It was a good Groundhog Day today :) We lucked out in Cincy -- we were supposed to be hit by a worse storm that what we had last week. However, it veered east of us. We're getting maybe flurries.
Today was the last day of the first circuit program from Jaime. I start the new one on Wednesday (yoga/cardio tomorrow).
BW PRISONER SQUATS:17, 17, 17
I like this exercise. Because of my hurting knees I can't always go as deep as I like. I go until my knees hurt. Then, I reposition and try to go down again. I'm getting better luck -- but chances are I won't ever be a great squatter. That's okay -- I am already a great dead'er ;)
DB STEP UPS:15, 15, 15
With 20 lbs dumbells.
FULL PUSHUP:3, 1, 1
Died quickly on these :o But -- my nose was to the ground, so I'm not too disappointed.
BW BACK LUNGES:12, 12, 12
I keep my balance pretty good on regular lunges. It's still a struggle with the Bulgarians (which are in my new program too) :eek:
SQUAT THRUSTS:10, 10, 10
These are like a half-burpee. I think burpees include a pushup.
CARDIO:Treadmill
LISS -- 10 min @ 3mph pre; 20 min @ 3.5 mph post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eats:
#1: Sludge shake w/strawberries
#2: 5 oz chicken, 1/2 cup brussels sprouts, 2 tbsp salsa, 12 almonds
#3: 1.75 sc whey in water, 1/2 grapefruit, 12 almonds
#4: 5 oz chicken, 1/2 cup aspharagus, 2 tbsp salsa, 12 almonds
#5: Sludge shake w/blueberries
#6: TBE -- peel & eat shrimp. Yummy! :D
well, I am eating about 2000 per day at the moment...that is total cals...so don't feel so bad :)
I was doing 2200-2400 per day and lost a boatload of weight with those cals. But with the decreased activity with the arm injury....I could only maintain at that weight...and I wanted to cut a little more fat until I get cleared to lift heavy again.
Yeah, 2000 is getting pretty low for a guy. But since you're recovering from injury it's working for you.
I feel better at the 1900-2000 cal range, but I just maintain, no matter how much I exercise.
Diet is 80-85% of your results ... so it is definitely the most important part of the equation.
I have been guilty of skipping meals in the past, which is not good. Your growing muscles need the calories! :)
I'd say brussels sprouts are CHA friendly. High in fiber, high in nutrients, and a fairly low carb vegetable. The only problem with them I have is they give me horrid gas! :o
I'm not discouraged by the pushups. I am actually pleased with them ... I got 3 reps in the first set. They died off quickly, lol ... but then again I remember when I could not do one for the life of me. And they were nose to ground! I have to watch it that my butt does not stick up.
Pushups kill your core, too!
Squat thrusts are part of the burpee movement. You don't do pushups w/squat thrusts, and I don't jump up either at the end of it. They're still pretty hard!
Hahahha, I eat at 10-11 pm on a regular basis :o Largely because I don't get up super early :o
I don't like eating that late either. A couple of people suggested to me that I could combine meals so I won't have to eat as late. You may wish to do the same. In my case I can't combine meals because I have a hard enough time eating the regular amount of food (I have an adjustable gastric band).
Storm, he collects mainly pistols and rifles -- a few original revolvers from 1870-1920, but mostly repro. Some WWII German pistols. He has a ton of rifles. I told him he could outfit a small army, lol.
The gym work is a given, hard as it is. The diet is by far the hardest part of it all, which we all know. And you know, it's not the eating of the clean foods that is hard, it's working around those around us who don't want to eat clean ... and get crabby from us doing it. The longer I work with this the more I admire people who compete, because IT IS HARD.
