I wanted to start a training journal keep my motivated and see my progress. Little background. I'm 20 years old. Live in Long Island, NY. I work at restaurant 25-30 hours a week usually lower the better for me lately. I'm also a college student at a 4 year university. I'm an accounting major and I'm taking the bulk of my major classes now so finding time to train has been hard these past few years but I need to find time. So bye bye social life atleast till summer.
When I got to college I did the usual eat alot of fast food partied chilled and became a bum. I was 199 after wrestling season my senior year in 2/06 and balloned up to 260 11/08 which is crazy never thought I would let myself go like that. I miss having motivation and sports just got me motivated to train because I want to be the best and perform at my best. I actually wanted to train in jiu jitsui after high school since I fell in love with wrestling too late (tried out my senior year) but couldn't afford it at the time didn't have a job.
I haven't lifted consistently in 2 years ever since I graduated from high school. I lifted mostly for football which I played for three years, track for one year and wrestling one year. So I have a decent background in atheletics and weights.
I'm currently training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsui. I'm a white belt and have been training since November but more consistently since January. Finally grew tired of being a fat lazy unathletic bum and got off my ass found one of the best BJJ gyms on long Island and my journey to victory starts here....

Today I went to fundamentals BJJ. I'm trying to go to BJJ at least 2-3x a week. I think my biggest problem with BJJ is that I tend to forget alot of the techniques and I guess spaz when I roll but not really spaz more like revert to trying to wrestle which works sometimes and doesn't most of the time depending on who I roll with. I really like drilling. Today we went over defenses and offenses of the turtle position. Mainly worked on how to pull some into your guard from turtle. When on top how to spin around your opponnet break them down and attempt to put the hooks in. I remember it now but when it comes time to roll it's anonther story . I'll work on it I had the same problem with other stuff. Only solution is DRILL DRILL DRILL. . Also I got my 2nd stripe on my white belt. :) Once I get my 3rd stripe I can go to unlimited classes and what I'm really looking forward to is the striking class that will be available that I can attend. Hopefully no injuries consistent and good training will get me my 3rd stripe before summer starts.

Tomorrow I will train again in BJJ. Hopefully there will be a snow day so instead of school in the AM i can hit the gym and try out this new workingclassfitness workout I got a while back. I need to get back to consistency on the weights. Oh yeah this morning I woke up at 245 Lets GO!!!! In december I was waking up at like 256-257.

Horrible Horrible workout. I skipped going to BJJ because of a dinner I had to go to at night and went to the gym tried to do this workout I brought and I just don't like it at all. I also did some back excersises but I was so completely lost in the gym and also I tweaked my Hamstring and I'm feeling it today 1/29. I def need to warmup more instead of just going into the weights. Also my numbers are significantly lower than what they used to be but just trying to work on my form and getting back into the groove of things. I'm taking today off to let my hamstring heal soo stupid I barely did any warmup before the front squats.

Make sure to rest also bro proper nutrition and rest are vital after going heavy. I been training MMA off and on for 4 years now so keep me posted on your training maybe well meet up one day thru a show and kick some ass im looking to get back into training later this year.I normally train NO GI so i dont got a belt.

DONJUANPIMPIN

Yeah I haven't trained no gi yet. I have to wait until my 3rd stripe. My nutrition is pretty good. I don't really count calories because my schedule so hectic but I usually eat pretty clean. Don't drink soda. Stopped drinking alcohol only for a special occasion plus I think it's a pretty good way to hold out till my 21st. You should def. try out working with the gi even though No Gi correlates better to MMA. It know only helps out your no gi game but it self defense in real life situations and is just fun overall

Last day of the month. I'm up to my 17th official class according to check in card. I feel like I've been there longer. Looks like I got a long road ahead of me. I believe I will have opportunity to get my 3rd stripe once I get to 32 official classes hopefully by then the semester will be over and I'll just go to BJJ everyday God willing. Any today class was pretty much the same as the other class I went to in the beginning of the week. Warmup, Shrimp, Forward Rolls. Technique. We learned a takedown for when some throws a jab. Pretty much shot in for the takedown. Only thing I mess up on is head placemat. I really need to try and like debug myself of wrestling semi because I keep trying to revert everything into BJJ but it should be the other way around lol. Than we worked out of turtle.
First Technique (One Side Example)
Get hip control on top of your opponent in turtle. With your left hand grab his left wrist. With your right knee place near his elbow so that you can later put in a hook. Now with your left hand open up the door to put your other foot in for the hook. Flatten your opponent out. Proceed to attempt a rear naked choke
2nd Technique
Same as before but instead of getting wrist control. Grab the collar the gi. Roll your opponent over to the other side. Example. Left arm grabs collar of the gi on the left side of opponent. Roll to the right so that you are on your back and take your opponents back. While rolling put in hooks but do not lock legs place close to each other as possible. Afterward. proceed to Rear Naked choke by going across his neck with your right hand still following the example above grab his collar. Allow no slack. Pull across with the right and down with the left on the other side of his gi.
3rd Technique
Pretty much your in turtle. You block your opponents knees with your hand. Push back place your butt up and do a weird type of turn and pull into guard. Example In turtle. Push back with both hands. Your right leg goes to his LEFT hip. Try to hook it and flow with it into guard.
Rolled for about 10-15 minutes. I did alright don't really remember I got mount onto a few people and tried to get the RNC but only caught it once. My conditioning is improving that's for one. I need to be quicker off bottom and when on top of turtle position need to keep no space and more weight on them. From what I can remember.

