5:00 AM cdt Thursday.
My brother and sister and families left Houston last night and are now west of San Antonio. The forecast track has moved north over 200 miles in the last couple of days from Corpus to 30 miles south of Houston. My brother is tuned into the weather- he checks the hurricane sites hourly so I consider him prepared- I'm afraid most in Houston are not and today might be a panic.

Good luck- Gasoline should be a top priority before you get on the road. When the mass evac's set in with Gustav gasoline went quick- guys were filling all sorts of gas tanks for generators and such. Which direction are you heading?

Hopefully the water temp anomaly and heat potential will keep development down. The heat potential shows the final approach shouldn't have any hot spots and the water temp anomaly looks to be normal.

I seem to remember Houston flooding pretty bad after a tropical storm a few years ago. Below is a link to a beach cam by me in NW florida, we are not even close to the storm

that was from tropical storm Allison- the only tropical storm ever retired. Some parts of Houston got over three feet of rain.

On a side note they induced labor in my sister in law a week before the storm- her due date was the worse day for Houston.

no Allison was slow moving came ashore- went north- turned around came back and stalled out for a while. This thing is going to move a lot faster.

wind and lack of power is going to the be the big issue. Lot's of water oaks will come down- shallow roots and heavy trees- they get uprooted.

Houston floods like crazy. It doesn't take much of a storm for many of the areas to be under water. We have a huge drainage problem.

I live halfway between Houston and Galveston in League City... I am out boarding up now. My area shouldn't flood from storm surge unless it is a 5, though some parts of League City are lower. I think there is too much panic after Katrina, people lose their heads. I have lived here 13 years and only evacuated once, for Rita... and that was because my daughter was just an infant. Turns out staying would have been fine.

Allison flooded the downtown area because it sat and rained on the city for a couple of days. Rain floods are not usually that much of a big deal but they happen often here because the streets are actually part of the floodwater system. Storm surge is another thing entirely... and a cat 5 hit in the wrong place could flood everything up to Beltway 8, the large 'ring' around the city.

Anyway, I plan on riding it out here, as soon as I finish boarding up, we'll be all set. It's quite a workout since I have a 2-story!

This is beginning to look a lot like Rita. Houston is now centermass. The next 36-48 hours will be very interesting. With the trend in East movement on the track due to land based surface front movement, it looks like we will be on the West side.

We are in North Houston in Humble, out by IAH. My job is putting us up in rooms out in the woodlands area, and then we will run our operations from a secure hardened facility.

We are set for a few weeks of food and water. Got gas in both vehicles, and we have places to go if the area is uninhabitable.

Awesome pic! I just heard they're experiencing 26ft high swells of NO. Not a good thing. This storm is so large that even if it veers westward, NO may well get a piece of that NE corner that does so much damage.

As of the 4:00 am advisory still a 2 hopefully it stays that way. The final approach still seems in not prime area for strengthening- although the physics of making landfall at a 90 degrees might be bad.

I figured being closer to the coast, there'd be more invested in gutters and sewers. The Hill Country has the same issue. When I was growing up, every time there was a bad storm, we'd have a flood. Lockhart was bad enough, but New Braunfels was the worst. A couple of floods lasted for days.

Good luck to you and JohnnyIB.

Geez....I just got an e-mail from my folks...who live between Panama City Beach and San Destin. For those who don't know, this is the Panhandle and is approx 1hr+ drive from Pensacola eastward. Their weather is fine, but their local nes is reporting 30' waves at the 2nd sandbar out from St. Andrews Park, which is Club La Villa, Spinnaker's, etc., territory just over the Hathaway Bridge on the east side of Panama City Beach. They also said their stairs to the beach at their home has surf already above it. That's about 60'-70' in from normal high tide. They also said that Highway 98 (THE main hwy) is closed between Destin and Fort Walton Beach because surf is already washing over the highway.

Wow, small world. LOL, they actually live down the street...Rosemary Beach (off 30-A). But my folks said 98 was closed from Destin westward, so I assume they also hear this on local news, as it doesn't effect them. And they don't have to ever really worry about rising water, as they're on the highest point on the entire Gulf of Mexico. They lose their stairs to the beach, but that's about it. Santa Rosa is on that same area/high point too.

From Austin TX.
Quite a few folks over reacting.
We've been insanely busy at work. Ran out of bottled water at one point today just before another shipment arrived. Probably run out of water tomorrow.
It was exceptionally humid today. Clouds came and went already.
Only a few drops, and a good wiff of rain.
Doubt were going to get any rain out of this.
We're probably going to break a record we set with Rita due to the number of evacuees shopping at my store.