Snow is a rarity where you live, Diane. It's a pain here unless you don't have to drive. Most people in Cincinnati don't know how to drive in the snow ... which really is a shame since we get it every year, heh.
Wee-eellllll ... there are competitions all over this area, some large, some small. The Northern Kentucky is literally up the street from where I live, but that is a pretty large comp, so I don't know if I'll do that one next year or not. There's smaller comps in Florence, KY, which is about 20 minutes from where I live, or even the comp that Hoos is in this year (Natural Indiana). Of course, that's a good way from my place of habitation ;) There are others all over Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana.
Day 1 of Jaime's new plan! Alot of fun stuff :)
PRISONER SQUAT: 15, 15, 15
This is a carry over from the last program. Great exercise -- and I am finding out, from doing all these BW squats -- that my knee flexibility is slowly getting better :)
JUMPING JACKS: 40, 40, 40
Another carryover. Not as many reps as in the former plan, but still a ****load of them :D
PLANK: 45s, 45s, 45s
The last set of 45 seconds left me shaking, lol. I am alot stronger with these than I was in the past. Before, I could barely hold a plank for 15 seconds. These were from pushup position.
STABILITY BALL LEG CURL: 15, 15, 15
More carryover torture, lol ;)
INCLINE PUSHUP: 8/4, 8/4, 6/6
More pushup fun. I did these on a press bench.
SIDE PLANK: 10s, 20s, 20s each side:eek:
I started from the left side because it's so much weaker than my right -- somehow I gained strength for the last 2 sets. I could hold for just 10 seconds on my left side the first set. This is hard and really works your core!
DB SUMO SQUAT: 15x15, 20x15, 25x15
I went light tonight to find what weight DB would suit me. All were light ... I will have to start with a 30 lb'er next time I do these.
INVERTED ROW: 8, 8, 8:o
I could not do one rep full body on these, so I had to do it from my butt upward. It was actually easy that way -- I will have to keep on trying to do reps full body on these. I bet this really works your back when done properly!
CARDIO: LISS
10 minutes on the elliptical pre, 20 minutes on the treadmill post. On the treadmill I was getting nauseous and almost stopped at 15 minutes ... but crushed through it and made my time. This workout sneaks up on you! :D
Today is a cardio day ... I would like to try a little of the Tabitha stuff -- Jaime, if you see my post here would 1x8 intervals be cool -- 20 on, 10 off? After that about 30 minutes of LISS? It sounds good to me :)
I'll probably do jumping jacks and step ups, because they are 1)easy to do and 2)yet brutal when you do enough of them ;)
Afterwards, 25 minutes LISS on the treadmill.
Eats:
#1: Sludge w/strawberries, 1/2 cup oatmeal
#2: 2 scoops whey in water, 12 almonds
#3: Roasted chicken breast (yummy!), 1/2 cup green beans (forgot the almonds, lol)
#4: 1 packet tuna, 1/2 cup green beans, 12 almonds
Hey Penney, You use a lingo here I don't understand :confused: What is a tabitha and how do you do it on and off?
Good morning Cynthia! Tabatha is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) cardio -- you take a BW exercise like squats, jumping jacks, step-ups, etc and go at the highest intensity you can for say 20 seconds, then take 10 seconds off (using active rest), then go full intensity again for 20 seconds. I did this for 8 intervals with step ups last night. I am starting w/one exercise, and will ad them as time goes by. It is fun!
Great job on those planks! I can only handle 20 - 25 seconds of them!
Thanks Cynthia! I am pleased with the strength increases in my core.
