View Full Version : **Official Keto Section Rant Thread**

Hi all and welcome! I thought that after my somewhat long hiatus I would bring a gift to the Keto Section in the form of a Rant Thread.
Feel free to rant about anything and everything in relation to (or even not in relation to) Ketogenic Diets.
I searched to make sure a similar thread did not exist, and I am surprised one does not.
So, RANT AWAY.. and reps to those who end up on the first few pages.

Rant:
So, many of you may know me from this section, but some may not. I used to frequent here at CKD.com for quite a while. In fact, I used primarily CKD and other Ketogenic adaptations to take me from 415lbs down to my current weight of 265lbs.
I am happy at my current weight, able to play all of the sports I am involved in quite well. My weight has stopped being a restriction for me, and just part of who I am. That being said, I have been strongly considering joining the military.
Now, for anyone familiar with the military you will know that there are required weights you must meet based on your height. At 5'11" I am required to hit a weight of 196lbs to be able to 'enlist'. My only worry at this point is that I will be sacrificing a LOT of muscle to be able to hit that weight, as my current lean body mass is sitting at 205lbs.
In the past my primary goals in CKD were to lose fat while maintaining muscle mass. However, I'm now going to be just going for pure weight loss. I feel like I'm entering a new world of Keto, this should be fun.

Awesome thread, awesome idea, and awesome progress bro!!!!
That sounds like a daunting task and kind of scary to ose so much MORE weight....but the military is an awesome choice, I say go for it bro.

Not really keto related, but I'm tired of the 98% of the people on this site who do not compete, eat like they're contest dieting 365 days/year. Actually I could care less how they eat, but they give advice to impressionable kids that you have to eat rice and chicken breast every meal of every day.
Second rant. Cottage cheese and freakin peanut butter are not magical foods. You're not going to lose all your muscles if you don't eat this magical combination of foods before bed. And you don't need to buy some expensive ass protein to drink before bed either.
I could go on and on, but that will do for now. Thanks for posting this.

I hate people that tell me "oh your doing no carbs? That Atkins guy died of a heart attack! You had better be careful!" So then you try to explain to them the principles of keto, but they are too ignorant to understand. I hate these people.
Meanwhile, I just had a full blood workup done, and everything is perfect, so perfect the doctor wanted to know what my diet was like. After telling him I consume 150 grams of fat a day, he was speechless.
2 months of keto- down 20lbs, with 8-10 more to go...and then I will clean bulk.

Can we add oatmeal to this? Literally every other post in the main section is about f**king oatmeal.
And the "necessity" for fast carbs and fast protein PWO. I don't think old school bodybuilders choked down whey+gatorade PWO. It was steak, eggs, potatoes, milk, hell, even Arnold's shakes had whole eggs and heavy cream.

you can ask to get taped. for the air force, you can be over the limit as long as you're under 20% BF. that's how it was when i joined. I had to be 175. i was 185 at 13%, but my recruiter still wanted me to be under 175. he told me this a month before i left, so i dieted, used diuretics and laxatives and weighed in at 169. plus you're weighed in your chonies, so you'll see a couple lbs less than you normally do. after basic, my tech school was tri-service and i saw a A LOT of army guys and girls who were obese. i think due to recruiting shortages, their PT test passing grade was very low.
more important than weight is being fit enough to pass the physical requirements to finish basic training. for the AF, it's 1.5 miles in under 12 minutes. push-ups and sit ups are a breeze for people who workout, so i would focus on running. army tests at 2.0 miles and the marines do 3.0 miles.
the military is great. i'm in a career field i really enjoy and found that i am good at. there are few surprises. the benefits are good too.

I actually find that most people who give me the "Oh, you're on THAT diet, huh?" usually don't know what the heck to say when I explain the science of it. They just stare at me with the "I just got owned" look lol.

I NEVER do cardio outside of mandatory PT and I still smoke most of my unit.
The Air Force did away with the minimum scores for the individual tests, but you still need a 75/100 to pass the PFT. By that theory, since I get max points for waist circumference, push-ups, and sit-ups, I can literally WALK the 1.5 mile run in 15:45 and still pass lol. But, "Excellence in all we do", so I still bust my ass.
Honestly, just work hard, eat right, and stay motivated. When you're in basic, the weight will continue to just fall right off. I lost 5lbs during basic, but my strength went through the roof and I looked a LOT leaner than just 5lbs.
Oh, and that was with 3 meals/day, no pre/post workout nutrition, and no weight training :D. Broscience FTL!

