Go easy on me fellas :)
I'm pretty proud of this as I tore my pec 10 months ago and had surgery to reattach it 9.5 months ago. I just started deadlifting again about a month ago (but have been squatting and doing glut-ham raises for much longer)

thanks, trying to work on keeping my butt down a little more as I'm a very hamstring dominant puller. But it's gotten much better I think

Yeah, on a serious note, your form is pretty damn good. I have to keep my ass loads lower than that, or try to because my back just wouldn't stay straight enough at that height.

thanks guys, obviously I'm really focussed on not re-injuring myself so if my form sucks feel free to tell me!

not really, the thing that hurt the most was knowing I might not be able to lift for a long time.

It looks fine enough to me. And believe me, you'd have been told by now by at least 3 people if it wasn't good, lol.

thanks! I've been thinking of doing a powerlifting competition, so maybe i'll give it more thought (just dead and squat , no bench)

form is great, i wouldn't change where your ass is at. honestly i thought it was a too low at first and that it was going to come back up before the bar left the ground but it didn't

unfortunately if you want to squat in a meet you have to take at least a token bench.
the bar+collars at the very least.

Probably have to do deadlift only. I haven't seen anything where you can just go dead and squat. Unless you are at a very serious meet you shouldn't have any trouble at all getting wins at raw 220.

i've done 475 for 5 raw, so probably over 520 i'd guess. My calculated max is at like 540, but i don't put a whole lot of stock in those calculators

My first meet next month is single lifts - theres bench squat and dead, but no overall, and you dont have to enter all three (although I am)

Looks like you have something of a high waist and slightly long arms, so you are always going to pull with your hips a little higher than someone with a more proportionate build. (yours does not appear to be extreme, like mine).
Very solid technique.

thanks, pec is doing well. been training chest again for about 6 months. Started with 3 lb dumbbell presses. Last week I did 55 lb dumbbells for 3 sets of 20, so I'm getting there!

Oh an BTW, do you have any pics of your pecs pre and post op? How is the muscle attachment looking now? Are you feeling confident that it will fully heal?
str8flexed
01-07-2009, 12:43 PM
it looks slightly different, really can't tell in pics, moreso in just the way the muscle flexes. But i don't think it's anything that will affect my placings in the future

If you do a minumum of 3 mad layne norton stomps before the set and scream glutamine during the reps IM sure youd be able to hit that weight for a solid 8 reps.

just curious you pulled sumo for a 1rm of 615 pre injury but pulled 585 for a triple conventional. What stance do you plan on using if you compete?

Is there a reason for deadlifting in olympic lifting shoes, I would think it would make it harder.

Powerlifting meets are awesome Layne, but make sure you set up a good program to train for it, and being able to peak well you would be able to lift a lot more than you imagined.
i've done 475 for 5 raw, so probably over 520 i'd guess. My calculated max is at like 540, but i don't put a whole lot of stock in those calculators
The calculators are alright, but I use this site to go by, http://www.criticalbench.com/weight-training-chart.htm, and its almost exact with everything I have done when I maxed out, maybe by 5-10 lbs TOPS or sometimes hits dead on, but they never work well with deadlifts from what ive noticed as its a very different lifting movement compared to others. The calculators on BB.com cheat our asses for sure.

This is going to sound so cliche, but you have been a big inspiration to me for a long time. Oddly enough, it is largely because of your academic pursuits that I hold you in such high regard, as its refreshing to see guys like you excel in such dichotomous disciplines(Which you have reconciled through your research :) )
Also, it's so awesome to see that aesthetics and strength need not be mutually exclusive goals.
Congrats on the triple.

Have to agree here...It is very impressive/inspirational that Layne is able to balance training, academics, his PT business, and a cutie new wife without seeming to give less than 100% to any of them.
Not to mention coming back from this injury with a vengeance and nailing this lift. Nice work Layne.

well tonight I had a pretty good night.
I did 495 on squats
first set for 3
then a double
then a tried a set without my headphones and got another double, I think I had 3 in me but I didn't want to go too crazy. I was pretty happy with that as it was somewhat uncomfortable for me as I was trying out new knee wraps (black mambas). I know everyone says they are more soft than most others, but honestly I'm used to just knee sleeves and man those things were TIGHT and they were really stiff for me. I think I'll do better as I get used to them.
Then I decided to try overhand hook grip since I have become increasingly concerned by all the stories i've been hearing about people tearing their biceps, the sets were
225 X 5
315 X 5
365 X 3
405 X 3
455 X 1
495 X 1
545 X 1 (chalk)
585 X 1 (chalk)
I was really happy with it for my first time I ever used it. It was awkward at first but really not that painful and it didn't hurt my pulling at all. I could have done more on 585 but I just wanted to test my grip with it. I don't think it will be a problem and I think as I get used to it I'll be easily able to pull with it in competition. I was really happy with it, especially doing it AFTER squatting heavy

Let's just hope you don't find any horror stories of dislocated thumbs from hook grip :P Solid, Solid lifting, do you plan on ever benching again or did this whole experience turn you off for good?

nice squatting
alot of people that use hook grip use straps for all their training, because using hook grip for all your sets would tear your thumbs off, somethin to think about... Id just use switch grip for your lighter sets, and straps for you heavy sets with double overhand, then hook for 1 or 2 rep maxes etc.