Today weighted in at 244.5. feels good to be making some progess. Alot of people have been asking me if I've been losing some weight. Also feel a lot more energy when I'm doing BJJ. For Feb. My goal is to way around 234 my ultimate goal is to be 230 on March 30th but I think that may be pushing it but we'll see I think 234 is more realistic but I can still pull off some newbie gains. Today might be a cheat day because of the superbowl but I haven't really decided what i'm doing yet. I got a ton of hw I need to do as well. Also taking the day off. Tomorrow I'll hit up some cardio after school

Weighted in 244.0 this morning feel good. ****ty weather made for a small class size during BJJ. Took me like 20 minutes longer to get to class and I had to shovel a bit but regardless got to class. Today we worked on side control.

First move we did after warmups I had alot of trouble with for some reason.

This move is for you to be able to stand up and create space if your down and your opponent is standing up. Like in MMA when a dude is on his back and his kicking pretty much that what we were doing.
So on your back you want to kick/push at his knees to push him back create space. So you kick and when he is back far enough his lead foot you take your leg and kick it straight while you apply pressure to your same arm and post on the opposite leg. Then you pull your kicking leg back in a circle motion to stand up and have some separation.
Ex. Guy A is leading with his left leg standing up. Guy B sittin on butt. Kicks his right led toward guys B left leg. Guy B post on his left leg and pushes off on his right hang. Right leg still keeping space between the lead leg and himself. Than pulls right leg back while standing up back in fighting stance.

Side Control

First move we did was side control to arm bar. First get in side control. Check hip with left arm then right arm goes over the head. His puts his arm around my head. I sprawl walk to his head. Than get on my knees now that arm thats was over my head pull it towards me and get him on his side. Left leg over his face and right leg stands up on his back sit back pull arm bar.

Next we did Kimura same way but you want to pull the arm break his grip if he has any. Pull arm up and towards you. I think it was called the kimura lol.

Last move was from bottom of side control. So the top guy attempts to check my hip I put my hand under his towards his arm pit. I scoot out Ie shrimp out. Turn to my belly grab the closets leg. Then from that single leg grab two legs and pull in. Afterwards don't move to the front or he'll put you in his guard instead go towards his back.

Than we rolled. I think I did alright. I rolled with a new guy but I think my conditioning is getting better. This guy was kind of my size. I miss rolling with smaller guys you guys are just so speedy and get me winded so fast. I kind of did that to him today but he was pretty good. pulled off a sweet arm bar on me that I did not see coming. I still not to good on pulling off submissions during rolling just better positions. But hey Positions b4 Submissions. It will all come in time I guess. Just got to stay consistent and drill more. I def. fill like I'm getting better and today was like my 18th class. technically 20th but the first two classes don't really count.

I can't wait for summer def just going be training and working. No school No test. Sigh I can't wait. I'm going try to add some standup to my training come summertime. Right now I'll stick to jiu jitsui pay off my bills and start saving. Privates in standup in the summer. I don't know whether to do Muay Thai, American Kick Boxing or just reg boxing. Also might start wrestling club soon we'll see. There one that's two nights a week but than I wouldn't be able to go to Jiu Jitsui on Tuesday night and theres one really far 50min away that's like 15 bucks a session and I could go on sunday since I don't do nothing now that football is over. We'll see. I need keep my grades up first slacking on studying. Anyway tomorrow most likely I'll do either anonther jits session or weights.

Do you use north-south side control a lot when rolling?

Had to look it up lol. No not really yesterday was the first time really I learned a transition from side control to north-south. I kept trying to get to that position while rolling but the guy jus kept following me so I kept faking like I was going for north south he would trail me and boom jump right back into mount easily with a knee to the belly and slide my leg over or just jump over his leg trying to block me.

