hey guys. so i see a lot of people customize their guns. m4/ar15 is the same thing? i want one but just like the one will smith uses in i am legend. i dont know all the upper, lower different stuff. i want it to look tactical, i just dont know what to look for. i was looking at gunbroker and a lot of them just look plain with the long stock and barrel.

m4 is what the milltray uses it has a 14inc barrel and can fire full auto/burst(maybe wrong on that but i think it can go fullauto) .
they allso use the m16 which is the same thing as a ar15 but the m16 can fire burst and the ar15 cant. the ar15 allso has a 16inc barrel. most of the mods you see on a ar15 are after market and someone has add them to the gun. stright off the rack the will be bear-bones. (anyone fill free to corect anything i misstaed)

They've the parts list to make an almost exact clone of Will Smiths M4 though... If I run across the thread on ARfcom I'll post them.
OP, you'd have to buy a Basic M4 (A4 not A2) and then buy the parts and customize it if you want it similar to Will's. Since the light/laser manufacturer is now out of business you'd have to get lucky and score a used light/laser.
Since the scope alone costs around 1000$ you'd probably have to buy a clone (for anywhere from 50-150$)...
If I find the detailed parts list I'll post it.

Depending where you are in the United States (heaven forbid you are in California or New Joisey), you can build the exact clone of Will Smith's M-4.
Honestly? The most economical way is probably for you to buy the lower and upper receivers separately. You can get the upper without having to go through an FFL (licensed dealer such as your local gunshop). You can go to Rock River Arms website to see if they have the upper you need, then you can shop around online and also contact your local dealer. Check out www.midwayusa.com or Brownells or gunbroker.com or cheaperthandirt.com. You may even be able to get an upper directly from Rock River. Shop around for an upper. I'm advertising Rock River because I shoot competitively and I think they have the best out of box accuracy. There is also DPMS and Colt (very expensive).
As far as lower receiver, you will have to get it through an FFL. I would get a complete Rock River Arm lower and change out the buttstock to a collapsible one, so that it will look like an M4.
The scope, if I remember, is by EO-Tech. You can go to www.riflescopes.com as they have the best scope pricing.
Another plus to getting a separate lower and upper is that buying a complete AR is a lot more expensive. The reason for this is some goofy tax laws that the liberals passed. (Go figure).
Hope this helps.

Scope was actually an ACOG. I think it's a TA11

You're right. I stand corrected. I just looked at the link.
Personally, though, an M4 is ideal for CQB so I would have chosen Aimpoint. It is so much better for target acquisition at close range, even out to 100 yards. Just an opinion.

thanks everyone. i know i need to read more and was hoping someone would post some good sites and they did. thanks for the replies.
yes manosteel i know it was a movie prop i was stating thats the look id like when im done.
norwich, thanks man i read before about people doing that, buying seperate lower and uppers but just done know alot and have been trying to learn. i dont want to buy some crap part. doing what you said how much do you think it would cost just to have the upper, lower, stock just so the gun would shoot? not with the extras, like scope and light and stuff.

Just the basic gun. Let's see..
A complete Rock River (RRA) Lower with a standard trigger is probably $300 - $400.
Change out the buttstock with collapsible - another $100 or so.
A complete upper with the correct specification (i.e. picatinny rails, etc..) is another $700 - $1000.
ACOG scope add another $1000.
We're talking at least $2000. But you will have one hell of a toy, my friend!! There's a lot of cool factor in this M4.
