Three uniform spheres are located at the corners of an equilateral triangle. Each side of the triangle has a length of 1.48 m. Two of the spheres have a mass of 2.18 kg each. The third sphere (mass unknown) is released from rest. Considering only the gravitational forces that the spheres exert on each other, what is the magnitude of the initial acceleration of the third sphere?

Using the correct formula:
F = \frac{GMm}{d^2}
and equate with newtons law (F =ma )
ma = \frac{GMm}{d^2}
The masses of the unknown sphere (m) will cancel giving:
a = \frac{GM}{d^2}
Remember this is the only the acceleration of one sphere. As you say you will then consider the vectors (draw a diagram). You can double the force, but you will first have to find the centre of mass of the two known balls, then assume the force acts from that point.

Hope this helps ;)

And I probably should have added: If you find the centre of mass of the two spheres of known mass, it will be the mid point between the two masses. You can then consider the two masses as a single mass of 2 \times 2.18 = 4.36kg , this is the M, the combined mass of the two spheres. d is then the distance from this point to the unknown mass.

What if the mass of the unknown sphere is so great that the other two sphere's have no effect on it, but it has an effect on them? It may act as a gravity well that will drag both of the other two into it.

What if the unknown sphere is actually a black hole?

No, no, no. You see, the unknown sphere would be your pecker, and the other two would be your balls. Your theory would only be possible if one were to hang upside down like a bat ;)

What if the unknown sphere is actually a black hole?

Well, sort of. This would be your anus, directly below the two spheres :)

The force acts from the center of two balls? Actually the force comes from the rear, the balls are just hanging around.

Hope this helps.

Even the mass of a feather from a ducks back will effect the most massive of blackholes, its just that the degree of influence is so low it is not worth the time to calculate.

Gravity from an object should be from the center of the object. The strength of the field is relative to it's mass. Two sphere's with equal mass, that are allowed to freely align, should attract to each other.

I would be interested to see your source on that information.

Black holes do not even allow light to escape from them. That is until they have decayed to the point tha they have used there energy up.

Stephen hawking had unique theory about black holes, alternate universes, and energy.

My daughter needs help with her homework and I am to busy neglecting her, can you help?

Alec, Brett, and Chris each purchased parts for their skateboards at the sports store. Alec and Brett wanted to build new skateboards, so they each needed to purchase a deck, trucks, bearings, and wheels. Chris needed new wheels only. The store offers a 10% discount for purchases over $250, so the boys decided to pay for all the parts together to qualify for the discount. Altogether, the boys spent$266.40.
The clues below reflect the price of the items before the discount is applied.

* The combined cost of all the bearings for the 2 boys was $1 more than the deck for Alec’s skateboard. * They each bought the same kinds of wheels. Altogether, they spent$75 for the 3 sets of wheels. Each set contained 4 wheels.
* The total cost of the bearings came to $24 less than the total cost of the wheels. * Alec spent$5 more for his deck than Brett spent for his. However, Brett spent $5 more on trucks than Alec. * Brett spent$3 more on bearings than twice the amount Alec spent on bearings.

What was the total amount each spent after the 10% discount?