Did a little rolling before class on Open Mat to get warmed up. Today we had one of the purple belts run class. He's really good I think he's close to his brown. He's warm up are a workout in themselves which is really good. Never can have too much conditioning. Today we worked on an escape from a muay thai clinch.
We set up in Muay thai opponnet has firm grip on the crown of your head. You try to pull your head out but you can't well to combat his is to with one of your free arms. Push his shoulder which would make his arms lock out straight which will allow you to pull your head out easier.
After we worked on this we drilled side control again but instead of going North-South(thanks croaker) we stayed in side control. Worked our hips to scrap the hand checking you and did the arm bar from there.
We also worked on posuture from guard.
After Class I rolled from about 830 till 930. I was fried. I still am. I also got to take some shots using my wrestling a little bit since it was a free roll. I'm really rusty :( . Still had a good time and taking shots with a gi on= NASTY mat burn on my knees (no romo)

Tomorrow I will try to lift weights hopefully not to sore. I need to stay organized with school work and working out. So my tentative schedule

Monday- School 9 till 8. Can lift after but usually have hw due by 12 midnight
Tuesday- Jitsui 6 till 7. No school. No work. Possible study day.
Wednesday- School 9 till 6. No work. Jiu Jitsui 730 till 9.
Thursday- Can Lift. Can Work possible 4-11. No school
Friday- Work def from 4-11. Can Lift
Saturday- School 830 till 11. Jiu Jitsui 11:15 till 12:15. Work 330 till 2am
Sunday- Can Lift. But usually tired from Saturday so usally my lazy day but should try to get more studying in and possible a wrestling workout.

So guys what do you think try a 2 day split or a 3day split??
Also I really need to work on GPP. So maybe a two day full body workout split and one day GPP. Than other days just do cardio if I can?? Or will be overtraining like crazy.

How often are you free rolling?

Croaker
02-05-2009, 02:54 PM
The easiest way to switch to north-south is to act like you're in your good side control, take your outside elbow and jam it into his head, then make a fist with your inside hand and make a fist. Plant that fist against their hip, then swivel. They won't be able to keep up with that way.

How often are you free rolling?

Right now only once a week. The way it's setup the beginners only got one free open mat days. Once I get my 3rd stripe I could go to advanced classes and they get open mats 30 minutes after each class and one open mat on sundays. We do roll like 10 minutes during each class but sometimes it sucks due to mat space that we have to go like King of The hill type rolling which is cool get to get different people but you also get like a minute or so rest depending on how many people and how quick the matches go

Nice thanks Croaker I'm going try that next time

Wow I've been slacking haven't posted in almost a week. I had a BJJ session on Saturday we did mostly drills practices single leg takedowns, knee slapping drills to help our shots than we rolled. Side control again.

My schedule sucks. Taking a toll on my body. I feel really heavy and lazy haven't done anything because of work and school. Tomorrow after school I will be going to BJJ plus tomorrow is open mat after class which should be a fun way to get back into things. My plan for the week is BJJ-Wed
BJJ-Thur
Weights-Fri and Sun
BJJ Sat

I still need to figure out a better nutrition plan because I've been eating good for like 2 months now but I need to start counting macros and calories now and get serious. I want to be in decent shape by summer and hopefully be ready to compete in a few summer BJJ tourneys if my skill-set is up to par by than.

I feel really lazy haven't done anything because of school, work, and social event I had to take care of. So I got back into the jist of things today after school. Also I've decided that I want to run a half marathon in May or just bump down to a 10k depending on how far I can run. Also I think I want to participate in NAGA. Alot of people were talking about tourneys and I still feel kind of lost but hey if I can have a wrestling match after wrestling 2 weeks I think I can do a jiu jitsui tourney. It's in two months. I got to pick up the training seriously. Right now this morning I woke up at 244 after eating ****ty for a week. NO WAY am I going to do this tourney 225+. I need to be sub 225 some how someway. 20 lbs in 2 months going be rough but if I man up I think it's possible. Alright now what you all came to see my training.

Today I did another Fundamentals Class. Warmup was pretty good didn't feel too winded since I haven't done anything workout productive since Saturday. We also been doing one sided shrimps which I like. We worked on guard stuff today. First we worked on creating a pendulum movement to simulate getting an arm bar. Focusing on generating force by swinging the hips and creating the angle to sink in that arm bar. 2nd we worked on posture stuff today. Pretty much the correct way to standup in someone's guard.
After those drills were completed we worked on the arm-bar. So today we focused on grabbing the cloth of the gi around your opponents wrist. So my right hand grabs his left wrist and control cloth or wrist control which ever you can get cloth being preference. Than after that you pivot your hips up. Slip your left hand in a hook against his right thigh. You grab the thigh and like a boom box you bring that leg close to your ear. After that you open up your guard bring your right leg close to the guard to swing it around your opponents head. Now you can attempt the arm bar.
Now if he grabs your thigh or pull his arm bar out you can readjust scoot out and attempt the triangle.
Today we also had a nice long roll session which was good rolled against a few different guys and this very nice new blue belt who literally opened my eyes this guy did nothing but did so much. Like effortless no muscle no strength clam and just attacked. Damn Silent Killer man just watched what I was trying go for like let me go for it than just stuffed it every time. I loved it.