C'hecking in from Cypress: We had some serious damage in our neighborhood due to trees falling over. My dad's truck got smashed by a tree. One neighbor had his chimney and roof smashed by a tree. Another one had their home split in to by a huge oak tree. For the most part, the area was safe from flooding, with wind being the big problem. My brother has a huge generator, so we have had power throughout, although it is out for the area.

Hey, I didn't know you were local (or if I did know, I forgot.) Cool! Sorry to hear about your parent's bayhouse. That sucks. The folks near the coast got smacked pretty hard this time.

Here in the middle of Houston, we lost power early in the storm. Then, wonder of wonders, the power came back in the early morning and has been solid ever since. We consider ourselves to be VERY lucky and have allowed neighbors to run extension cords to our outdoor outlets to power their refrigerators out of sheer gratitude for having been spared the agony of no electricity.

We've spent the past couple of days cleaning up. We lost two fences and I cut down my giant timber bamboo before the storm to keep it from beating the crap out of my house and those of my nearby neighbors. We've hauled a ton of debris to the curb. We're almost ready to start re-building but getting supplies will be a challenge.

The gas station in our neighborhood is open, which is remarkable. The line for gas extends out of the parking lot, down the block, and up our street. I talked to one woman who drove all the way from Pearland just for gas. She said ours was the only gas station within 25 miles that was open.

We walked around the neighborhood and saw lots of down trees, damaged roofs, flattened business signs, leaning fences, etc. None of the traffic lights work. We had diner at a Chinese restaurant that, amazingly, had power. They had a hand-drawn menu of four different meals for take-away only. If you liked, you could eat in their dining room, but they had no wait staff. Outside, a homeless guy asked me for a few dollars so he could get a meal. I invited him in and ordered him a meal which he ate at his own table.

My local gym was closed but not damaged and their website claims that I should be able to get in a workout tomorrow. Here's hoping. It could be he first time I get to work out in the dark with no AC. That'll be fun. :)

Oh, and get this, we made it all the way through the hurricane with no broken windows but my 6-year old daughter managed to break one on her own today. It was one of those classic parent moments where as soon as I knew that she was OK, I wanted to kill her. We've got plywood over the hole now, and we should be able to get glass for the window some time before Halloween, I suppose. :(

We finally got power back on in League City tonight! I lost a good chunk of roof shingles and got a leak... which made the ceiling in one of my upstairs bathrooms fall in. Also one other room has part of the ceiling coming down. I got a tarp over the bad area though, so we should be good until we get the roof fixed. I'd say 80% of the houses in my neighborhood had shingle damage.

Every ceiling in the upstairs either has significant water damage, or so much water came in that the ceiling and insulation collapsed to the floor.
all of the carpets upstairs were drenched through and through.
all of the ceilings on the first floor have water spots, and their's water in the walls.
2 sides of my fence is gone.
There is a big willow tree in my pool.

BUT.. I'm insured.. and my partner, me, and our 2 pups are fine, and will re-build.

Get ready to enjoy the sight of blue tarps for a few years. Glad to hear you guys are doing ok.

I doubt Texans will let it go a few years.

As a Texan only living in Florida I will not take offense to that http://forum.bodybuilding.com/images/icons/icon6.gif. But I think you will be surprised how long some people do.

I will be the oddball, I only had a green tarp... LOL

Though some of my neighbors are using white painters tarps, clear chair covering plastic, whatever then can find.

My insurance company said FEMA would bring one by... but I wasn't waiting. Who knows how much more water will come in before they get here. LOL

Day 6 without power. Yes it's sucking a bit. I go into work early for the internet and coffee, and I'm bed by 7:30 because it's dark and there's nothing to do. My diet has totally gone out the window as well.

Had a friend ask me if I had any damage from Ike. What the heck is the media reporting to the rest of the country?.
They should make it very clear that Ike only did damage to a small part of Texas.
Very unfortunate for those who got hit on the forum, but no impact for the majority.

They're most likely telling everyone, "A hurricane hit Houston!" and then showing pictures of Galveston.

I just got power back an hour ago. My fam is OK. I am so thankful to have power and get back to some form of normalcy. Haven't been eating enough and no gym...but have been enjoying the cool front we got after the storm and jogging several miles every day.

Still no power at work for me until at least Monday night. I guess I can consider this a nice vacation.

