I'm looking to get into the field and am working on getting certified now... i figure i won't make too much money just workign at any old gym.. youve got to hustle with this i guess. i plan on doing it in either nyc or la and just trying to make money off of doing a private training sesh's with clients.. how important is your overall appearance/being in great shape? does it definately help with getting new clients and such/ any personalexperience? trying to get in better shape now.

defo helps, if u went to a pt and he was overweight, beard, scruffy, smelt and had greasy hair would u pick him to train u? i doubt it.
as long as u look in shape, and have a good overall apperance then it doesnt really matter. if u look in shape the client is going to think he knows what hes doing and he aslo practices what he preaches.

Important definitely, but probably not as important as networking and having an established client base. The PTs that make the most money, from what I can gather, (not a PT yet) have been doing it long enough that they don't take new clients because they have established themselves.

You don't have to be in great shape. As long as you look like you work out. Just be clean and well groomed.

Would you take your car to a mechanic whos own car was broken down? Or go see a doctor who is always sick? Probably not. If you look the part, then people already "know" that you know what your talking about.

For male trainers~ You can be fairly successful being clean, well-groomed and in reasonably good shape. I think peoples expectations for female trainers are a bit higher though...just from my experience.

Appearance is very helpful. People who want you to train them usually say "I want to look like you" or "I want to look like her". They won't say this if you're out of shape!
Having a great physique is marketing tool in itself. It will generate interest from onlookers and help get a few clients as well. The being groomed part is definitely a must.

As a gym client I always look for the trainer/employee who looks closest to my goals. If I want a BB look, I get a trainer who looks like a BBer & knows his stuff. I'm currently using a trainer who is a big guy & see the dedication needed to get big.