Today we did Spider Guard. I like learning more stuff. I really didn't get to remember all the steps that much since I aint drill that much since I was in an odd numbered group and it was taking a long time to get all the steps down. We rolled today and I caught someone in an arm bar felt good I did the same step up from yesterday. I feel I'm starting to peice stuff together. Just need to stay consisentent 3 days a week BJJ till I can go 5-6x a week. Need to condition fix the diet and find a new lifting routine and implement it and boom success.

Today we worked on armbar and sweeps from the arm bar. Specifically worked on when someone has you in an arm bar to grab your bicep stack them up knees to their head to help ease your arm out. Sprawl and work for side control. Also just praticed arm bar. When I first started I hated arm bar but I feel like I'm getting better. Also overally I'm starting to feel like I kind of understand things better when I'm rolling and what to go for. I'm still getting sweeped and tapped but I feel like I have a better confidence and defense. I just need to drill my submissions more. I can't wait till I can go to unlimited sessions so I can see the results pour in. It's all about that muscle meomory baby. Hitting the weights tomorrow and I need to adjust my diet because this past week or so I've been eating like **** I gained back a pound or two so I need go hard these coming weeks

Mount Week.

Today we worked on mount. I def feel like I've gotten better on mount before when we did mount I would get bucked off easily now I can keep my balance easier. Today on mount we learned the guillotine.
First grab collar like your going for a collar choke if opponent lifts his head than feed your arm underneath to wrap in the guillotine than lift your hips up and grab your own wrist to finish and sink in the guillotine.
Next move was pretty cool called the gift-wrap. Pretty much you grab the collar weight down on your opponent if they offer resistance trying to bench press you push their arm out the way towards their body than bring your knee to there head and bring your other leg up now grab their wrist and push down on the elbow. From here you can rain down punches or take the back if they go to their knees to escape.

I need to work on my shrimping and elbow escapes on the bottom cause they suck. Also I need to hit the weights this week I feel very unaccomplished haven't ran or lifted outside of BJJ in a week or so. Also I want to get on my stretch/flexibility game. I was skimming through the ruber guard book and some of the stretches and positions are crazy. I'm not trying jump in rubber guard yet still got a long way to go before I start throwing crazy stuff into my un-molded game but being more flexible would never hurt.

Yeah I saw those. I'm going to start stretching more now. I see alot of guys doing this. What I have a question on I've always been told it's bad to stretch a cold muscle so if I was just randomly stretching throughout the day wouldn't that hinder me in anway?

I streched today yay!!! lol I got to class like 20 minutes early worked on some streches. I really lost some flexibility becoming a lard ass. Anyway today was mount like yesterday. First we worked a takedown defense.
Bear Hug to knee bar. So if some grabs you from behind and bear hugs you. You will imediatly shift your weight to the ground by going on all fours. After that you will position your legs so that in between both of them is your opponnets one foot. You will grab that one foot with both hands causing your opp. to fall. Than you will shimmy up on his legs pull up for a knee bar.

Next from mount we worked on taking the back. So on mount and for some reason your opponnet goes to his back you will then sink the hooks in. Than very opponnet for me (I forgot to do this while rolling and he escaped twice from it) grab his collar by going underneeth his armpit not over his shoulder. Than roll to the opposite side and go for collar choke or RNC.

After that we worked on going for an americana but the opponnet grabs his own arm and we take that arm to pull the arm bar. Also how to break his grip if he is grabbing his arm to block the arm bar.

Today we rolled and I feel like my flow is getting better. Aww man I can't wait to take more classes. Summer time if I don't get an internship my goal is like 10 classes a week right now I'm at like 3 lol. Today I was able to keep mount position and actually got the back once but lost it. I got an americana and a guillotine that we worked on last night. It's cool I feel like I'm actually starting to peice it together. Man I think I found a new drug. Let me get a 20 bag of jits lol. Haha flexibilty helps me alot with rubber guard and the prevention of my guard being passed. Im naturally flexible luckily I can put my legs behind my head without any previous flexibilty training but im starting a stretching program like eddie bravos.

Yeah I saw those. I'm going to start stretching more now. I see alot of guys doing this. What I have a question on I've always been told it's bad to stretch a cold muscle so if I was just randomly stretching throughout the day wouldn't that hinder me in anway?

We sort of worked on the smount yesterday with the giftwrap. I need to work more on my flexibility

not really, just ease into it...every 10-15 seconds go a bit deeper as you exhale

We have worked that Americana attempt and transiton into an Armbar as well. That is actually how I pulled off my first armbar free rolling I think. I go for the American all the time anyway so it is easy for guys I roll with to get fixated on it.