Good Saturday morning ladies and gents! I got sick to my stomach late yesterday afternoon, which I blame on drinking a Venti Starbucks at about 2 pm :rolleyes: I really need to ditch the afternoon coffee. Sometimes it bothers me, other times it does not. Rick actually quit drinking it a few months ago. Maybe I should do the same??? :o
Workout: 25 minutes LISS on the treadmill. I was intending to work out, but the nausea got to me :( So ... it wound up being a cardio day. Today is workout day. I feel better.
Eats:
#1: Sludge shake w/strawberries, 1/2 cup oatmeal
#2: 5 oz chicken, 1/2 cup green beans, 12 almonds
#3: 1.75 scoops whey in water, 12 almonds
#4: 5 oz chicken, 1 cup green beans, 12 almonds
#5: Sludge shake w/blueberries
I got home really nauseous, so I did not eat a final meal. I did have some potato chips & mixed nuts while watching TV with Rick later after I laid down and felt better -- that is my cheat meal. That's okay because we are staying home this morning and I can fix some eggs and oatmeal for bfast. We plan to go to the steak house later, which has tons of clean items :)
My plans are either filet mignon (which is pricey, but oh so good) or salmon and a side salad -- of course you have to choose 2 sides so I'll get veggies to take home. The salad will be either plain, or the dressing on the side. Sticking a fork in the dressing instead of drowning the salad in it help ;)
I worked at the little gym today :)
STEP-UP: 3x15sx10 each side
I made the step platform alot higher today, hence the smaller DBs. It was about 2.5" below my knees. Very very hard at the end.
BW SIFF SQUATS: 20, 20, 20
This is the first time that I have done these, or even heard of these. Squatting from your tip toes ... very difficult. I used a wide stance for the first 2 sets, then narrowed it for the last one.
OFF-SET PUSHUP (ON KNEES): 8, 8, 8 each side
I will begin to attempt these off my knees in a couple of weeks -- it still is difficult going all 8 reps w/o stopping (although I made it through all 3 sets tonight) :)
SPLIT SQUAT Q/FRONT FOOT ELEVATED: 10, 10, 10 each side
This is the Bulgarian split squat w/my front foot elevated. I started off with just one stepper for now. It actually made it easier for me to keep my balance. I still hate this exercise, lol, but I have noticed my quads pumping up nicely from it ... and I have noticed them getting harder. It'll be real sweet when I can actually see them! haha
PLANK ON BALL: 3x20s
:eek: This is hard. Satan himself invented Swiss balls, lol.
REVERSE LUNGE: 10, 10, 10 each side
I hate lunges too, but they're almost cake compared to Bulgarians :o
WIDE GRIP LAT PULLDOWN: 3x87.5x8
The program calls for assisted chins, but the little gym does not have that equipment. So ... this was the closest to that.
STABILITY BALL ROLLOUT: 10, 10, 10
This is hard, too. I did not roll out very far -- I need to work on that.
STICK-UP: 12, 12, 12
You stand about 6" backed up from the wall, with your butt, shoulders, head, arms & hands touching the wall. You bring your hands up as far as possible above your head, then bring them back down. I have good shoulder mobility, but I still can't completely straighten them out at the top of the movement, especially towards the end of sets. It's harder than it looks!
BIRD DOG: 5, 5, 5 each side
Good balancing exercise.
CARDIO: Treadmill
LISS -- 10 min pre, 25 min post
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Eats:
#1: 1/2 cup Kroger egg whites, 1 lean burger, 1/2 cup oatmeal
#2: Longhorn Steakhouse -- 7 oz. filet mignon, about 1 cup of broccoli. Good meal. I love steak.
#3: Sludge shake w/blueberries
#4: 5 oz chicken squares, 1/2 cup snap peas, 12 almonds, 2 tbsp salsa, 2 tbsp ff sour cream (I mixed the sour cream & salsa together & mixed it in the chicken. Yumm!) :p
#5: Not sure -- either sludge or eggs tonight. I am eating just 5 meals today because meal #2 was pretty large.

