View Full Version : Ok, how in the hell are barbell measured?

I keep seeing 30mm barbells and 32mm barbells, so I'm trying to figure out what the hell my Dick's Sporting Goods barbell is and I keep coming up with 88.9mm. I wrap my measuring tape around it (inches) and it comes out to 3.5". I do that and get 88.9, and if I halve 3.5 it's 44mm which still seems huge compared to what I see online.

How the hell am I supposed to do it? Or am I just totally stupid and the mm is taking about something else like bearing size?

You're measuring circumference and not diameter! So yeah, you just failed your geometry!

*smacks head*

Guess that's what I get for trying to do this directly after a workout and on very little sleep.

Bah :(

Only radius is half of the diameter. Half of the circumference doesn't equal the diameter.

C=Pi*D, so the diameter of your barbell is 28.3mm, assuming you measured the circumference correctly.

Didn't know the equation offhand so I just eyeballed the barbell with my tape and got 1 1/8", which would be 28.575.

Either way it's 28.something , so I guess my next question is how much of a difference would I notice if I got a 30mm barbell? Would it affect anything lift wise?

But it's one of those things that you have to feel for yourself, as dirty as that sounded. :D

Either that or 28.125 ;)

Well actually I'm thinking of getting the bar you got (at least I think it was you), located here: http://www.strengthandconditioningequipment.com/index.php?crn=206&rn=487&action=show_detail

That one is similar size to mine right now.

I was also looking at a York bar but I don't know what the weight limit is, not that I'd approach either one.

I have a Pendlay HD bar and I see you got your eye on a less whipier bar. I'm also planning getting a very rigid bar that I can use for heavy deadlifts. The HD i smore than enough bar from me but it's a bar that tends to lean more to the olympic lifts, which mean it's whippier.

Less whippy meaning the York bar?

I can't find any more info about the York bar, that site says virtually nothing I want to know about it. I honestly don't do any real olympic lifts, all I use my barbell for are deads, squats, and bench. No cleans or jerks or anything.

I've heard a lot about them but never really saw them anywhere, I'm not sure where a good place to buy them is.

Also not sure how much they are, but I don't want to spend much more than $200 right now.

Good bars are more than $300.

I don't need one like that, I'm sure either the HD bar or the York would be fine for me.

I wish there was a place around here that actually sold decent ****, I'm so tired of mainstream stores that sell garbage.

88.9 divide 3.141 = about 28mm diameter

I guess I'll still go for that one then. There is only one HD bar right, there isn't a higher version of it? I know there is a higher quality Pendlay bar, but I thought the HD was the only one, and that it was just a tougher Economy bar or something.

Probably:) I'll have to put socks on the pins too, that's the one thing I hate about my Powertec rack, it's metal on metal. They could have put some rubber on the pins and whatnot.

That would be a good idea too, I've thought of some sort of rubber bumper that I could affix to the rack.

I just saw the "Rogue" bar too, and it's $10 more. Lifetime warranty, but I don't know how its characteristics compare to the HD.

I also don't like how this site uses the same picture for the HD and Rogue. I hate when sites do that, makes me not want to do business with them because it seems shoddy to me.

The rogue bar is the same as the economy bar. I think Pendlay makes the rogue bar or so I've read in crossfit.com.

It seems that Glenn does have something to do with the Rogue bar as well. I'm looking into it more right now. The Rogue has two rings, that's the only difference I see so far.

His number is the Wichita Weightlifting #.

I meant rings on the bar for both olympic and powerlifting, unless the HD has those too ;)
