Well...Im doing it, Im putting in a pretty real effort in making a very respectable free weight gym in my basement, the unfinished part, cinder block walls..concrete floor...heater :D One little window....well, here we go.
Step One - Find a Spot
Here is the space, its about 100sqft, 70 of which are pretty well shaped, the other 30..well, I'll find a use for it. Its not large, but larger than it looks in these pics

Ski, you need some weights?
I've got some plates and DBs that are all yours that are left over from your days at SJU.

Step Two : Prep the Area - this post comprises about 3 hours of work
My basement is 80% below grade, but its bone dry, like 100%. Neighbors have finished their basements and gone right over their sump pits with flooring, but I wanted to see if I could do something to reduce humidity a touch.
My choice was to use Drylok on the walls around the area the weights will be.
I had to vacuum the area, as well as the walls for any dust / loose concrete, then the drylok was applied. I guessed one can would do it....EPIC FAIL...one can did this:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i224/skigazzi/Picture005.jpg
Ugh...this stuff is like painting with glue...rough glue...I packed up the roller in plastic wrap and decided to go at it again the next day.

1) They make a cool "garage floor sealer / coating", not sure how much it costs but it's awesome and textured. EDIT: It's epoxy roll-on and looks pretty reasonably priced
http://www.floorchips.com/images2/page5l.jpg
2) I highly recommend OLY DB's they saved me a ton of space:

Step 3 - Finish Step 2
Well, my original guess of 1 can of Drylok was so far off, I bought 2 more the next day, and it did the job nicely...after about 3 more hours of work (this stuff is brutal, one FULL ASS roller's worth covers TWO cinder blockes!!! LOL )
, this is how it looks now.
This is as of the current posting day:

Most of them we threw away. I wish I had known you were looking for some weights. We had DBs up to 160 and probably 70+ 45 lb. plates and even more 25 lbs plates.
I think I've got enough 45's for a home gym and at least a few pairs of DBs (heavier).
I also may be able to get you an olympic bar or two depending on what we have left.
Maybe it will be reminiscing for you :p

Both awesome ideas, looked into both, ended up going with a 3/4 inch rubber floor (comes in 4 x 6 sections) and its very firm, so no wobbling on the bench.
And I think Im going with PowerBlocks for DB's, I tried them, liked them, cannot find any real negative on them (just can't drop them like standards) and take up about 4 square feet. Probably the 90lb set. Not cheap, but you can't get 5-90's for anywhere near the price.
Which brings me to step 4..

Step 4 - Order the Sh*t Tomorrow
Thankfully my wife wants this too, so we have dedicated about $2K to the project in total - Drylok included (that part cost me about $75..already over budget).
I'll list everything I order tomorrow (rack / bench / weights / floor)...then as the stuff arrives, and goes in / up I'll update with pics.
Cal, thank you for the offer, but we're gonna start fresh with new set of weights, I don't mind a little rust, but I think the woman would prefer shiny and new (women love shiny things :D )
Any reps have posters to donate??? I need wall art, prefer inspiration and artistic to the T and A approach (perhaps some Gina Alliota or Pauline Nordine though :D), Animal Pak / Old black and white arnold in the gym / henry rollins dressed as superman, stuff like that, so company logos , stickers etc...

Good to hear you love them! They are upgradeable to 130, but for heavier lifts the barbell is my friend...plus Im nursing an ailing shoulder so its gonna be a while until Im back to 100%.

Nah, I don't think so.
We did have a nasty red adjustable bench that I just got rid of and ordered a new bench to replace it.
We also just bought Episcopal Academy and built an entire new weight room over there. New Hammer strength and life fitness equipment. New swimming pool, new wood basketball courts...the works.
James Maguire donated 35 mill for the campus so it's currently named Maguire Campus.
The Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse is also being re done and will be ready for play in fall 09. Michael Hagan (nutri system) donated for it and will be named after him. It will hold 1000 more seats and have a few more media boxes and a locker room named after Jameericle Nelson.

Wish I would have seen this when you started. I would have steered you away from drylock to this:
http://www.behr.com/Behr/home#vgnextoid=0f56771eb42cb110VgnVCM1000006b0910a cRCRD;channel=PROJECT_CENTER;view=17
Also if you decide to do anything with the floor (epoxy coatings...) weather it be Behr or Rustoleum or any other prep is key. Clean and degrease the f*ck out of it and prime it. I just did my new basement with the above Behr product on the foundation walls (looks great) and there one part epoxy floor paint and the floor is FUBAR. Its a ton cleaner were the paint is coming up and the second time around should be much easier. :D

I have Power Blocks at home and they suck teh balls imo. I got big ass hands and it's a tight fit. Also with an enclosed design you can't do some exercises I love like db pullovers, heavy single db overhead tri-extensions ext. I got mine used for cheap but if I had a choice the traditional db's would be my choice.

space is limited for me, so i went with db's, but i already have standard weight, so i stuck with that as opposed to olympic or buying set increments. i bought these handles from ny barbell:

18" handles and it is shown with 100lbs on it. it really depends on how thin your weights are in order to see the capacity. but at least this covers everything up to 107 (the bars weight 7lbs). beyond that you can maybe go with standard increments.