I need to start stretching more at home too. I stretch a lot at the gym and my flexibility has improved but there is no reason I can't do more at home. Especially while watching TV or something.

BJJ

Worked on Elbow Escaping from High Mount and anonther choke from taking the back.
I have a problem when rolling. I don't create enough space. When someone has me mounted it's hard for me to get them back in the guard. I find I get stuck on the bottom and all the weight on me makes it hard to breathe. I think I really have to work on angles and shrimping out. I usually try to bridge get some space but with bigger guys I feel that won't work. I'm kind of scared cause I'm going compete soon and I work with a lot of smaller guys like 50-60lbs less and will I get smacked in my division. Luckily these smaller guys are better and I'm learning alot from them so hopefully I won't do to bad when I compete

Croaker
02-22-2009, 09:50 AM
The best thing I ever learned about escaping mount, as don't let them consolidate. The split second they get their leg over, you bridge and shrimp. Once they consolidate, they're in the advantage. So attack while they are still transitioning.

Man I need to start working out Monday nights or sunday afternoons because two day breaks suck brock lesnar tattoos. Anyway today was BJJ. Kind of confusing. We did side control but from Judo position. The verdict I don't like it felt very weird. When I went for stuff from class when rolling it was pretty much "unpossible" to do anything so I just reverted back to regular side control. I got a couple mounts but no submissons.
My mind blanks out when I roll lol. Today was a vigirous session though I rolled with a pretty good blue belt and some other good guys today so my endurance was tested. When Im getting like bear hugged choke around my neck I need to put my hand near my ear my instructor said so I can breathe better and cut off some of the pressure. Also I tried that gullotine from last week but I got flipped over. I think I found a new setup I'm going try next time. Which is go for the gullotine and let him try to roll me and just take the back instead because I was def caught off guard. Also my bottom game sucks :(
I can't one more month or so I think I should get my third stripe and BOOM!!! Morning classes and beginner classes and maybe a No Gi or striking class while I'm at it.

Side control.
Worked a pendelum sweep
Hooking the leg to hip out and push knee in to put guard.
For some reason this week is turning into a bad week for BJJ. I have no idea I feel like I can't understand the moves. I feel like I'm doing all these side control moves wrong. Today we tried a pendulum sweep. Pretty much I got it but I def was just muscling it it wasn't fluid. Also I seen someone put a variation of rubber guard on me today in open mats. I have no game plan. I just started to feel like I was getting BJJ but now I feel like I was getting close to land and someone came with a boat dragged me right back into the middle of the ocean. My mind blanks out I get the good positions and forget any submissions how to do it. I needto drill more to get this muscle memory. :( really frustrated and my endurance has got a little better. I really need to reevaluate my training and get back on the ball. Theres a few tourneys coming up in April. Right now I'm 20lbs out for the weight class I want to be. My diet is ****. My weight lifting plan is random and never consistent. Also my jiu jitsui either I don't stay tight enough on the offense and on the defense I can't get separation. I can't wait till summer hopefully I'll be better by then.

Kid gets his arm bars in tight almost broke my arm I had to kind of like yell for the tap because my hand was caught under my own body so I couldn't tap would have been bad. Never want to be that guy to not roll another day cause he ain't tap. I don't care I feel it's tight don't think I'm going get out I'm tapping no matter what.

I have been missing armbars like crazy but that is a good thing. I used to not even try them because I didn't want to risk giving up position but you aren't going to get them right if you don't try them at all.

Today we had our seminar at our school with Flavio Almeida. It was very well run and had a good time went over alot of moves. Very packed house.
From what I can remember.
We worked on a takedown where you break your opponents grip on your collar with two hands and you transition into a single leg takedown while you hold the belt and depending on how his is positioned you could do a single or a double. Which I thought was really cool and fluid the way he showed it to us.
Than we worked on half guard stuff. This is a blur to me right now because I can't remember anything about it. We also learned a cool choke I think most people would know it was a baseball choke. I liked the seminar for the most part than alot of the upper belts got to roll with him which was cool seeing him just make everything look so easy. Great instructor. Nice warmup lol. And just great explanations can't wait till I'm further along so I could absorb more of the info better.

Today we worked on the back mount. I realized that I have no legs and getting hooks are pretty easy. The one thing I need to work on is not crossing my legs together which I do pretty easily since my legs wrap around easy. We worked on collarchokes from the back. We also worked on the escape which is grabing the tricep and wrist tucking the chin down and attempting to turn into the opponnet.

Rolling
Felt pretty good. I got out of back mount into a full mount, standup. I only got sumbitted once which was pretty good for the first time going against mount. Everyone I rolled against said I felt very strong. I need to get back into the weights because I feel weak as **** actually lol

Today was pretty flipping sick.

