and Fibromalasia? the bro I train with just was diagnosed with Fibro at 27 years old.....true nightmare. You would never know it, but hes gonna be on pain management for life. I believe its Ultram and Soma....these are opiate deriatives but not opiates nor NSAIDS.

I know NSAID are bad news due to anti inflamatory isssues, but what about the other too? Is this gonna prevent him from building mass ?

There is little evidence due to lack of studies on healthy young men and the effect of such pain medications - however since they are opioids and have the strongest reaction in the brain any actual catabolic effects would more than likely be minimal. I know that opioids can increase the utilization of glucose in the liver, but I would be more concerned with 2 things: 1) not having the "stop you are overdoing it" threshold which can lead to injury and 2) the side effects of opioids like depression, lethargy and things like that.

Again, I am just an avid reader and have no significant background in anything medical.

However, my mother has fibromyalgia and she has been able to successfully manage the pain and tiredness through exercise, and the use of natural herbs to help her sleep.

Sorry I can't give more advice - I guess he should just check with the doc and maybe try to find a more holistic minded MD if he wants to stay away from the drugs.

Hope he is doing well man

Thanks bro......our only concern right now (well his but he's my bro so I told him I'd find out as much as I could) would that the ultram or soma would actually be eating muscle. But since you stated you don't see how it would as long as his training and diet are on point, then really the only concern is his health...
