View Full Version : do fats before bed inhibit GH response?

always heard it was insulin from carbs/fast protein that inhibited GH and have been using a high fat/protein meal before bed.

TM: What about managing growth hormone?

LL: Growth hormone is more of an "abstinence" hormone. For Testosterone, eat fat. For insulin, eat carbs. But GH is more of a "don't." Fatty acids and carbohydrates can be inhibitory upon GH release.

That being said, exercise plays a role in GH release, at least for the younger set. In young people, exercise can cause a real nice GH spike, but for the 30-somethings and beyond, it's more like a sad little blip.

Exercise aside, two-thirds of all the GH in a man is released about 90 minutes after falling asleep. Avoiding sugary and fatty meals right before bed, plus allowing one hour to fast before retiring, may help to maximize a GH surge.

But all that being said, GH and muscle growth is hugely overblown, at least GH by itself. Now, GH plus Testosterone and insulin is extremely anabolic. So get enough sleep to get GH, get enough fat for Testosterone, and get enough carbs to get insulin.

Right. Elevated blood sugar via the carbs is one inhibition mechanism, granted insulin is a trigger for somatostatin as well. Fat does too.

Also note:

A rise in serum GH concentrations occurs 3–5 h after oral glucose administration in man (682, 683). This delayed GH increment is preceded by initial suppression of plasma GH levels for 1–3 h

In the human, we infer that oral glucose acts rapidly to suppress GH release by increasing hypothalamic somatostatin release, thus suppressing serum GH for 1–3 h. The reduced GH release results in an increase in the pituitary stores of GH. When somatostatin release declines, endogenous GHRH secretion is activated reciprocally, and available pituitary stores of GH are released, leading to the "rebound" increase in serum GH levels. Since the administration of pyridostigmine, which may inhibit somatostatin secretion and release GHRH, potentiates the late GH rise induced by the oral glucose, we infer that hypothalamic somatostatin release may not be shut off completely, and/or GHRH discharge may be increased partially, at the time of the 3–5 h delayed GH rise after oral glucose injection (693).

BUT, this would all lead back to the question of the dose-timing-response and its effect on peak magnitudes & timings, the AUC and the overall physiologic significance or lack thereof.

as the article said, it's overblown. Don't worry about it; it's negligable

overblown in muscle growth. but still not unimportant, just that it's not an anabolic steroid or insulin. IGF-3 is significant for muscle growth, but in doses higher than you get from GH.

there are plenty of people who take it for losing fat, joint problems, and looking and feeling younger, which GH does have a very significant effect on.

gh rawks imo <3

anyway .. the carb thing is true, but why not fatty stuff? i eat casein w/ peanutt butter or 2 whole eggs with meat before bed to keep in anabolic state.. i never found anything saying fat stunts gh.. specially since it doesnt spike insulin

Yes it does. Insulin and blood sugar are not the only regulators. Somatostatin can be increased by fat intake which is antagonistic to GH.

So much for that idea :)

"FFA may well participate in the regulation of pituitary GH secretion in the human and sheep, since GH secretion is stimulated when plasma FFA levels are reduced, whereas conversely increased FFA levels block GH secretion "
