Is there a rule of thumb for deciding to take days/weeks off?

For example, I have been following a routine from the bodysculpting bible for women for the past 8 weeks (Sunday/Tues/Thurs) with about an hour of cardio a day (half of which is walking the dogs, other half is either more walking the dogs :P or trying pilates/yoga/elliptical/whatever for variety).

I am starting to do Jillian Michael's 30 day shred and have not done my normal workouts this week, but I still feel kind of sore and tired. Ideally I would like to do the 30 day shred every day and do a shorter strength training workout 3 days a week. Would it be good to just relax other than walking for the rest of the week before starting up again or have I not "earned" it yet? I did, sort of, get a break when I went to dragoncon over labor day but we did so much walking with stairs and hills, that our legs were constantly aching there too so not sure if that exactly counted as a break.

I usually take 1 day a week where all I do is walk the dogs. I don't usually plan rest weeks, they just happen when I get sick, or something comes up or whatever.

It all depends on your body but IMHO, take at least one full 24 hours off a week, your body/muscles do need to rest up a bit :-)