Either way dropping from 265 to anywhere around the required weight is going to be a daunting, but fun task. The running will be no problem as I am an experienced triathlete so running is a part of my everyday life, heh. The pushups are tough right now, but I'm sure as the weight goes down they will get easier as well.

i got to MEPS at 169, left basic at 185. I probably put back all the water i drained refilled my colon. don't do pushups every day. do them on chest or tri or shoulder days. just bust out as many as you can in 1 or 2 minutes as your warm-up before lifting.

it's odd that i'd be keto-ing. reason: i love sweets. oatmeal raisin cookies, cherry pies, boston cream pie, eclairs, chocolate cake, fruit tarts, and BREAD PUDDING. average bread pudding can make me happy. really awesome bread pudding can make me smile as i chew.

Yeah I saw that thread too..
RANT: My dietetician and my GP (which happens to be specialised in nutrition) know nothing about keto and told me that eating fat to lose fat was bad. My ORL (the doctor who's specialised in ears, throat,..), which I saw this morning for a regular ear-checkup (got surgery last year) and whom I asked about my TSH results, knows more about nutrition than the two other doctors together.
He looked into my ear, looked at my test results, and then we spoke about keto, PSMF etc.. He's also the first doctor who told me to watch out for overtesting (in the thyroid case).

x1000. i hate people who don't know **** about nutrition and lecture me. im eating 8 - 12 eggs a day, and i recieve countless egg yolk lectures. of course, none of these people know what they're talking about. same thing with my saturated fat intake, cholesterol intake, etc. ive read studies, articles from scientific journals, and studied physiology and biology. yet apparently someone who saw a commercial on tv in regards to the dangers of cholesterol intake (or any other bullsh*t put out by the media) automatically knows more than i do.
(in before i turn this rant towards uneducated people talking about anabolic steroids)

And then when I pop open my Can of fresh crab they look at me weird....mmm, fresh crab meat.
And now she is eating steak and mashed potatoes and soda....I'm watching her right now -- what a freaking oinker....oh...I see Bannana Bread on her plate and a cookie....ouch, quick death for her.

i'm not going to rant; i enjoy life on keto!
but okay, i'll bite. having to buy new jeans every 4 weeks is a REAL pain. God damn. I've decided just to tough it out with cheap pairs until I start stabilizing a bit better... Even if the scale isn't fluctuating, the sizes keep dropping.

About your cold, I would eat carbs. I don't know why but carbs always make me feel better faster, so IMO, eat a little ice cream, just don't overdo it.
If you want to stay on keto, there are some keto icecreams recipes that are pretty good on the recipe forum, I've tried Eileens' vanilla icecream and it tastes just like the real deal !

Why is it that people think I'm a dud because I am in better shape, and have more money than they do - I'm talking my friends here, NOT in general.
It's because they spend $100s every week on fast food, and beer, and cigarettes - while I spend much less than that on whole foods and choose not to binge on my own case of Miller every weekend!!!
Of course, they don't understand why they have no money, and huge bellies!!! WTF. Seriously, it's not cool to sit around every weekend, drinking and ordering pizza. Get off your ass - I'm not the dud, you are.

Right, cause weight watchers is normal- "Excuse me, I have 3 points left to eat today, should I do the ice cream sandwich or the double fudge brownie..... Oh don't worry, it's Weight Watchers brand."

Man, I don't even bother trying to explain it to some people anymore. Someone at work asked me last night why I ate so many salads and wasn't adding olive oil counterproductive..... while they ate their king size Twix and 42oz fountain drink.
Those people would CRY if they saw my food budget. I spend less a month than I bet they do a week, muwhaha.
Mine is actually quite a bit because I buy a LOT of fresh veggies, and I like seafood, which is a bit more pricey. I'd rather spend $100 a week on healthy food than $50 a week on processed junk though.

