What is the objective, to clinch, takedown or just get inside to strike?

bob and weave tyson style.

yup.

Or threaten with takedown to engage with strikes or switch it around. I am not afraid of the clinch so getting to close isn't an issue for me.

Also depends who is pushing foward.

I remember when Naseem Hamed would fight he'd be up against opponents pretty taller than him. He'd hang on the outside using his reflexes to dodge the punches and then he'd literally jump foward, almost springing, with a big punch.

It was teh awesome.

Curious.

take him too the ground. You're probably close to the same height on the ground lulz. Or you just get in close or clinch it up.

It really depends on the person.

A taller heavier guy is going to react different than a guy that is a lot lighter.

The heavier guy isn't going to move a lot so coming in from the outside with fakes, or coming at him forward dodging anything he throws and land some money shots.

The faster guy is a little bit more difficult, if you are up to it, eat a couple just to get closer.

Of course this all works for me, you maybe a little different.

My training partner is a lot taller than me (6'2) and has a lanky reach. To come in, I bob & weave, sometimes lead to the body, but I like coming in behind double and triple jabs or jab+lead hook and overhand rights.

We haven't done much kickboxing together, but in MT classes I used to like to start with leg kicks or jabs and finish combos with knees and OH rights or inside hooks.

If your a stocky guy you can toss them around. You have to beat them with power and aggression.

working on footwork would be a start

you would have to negate his reach by coming at him from lots of different angles and with some decent faints getting him off balance and scoring on the inside

Ask Fedor what he did against Hong Man Choi.

Go for a takedown and end up on your back, and then get an armbar?

Slip punches, learn to parray, you also beat lanky people to the punch so counters work awesome.

Footwork is the key. It doesn't have to be fast or fancy, you just need a plan which you can stick to.

What I do, is throw a lot of big right hands early on. They don't have to do any damage, but they've got to scare your opponent. I try and make him think I'm the type of fighter who's got a big right hand, and that's about it. Hit his guard and make them obvious.

He'll start to circle to my left if I'm sucessful, doing everything he can do stay away from the big wild rights. Doing this has just made his footwork 100% more predictable. I've got slow feet but that doesn't matter if I can outsmart him.

Once I've got him scared of the right, if he's still too far away or his footwork is still more effective than mine, then I try and stop him circling to the left. I'll keep throwing the rights, but every now and again throw in a big left hook (my ACTUAL best punch, the rights are just for show).

If I've got him scared of the right enough, the left will be relatively easy to land. If I can get him scared of the left as well..... the only route he can go is backwards into the ropes. Once I've limited his movement, that's most of the problem sorted.
