Stop the Presses! I really have a question that is not off topic.
I have upped my days working now that Chris quit his job. I am only able to do a full body workout 3 days a week (last week only twice to be honest.)
Well, Yesterday at the gym I could NOT do dumbell flys as usual and had to cut my weight in half from 20# down to a humiliating 10 pounds. (very discouraging)
My legs, back, shrugs, and core seemed the same... What is up with that?
I talked to one friend that thought maybe I did not eat enough the hour before working out (very possible)... but wouldn't that affect my entire workout? I actually increased weight for the leg press (from 190 to 210) and the back extension machine from 190 to 210 as well. Shrugs with 35# on each side up from 20# It was tough, but I did it.) Core was equally gratifying.
I did legs first, the hit the flys next... got frustrated, oh, and my bicep curls were weaker too, but not as bad. dunno... usually my DB flys are awesome and I really like them... is it normal to lose strength like this?
*grr*
I wanna PROGRESS not slip back.
Today, I can feel that my muscles overall are responding to the increased weight and less reps... but my delts are KILLING me... What is that about?
The muscle that I used a LOWER weight on are the sorest...
I feel like such a novice.

Did you do flat bench flys or incline?
Sometimes it's just one of those things that happens.
Some days I go forward some days I take a step back. As long as the number of days you go forward are more than the ones that you step back there is really no problem.

I do standing flys... Maybe I am using the wrong vernacular... I lift my arms out to the side up to shoulder level, then bend my elbows bringing the weight to my chest center, then back out and down slowly. That is one rep.
What else would you call that?

Sometimes you take a step back in order to step forward....
What you posted is very common....lots of things from diet to over training to misjudgment to lack of sleep to just not that particular muscles day....don't sweat it...
Okay, so as I am taking a step back... how do I make sure that I do take two steps forward next week?
I know I am not getting enough rest, I tend to wake up in the middle of the night to pee (TMI?) and then am not able to fall directly asleep again. It may be time to reintroduce melatonin to my regimine again.

I think I may have figured out my issue.
This week I have been working wound care, which is a LOT of rolling patients, lifting body parts and struggling to get wound vacs in place.
As I think about it, I am using my arms isometrically moreso and maybe that was a factor.
Who knows? I have a few days off... woo-hoo, we shall see what happens now.

Ding ding ding!!!! I think you've nailed it! Using your arms more might just have left your arms spent of energy.
Melatonin...where would i be without that lately...

The extra work and the Shift in training sequence are probably the cause. Just showed up first in your arms first as they are smaller muscles and maybe your weakest link. Kimberly, I love my wound vacs. They are a really major step forward in wound healing don't you think? I'll PM you a picture of my latest.

Kimberly, IMHO I think you are doing the right thing by not giving up on your body just because you are taking on an extra work load. This is a common thing to be experiencing. Anytime you change the things you do all day has an affect on your workouts. Your body has not adjusted to the change. Keep up the workouts and you should take a giant step forward after you get some rest.
