Hello...I am new to this site and I am trying to lose at least 20 pounds. What are the best workouts for weight loss? I have been doing weight machines for different parts of the body followed by 30 mins of cardio around 5 days a week and I haven't seen great results. Any other ideas??

The best workout for weight loss is one you can do for 45 min to an hour without stopping. Whether that is a bike, running, walking, or the elliptical.
Also, you can work out until the cows come home, but if you are eating terribly you won't see any results. You need to burn more cals than you eat. If you're not doing this you'll either be maintaining of gaining.

okay scratch that last post. Within 2 weeks your body knows the routine and utilizes less calories to get endurance work done. That is why it's essential to do workouts where your body is like "what the hell?" YOu are basically keeping your body guessing. If you do the same thing over and over again, it knows what's going to happen and uses "A" calories. However, if you do endurance training, like intervals one day, no rest weight lifitng another, sled pulling another, the rowing machine another, and sprints another, it's never going to understand what the hell is going on.
SO, the more you do odd movements/exercises the more calories you will burn, for the fact that in order for your body to keep up it's got to tap into fuel sources.
Now ontop of this is your diet. To keep it simple:
Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper with snack in between. ALl natural foods... eat like a cave man!
fats/carbs eat early where later in the day you eat more protein foods. Any fat or carb eating late makes it difficult to use as fuel or to be burned off.
Good luck!

What worked for me was a Fullbody Routine with high reps, and occasionally throwing in 100's.

A few things:
1) My post was completely valid, thanks.
2) You really think that a BEGINNER is going to spend that much time trying to plan out a different exercise to do every day of the week? Yeah right. At this point, it is more important that she get her body moving and get used to physical activity with some regularity.
3) Varying exercises doesn't at all mean weight will be lost faster.
4) The body can't burn fats/carbs well at night? Um....what? Calories in versus calories out. That's the bottom line.

Unfortunately there is no 'one solution'.
1. A good diet is the best thing for weight loss. ;) And no amount of '20 minute sessions of gym exercise' will make up for a crudy diet.
2. A good WEIGHTS program will help you to maintain/ gain lean mass. This will help you LOOK better when you lose weight.... It will also burn calories (to a variable degree depending on where/ what type of weight training you do), and will also create a positive metabolic/endocrine effect (which also help in weight loss/ energy/ vitality etc etc). For these - for WEIGHT LOSS the MORE MUSCLES you move per session the better... This creates more metabolic effects, and burns more calories... Things that require co-ordination/ stabiliser muscle activation also 'make you work harder' - which, once again, makes your weight loss more effective.... So you might want to consider replacing your 'machine based' training with more 'free weight' movements (get someone to show you technique) - and also doing more 'full body' type sessions rather than 'split body part' sessions...
3. Adding CARDIO will aid in creating a calorie deficit - which is usually needed for females who are not that active during the day (and who want to eat a little more). Thus - it will aid, again, in weight loss. The intensity/ degree of which will determine the extent... Generally speaking - Higher intensity = more calories burnt = more weight loss.... BUT - too much cardio can also have negative effects in that it will increase your hunger (and this is usually to a much greater degree in females than in males) and it will also *sometimes* create endocrine/ metabolic wackiness (seen in females who do LOTS and LOTS of cardio when on VERY low calorie diets)... So there needs to be a balance.

I had 15lbs to take off after some serious lounging action combined with a serious addiction to chocolates and other crap.
I worked my way up to a 45 minute interval running walking on the treadmill everyday, combined with weight training beginning with full body work outs absolutely no crap food of any kind plus absolutely no drinking alcohol EVER.
This does not mean I didn't ever do these thing it just means my intention is to not do them and I had to work hard and have to work hard to not eat or drink crap
I set a goal for myself then made a plan to tackled it.
no matter what cardio or weight training regime your on if you eat crap food you will see either no gain or very little gains in progress.I know this because I was on the crap eating roller coaster for a while.
I had to ask a lot of questions some stupid and others even stupider but I got the help I needed and combined with the will power required plus a F*** of a lot of patience (which was the weakest muscle I had and have to work on) I have been able to reach my goals and even go beyond what I thought I could achieve.
I have had a serious binging purging issue since I was 11 years old. Since getting my diet pretty much on track I haven't had an episode in 3 months and I feel great about myself. I still have along way to go , and I know I can achieve whatever I set my mind to do.
Making the decision to take the fat off didn't just change the way I look it changed my whole out look on my body my life and how I live.
It starts with a decision and then refusing to quit even if you fall or stumble never never quit .
As my mom used to say to me "its all in the attitude baby "
ps. The women on this site have encouraged me in ways they will never truly know. They helped me to understand patience with myself and specifically what crap food is how to correct crappy eating habits and how to eat to achieve my goals.
I am so grateful I mean it I am so so grateful thank you thank you my achievements are also all of yours.

Wow! This was such an inspirational post! I have had serious problems with food (ranging from anorexia to binging) and i really want to get my life on track and have a healthy relationship with food. I am very determined and want to lose about 15-20lbs although weight-loss is not the most important thing for me.
I do find it difficult to stay motivated when i dont see results and once i have a little slip up it normally results in me feeling like i want to quit, but i know how much i want this and how much i want to achieve my goals.
If you have any advice i would be very grateful to hear it! And congratulations on achieving your goals!

How I have went from 248 down to 188 is using the book Burn the fat feed the muscle and doing the stronglift 5X5 workout. I use the dailyplate.com to track my food and the fat, carbs, and protein that I eat everyday.