I do planks with my feet on the smallest medicine ball I can find. They are brutal for me.

My forearms, Rich, unless Jaime tells me otherwise.
They are 10x more brutal on the ball than by themselves :eek: Swiss balls are evil!

If you want an uber challenge, put your feet under an unstable surface ;) *this is semi dangerous though...*

Those planks are hard. I've never done planks with the ball but in my Pilates we do a bunch of different versions of planks.... total killer for the core!
Awsome workout.

Few things pop out at me, that really put a HUGE smile on my face,
Not only did you eat out, but you kept it clean GOOD JOB HERE PENNEY! you are wise, and you did what you needed to do and thats STICKING TO YOUR DIET!
BIG THUMBS UP THERE
also great workout, the intensity and volume were stepped up, but you came through, dont ever give in, remember its all MIND OVER MATTER. picture your long term goal, that big picture as you continue to feel fatigue and run down, and then think, if i stop now, how much and i setting myself back? how much is this showing that I dont have what it takes to get there?
Dont ever do this and second guess because you are a strong woman on the inside and you have the potential, just keep bringing it, and keep NAILING that diet.

I worked at the little gym today :)
STEP-UP: 3x15sx10 each side
I made the step platform alot higher today, hence the smaller DBs. It was about 2.5" below my knees. Very very hard at the end.
BW SIFF SQUATS: 20, 20, 20
This is the first time that I have done these, or even heard of these. Squatting from your tip toes ... very difficult. I used a wide stance for the first 2 sets, then narrowed it for the last one.
OFF-SET PUSHUP (ON KNEES): 8, 8, 8 each side
I will begin to attempt these off my knees in a couple of weeks -- it still is difficult going all 8 reps w/o stopping (although I made it through all 3 sets tonight) :)
SPLIT SQUAT Q/FRONT FOOT ELEVATED: 10, 10, 10 each side
This is the Bulgarian split squat w/my front foot elevated. I started off with just one stepper for now. It actually made it easier for me to keep my balance. I still hate this exercise, lol, but I have noticed my quads pumping up nicely from it ... and I have noticed them getting harder. It'll be real sweet when I can actually see them! haha
PLANK ON BALL: 3x20s
:eek: This is hard. Satan himself invented Swiss balls, lol.
REVERSE LUNGE: 10, 10, 10 each side
I hate lunges too, but they're almost cake compared to Bulgarians :o
WIDE GRIP LAT PULLDOWN: 3x87.5x8
The program calls for assisted chins, but the little gym does not have that equipment. So ... this was the closest to that.
STABILITY BALL ROLLOUT: 10, 10, 10
This is hard, too. I did not roll out very far -- I need to work on that.
STICK-UP: 12, 12, 12
You stand about 6" backed up from the wall, with your butt, shoulders, head, arms & hands touching the wall. You bring your hands up as far as possible above your head, then bring them back down. I have good shoulder mobility, but I still can't completely straighten them out at the top of the movement, especially towards the end of sets. It's harder than it looks!
BIRD DOG: 5, 5, 5 each side
Good balancing exercise.
CARDIO: Treadmill
LISS -- 10 min pre, 25 min post

Wow Penney, talking to god on the big white telephone then a session like this ;-) EDIT.. So good I quoted it twice, Sorry can't undo it, my bad ;-)
Those steps ups are pretty evil too.
I had an arguement with my chiro about those swiss ball exercises, and core strength, last week. I couldn't see the point and haven't been doing them.
Try this at home. Laid flat on your back, get rick to hold an ankle and move the leg out(sideways against his resistance.
Then, stretch the leg to lengthen it and repeat. The loss of strength was noticable in me, lack of core strength. He reckons I'll improve all my lifts with better core strength ;-)

You are very right, Bob. What's that quote -- genius is 10% inspiration and 90% sweat? Or something like that ... no matter your goals or abilities, the discipline and tenancity to get there is 90% of the battle. Barring severe handicaps, hard work will eventually trump genetics every time.

Wow Penney, talking to god on the big white telephone then a session like this ;-) EDIT.. So good I quoted it twice, Sorry can't undo it, my bad ;-)
Good morning Gary! It took a couple of minutes for me to figure out "talking to God on the big white telephone" ... lol! :o Actually that didn't happen but I was on the verge of it.
Those steps ups are pretty evil too.
Step ups are evil ... especially when you make the platform high. The biggest thing you must remember is to keep your back nice and straight -- no hunching over -- and that gets more and more difficult to do when you tire.
I had an arguement with my chiro about those swiss ball exercises, and core strength, last week. I couldn't see the point and haven't been doing them.

I used to make fun of the Swiss balls, Gary. No more, lol. They are little circular torture devices!!!! :eek: Satan's favorite invention (next to Bulgarian Split Squats!)

You use the smaller medicine ball instead of the Swiss ball, right? It would be hard like that, too. I think that's called the Reverse ball plank.

Don't I know it!!! :o **sigh** But ... working out on a regular basis for 2.5 years has really firmed my upper arms up -- I am suprised how much -- even though I'm up about 18-20 lbs from my low last year my arms are less flabby. Of course, I've a way to go before I am near my goal, but there has been positive changes regardless.

