I picture something terrible happening and then pretend that if I hit the PR, it won't happen...sounds gay but it fires me up most of the time

when doing a max attempt if i go up 10-20 pounds i will pickup a ten or two and tell myself. this is light as hell i could throw this across the room this weight isn't heavy at all. and kind of psyche yourself out that you know you can do it you just have to do it already and quit stalling.

I just got dumped by my GF of 2 years. So lately, just thinking of that b*tch makes me go insane.

for pr's, i like to add 75-100 lbs. and just unrack it on the bench, makes the pr feel lighter.

Absolutely nothing. Real strength doesn't have to be coaxed out or screamed at. I'm as strong half-asleep at 3am as I am during a training session at 3pm.

I do my heavy triples and maxes during the climax/crescendo of my heavy metal songs.

I wear this necklace when doing more than 405 on any given lift:

I was being vaguely facetious, but mostly it's the truth. I don't get psyched. I just lift.

Doing some rain dance / chest beating before a deadlift will help me lift the weight.

the closest one in the gym

preferably someone on a bike or doing some queer stretching crap

just start smashing their face in with my fists and throwing them around like a rag doll gets me so pumped

Lately, I have been talking about this new PPM mouth guard that improves your athletic performance by up to 20% instantly. I know it sounds weird but it is fully explained via the link below. It is well worth the read.

Probably my annoying tradition is going to the water fountain between every set. I just have too, I don't know why. Guess because I have to waste time between sets and don't know what else to do.

i forgot to mention that i seem to be more agressive with a beard. sometimes i won't shave for a month and half a huge beard and something about having a beard just = strength to me. can anyone else relate? i used to lift with this one dude who introduced me to this and he had like a zz top beard and he said it just made him feel invincible doing deads.

Really could no disagree with you more. PL along with most sports cannot just be done in the passing of the day. Ask Donnie if he could put up 2900 whenever he wanted. It takes days of mental preparation(for his competitions).

Same here. The gym is a my temple. It is when I am at peace. All this anger talk is bull**** - there is enough frustration and problems facing us in real life. Weightlifting is a hobby. Just enjoy it. Granted I do experience anxiety when I know I am about to squat something that could possibly crush me into two, I do not use anger as a tool to get the weight up.

lol, no way I could read in a gym, woulden't recall a word. That reminds me though, I bring my workout log and between sets (And trips to the water fountain) I calculate reps, sets, max's, numbers, ect. Sometimes people ask me if I'm doing homework :), I just like the mathematical analysis of progresion.

I read a book though. I like reading in the gym. I like the peaceful aspect of it. I know this sounds weird but its true.

He didn't say you don't have to be mentally prepared, just that you don't have to go all animal and **** to get psyched up.

Personally, I usually remain calm throughout the whole lifting process. I pace around a lot, but that's jut to keep my head completely clear. I don't get psyched up for rugby matches, either. The less false anger you have, the more you're able to concentrate on the task at hand.

Do a few warm up sets, then put on really heavy weight. Go to the bathroom. Beat off for about a bit till Im pretty damn close, then stop, slap myself in the face, run out of the bathroom pants down with a hardon, and lift the bar. Works awesome. Sometimes I snort some caffiene pills. Well, maybe at home I do that....the first part.....

I usually try to get pissed off or think of something that provokes some kind of trong emotion and then I try to focus on staying as tight as possible durring the lift.

I've seen some crazy stuff over the years when I competed back in the '80s.....guys snorting crystal meth, shooting adrenaline, one 98er use to come out with a 2x4 before squats and beat himself in the head senseless, a 242er use to bang his head on the bar til the blood was running down his face.....
