Rap music??

Little Wayne looks like a decrepit vulture. For god's sake, if I was that ugly, I wouldn't scowl and grimace so much. I'd try to look as not-ugly as someone that ugly could possibly look. Smile you son of a bitch, it won't make you pretty but it will damn sure be easier on my eyes.

Dear God, is this the face of hip hop? What happened to style? Originality? Artist control? What happened to the art of story telling? I remember listening to KRS-1's "Love's Gonna Get You" and feeling like a movie was playing through my head. I swear I could've closed my eyes and seen the journey of a teenager that went from struggling student to drug dealer to a man wallowing in regret over his choices in life.

I could've closed my eyes to 2pac's "Brenda's Got A Baby" and envisioned with crystal clarity the hardships that a single mother goes through.

Some music touched my heart and soul. Some songs didn't mean jack squat but just sounded really good. But either way, there was thought and creativity behind it.

And the videos. Oh the videos! Each video was so unique. One could be set in a new york sewer while another could be set in a coffee shop with a live jazz band. Each one had it's own feel.

Yes, there is still a lot of contemporary stuff that has talent behind it but most of it is confined to the underground scene. Will hip hop ever reform? I highly doubt it. Hip hop wasn't as popular back then so the dollar potential wasn't there. Hence less record company involvement. Now, there is more record company involvement. Their primary drive is increased sales so they target the young and gullible.

I'm sorry to say that hip hop is dead.

I just hope rock n roll doesn't follow.

That is how I feel as well...I have grown up on rap,r&b,hiphop, disco, dance music. I find myself listening to older music. Even back in the early 90s like C&C Music Factory.

I also listen to hairband music too. I cant stand all this newage rock, or whatever it is.

Outside of some people like Usher, Justin Timberlake, and yes...I like boyband type music.....I just dont connect with anything out nowdays....

Why are you worrying about what he looks like? The boys lyrics is hot though he is one twisted son of a bitch I have all his songs. I just downloaded My life by Game featuring Lil Wayne.

I did not grow up on hip hop I was IN hip hop. I rapped with Grandmaster Flash, Krs1, LL Kool J, The UTB Boys, Shamrock, QueensBridge.

When I was into rap back in the days rap was not even played on the radio the only people who knew about rap was US the streets.

Then the Fatback Band came out on the radio and it was slightly OK to listen to rap. Then The Sugar Hill Gang came out and that was it, Rap just started blowing up from there on.

Remember a lot of the music you seem to like originated from dance/disco so I wouldnt be dissin it like that.

Im not quite your age, but believe me when I say I was on top of rap/hiphop for my day. Kool MOE Dee, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy, KRS1, RUN DMC, DougieFresh, SlickRick, SaltNPeppa, OakTown 357, D.O.C, Roxanne, I can go on...I was in on the dance/breakin years. Those to me are still the golden years of rap/hip hop...OH ...and you cant forget DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince..Heavy D, Soul 2 Soul,LL COOL J..

IM NOT street and dont claim to be..BUT..I am an original B-boy!:)

No disrespect but dude seriously you have no idea what I am talking about none of that music came for disco we made our own beats. With a beatbox, echo champer and dups from some imports

I was talkng about hip hop before it was played on the radio. The people you mentioned all came out AFTER the streets were doing their thing and then they got thier big break.

Fresh Prince is a Joke he is no real hip hop artist, yes he was kool and had great music but he is an oreo cookie.

{Mostly correct,but I would put Moe Dee (the treacherous 3) as one of the Old school brothers. Classic battles with Busy Bee}

We were straight up hip hop underground ****. We ran the streets making tapes and circulating them, since our music wasn't played on the radio.Do you happen to still have any of those tapes? If so, have any been converted to mp3?

All I listened to from about 86-91 was rap. Then it all went downhill and is still there. I never could get into the whole west coast thing. The only exception to that is NWA/Ice Cube. My favorites were LL, Run DMC, PE, BDP, Beasties, Whodini, Dana Dane, Kurtis Blow, mostly NYC rap but some Miami scattered in there. There was a station in Tampa that would play only NY rap late at night on Saturdays. The DJ was the guy who DJ'd Digital Underground. Some of the mixes he put together on the air were incredible. One night he tried to play only Miami music when he abruptly interrupted the show and said he couldn't take it anymore and had to put NY back on. IIRC, he stopped Afro Rican mid song and put on Rebel Without a Pause. Nowadays if I listen to rap at all, it's only on Sirius 43.

Oh yeah, how could I forget The D.O.C., EPMD, Eric B and Rakim, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane. Still have quite a few of those on vinyl. I really quit buying rap around the time the Geto Boys came out with My Mind's Playin' Tricks on Me.

The battle that Kool Moe Dee had with LL was legendary. Nothing like that nowadays either.

Most people don't understand that before MTV there was RAP, the evolution was in the 70's not the 80's, yea radio play made it popular in Iowa, and North Dakota, but the beat of the streets came long before it was accepted and Young MC won his grammy, as far as I can remember Young MC was considered a sell out by those in the know.

Sorry I didn't break it down, I used to run with a lot of those guys back in the day, Went to school with Kool Mo and a few others, and even had half a deal myself with my crew back in the day, of course the brother with the hookup ruined it for everybody (As always). Man that WAS a lifetime ago.