I will wind up having 5 meals today, because we were out alot. It was an off day from the gym anyway.
#1: Sludge shake w/blueberries & strawberries, 1/2 cup oatmeal
#2: Long John Silvers baked salmon & veggie medley. I had the salmon because it's more satisfying than the tiapala.
#3: Sludge shake w/blueberries
#4: 1 bowl of Dixie chili w/beans. Boy, I was REALLY tempted to order a 3-way --- heh the desire to be lean won out:D I passed on the crackers, too.
#5: TBE -- probably eggs tonight.
Tomorrow is workout day, Tuesday cardio! Tabata w/the 25 minutes of LISS afterwards. I think I will do it with jumping jacks this time. I can't wait to get my timer. It can get tough counting seconds when you're winded -- and real easy to "cheat" the time -- that is, counting the workout seconds faster than the rest seconds! :p This will keep me HONEST.

Shoulders = 41" (-1)

I have tons of faith in Jaime. I just hope that I can continue to stick to the diet. If I don't stick to the diet I'm screwed. I did lose inches, but I still don't want that "2" weight.
The program that I am on is the best possible for fat loss. I have got to continue sticking to the diet and not giving in. I have been good at that this week. It will have to continue for months and months and months months months. Gawd, so long! I want to continue seeing losses every week for now on. It's so slow (my damn metabolism and my age!!!!) that if I don't see at least a 1lb loss every week I won't make my goal for next year.
Heh, I told myself that I was going to have fun with this. So, let's have fun and continue to stick to the diet, Penney (yes I'm talking to myself). :)

that is understandable.....I remember when I was VERY heavy that there would be several weeks that I didn't lose a pound, but then suddenly I'd start losing like a pound a day for several days. It's not a perfect science, and we just need to push forward knowing that if we do everything right results will follow.

Part of your quote that caught my eye was "just a few days of eating like normal people and I'm right back to square one".
Umm...hun, you realize what you just said, don't you?
YOU HAVE THE ANSWER! It's staring you in the face! The solution is right there!!!
You're not normal (in a good way!). You're in PRE-CONTEST PREP MODE!! COME ON NOW!!! Really! Like 1% of people who pick up a weight will ever compete in their lifetimes. And you are part of that 1%. So no more being normal. Eating out (however healthy) needs to be kept to a minimum until the scale starts going in the DOWNWARDS direction consistently...

Are you really preparing for a comp?! Did I miss this? GO FOR THE GOLD lol :D
I actually hate eating out now lol. I'm not doing a competition or anything but I take my fitness and diet EXTREMELY serious. I find eating out a hassel and hate worrying about what the restraunt has to offer, what I'm going to eat and if they actually make the changes that I ask for to the food I order. I much rather make something at home or pack my own food when going out. I ALWAYS carry a cooler of food when travelling.

