View Full Version : How many squirts of cologne?

I need the input of some OG's on this issue. I know it's kind of a dumb question. I don't know much in the way of cologne because my dad would always shower and shave right before going out to a function and he never wore cologne because he claimed it would clash w/his aftershave. Anyway, I'm always conservative on this matter as I don't ever want to be THAT GUY who'll make your eyes watery if you're in a 10 foot radius. So for that reason, I just give one good squirt aimed at the collar area so it'll hit my neck and my shirt at once. At least I don't do what my cousin does. He sprays twice into the air and then walks into it. lol.

Ok, so how much is enough but not too much? Thanks gentlemen.

Soap and antiperspirent is all I use. If that doesn's smell good enought I need another shower :)

sorry can't help on this one.

I can't believe I'm answering this, lol.

Ahem... todays' young lads think that you have to bathe in cologne in order for it to be detectable. I suppose this really hasn't changed since I was a teen either.

Cologne isn't to be sprayed on clothing as you just described. And it's also hard to describe what a "squirt" might be, but a squirt should be minimal and imho, applied just below the ears/on the neck. In fact, you can "squirt" one side and quickly wipe and transfer the excess to the other. And of course, cologne that you think you don't have enough of on, will change intensity and even smell different as it blends with your body's oils. And quality cologne will last you an entire day. You shouldn't be able to smell someone else's cologne when standing 3' away. It is meant to be detected under much closer contact

Thanks! Like my dad always told me, "Don't hesitate to ask a dumb question. At least you'll be less dumb if you know the answer."

Smart dad. I always liked a slight variation of that; "There's no such thing as a stupid question if you don't know the answer."

Anyway... cologne is best used when used very sparingly. You shouldn't be able to smell it yourself (with the exception of immediately after you've applied it).

that's the kind of thing you get a whiff of in the locker room when the youger guys have been there. Cough!! Cough!! lol

Anyway, I never wear the stuff. All you can smell on me is my clean Dove shampoo, conditioner, soap and deoderant. lol Guess that makes me a Dove girl. lol But I'm very clean!!

That's very close to my application.

One on the upper torso, one on the abdomen, then wipe the forearms across the body.

Good question. One of my pet peeves about colognes with squirt applicators is that they "squirt" too much. When I come across that bottle (name escapes me, but one of my newer Ralph Lauren brands) , I'll squirt it on my fingers and apply to neck and wash off the excess from my fingers.

That's about all I want to smell... just a Nice, Clean Man.

I don't like smelling a bunch of Cologne. :o Makes me wonder what the man is covering up? Funk?

Same thing goes for women.

Please...Take a shower every day, freshen up as often as you need to, but don't spray on all the damn perfume and cologne! Please!

If the cologne comes in a spray bottle, just a couple of sprays. A little goes a long way. I spray on my chest and ab area. If you don't have a spray bottle, get one. Go to any beauty supply store (yes, straight men can go in because they sell barber supplies) and get a small plastic bottle with an atomizer sprayer on it. Fill it with your cologne and use that.

If you use aftershave and cologne, they should be the same brand and fragrance. Aftershave is just a lighter version of cologne. You can make your own aftershave of your favorite cologne scent by watering down the cologne with some witchazel and a little more alcohol. Sometimes I use one or the other or both. If I have only the aftershave, that's all I use, no cologne that day.

How many squirts? None, if you shower and use antiperspirant/deodorant. I used to use cologne a long time ago until I realized how bad it was for my skin and how much cleaner I felt not having that stuff on me.

Please...Take a shower every day...

I take 2 to 3 each day in the summer, and usually just one per day in winter :p

I only started wearing cologne becasue every year for Christmas for 15 years, my mom has bought me a boxed set - cologne, after shave, deodorant, and usually other item that I would never have thought of on my own (random item every year - got a sweet pocket knife one year, a CD another time). Anyway, i give 2 squirts to the face one to the chest and now that I shave my head, the wife joked about putting one up there too - yes it tingles.

For most of my life, however, women have exclaimed that I smell nice and what's that cologne. I would always say that's my secret. Now that I am old and have had my play, I'll let you in.

Mennen speed stick, the dark green deodorant. that's it. real strong scent, and women love it. use Nivea afeter shave balm, it has almost no scent, so it won't interfere with your secret "cologne".

I had a couple fellow students when I going through college in my 30's that never could get the idea that they needed to change colognes in order to stop smelling like soured milk,,,,,What did they do? they put more of the same grap on which turned rancid almost emmediately. They often complained that they could not girls...Hmmmm I wonder why?

Depends on which cologne I'm wearing, some are just stronger and last longer than other.

Most, I go with a squirt on the neck and 2-3 on the shirt.

One squirt spread around the neck and a squirt rubbed on the upper chest.

Depending on the situation you may want a little on the upper inner thighs. Probably not needed in most daily work situations, unless your name is Dirk Diggler.

Yep, I'd venture a guess that most people have no idea this happens. If you like the way a certain cologne smells in the store...or on someone else...it doesn't mean it'll smell that way on you.

But probably the biggest offenders out there are the people who never had a parent tell them how to use cologne. Many of them figure that if they can't smell it anymore...they need to put some more on. I used to work with a big guy who did this. It seemed that every time he came back from our break room he'd reek from the overuse of his cologne. People just don't get it...that you're not supposed to be able to smell it on yourself.

And as far as women wearing perfumes; there are certain scents that I find extremely "attractive". But just like men, women have to apply it low key too, and many don't do this. Nothing worse than to have a woman walk by..and her scent lingers in a large pathway for 15 mins afterward.

I get all kinds of complements on mine. I just use one short spray and that is it! Just enough apparently. I hate people that drown themselves in it!

I work with teens too....and in the summer when we go on a retreat, there is nothing like sharing a room with a bunch of guys passing around the Axe Bodyspray and spraying enough where it looks like the room has been crop dusted.....
And that smell LINGERS for ever....

Oh, and I just use a spray or two after I get out of the shower (with matching deodorant....I'm OCD that way)
Then just get dressed.

dbx give some spot on advise up there...

On a side note....there is a cologne or perfume that some people where that smells like complete ass. And I don't know the name of it...and I want to ask someone what the heck it's called...but I DON'T want to encourage anyone to think they smell good.
How the heck do I find out the name of this stuff with out encouraging somene to keep wearing it? lol

Simple, ask them what it is. Most people will tell you the name without fishing for a compliment and there is no need to give one.

lol, this thread is starting to remind me of a Three's Company episode where Larry is trying to seduce an elderly woman to get her away from Jack.

Larry:What's your name, might I ask?
Woman:Martha.
Larry:Ahh such a lovely name... reminds one of vineyards. What a lovely fragrance you're wearing.
Woman: Thank you.
Larry:What do you call it?
Woman:Ben Gay.

Yeah, but I would think even asking what it (the stench) was might elude that I like it....and that's NOT what I want to contribute to one bit...lol.

I do...I really wish I knew the name of this stuff so I can post it incase anyone in here actaully wears it I can tell them to PLEASE STOP!!!

Reminds me of rotting mulch...

Cologne is disgusting on men. What's the purpose? Do you stink? Then take a shower. Use of cologne implies you either need to hide some personal odor or you are so terribly insecure that you believe the ridiculous advertising that sells this stuff.