Today we worked with one of the purple belt instructors pretty good. I think he's pretty close to getting his brown belt. And this guy LOVES conditioning. It sucks when your doing it but at the end of the day conditioning>no conditioning. To tell you the truth we did NO ROLLING and No lie I think it was the best class ever. We did a lot of drilling. Worked on single leg takedowns. One of my favorites. We worked on alot of takedown conditioning. Single leg hopping drill, knee slapping game, foot slapping game, pummling. Like it's cool cause he treats us like a kids class. Everyone having fun but your really improving and drilling alot of different things without knowing it. After class we did a lot of conditioning if you wanted to. We did about an hour of conditioning which I will def feel tomorrow but hey if you want to be the best you gotta last. Do conditionng now and improve your mental state now. In real life situation or tourney you will be better prepared

Today spider guard. Today I looked stupid. Haha. Me and spider guard are not that cool with each other. Took me a while to get used to. I'm not very good with my hips for some reason which will enable me unmobile with spider guard.
Rolling I was doing alright I got one sweep but once I had my posture up and tried to pass I was having difficulties breaking grips. Than I rolled with some purple belt and just got worked. So crazy how easy it seems to just do moves. Just makes me happy man just got to put in your time and soon all this craziness will be routine. Also note to self work on my triangle defense cause I was gettting triangled all day. :/ also first tourney is coming up and I'm out of shape. Oh well in 2-3 weeks I'll be able to go into the advance and hopefully I'll be rolling 6-7x a week instead 2-3x. Tourney is on April 5th. Also THINKING of doing the NY OPEN depends on how I do at this local tourney.

Rolling did good. I'm getting better at posturing up only thing that I get caught is my ankles always get grabbed for some some reason. If I have my legs to far back my body is leaned and I could get trianlgled legs too far in front I get swept there has to be a median. I'll find out...

3rd day straight of BJJ feeling great. I need to get my wind up.
Today we worked on spider guard again. We worked on a sweep which I had trouble trying to get it's grabbing one of the hands and rolling on your should while extending your leg thats on the bicep and you wind up in side control.

I did a lot of rolling today 10 days out till the comp. Kind of nervous my endurance isn't where I would like it to be. 5 minute matches. Hopefully if I go all the way that's 3-4 matches. 221-Ultimate division white belt doubt they have many people. Today i worked alot of takedowns feeling okay with those. Tomorrow morning I'll most likely do anonther open mat session and saturday will do anonther beginner class and Sunday maybe anonther open mat/cardio session. That's the tentative schedule alot of work at school too :(. I can't wait till summer.

Also order reuped on some supps today.

The competition I did back in January was 195 and up, unlimited and there was only 7 guys in the White Belt division. Granted that was down here in DC, so I don't know how that will correlate with your area, but I would think you would have at least a few guys to face.

Nice order too. Everytime I order I search Free Sample and get every one that is available, there are usually 10 - 12 different ones I load up on.

Rolling did good. I'm getting better at posturing up only thing that I get caught is my ankles always get grabbed for some some reason. If I have my legs to far back my body is leaned and I could get trianlgled legs too far in front I get swept there has to be a median. I'll find out...

Guard is a hard positions to get moving, think about it, its less dominate then mount or side control but it has as many if not more subs you can throw from it, so its tricker to land these subs from a less dominate positions but the openings are there with enough practice, at my school i have yet to tap anyone from the guard (though everyone has been training longer then me) but when i roll with my friends who train in mission or weslaco i tap them from the bottom all the time, arm bars and chokes, but even that is a recent development, for the first 4-5 months i was just sweeping people or holding them in my guard till they finally could figure out how to pass, now im on the attack from the guard and its hard to get a moment to pass, especially standing pass.

Open Mat 1 hour

Did alright today just did alot of work on the bottom trying to hip escape and setup better positions for myself. Also learned some triangle defense since I always leave one hand in. Also learned an inverted arm bar from a fail arm bar attempt because I seem to lose the arm that I want to trap. Just go for the arm bar if I lose the arm then pretend like I'm going for the triangle then invert armbar the hand left in. Really cool and would never think of it.

remember triceps and wrist is a great control if you are free to go 2 on 1 with the hand and if your attentions are split i like to wrap their wrist in the crook of my elbow and keep my arm pinned to my chest keeping there arm trapped between me and my elbow crook. its good to have a go to when it gets to failing though i like to transition back to a triangle off of a failed arm bar or if they totally pulled out rather then stacked forward ill go for the flower sweep or if they stood all the way up a hand stand sweep or roll for the knee bar.

So I won my first match and loss in the finals. I need work on my conditioning because once that goes so does my technique. Also wish I had gone to the absolute but I didn't know they had one for white belts. Maybe next time. Well now back to the drawing board. My competition cherry is broken and now just trying work get better face more people, learn more and get some mofo gold on my neck.

I hope to compete on the 18th if my coach thinks its a good idea.