Weight = 201 (-) Up 1 from last time I updated here, but down 2 from last week **I am not happy about it, but at this stage it's hard to lose more than 3 lbs in one week :mad: Once I stepped on that scale, I knew I would not get what I wanted.
Neck = 14." (-.5)
Shoulders = 41" (-1)
Chest = 41" (-1)
Waist (at narrowest point) = 33" (No Change)
Waist (at belly button) = 38" (No Change)
Hips: 44" (-.5)
Thigh: 23" (-1)
Calf: 16" (+1)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There it is. I really should not be too upset about my weigh-in, because I lost most of the weight that I gained over my excursion. It's just ... I wish it was easier to lose it. I'm working my ass off in the gym and carrying tons of stuff to work every day -- you'd think I'd be rewarded with faster results than this. But -- just a few days of eating like normal people and I'm right back to square one :rolleyes: Gahhhhhh! :mad:
Penney, I know EXACTLY how you feel! But you ARE making progress, great progress. Your numbers are going in the right direction, down. We weigh the same and your hips are 5 inches smaller and your thighs are 5 inches smaller - you've been working out much longer than I have and it shows in your body!! You WILL get to your goal.
It will have to continue for months and months and months months months.
I really understand how you feel!!! :) But we can't think this way. It's just today. All you have to do is eat right TODAY. Tomorrow is another day and you can make another decision tomorrow on how you'll eat then, but TODAY you are going to eat on plan.
that is understandable.....I remember when I was VERY heavy that there would be several weeks that I didn't lose a pound, but then suddenly I'd start losing like a pound a day for several days. It's not a perfect science, and we just need to push forward knowing that if we do everything right results will follow.
Our bodies love to adapt, Rich! You have done great :D
I can relate but me with the "3" weight. We are getting there Penney! Like you just said, have FUN with it. The more you work the better you are going to feel.
Very true, Brian! If you can't have fun with it, what is the point? ;)
You did great! Inches lost = super! The scale can be a hazard to our mental health. Look at the other numbers too
That scale is evil, Jess! :p I did lose inches, which means more muscle. Yay!
Be patient Penney. Great things come with time
Patience is a virtue that I fall short of sometimes :o But, we all do.
Morning Penney!!!
Your numbers are looking good.
I just posted mine with pix.
You look great, Brian! You should be proud :D
Penny,
Your log is very inspirational....keep training hard!! Try not to get discouraged..you are doing great! It took me awhile to read your posts to get up to date, but I think you are doing great!
Thank you Caressa! :)
I understand the frustration, but the scale still went the right direction. You're doing really awesome my friend...you have A LOT to be proud of!
Yeah, I know ... like my friends here :o :D Plus other people in my life who provide love, comfort, challenges and humor.
If measurements are going down, fat is being lost, dont stress the weight the MIRROR is what your looking for. Yes it may not show much every week because you see yourself everyday but remember 1 word
Okay, take a deep breath Penney! You LOST 2lbs last week. The same week that you hit your macronutrients, training and cardio targets.
I call that a fantastic week!
It really was. I was frustrated by that bast ... I mean that scale :p:D heheh!
If it were easy, everyone would do it. You are being rewarded but you have to recognize it. Keep working the program and you will become your goal!
It surely isn't easy ... but then nothing worthwhile is ;)
Fantastic!
Good to hear! :)
I see lot's of negative number. Big woot for the 2lb loss wats week.
Thanks Kevin! I need alot more -2 lb weeks! :o
keep plugging at it Penney.
I do my best to encourage Rick to eat at home. It's tought limiting him to one takeout meal a week (although he eats out all week from work). I will continue to stress eating at home. I can't wait til summer (GRILLING season!).
Yeah ... I decided to go for the gold a few weeks ago :o I have to remind myself that this is FUN!
I actually hate eating out now lol. I'm not doing a competition or anything but I take my fitness and diet EXTREMELY serious. I find eating out a hassel and hate worrying about what the restraunt has to offer, what I'm going to eat and if they actually make the changes that I ask for to the food I order. I much rather make something at home or pack my own food when going out. I ALWAYS carry a cooler of food when travelling.
I'm the same way, Jess. Eating out is a BIG hassle. They always want to drizzle food with butter, etc, which makes it taste good but adds a crapload of calories. Not to mention the breads and other assorted carbs ... :rolleyes:
I prefer my own because I know what's in it! lol
Penney, I know EXACTLY how you feel! But you ARE making progress, great progress. Your numbers are going in the right direction, down. I have tightened up quite a bit over the past 2 years or so. You will, too. I never had prominent hips anyway -- I don't know if you do -- it's my darn BELLY! lol
I really understand how you feel!!! But we can't think this way. It's just today. All you have to do is eat right TODAY. Tomorrow is another day and you can make another decision tomorrow on how you'll eat then, but TODAY you are going to eat on plan.
I'm shooting for Spring 2010, Cynthia. I figured that would give me time to get in shape for it -- as long as I stick to my plan.
MOUNTAIN CLIMBER0,0,0
INVERTED ROW84/ 8/4, 8/4
I tried this directly under the Smith machine and I can do them full-ROM! They're hard, though -- I could not go the whole 12 reps.
INCLINE PUSHUPS8, 8, 8
Hard :eek: (I have never met an easy pushup, lol). Not quite full ROM, but I predict full ROM in the near future ... :D
