I saw Pumping Iron first time last night. 25th anniversary edition. Very cool.
One thing though. I don't want to sound critical (cos who am I?) but did Lou Ferringo look like he had ****ty form? No tempo, bar hitting the chest.
I'm thinking that maybe my idea of form is all wrong and he's got it right.......

How long have you been lifting seriously. I checked out your profile but you don't say when you started. I ask this because I want to give my answer without sounding like a d*ck.
Eh WTF! here is what I have to say. ;)
There was a thread started a few weeks ago. This person added one of my videos. I got criticized about my form in it by some. Then I proved my technique by showing a photo of myself standing next to someone who weighs 70lbs more than me. My arms are just as big as his.
When lifting heavy some form is going to be lost period. But this needs to happen to add size period. Don't get me wrong 80% of all my exercises in the gym are done with "perfect form". Some sets need to be a little overboard sometimes. My benchpress and squats as you can see in my bodyspace page in the videos they are done with perfect form.
With that being said, I think the clips in the film are from their heavy sets ;)

This is why I posted in the misc. He he....
I knew this was a difficult one to broach as Ferringo's results prove a big point, but I couldn't figure out it out. I've only been lifting 8 months and I've lots to learn, work out at home, so Pumping Iron is somewhat of a revelation to me.
If it appears I'm criticising a legend, apologies, I wasn't. I just didn't understand.
Heavy sets makes sense. I understand now.
It is difficult to get to grips with these things. On one hand I've got everyone telling me to use form, then I see a champion apparently going against the very thing I've been told.
Thanks for clearing it up.
I'll also update the bodyspace details
Thanks again.

Let's see.... Arnold good form, Lou bad form.... How many times did Lou win the Mr. Olympia?? Zeeeerrrro. However, in a later interview, Arnold did say he felt that Lou should have won it at least once.
Alot of the pro's I see working out have bad form. Jay Cutler was the worst until I saw him on the Olympia Preview here on BB.com this year. He has totally changed and was working out with very strict form.
Maybe their theory is that as long as you are moving something, a muscle somewhere is growing. LOL!

Carl gave you a great answer.
I'll never forget big Lou cranking out reps on the shoulder press and screaming "Arnold, Arnold, Arnold!"
But legend or not, Lou is still an a$$hole. Even makes kids pay $20 for his autograph at shows and he's one of the few bodybuilders who made money from his career.:o WTF! Arnold even has taken pot shots @ Lou for this behavior @ the Arnold Classic.

That's basically it.
I use very strict form, and after all the videos I've seen, and people in the gym I've seen over the years, I don't fault people for using bad form. If that's what they want to do and it's working for them, then great. It's just not for me.

I mentioned this in a thread about a year ago when somone who will remain unnamed "BH:D" said I had asked a stupid question.
I reminded him I haven't been lifting for 20 or 30 years like he and some other folks here.
we should to look back and try and remember the things we thought were true about lifting back when we were in there first years of learning it.
We sometimes get a little impatient with folks here,
you can say "search the web" all you want but when they do they will get 20 different opinions from various sources, some of which are only profit motivated.
When people ask a question in 035, maybe its because they like what they see here, and they want to know what folks here did, not some nameless somone on the net.
ok mini rant over

Well said. I think it's important to note also that changing up your routine is a part of the process. Lately I've been doing some heavy stuff where my last few reps have some horrid form, but my muscles are just screaming. This week I did higher reps and drop sets with lower weights that left my muscles just toasted.
It's all about what works, and the heavy stuff is better on film.

I should say I wasn't ranting at anyone in particular or at anyone on this thread,
its just that Stevelegh posted a question that some people would trash him over, and fortunately that didn't happen here,
I think my point was that it has happened in the past, the fact that it happens less in the 035 section is what makes it a safe haven for people like me who have gone through life with no clue as to fitness and training and then decided its time to make a change.
Its one of the reasons I still come to this forum :)

Thanks Chodan,
I must admit, I was a little nervous about asking this which is why I posted it in the misc.
I don't know much about all this and everything I've learned is from this forum. Much appreciated that I didn't get trashed. Even better that my question got answered very well by Carl.
I don't venture outside the O35's apart from the occasional lurk and don't intend to do any more than that. It's a great place here.
OK guys, group hug, kleenex are available to those who've been crying, lets go out there and make a difference on this forum.......

very true,
I wouldn't point to ntrllftr as someone who bashes before he thinks
I would point to him as someone who will call trolls on their bs or people who claim to know there stuff posting nonsense,
More than once I have seen a post by someone and thought "hmm I didn't know that" then ntrllftr comes in and points aout the flaws in the logic and I find out that the person may not know what they claim to know.

The third video is actually a technique for powerlifting. For the bench presser that wears a denim bench shirt, it was developed partly by the lifters from Metal Militia. Of course the video is odd because they are practicing the form without gear or heavy weight. It has a purpose, just not for bodybuilding at all!!! Very similar in mechanics to the decline press though. It shortens the stroke of the lift in order to allow for heavier weights to be pressed in competition.