First I won in points. I got like two for take down. 4 for rear mount and a few more I didn't even know I won till it was over. I was so confused. I just stayed busied he swept me once and had a submission attempt but I also had a submission attempt

What's good. Today in class we worked on sidecontrol. We learned this pretty cool choke don't know the name of it but your in side control left hand checking the opp hip right hand on the other side of the body. You walk up and with your left hand you grab inside the collar. Your knee should be checking the hip now and now with your right feed the other half of the opp colar. Sprawl out drop hips and enough pressure will be applied for the tap. Counter to this would be to shrimp out get space for your knee to come across if you can trap the arm you have a nice arm bar. Also the choker can go for knee on belly and go on mount to advance his position.

Today I got my 3rd stripe on my white belt and my shoulder is really hurting. I don't know if it was today rolling or if it was from saturday when I got americana'd but my shoulder is tweeked. I might take off tomorrow from BJJ I got a ton of hw to do too. Play it by ear but most likely will take the day off and just relax hw and recover. Also since I"m now a 3rd stripe I can upgrade to unlimited and this summer it doesn't look like I'm taking summer classes for school and I can't find an internship in this economy sooooo. Today worked on collar chokes from a failed shot in attempt. I need to work on applying more pressure with my chest and having a better sprawl to stay heavy. Also my spin is good but I have a hard time trying to get the hooks in. All in all it was a good day felt decent after a long layoff. I just can't wait till school over to train fulltime.

sounds like your doing good my friend. don't forget if they have good posture that is hard to break you can sit up into them with a sit up guard and make an assault from there, both BJ penn and Royler Gracie's books talk about sitting up in your guard to get on the assault some times. I like to play a real tight double under hooked guard focusing mostly on sweeps it works really well for me, maybe because of my long legs.

My coach was working with me on using my chest better too. Not so much on the sprawl but once I get to Half Guard or Side Control. Since I have focused on that it definitely helps my control. Even on guys closer to my size as well.

Felt good to get back into the gym. Haven't been in like two weeks. We worked on the De La Hiva guard. It was weird for some reason I've been thinking about that guard a lot over my time off and it was only right that was the guard we worked on. I don't know if it's my technique or it's just the guard itself. HOLY LEGLOCKS. When I was rolling with a somewhat new guy from a different gym and homeboy just put the legs locks on me which he couldn't really finish I just kept rolling around and would just take his back on wind up in side control but I felt i was very open to Leg Locks. Also I feel really humbled I rolled with a purple belt that I never rolled with. For the first time I truly understood what it meant to be in survival mood. I've gotten over my phase when I have to win the roll. My only goals in rolling is to get into better positions, practice the technique we worked in class (which 99% never works) but man when I rolled with him. I just felt like everything I was doing was in slow motion and I couldn't defend myself at all. It's crazy just makes me want to get better and to be on that level when you can pretty much go for whatever you want or put yourself in bad positions on purpose and get out of it. CRAZY!!!

Note to self.
I need to buy a new gi cause I'm going start doing jiu jitsui everyday after Meomorial Day. Also need cop some new kneee pads and a cup.

Rolling with Purples and Blacks definitely put you in your place. I swear when I roll with coach I am using perfect technique and BAM I am in something I never saw coming and scrambling to get out. I am happy that I am getting to where I think at least one move ahead, but against guys that are way more experienced they are 5 steps ahead they will shut you down if they want to. It just needs to be motivation to keep learning and improving.

This week we are doing open guard pass.
Yesterday I broke my no gi cherry and that was really tiring. Actually might compete in two weeks which means I need to start getting on the treadmill. Then today we worked alot of tight open guard pass keeping the opponent legs close to their body so it's easier to pass. really

DONJUANPIMPIN

Worked on 3 half guard passes.

First in half guard you apply shoulder pressure to force the person to look the opposite direction then you will sprawl out and walk toward the head to get your knee out than you will use your other leg as a hook to free the leg trapped so you can escape to a mount.

We pretty much built and did 3 variations of what is stated above. Rolled 3x. Cardio felt decent getting used to using the mouthpiece and breathing better. Rolled with a blue belt and I'm realizing on the bottom when he was in my half guard I'm stalling waiting for him to do something which is now that I think about it is dumb because I should have just kept busy and atleast elbow escape. I missed last week class on escapes and sweeps for half guard so I rolling today I felt really lost. Also that is like my main weaknesses too. BOTTOM sigh I digress.

After class I went to the track. Untimed ran a 1mile. I really need to buckle down and get serious this summer. I'm starting to become very patchy with training. I want to train consistently atleast sessions a week. Also I have a competition on Saturday don't know if I'm going do it. It's No-Gi. Only trained No-Gi once and don't want to embarrass myself but I could use the experience and it's not too far from where I lived but I'll see how I feel on Thursday which is the deadline

Today we worked on having your back take and defending. Your partner would take your back hooks in and would attempt the rear naked choke. When he attempts to sink his hand under your neak you grab two on one and explode up and try to get your back to the mat.