A friend of mine says her kids love when she goes back to Weight Watchers, the house is always full of WW cake and biscuits.
Oh, rant: I spent a day at a family party, where everyone spent the day horsing into booze, bread, curry, rice, naan bread, cake, more booze, panna cotta, more booze, biscuits and sweets. I had a few bits of chicken picked out of the curry and a bag of salad. And lots of water and black coffee. Three hours later, still starving, I headed to the fridge and found a tub of cottage cheese. My mother looked at me and said "You really do eat a lot, don't you?"

why are people so damn afraid of creatine, still? this isn't keto specific, but damn, a friend of mine is trying to bulk and i explained to him that it will help with recovery, injury prevention, strength, size and pump and all, but he refuses to take it because of the myths perpetuated about the stuff. he has no problems smoking and social binge drinking, though.
people who don't research their nutrition and choose to believe hearsay... aghh its annoying.

My first official Rant:
I really can't stand the rest of the sub-forums on these boards. There are WAY too many people arguing over things that don't really matter and asking questions that are totally insane. At the stage MOST people on this board are at, it doesn't matter if you get in 25 or 30 grams of dextrose post workout or if you do a 3 or a 4 day split. I really can't stand the amount of 18 year old kids on here talking about the bioavailability of chicken. Just eat the bloody protein and grow a bit.
No one on these boards except the keto brothren eat any substantial amount of vegetables and everyone in afraid of fruit (atleast we have just cause on keto). But when not in keto a plum or apple isn't going to destroy your diet. It will probably help it because you can satisfy sweet cravings without "cheat mealing" Nothing annoys me more than when you see someone posting about how you should avoid fruit like the plague and then their next post talks about the 4,000 calorie cheat meal they just whoofed down.
Rant over.
Wow a feel better. :-)

yea, my roommates were the same way with my whey/creatine/multi thing i had stashed away in the kitchen... Really, it wasn't all that much, yet they still thought I was doing gear or something.
And as far as the drinking goes, I know it is difficult for people to understand that alcohol just doesn't have the same appeal anymore... No big loss, really

I really need to start listening to myself when buying gas. Over the last week, the price in my town has gone from $3.69->$3.65->$3.63->$3.61 last night. I though "I should buy while it's low....... but maybe it will go just a tad lower tomorrow." Yea, didn't happen. Had to fill up today at $3.76. WTF!?
I reminded myself of why I hate carbs so much. I made some oatmeal with breakfast, don't ask me why, I hadn't planned on having my next carb meal until the 4th of July. Well, 7 hours later and I still have absolutely no appetite, yet am craving more carbs, and am bloated like hell

You know what's funny...gas prices keep going up in the US with crude oil over $140 a barrell, yet over here in Iraq, everyone is ****ing driving around in 2007-2008 Suburbans and any other gas guzzling vehicle you can think of (around base that is)...and gas is free....thank you US tax dollars...makes no sense to me...
But onto the Keto side of things, I've been doing it the past few days, and I have no idea if i am in Ketosis or not...it would take 2-3 weeks if I order ketostix online, so I can't check by that. Urine doesn't really smell and my breath doesn't smell odd, and I don't feel cold. I feel tired, unenergetic, light headed sometimes, but is there anything else I can check for? yesterday I ate about 30g of carbs and so far today i'm around 4-5g so I haven't been eating many...

Wow... Hope you're feeling better soon, mang. The percocet is no joke; hopefully you won't have side effects. I was prescribed percocet after surgery for a testicular torsion three weeks ago... Stuff made my fingers and toes feel all itchy, and it also made me sleepy... Then, to offset the itchy side effects, I had to take Benadryl, which also made me sleepy. I wasn't doing keto during the time, so the drugs and the carbs had me loopy the whole time.

So I'm feeling a little under the weather: fatigued, feverish, etc. Typical flu symptoms that I was lamenting about in an email to my father. He told me if I ate better I'd probably feel a lot better. He suggested I start eating cereal and orange juice again. I then pointed out that all the food I eat is in its most natural state, and is not comprised of a list of chemicals including hydrogenated oil and HFCS.
I guess the older they are the harder it is to convince them.

I have a few bikes but I like riding my Giant TCR1 around town and drivers seem to think I should ride on the sidewalks. No offense but my bike is more expensive that a LOT of the cars I see on the ride.

