Morning guys

Morning dudes!!

Good Morning

Sounds like the fuel mixture is off. You should have two needles on that saw (H and M according to that diagram above), a high speed and a low speed. Sounds like you're running lean on the low speed needle.

Now, these type of carbs are VERY finicky. When you adjust the low speed to richen it up, you turn it OUT about 1/4 turn, no more, then retry. Now when you turn this one out, the high speed will get richer, which means it may gurgle or flood out when it starts running, so then you might need to lean out the top end. Make your adjusts on ONE needle at a time and never go more than a 1/4 of a turn. So start with the low speed, turn it in to seat it then back it out whatever spec says, MAYBE 1/2 to 5/8's out, then adjust from there.

These carbs and needles can cause you a GREAT deal of a headache. Before you even tinker with the needles, make sure that there's no air leaks because that will cause a goofy fuel mixture.

AH!

I'll try that when I get home!

Thanks Bro!

This is (was) my baby for many years. It's been in many tournaments. We lost a vehicle to tow it with so it sat for a year and as you can see in the pictures, it got weathered. To be honest with you, the motor is to big for this boat. We emptied the one gas tank and ran it on a half of one tank, no gear, boat pretty much empty. We topped out at 71. I thought I was going to get thrown out of the boat. Anyone else have a Ranger or a bass boat (Nitro, Skeeter, ect, ect)

we need to get that up and running brah. we have plenty of tow vehicles noa

Let me guess... At 71 she was Chine Walking (Bouncing back and forth from SB to Port?)

When that happens you have to either shallow up or deepen your trim... (The walk will tell you) Because if you just keep that throttle pegged and keep going... It will eventually catch too much drag on one of those chine walks, and then you get to be another PFD water fatality statistic.

Im glad ours falls later... I dont care for the velvet look of antlers on a buck, plus it is hot enough at the end of Sept let alone real early in sept.

I have not got my bow out either. Need to start shooting soon.

I thought about it last night.. I need to pull mine and shoot a little just for the heck of it.. Not sure if or how much I will bow hunt this year.

Up here the Bow Season opens around Grouce season (2nd weekend of Sept) and velvet is gone and the weather is PERFECT... Usually dry (Sometimes we get long rain systems, but not often) No bugs...Highs in the Low to Mid 70's.

One of the reasons I've been thinking about taking up Bow hunting is because it gives me a reason to spend more time in the forest at that time of year.

I will probably hunt the first couple days and that go out much until the rut. First couple days you usually see quite a few deer.

The Atlatl is responsible for more Dead animals that every gun, or arrow ever invented in the world combined...

They say that the deer population is exploding and is causing major problems.

The second largest white tailed deer concentration in the United States is just an hour north of me, and it's home range is spreading so fast that they're even showing up in town.

Deer routinely walk through my parking lot at work and my office is "In Town" and Town is a population of around 120,000 people.

Funniest thing I have ever seen (animal related) was at the place that I worked was a group of geese that would land and just walk around. Well, the office that was there was all glass so the bird could see itself in the reflection. Well, the bird thought that his reflection was an enemy and would start to peck the glass trying to kill the "other" bird. One time it pecked so hard that it knocked itself out.

Not in my area they have been having shoot a doe to get a buck for the last several years. My dad and I did not even see but a few deer all gun season last year.

With the bad winter I had for the amount of snow I can not see the population going up all that much.

Part of the problem CM might be running into, and no offense to the people of Wisconsin... But your DNR sucks!

The Ecologists have basically allowed the politicians in on every single level... And so now you essentially have Lawyers, and professional politicians dictating how the natural resources should be used.

The policys of the WDNR are set to "Make Money for the state first" and "Protect the natural habitat" second. (Because apparently since they have so much of it, what's a little less right?)

And as such it's completely affecting all the animal populations (Except the re-introduced Elk, which are thriving thanks to the Federally subsidized Ban on hunting them, which won't expire for another 25 years.)

*****

Up here you don't need a road kill permit... But if you hit a deer and want to take it you have to call the MNDNR... And there's some kind of post-Factor Tag application... That I think might impact your bag limit in the fall. (But don't quote me on it, as I've never had occasion to find out.)

Anyone got any fishing/hunting/outdoors plans for the weekend?

Let's hear em!

We have penciled in a trip down to San Diego to explore the big bay and maybe Mission Bay also. In SD bay we'd fish for bass, bonefish, croakers, bontio halibut or barracuda. Mission bay is good for bass and halibut mainly although I've caught a few oddballs there. We might stay overnight down there and check out the downtown scene, the incredible SD Zoo, Balboa Park and the museums or my various old haunts.

Going to look at a sweet center console on the way back. Guy's asking 8k, no idea what book value is, we'd try to get him down to 7 or high 6s even (Susie, honey, unbutton your top another button......just do it...)

what do you fellas think?

Hey Planet I'll take those odds any day. Some of the best fishing in fresh or salt is right before it storms, or even better when it looks like it's going to but never quite breaks, dont know why, but that's usually a great time to fish.

After a storm, however, whole nother story.

Yeah they were going around last year and marking the road kills so people would not pick them up and tag them with their doe tag so they did not have to shot a doe to get their buck.

He thinks that it's either the Carb adjustment like you said...

OR, that there might be a fuel filter inside the tank... That completely deteriorated and it wedged in the fuel line somewhere, and it's interupting the saw staying running. (I had it with me)

So if I doink around with the carb and it's a no-go... The saw is probably completely shot, and I'll have to buy a new one...

He tried selling me a $400 saw...

And if I have to clear land and build next summer... I kind of need a pro-grade saw... But I was hoping for more in the $200 range!

