Kite boarding looks like a lot of fun, though I think I would rather try wind surfing.

Hey mate i was just having a look through the forums for exactly what you were asking about.

I am a serious sailor having done several world championships and many off shore miles.

Most of the work i have done on the boat has been the "young fit" stuff you refered to (like mastman and grinding) and i train very had for this!

Most of the training i do, however, is not really sailing specific. I do a lot of power movements like deadlifts, squats etc but mostly i just train for size and fitness.

Have you found any sailing specific programs since you wrote this?

And to those guys giving sailing crap, come and do a "Sydney to Hobart" yacht race down the east coast of Australia... it will scare the **** out of you! Love it!