One of my Rants is that low carb/keto dieters are often guilty of the very thing that offends them from others: insisting that THEIR diet is the only good diet worthy of consideration. Personally, I have done both very low fat and very low carb. Each has its pros and cons but both can work well for long periods of time. In my own experience, nothing beats the very low fat diet for weight loss. If you don't have blood sugar issues and the carbs you eat are whole, healthy, non-processed carbs you can lose a considerable amount of body fat in a short period of time. The diet is so filling its almost impossible to overeat. I find I often lose too much weight when using a very low fat diet. In fact, I recently switched back to a much higher fat, low carb diet to prevent further weight/strenght loss. The problem with the very low fat diet is missing the important essential oils I get from salmon, sardines, nuts and seeds.....all fatty foods you can't have eating very low fat. The problem with the low carb diet, and the reason I only do it for 4 month or so before switching, is that you have to increase carbs at some point or your workouts and glycogen stores will be shot. Then I find myself eating more and more of the low carb foods for energy, which usually results in fat gain.
This brings me to my next rants: Idiots who insist that you won't gain weight as long as your carb and insulin levels are very low. BULL****! You see, fat is ALREADY FAT and doesn't need to be "converted" to fat as excess carbs do. It also DOES NOT need the action of insulin to find its way to the fat cells. It makes me sick when people say you need high insulin levels to gain fat. If that were true, our species would not have survived. A cave man living on the frozen tundra, eating nothing but meat and fat would not have been able to store the excess as bodyfat to insulate his body and get him through the times when food was unavailable...he would have starved or froze to death

I was actually just wondering about this the other day. How do you differentiate between the two? I am in ketosis according to my ketostix. How do I know if/when I am fat adapted?

When you feel you have as much high intensity energy as before keto. Most people struggle a bit with cardio in the first couple of weeks. When you start breaking personal bests on keto, you are fat adapted.

Just got my exams results back, I messed up pretty bad and failed in a definitive way. I expected it and the problem is not there tho.
What I know fear is how my dad is going to digest it (he was more into my studies than I was myself..), just told him and now just being around him is kinda awkward.
As some of you may know, I was planning on moving to the states (any state... just getting out of here) to study next fall because my dad finally got the picture, and now I dread he won't want to help me (pay..) for it.
I seriously haven't felt that bad in a long time, I don't know what the **** to do if I have to stay here, guess I'll get a job..
/end: wasn't really a rant, just felt like getting it out and don't know who I actually want to talk to this about.

Guess absolutely no beer for the next 8 weeks. Sigh.

First off I want to give you guys all the credit in the world, for you have a will power that I cannot understand. I thought I had good will power, but in order to keep a keto diet consistently longterm is definitely not for me.
I'm on my 6th day of my keto diet. I've been foggy, having a hard time sleeping, and having a hard time figuring out a variety of things to eat. I wanted to register my keto with the ketostix to make sure I was in before I started messing with my carbs to see how far I could push it while still being in keto. Last night I had a double cheeseburger, which had two slices of whole wheat bread, no HFCS, good stuff. Had some marinade and a little ketchup. I think a total of about 35g carbs for the meal. Sure enough, kicked me right out. I didnt register this morning.
I'm not living or dying by the ketostix, but man, that sucks.
but this stuff is rough, I love carbs.

This is what I always thought too. I just thought keto wasn't for me. I always felt terrible and thought the high fat foods were unappealing without carbs. A year or two later I just tried it again recently and it's completely different. I've done a lot of carb cycling with 25% calories from carbs, 25% calories from fat and 50% calories from protein and I think this got me partially fat adapted, so when I tried keto again I feel great, crave the foods and have tons of energy. It's way way way easier to follow than the high protein carb cycling I was doing before.
I recommend you at least keep trying keto until you become more fat adapted.

I had resolved to do it for 2.5 weeks as a test run. after I fell out of keto the other day I quickly fell back in on Monday, so really no harm done there. I was in the gym again shortly yesterday, (until I tweaked my back again), and I shot out 5 sets of weighted pull ups, at the weights I had been doing a week or so ago before I was on keto. At that time I couldnt complete some of the sets. Yesterday i was able to hit the full reps on every set including my heavy set.
It was strange, but it was like I had limitless energy. However outside of that its still like my mind is in a fog. I have however, dropped 8 lbs since last wednesday. So its definitely doing something, I'm assuming part of that is water, but I'm staying well hydrated, so hopefully its not too much water.

If I could I would already be in the states, I have enough miles (:D) to get a free ticket and have a little money saved. But the fact that I couldn't get a "good" job (no visa/permit) is going to suck.
Moving isn't really the issue, it's paying for college. And I fear that seeing how I failed here he won't want to.