Rolling I felt very good cardio wise. I need to find ways to succesfully go from back mount to regular mount. When I take out one hook and replace it with my other leg so that I'm now in a mount or a giftwrap.

I've decided not to do that tournament because I didnt request off for work in time. There should be a whole bunch of tourneys in the summer and some big ones to train for in the fall. Pan Ams No Gi Anyone. Also tomorrow I'm going call this boxing gym I have the strong urge to punch to supplement my jiu jitsui. Donjuanpimpin punching and rolling.

Once shown that RNC defense it is actually very easy to do. I use to freak out a bit when I would get my back taken but once I was shown that it is no big deal. Once you get two on one wrist control, most the time I do it with just one, you just lean to the side and let your weight take you to the mat and roll into them. I have even pulled this escape off against my coach more times than not. I have given back from being mounted to do that escape to get to guard. It is a long, and somewhat risky, work around, but I'll take it.

Today we worked on turtle position. I worked with some new guys but they did have a little bit of grappling background. It was good to work with the new guys because it gave me a chance to think a little and help reiterate the technique that we were learning which is good. First we worked on being in turtle off a failed show and your opponnet sprawled on top of you working to get to your back and while there making that transition you go back into guard using your legs to catch them while there transition. We also worked on when your opponnet does have your back on how to roll back into guard and if your opponnet apply to much pressure how you can wind up in perfect position to apply a triangle.

Open Mat and Rolling

Pretty much just let the guys work technique I tried not to go too hard and let them build some confidence and the feel for it. After class I did open mat rolling with a blue belt who I'm pretty cool with haven't rolled with him in a while since he was a white belt but he was always pretty good. We had a very good roll but I got caught in a keylock and in a damn armbar when I was escaping a triangle attempt. I felt good conditioning wise and I'm getting better from the bottom. He said my top game was very good. I feel my game coming together a little bit but it will never be truely better.

Goals for the next week
Attend atleast 2 more BJJ classes this week
Check out this boxing gym
Read Infinite Intensity and create a program
Read Grapplers Nutrtion again and get to grocery shopping
Watch some BJJ videos I got a TONS! :) :)

Workout Gi BJJ Beginner Class
So today we worked on turtle position again. I really like turtle position because I never like pulling guard because I'm horrible on my back and I'm a better top person so we can't take everyone down. So off a failed shot attempt with your opponnet sprawled out we worked on working the duck under. Also we learned two chokes. Anaconda with gi and without gi which is cool cause I really like the Anaconda and want to try and work it more into my game.
Gi BJJ Adavanced Class
Decided I had enough wind to stay for the advanced class. Worked on turtle again but some different move. We worked on getting side control when you opponent in the turtle position. I forgot the name of it I think it might have been a 1/4 roll something along the lines. Either you stand up and grab your opponents collar and belt with your foot on their knee to stop them from widening their knees and you snap them down toward you into side control. Also when your opponent is in turle and you have one leg on the side and one leg in the back we worked on a manuever that allows you to put your opponnet in a crucifix so you can do triangles, armbars and chokes from that particularly setup.
Open Mat and Rolling
Felt good rolling. I'm getting to the point where I'm not that tired rolling. I'm still tired don't get me wrong but it's not to the point where I'm gasping for air which I was in my earlier months. I got a scissor sweep today and got tapped all over the place by this blue belt I never rolled with. It was cool. Just got to get back into my groove and I'll be back to keeping those guys busy.

Today we worked on halfguard in both classes. Yet again I went to the Fundamentals class and the advance class afterwards. After warming up we worked on some one coming up from behind you standing up that has you back. We worked on lower our level creating space and putting on of our legs back behind the opponent and did a throw. On the guard we worked in half guard trying to get small and be able to wrap our arms around the leg and coming to the side for a sweep. In the advance class we also worked on pulling half guard which was good.
Rolling I didn't hit any subs which I haven't hit any in a while but it's okay. I've been getting better at reestablishing guard which I felt was a major weaknesses of mine and pretty much just need to get focus keep working hard. I think I'm going do NAGA in august so my goal is be in the best shape of my life and hopefully not be in the superheavy weight division. Right now my weight is 239

Keep dat half guard work at the front of your mind dude, i spent like a month pulling half guard, taking dumb chances on top to allow the sweep if it didnt work, and just really worked on my sweeping game from 1/2 guard, there is sooooooo many ways to get to someones back from 1/2 guard and if they are all resisted u can always still sweep em, great possition for strait jitz imo. u are always one shrimp a way from regaining it, and if u can use it well people will be just as afraid of getting caught in ur 1/2 as in your full guard.