I have a couple old spin lock standard DB's from way back that I have adequate weights for the movements I can't use PB's for, plus I'll also be keeping my gym membership.
Feedback has been awesome in here, helping me with a few loose ends, and Im sure it'll help people who are still in the planning / dreaming stage alot.

they have all different variants, with weight stacks and other bells and whistles, but its essentially a smith without the downfalls of a smith. the bar is supported by two cables (thin) and the cables lock, when your hands release the sensor, otherwise it is like a normal power cage. used it at nysc and it was awesome.

Its discounted at the retail level by 10-20%. Its still not the cheapest option, but when saw it, and gave it a good once over, the quality of it really stood out vs. what is sold at sporting goods stores. I honestly thought I'd go for a cheaper brand, but we both were like lets spend a little more on this one cause it really is that well made.

Get a cage that has hooks for bands if you can. If you know how to weld you can do your own. I been using chains a lot lately and love them. You should look into them. You getting a dl platform? Wasn't sure since you said you had ruberrized flooring. Maybe you can cut away a part and build up some wood the same height as the rubber for footing. You can get some hardwood flooring, stain it, put SPACECLOWN on it, laquer it and always be motivated too. Just some ideas.

Agree with thumbs down on Power Blocks. Not very functional, IMO.

I have 14" and 16" models. Very useful. If you put the spindles on backwards, I can get 6 10lb plates on each side of the 16" for 120+ lbs.
If you go this route, pick up some 25lb plates (for heavy DB shrugs and rows) and some 1.25lbs plates for micro loading and progression.

Whats funny is my wife wanted to see this thread cause I told her I was doing it, and she sat next to me, and it was like I had something to say about everyone in here like you were high school classmates...it was funny.
My basement is constantly flooding like a bitch even with two sump pumps; I wonder if this would still work.... Prob not.\
Yea, prob not, you could try doing the drylok on the walls and a concrete floor sealant. But it sounds like you might need landscaping / exterior drain system / grading done.

Hello Mrs Ski.
seriously man, shop around local papers, garage sales & gyms. I have the power cage
db's 10-80's on a rack
adjustable bench
lat pulldown
blast straps
seated calf raise
plenty of weight
various curl bars
a couple heavy bags
a recumbent bike, stationary bike (also from the y for $35) and the wife's elliptical
not counting the cardio equip, I have less than $1,000 in it. just search for deals. never underestimate the laziness of men & the willingness of their wives to sell the man's equipment. :D serious.

they have all different variants, with weight stacks and other bells and whistles, but its essentially a smith without the downfalls of a smith. the bar is supported by two cables (thin) and the cables lock, when your hands release the sensor, otherwise it is like a normal power cage. used it at nysc and it was awesome.

What kind of floor are you putting in ? the rubber sections ? If so we had those for a while in the garage under our gym equipment and after just a short time, moisture gets trapped under there and stinks ( yuck ) we gave them away and then used epoxy which worked much nicer. Hey that pole you have down there, you can revamp that into a stripper pole :D

Floor wont be glue down, its heavy enough it should be stable. If moisture is an issue, I'll seal the floor with concrete sealant...and yes, I can put the stripper pole where ever you like

space is limited for me, so i went with db's, but i already have standard weight, so i stuck with that as opposed to olympic or buying set increments. i bought these handles from ny barbell:
http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/im-0030w.jpg
http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/im-0030.html
18" handles and it is shown with 100lbs on it. it really depends on how thin your weights are in order to see the capacity. but at least this covers everything up to 107 (the bars weight 7lbs). beyond that you can maybe go with standard increments.
Anybody got a cheap source for the 10 and 5lb plates like those in this picture?

Created a poster using 'despair.com's poster generator (they make parodies of motivational posters, very entertaining site). You can make your own there. I used piknik for photo editing.

Hey bro sorry I'm just catching this but shoot me your addy in a PM and I will be glad to send you a handful of great Animal posters, gratis.

Optical illusion, there's enough room there to store the weights and put them on the bar, not a ton of space, but enough.

Nah, if I said that it was a misnomer (holy big word)...The rack was a better choice for the space. Im getting some extended hooks that they make for it to make it a bit more squat / rack pull friendly, they are in this pic:

Yea, they were able to ship it really fast, and luckily it showed up early on saturday and I had no plans...so bam, instant gym.
If you order from gym source, they'll actually build it for you when they deliver it, but I wanted to put it together in case I ever move, then I'll know how to take it apart.
