I finished the part of Hellboy II The Golden Army I fell asleep on last night; I can hit only so many internet sites that don't give me This Site Has Been Blocked By SurfWatch; I could just stick pins in my eyes for something fun and different. My phone range once today, no one else's did, and I'm not even sure there IS anyone else in my area. I should have brought my electric guitar, currently-working-on sheets, headphones and mini-amp. At 4pm I am going into the locker room to get changed for my gym workout (at my regular gym, the equipment here isn't that great), and I am out the door faster than **** goes through a goose!

I can relate, man! I'm the only one from my team at the office today, and there's been no progress made on the software since I left the office Dec. 23rd. I've been posting here all day whiling the hours until I can leave.

Be careful what you wish for. Someone might give you a ton of work to do and then all you plans go out the window. lol
My entire building is out today except for my department.
I stopped to get breakfast tacos and the local diner was even closed!!!!

I'm whiling away my time home sick - hence the number of posts I've put on here today. It's sunny outside for the first time in days. But being home, sick or not, pissed about being sick or not, reminds me of the old adage: I'd rather my worst day fishing than my best day at work...

Nah, there's no one here... not my boss, not his boss, no warehouse supervisors... no nobody. There is only the telecom mgr.; the senior desktop support tech and one tech. And me... AS/400 the sys admin.

I'm just really careful about jinxing myself. I remeber one Christmas Eve that there was absolutely nothing going on all night. Then like 15 mins before it was time to go in all hell broke loose and got stuck for an extra 2 hours.

You don't install anything, it is just a proxy server. You can load many blocked sites by running it through that web page making it appear to your filter to be another site...

Actually we don't use any of those, just what comes native with i5OS (as the o/s is called now). And some third party... Help/Systems, Vision Solutions (mirroring), MKS, etc.

It's an *** strategic offering. Partitions can support AIX, Linux, Windows, and possibly z/OS in the future. These systems have gotten absolutely mainframe size.

I remember AS/400 back in the day ...
Dull as dirt here today too. Wish I wouldn't have come in. Every time I look at the clock I am stunned that so little time has passed. Kind of a depressing day, really.
We should think of a game to keep ourselves entertained ...

What's the UI like now? Back when I was supporting it, it was all line entry on an amber screen

You can still use "greenscreen", but *** is pushing gui with iSeries Navigator.

AS/400's are rock solid for what they were meant for. I actually miss them. Greenscreen was ugly as hell, but at least it ran and ran and ran. I loved how you could partition it based on your needs. One friggen Windows update wouldn't bring the system to its knees. ;)
Now with VMWare, things seem to be going back to centralized processing power with the luxury of distributed processing power if needed.
Ahh how the industry cycles...

heh ... I hadn't thought about it, but that's true. I'm working on a virtual machine right now, actually ... pretty cool stuff.

Bored here too. About to hit the gym early and get that done. It's like a ghost town and of course we are working on ending the year so most of the programs are locked out....go figure.

I thought it was going to be a slow day
but got there and the backup exec server of the course management system (blackboard)
lost connectivity to the powervault, so it missed the backups. had to get that going.
right before I got there from the gym one of the drives on one of the exchange servers started erroring, so I had to rebuild the raid 5 array on it.
A customer requested a temporary internet connection form us while AT&T performed maintenance on their Ds3, so I had to extend Vlans accross the dot1q trunks Cisco switches to them and carve out address space from one of our class C's.
I got a complaint from management about a certain bit of annoying spam coming through so I had to update the config on the barraduda's,
and plan for a defrag of our production database files (the largest of which is 170 gigabytes) this weekend.
So enjoy your boredom LOL

true heh heh
but the consoles of today are much more powerful than those of the past.
We are just now getting our feet wet in VMWare, and I am loving it so far. We are looking for any excuse to expand our esx servers. I have one exchange server that I want to ptov (physical to virtual) asap to get it off of some hardware that has an expired maintenance contract.

Chodan, been there, hated it. Glad you got things locked down.
As far as the VMWare. You're gonna LOVE IT!!!!! I left just after we started our migrations. Servers are basically text files and you can spin up a new server on another physical box in a heartbeat. Servers take seconds to reboot. Segmentation is a reality. It's BEAUTIFUL MAN!!! I almost miss it. Almost.... ;)

you must have moved on to management!
I dead that day if it ever comes personally,
unless you changed careers :)
We had some trouble when the installer came extending our dot1Q trunking through the SAN environment to our VM's, but once that hurdle was behind us it got easy.

My reading of standard notation leaves something to be desired, but I can manage. Usually I use tabs and sheets with just the chords and lyrics because they are so commonplace.
I have a mini-amp, a Pocket-Rockit, with headphones. Works great when you want to play privately but aren't near your amp. I have full size headphones also for the amp to play privately. If I bring the axe to work, I'd bring the Pocket-Rockit. The only thing is that these things eat 9V batteries like they were M&Ms.
