So I was at the gym...got the squat rack that is most comfortable for me and started to warm up for some push press, front and back squats.

As I'm getting ready to get going, this guy comes up and says something along the lines of - "So, you?re getting ready to get started? Whatcha working on?" So, thinking he is just wanting to work in, I say "Push Press".

Well, he asks me if I could move over to the rack (different model) next to it. The guy was a little shorter and knowing that I prefer the first rack to the other one, I decided to be nice and move thinking it would make things a little easier for the two of us. Well, as soon as I said "yeah, no problem" it clicked that this guy could have moved to the other rack just as easily as I could because the second rack has the pegs that are either just a bit too high or two low making it a bit uncomfortable to use...I was a little peeved, but not a big deal.

So, I move...and I watch this guy proceed to set up his work out and get going...not even using the rack. He used the pull up bar (which there are 3 other pull up bars in the gym out side of the one on that rack)...but did not use any other facet of the rack.

I got done with my sets of push press, and after watching this guy not use the rack, I unloaded my bar and walked over to him and asked, "Are you planning on actually using the rack, because I would like to do some squats and this rack over here the pegs are either just a bit too high or two low" He reaspnded, "I'm planning using the whole thing". I then said "well, if you're only going to be using the pull up bar, there are three others around the gym that you can use...I would appreciate it if you could change spots with me.." He started to say something else and I just said "Thanks."

He moved, I finished my set of squats on the original rack and not once did I see him actually use the other rack either.

Man, I don't mind working in with people and trying to help folks get their workouts in, but this just ticked me off...

Was I out of line in this?

Well, hind site, I wish my brain would have clicked in a little faster....and I normally don't mind letting people work in, but moving won't happen again.

Sounds like you were polite.

I tried, I know I have to watch how I word stuff some times cause I KNOW I can come across as a jerk some times....but I felt like, all things considered, I was pretty decent about it...

Man, if it was an option, I would be all over it....trust me

Understood. Trying to be nice just doesn't pay off sometimes :D

Next time you'll know to ask what they are using it for.

Yup...
I'm just about to the point where I hate going to the gym, honesly. I try to go in off hours to avoid people just for situations like this...I would rather keep my iPod on and not talk to anyone and have people not talk to me....lol. Outside of the gym, I'm not nearly this anti-social...but....eh, whatever....lol.

So, let me get this. You were at this rack first, you were using it and the guy ASKED you to move to another one?

Man, you are more polite then me. I would have said no and I should be done in about X minutes if you want to come back, I can hold it for you.

And no you where not out of line. Actually he was for asking you to move at a machine you where at first.

It is utterly ridiculous to kick someone out of a squat rack (doing squats no less!) so that they can do pullups. You were not out of line at all.

I appreciate it guys...

In looking back, I was trying to be understanding that every squat rack doesn't fit everyone....and that's why I was on the rack I was on. But as soon as I agreed to move, I was like "what the heck did I just do?...I just screwed myself"....lol

But I was, like...whatever, I agreeded to is...so live with it....

But then I saw him not even using the actual rack portion and I began to fume....and when I got done with push press (and having to bump the bar up to reach the higher pegs), I decided I wasn't going to stick with that rack....
and he wasn't using it.

I dunno...the whole situation was messed up and I'm pretty sure the guy either does, or used to work at the gym too, which makes it a little worse ....

eh....it's over....I won't make that same mistake again...

No not out of line more polite than I would have been ,I have a problem in my gym with the PT's and their clients ,they crowd you on the benches and have hit one doing flys ,I didn't think I had to look left and right before doing a rep !, but find a few well chosen words can work wonders and they soon leave you in peace ,but I'm beginning to feel like being anti-social at the gym as well put mine down to age !

No, and I also would not have moved. I have the same issue with the pegs on the racks and would never move for someone. (Well I actually might, but only for a very good reason and only if the identical rack was free on the other side of the gym. But it better be a REALLY good reason)

You were more than polite. I don't think I would've moved, but that was nice of you. If I had moved and he started to do pull-ups, I may have hung on his legs like a tree sloth and invited him to pull my big self up with him.

Had it been me, I would have blown the pissant away had I an AK-47, or a Glock, or a...oh, hell, wrong thread...

Anyway, no, you were more than kind, but it's because of people like those I choose to work out at home. Being nice once is fine, but I wouldn't let it become a habit...

I've been burned once, or twice in the gym. You'll learn what signs to look for. One very big advantage over home gyms is the availability of spotters if you get into a jam. Ipods in a gym are understood to mean "don't talk to me!!". Use it.
No you weren't rude.
Just continue to be true to yourself though.

Yeah, I got home last night from class and my wife asked me how my day went....
Of course I told her about knuckle head at the gym. She knowing me like she does even said, "and you moved?" I laughed and just told her "I don't know what I was thinking when I did it....but yeah...I did."
She was in disbelief because she knows I don't go looking for trouble, but generally am pretty outspoken....

I had an off day, what can I say.

I did find out that the guy IS a PT at my gym...next time I'm in there I'm going to say something to him/mgmt about that crap....

I don't know why, but it's just bothered me enough to be a PITA about it.

This is why I wear my headphones and turn my IPod up as loud as I can tolerate it and never make eye contact with anyone at all. I never look up and never talk to anyone once I start lifting (except my wife from time to time). This way, no one bothers me, like in your case. Everyone pretty much leaves me the he77 alone and that's the way I like it. It was very generous of you to move but you can see the consensus here ... no one else would have. Nice guys always finish last.

I thought it was, "master of your domain"?

You were not rude, infact you were a bit of a softie. That person just alpha dogged you. They have made you subserveant to them. How does that make you feel?

You were there first, right?

A good response would have been any of these three.

"F" off, I was here first, and I'm staying, punk!

Get bent, I was here first, and I'm staying, punk!

Direct throat punch, he is trying to alpha dog you, and you can't let him.

They were totally out of line for asking you in the first place.

I just don't like it when people pull that sort of crap.

And I'm the same way....don't mind letting folks work in with me at all, and I guess thats what caught me off guard because I thought thats what he was going to ask me....
But when he asked me to move and I quickly (thinking that he was still just wanting to work in with me) answered yes....it took a second and I was like, "what the heck did I just do?" But went ahead and did it because I agreed to it.

It really caught me off guard more than anything else....

Like you, I don't mind working with people....but I was really just kind of blown away by this.

You were a nice guy to move, and I commend you on that. Definitely not a lot of nice people at my gym. Either just jumping in w/o checking (even though they know you're on it), or refusing to share the one piece of equipment they're lounging on.

But I digress ...

If there's more than one piece of equipment then they can, and should, use the other one w/o disturbing you. So no, you weren't out of line.

As was mentioned, you shouldn't have moved in the first place. while the other people there have the same rights as you as paying members, many of them are just plain foolish and don't realise when they're acting inappropriately unless they're told.

I think you showed remarkable restraint.. when spotting my gf on squats I moved away for a moment to do a set of rows - then came back to find a guy doing curls in the rack she was using.

Bless her heart, being the lovely person she is she was even apologizing to him for wanting to use it again.. but I was a little less polite in telling him he could do curls in five different places in the gym.
