Oktoberfest starts on 20th September.

I thought I'd post this following WhiskeyJack's post on the other hobbies thread. I wonder if this is the beer tasting event he mentioned........

Looks like a blast. I'll be there next June, so I'll miss the big party. I'll still drink some beer, though!

Go to the Hofbrauhaus in the city.

It's where Hitler held the socialist worker party meetings. The swastikas have been painted over with Bavarian flags, but still very interesting.

And the beer......... OMG!

Been there, many times. Great place, the beer is good, and the fresh pretzels are killer. Great atmoshere to just hang out and meet new people. Get a plate of food while your there. Nothing beats the fresh, real saurkraut, and sausage platter with potato dumplings.

A group of us one night, put away 4 litres of beer each. We went back the next night but could only do 3. Ouch!

I really enjoy German food, when I can get it in Germany.

We used to have a mission that would take us to the city Padderborn. There was the great old inn style place. They had the best food, the Schnitzel was killer.

Ah, lederhosen! And the ladies look soo beautiful in traditional Bavarian dress. I love the Bavarian's sense of occasion and their traditions. I'm on for my 5th Oktoberfest. I normally do 4 days and was booked to do the same, but I'm not in training for it this year due to my new found respect for my health and lifting, so 2 days it is. My liver couldn't do 20 pints a day for that long.

We stay on the Shillerstrasse opposite Max Schmelling's bar. Ask your parents, I bet they know where I mean.

Prost!

Come with me, if you can't do ten steins (litres) of beer in a day and be in the the beerhall at 10:30 next morning, you're a pussy!

German food rocks! but it's very fattening , every time I go visit my mom she has weiss wurst or brat wurst and dumplings and she makes a killer sauce!
When I was young I remember going to the German butcher with her and they would always give out food :D she also makes a potato salad that she could have made millions with.

Schatzi!

So if your parents are from Munchen, from where are you? ;)
I was in Munich last year and visited the 'Augustiner am Dom' in the altstat.
Beer and food was very fine. My kind of eating.
The biggest challenge was getting the tipping right. Too much and you look like an extravagant tourist. Too little you look like a cheap skate.
Fortunately we were visiting my son who helped out and explained my tourist German to the waitress. :p

Anyway, I give 4 stars to the Augustiner am Dom.

Oh, and I recommend any kind of Kondeln.

I lived outside of Munich for two years in my 20's, a town called Starnberg. It's on a beautiful glacier fed lake about 45 min north of the Alps. Munich is such a great city, but if you're in the area be sure to get out to some of the outlying areas as well - it's such an incredibly beautiful area of the world!

Thanks for thinking of me Steve. Actually, at that time my wife and I were considering bidding on a travel auction for Oktoberfest but in the end backed off in favour of something else.

I was never a pussy when it came to drinking beer. That said, I don't drink anymore at all.

GBG, yea the food is fattening, but ohsogood!! You just need to do the work to burn it off.