We have missed you girl. I am glad to hear you are ok. I have been through my share of hurricanes and they suck. They are usually followed by no power and an invasion of stinking love bugs.

Love this thread. I'm in Houston and just got back to the gym tonight after a week. I can't rememeber how many years it's been since such a lapse in working out.reading this from beginning to end was like living through the hurricane again and I had to laugh as I spent a great deal of the time dsrinking as well, walking around throiugh the storm because I could not grasp what was really happening. good luck to all of you who had it harder than me. I could not have taken one more night without power.

Thanks...wasn't sure if you guys even noticed that I was gone. :(

It's funny to hear about the drinking, b/c I indulged in some myself w/my sister in law. It then led to a huge fight between us...oh well, such is life. We haven't talked since.

I'm in the Atascocita area, and we are now at one week with no power. We might get power by early next week. Wife and kids went to Louisiana for the weekend.

It has been a bit of a hassle but for the most part it has been a good thing.
I've always liked to cook, so I have no problem cooking outdoors with various sources of fuel. I have three different outdoor cooktops to work with. A coleman camp stove, a Weber grill, and a decent propane grill with a side burner. I've got a few good pieces of cast iron to cook in, as well as some magnalite stuff. The best piece of equipment is a coffee pot. We are not starving.

We are just thinking of it as camping with a really nice comfortable tent. The yard is pretty much cleaned up, and now it is just keeping the house clean as we move from outside to inside so much during the day. The living room carpet is going to get tossed, it was time for it to go anyway. So it looks like I'm back to another tile project.

The overall situation is getting better. Gas lines are shorter, and the stores are all stocked. Ice was hard to come by for a few days, but that is getting better. I prefer a simpler style of living anyway, so this is not that hard for myself.

Dang man! At least you didn't chop it off! Is that from the chain saw, a tree branch, or falling off the ladder? I hope it is just cuts and bruises and it heals quickly.

Ouch! Careful out there man. At least our one tree that fell over was small enough we could push it upright... some 2x4 stakes and ratchet straps and it is straighter than before now. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Man, I can't believe how many ppl still have no power. We got ours Thursday, it was weird to be with no news for that period when you knew it was pretty much all Ike all the time 24/7 on TV and I knew nothing of it even though I got hit by the godamm eye of the storm 2x!!

Just lent my hyooge generator to some folks who are still without power, prolly till thursday.

I was looking outside with my flashlight, took a nap, looked outside again and thought...hmmm...how the eff can a 100 mph wind switch directions 180 degrees?

Obviously I lost power several hours before landfall and didn't know the storm was pretty much going to hit me directly.

Centerpoint is saying that our area will be without power until possibly next Thursday.

Honestly, I've been very thankful through this ordeal. I don't have power, or water pressure, am staying about 30 minutes further away from my school and job, have sat in traffic for about 10 hours in 2 days, but I honestly have no business complaining. My apartment and possessions are all in tact (minus the power), my family is safe and nothing major has been lost. People have it MUCH worse then I do, so I have no right to bitch or moan. When I see pictures of Galveston and areas that are completely destroyed, I realize that I was one of the lucky ones.

You are exactly right. My parents lost their house in San Leon, but a couple of their neighbors who sat out the storm are missing. Even in my neighborhood up in NW area, trees have completely demolished several houses. In fact, one tree that was leaning on a neighbor's house from the storm fell on my brother's house today, then squished his Boston Whaler and smushed the engines.

But, we are all still alive and unscathed physically. When I go into Galveston on Wednesday it will be to move my cousin out of her place and not to go look for her body or id' it somewhere.

Yeah it sounded like someone was banging on my roof with a hammer. I had the neighbor across the street look out, he said my shingles were standing up on end like a porcupine.

Fortunately my boat didn't fly away, and my daughter's playset stayed put in the back yard. Good thing I got it anchored! I was afraid the anchors wouldn't hold though. I expected to find it against the house or in my neighbors pool.

All my peeps are back home. My sister has power my bro doesn't.

Hopefully the water temp anomaly and heat potential will keep development down. The heat potential shows the final approach shouldn't have any hot spots and the water temp anomaly looks to be normal.

the water temp anomaly and heat potential is a powerful tool- in my Gustav thread I referenced it when they were forecasting Gustav to go to a four and it never did and they were also forecasting Ike to go to a four and it didn't. Rita and Katrina were the opposite on these indicators. Something to keep an eye on in the future imo.
