great thread!
for those who don't know, here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku) are the most basic rules for Haiku:
3-short lines
line one has to have 5 syllables
line two have to have 7 syllables
line three has to have 5 syllables
no rhyme or metaphor allowed
here's my stab at it:
sweat on my fingers
my forearms tensed and aching
my throat is dry

Chodan9 your off the charts in originality. I would suspect that your martial arts back ground has given you insight to Japaneese culture?
In English, haiku are usually written in three lines to equate to the three parts of a haiku in Japanese, that traditionally consist of five, seven, and then five on (the Japanese count sounds, not syllables; for example, the word "haiku" itself counts as three sounds in Japanese (ha-i-ku), but two syllables in English (hai-ku), and writing seventeen syllables in English produces a poem that is actually quite a bit longer, with more content, than a haiku in Japanese).
Bod-y-build-ing art, (5 syllables)
needs men-tal strength fo-cus, (7 syllables)
to a-chieve new goals. (5 syllables)
(total of 17 syllables)

Shibui (渋い, Shibui?) (adjective), or shibumi (渋味, shibumi?) (noun), is a Japanese word which refers to a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty. Like other Japanese aesthetic terms, such as iki and wabi-sabi, shibui can apply to a wide variety of subjects, not just art or fashion. Most translate to "simple and elegant".

Originating in the Muromachi period (1333-1568) as shibushi, the term originally referred to a sour or astringent taste, such as that of an unripe persimmon. Shibui maintains that literal meaning still, and remains the antonym of amai (甘い, amai?), meaning 'sweet'.

I lie awake waiting for you. As I lie on my bed, thinking about you, I feel
this strong urge to grab you and squeeze you, because I can't forget last
night. You came to me unexpectedly during the balmy and calm night, and
what happened in my bed still leaves a tingling sensation in me.
You appeared from nowhere and shamelessly, without any reservations,
you lay on my naked body. You sensed my indifference, so you applied your
hungry mouth to me without any guilt or humiliation, and you nearly drove me
crazy while you drained me. Finally I went to sleep.
Today when I woke up, you were gone. I searched for you but to no avail,
only the sheets bore witness to last night's events. My body still bears faint
marks of your enthusiastic ravishings, making it harder to forget you. Tonight
I will remain awake waiting for you...

Question for Bronzebird and anyone else that would know....
My knowledge of Japaneese is limited to what you would need to get through a Judo tournament. My limited uderstanding is that each syllable has its' own meaning of itself. Is that right? If that is correct wouldn't an English Haiku be limited to words that were either 1 syllable or where the word is a combination of 1 syllable words?

GM,
You are mainly correct. Each kanji is a word which carries its own separate meaning. The word itself may be one or more syllables ex: 山 is pronounced "yama"--two syllables--or "san"--one syllable--and means "mountain." An English haiku--to the best of my understanding--would have the words, whether one syllable, two or three (or more, as the case may be) in the traditional haiku pattern of seven, five, seven.
Did I explain that right? Maybe Bronzebird could weigh in on this...
