View Full Version : Road to the Cage!
I've been training MMA, no-gi, MT, etc for about 2.5 years on & off. I believe with about 6-8 months of buckling down, I'll be fight worthy.
Walk around at 185ish. Most of my lifting is now more geared towards strength & endurance. I'm about to turn 38 so my recovery times aren't what they used to be.
Planning on hitting the dojo 2-3 times a week, would like to be more, but I have 4 kids so I'm being realistic. Lifting & doing circuits another 3 days a week.

High Performance in Lakeland. How about you?
Well MMA training is going to be more like 2 times a week unless my son's Saturday football games will be early. This explains why my training has been on & off, well that & injuries. ;)
I need some mats at the house. I help do strength training for a couple guys at the dojo & I'm sure we could add some rolling in the mix. It'd definitely be good for me to keep up my mat time.

I got tired of dealing with my homemade vest because the plates would bounce around too much (I stuffed 5lb and 10lb plates into the pockets) -- So I would have to get someone to tape the vest around my body.
Have you ever skipped rope or performed burpee's while wrapped in electrical tape in the summber time? It's f*cking serious.

Finally got to the dojo last night for the grappling class. We worked 6 different single variations & a couple defenses. Fun stuff. Normally I feel more comfortable w/ double legs, but after last night I think I like single legs better.

I've picked up equipment here & there over the years. I bought the squat rack from the local y for $50 as they got a new one. :)
With having kids & limited time to get away from the house, a home gym is where its at. If your woman is taking a while to get ready, I just say, I'm gonna go hit arms until you're ready to go. Bam! 20 minute tricep workout. I'm happy I got to workout & I'm not sitting there getting pissed off because she's making us late. :D

Yeah, I load up 135 on my bench at home and toss it like that. I don't go much heavier than that though, it is definitely a lot more reassuring to do it on the smith machine. Athough the fear of dropping it on yourself does wonders for you.
Sunday was big day. 3 guys from the dojo came over for a leg workout.

I have been bad about lifting period lately though, but that split lets me hit everything once a week in only 3 days of lifting.

Oh, how my legs felt after squatting many, many sets with a great multitude of iron plates on a bar upon my back. The trembling, yea! the trembling, made it questionable whether I would walk again. lol. No, but I need money to fix it. and money for the seminar.
I'll be working more on my cardio starting tonight. Gonna do some circuits after work.
Did a back workout after work yesterday. Then some circuits around 8:30. Felt great. Cardio is picking up, thankfully.
Circuits were 3 3 minute rounds, moving from exercise to exercise until the bell sounded.
BB Squats
Lat pulldowns
Suspended pushups
Tire Flips
Alt DB presses

I need a tire so I can do some flips. Good to see old age isn't slowing you down, and instead you're gaining some speed.

Thanks. And you can get tires for free. They have to pay disposal fees for them & let you take them.

I'd need to find a place to flip them. I suppose I could do it outside my apartment building, but I don't know if I'm ready to expose my tire flipping abilities to the world quite yet.

lol. Yeah, that may seem a bit awkward.
Rested Fri & Sat.
Yesterday hit chest, tri's & core. Focusing on explosiveness. Will do legs & a circuit tonight.
Did a bunch of squats & calf raises on Mon.
last night went to no-gi. Practiced some variations of the arm bar & arm triangle from side mount. Very nice. Rolled for 30 minutes with only 2 1 minutes breaks throughout.
Getting my cardio back finally. Last night I did 5 3 minute rounds of circuits.
bb squats
lat pulldowns
suspended pushups
tire flips
alt db presses
made it through 10 4/5 circuits. I felt as though I could've done more, but it was almost 10 last night & the wife wanted me to come inside.
Staph infection on my back. Will take a couple days off from lifting & a couple weeks from grappling.

This infection officially sucks. The doctor had to cut it open again today & didn't use any anesthesia. Man it hurt. 5 minutes of pure hell.

God damn dude, that's some serious ****.
I hope you get better. :/
The infection part is gone, now just letting the hole heal up. Should be back on the mat in another 2 weeks. Hopefully.

good luck reps
Staph is gone. Wound almost totally healed. Will be back at the dojo next week, hopefully.
Hit some circuits yesterday. 3 5 minute rounds. 8 reps each, moving from exercise to exercise. 1 minute break between rounds. Squats, lat pulldowns, suspended pushups, tire flips.
Afterwards hit the stadium for some standing hurdle jumps & run the bleachers. Bleachers 3 times no break, 8 minutes, 26 seconds.
Will rest tonight & hit more circuits tomorrow.
3 5 minute rounds of circuits last night. Felt much better than Sunday. After the circuits did 20 minutes worth of intervals on the treadmill.
Weighed in at 195.
Alright a friend of mine has his next fight in 10 weeks. So I figure I'll do a mock fight prep along w/ him. first 3 weeks, concentrate on strength, cardio, & technique. second 3 weeks focus on explosiveness, cardio & technique. 7th week, muscular endurance, cardio & techinque. final 3 weeks, muscular endurance, cardio & technique.
Yesterday we did chest & tri's. all heavy weight, low reps. bench, inc db presses, weighted dips, tri pushdowns, abs.
At the end of chest we tried to do a tabata with pushups. LOL. It was pathetic. I don't recommend trying this after a heavy chest workout. We pushed ourselves through it, but it was tough & didn't impress anyone.

Tabatas kick my ass as a workout alone, let alone after already lifting.

I like the idea behind them, teaching the body to recover quickly.
Yesterday went for a 2 mile walk w/ the Mrs., came home & did:
deads
bent over rows
lat pulldowns
took a break for a few hours, then:
db shrugs
delt burnouts

Good to see you back.
My mat time has been zero due to a staph infection on my back about 4 weeks ago.
My right piriformis is a bit inflamed from doing the deads Tuesday so I skipped legs last night & did chest & abs. A LOT of abs.

I have actually been doing a lot more abs. My diet in the last month or so has helped to reveal some abs and I have gotten used to seeing them and want more so I don't hate doing abs as much as usual.

I love doing abs. Just not pushups.

Did back, traps, abs & delts last night, all explosive (except for abs).

delt burnout
10 minutes worth of knee raises using ab straps
Was busy yesterday.
Did some incline db presses
dips
tri pushdowns
Will rest tonight, then do legs tomorrow & a circuit routine.
Woke up Saturday with a muscle strain between my shoulder blades.
Feels better now, not 100%, but I'll close. I'll do chest tonight & hit back on Thursday, should be fine.
Did squats last night. 4 sets of 20 w/ 225, all reps explosive. did a little hamstring & calf work as well. And abs. Took it kind of easy.
Weight still hanging around 194.
Planning on going to the dojo Thursday...finally.

Just got some wrestling mats for FREE!
I've been training like a mad man lately. And its only going to get more intense from here on out. I can see myself fighting by the end of the year, with no injury setbacks, that is.

oddly enough. :)
Saturday did 3 5 minute circuits, followed by 2 rounds of grappling.
Sunday did heavy chest & tris. Then a 100+ yd truck push. Sparring drills, light grappling.
Gonna either hit the dojo or do heavy legs tonight. Maybe a tabata circuit too.
Did heavy legs Thursday.
Yesterday did 4 5 minute circuits, then stadium runs. My lower back started hurting so I didn't get to spar with the other guys.
Still training. Getting more technical on my ground game. Need to get more standup in though.
sunday did 3 5 minutes of circuits. truck pushes, stadium bleacher runs & filed sprints. then a few rounds of grappling. looking phenomenal throughout, as usual.
Been a while. I figure if I keep my log I'll be more accountable/motivated to train. Now that the warm is moving back in I can get my cardio back. I get asthma in cold weather so my training has taken a huge hit. That and the fact I've only been to the dojo once a week at best. Merely been doing weights. Not by choice.

I really like your blog and i respect your work. I’ll be a frequent visitor.
update. last saturday at open mat I rolled w/ a purple belt. got the takedown & then tapped him via americana.
next roll he heel hooked the crap out of me. its still a bit swollen a week later.
third roll he grabbed my ankle again & I just gave up to not endanger it.
fourth roll I had him in my guard, tried to lock in a kimura, he rolled out of it but I still had his arm isolated. I was in his half guard trying to get my leg free & *clunk clunk* went my knee. feels like its my LCL. still a bit tender, can't twist without it hurting a bit. minimal swelling. I let it rest this week & will let it rest next week too & go from there. Sucks as I was feeling great.
knee feels better, not 100% though. Will do some light rolling tomorrow, no leg locks.;)

Lifting & doing circuits another 3 days a week.
the dojo? don't you mean the mcdojo?
4 1/2 months later my knee is still keeping me off the mat. I have insurance, but a really high deductible. I may catch a ride to Mexico w/ Joe Stevenson so I can get an MRI. :D

thanks man. I appreciate it.
I've been able to do some heavy bag work, so I'll probably start getting back in for boxing & then more as my knee improves.