Yeah it's kind of interesting... When you think about it... Running a boiler on the small scale is "Green."

The Carbon from wood is part of the natural carbon cycle... Whether I burn it or not, that tree is part of the natural carbon cycle... .

Trees actually grow faster as Clean CO2 increases in the atmosphere. (Many Fossil fuels release CO2 with other stuff attached to them in chemical chains... Like CFC's and PCO's etc...

Not to mention, wood heat is currently cleaner than Coal-Electric and LP gas!

FUUUUUKK!

Left work early since it was so dead, and I wanted to spend some time on the saw.

Well sure enough... I got the oil all mixed... Even put in a splash of Gunk out fuel additive cleaner.

Adjusted the idle and the highs and lows per our discussion...

took some tweaking here and some tweaking there... A million little start and stops... Kept tweaking it... Actually have a blister from my wedding ring and the pull handle...

Got her started promisingly, gave it 3 good throttle pumps... and all of a sudden gas started pouring out of it all over me, and the saw killed as the fuel line shredded from being under real pressure for the first time in 21 years...

And there's no craftsman service center or parts in town anymore (Just closed down 2 months ago!)

So that's it for the saw... And apparently for the shirt I was wearing.

****

Gonna have to look into other alternatives... But it's not a total loss... I now know far more about chainsaws than I ever did before... And when I get the new or used one... And something gets a little out of whack... I'll at least have a better chance to be able to dick with it knowledgably!

Sucks... did you consider replacing the fuel line or is it not even worth it?

I talked to the guy at Powerhouse Tools... To replace the fuel line I'd have to box it, and ship it to Craftsman... And then there would be a $60-$80 fee.... For a $26 year old saw that hasn't been run in 21 years.

I think it's time we just embrace the Future:

I'm covered... I've been watching all of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies and taking copius notes... So I'm sure if/when I buy the new saw I can just walk out into the forest pull the cord, and spin around psychotically, pumping on the throttle, and the trees will just fall down!

:D

*****

Actually I've been around saws for a long time... It's just since I have never owned one... I'm never the guy with his hands on the actual saw. I'm always helping, or choking, or dragging... And then I'm a splitting maul artist...

So with this new saw... My Buddy Jerome is coming with us for our annual HS buddies retreat up to Chippewa National Forest... This year we're going to leave the family (Who let's us rent their cabin, because their son, my buddy teaching English in South Korea) let's us use his weeks share.

So to ingratiate ourselves, we're going to cut enough wood for ourselves for the week... But we're also going to leave at least a cord of split seasoned wood.

Jerome grew up in a family with a wood stove heated house... So I'm going to pretend I know nothing, and just be Jerome's Chainsaw apprentice for a week.

Kind of funny... Those of you who have been through some of my BBQ conversations know that I've been having a near impossible time getting fruit woods to smoke with.

So yesterday my wife plugged up the bathroom sink... So I sent her to hardware a few blocks from here with a list of what we needed. (I'm working on teaching her how this drain stuff works, so she gets an appreciation for how much it sucks for me when she just plugs up a drain for the hell of it.)

Turns out, I've scoured this town looking for fruit woods... And the greatest emporium of smoking woods... Is in the back corner of this little Hardware store in walking distance of my house!

Unfortunately they were out of Apple and Cherry... I already had some hickory (Which is light in flavor.) And some Mesquite Chunks (Which kick a lot of nuts in smoking.)

So she came back with two bags of burbon barrell oak. Supposedly it's from old southern burbon barrells that they ground up into chips...

So I'm starting with the burbon oak (Because the meat takes the most smoke early and then less as it goes...) Then dial up to Hickory... And then finish off with mesquite.

I'm also trying a Honey-Chili-Garlic rub this time... So I'm kind of excited!

Let me guess... At 71 she was Chine Walking (Bouncing back and forth from SB to Port?)

When that happens you have to either shallow up or deepen your trim... (The walk will tell you) Because if you just keep that throttle pegged and keep going... It will eventually catch too much drag on one of those chine walks, and then you get to be another PFD water fatality statistic.

oh yes, she walks alright. i'm not afraid of a lot of things but she has frightened me on a few occasions.

funny story, my buddy had a ranger so we would run them together all the time. water was white capping one day but we were full throttle regardless. i happen to look over and he hit this wave, sent the boat in mid air, i saw the prop spinning and everything. that was pretty scary

Nothing... Still clogged...

So I'm going to leave the chemicals over night... See if a miracle happens... And then tomorrow I get to tear the whole shebang apart...

Sucks though...

I just found out that my Dad is going in for heart surgery on Monday. (It's actually a minor procedure, not the chest cracker.) So I'm taking him to a regional church bazar tomorrow... Just sucks that I'll have to duck out early just so I can come home and play with acid and my wife's old hair wads!

I guess my Dad refuses to have anyone drive him or visit him (It's 3 hours from here.) He just wants to go, get it done... And come back 3 days later...

You know I started doing this as a means of giving something back... I think that spiritual understanding is only worth while when shared...

But my God... These guys are friggin' pussies.

I'm not talking about the guys that are a couple of weeks or a few months in... I understand how you can be an open wound then... As I very much was...

I'm talking about the guys who are 2-5 years in.

I just had a conversation with two guys who, are so locked into the 12 step process, that they've got a stick jammed so far up their ass that that I swear you could see it in the back of their mouth when they yawned.

They completely failed to understand that Addiction is about avoidance... So instead of using their Drug of choice to avoid conflict... They instead use a bunch of bull **** spirituality crap that they read on the interwebz to give them a bull**** excuse for avoiding life's problems...

No offense to guys on Step 11... But right now I friggin' hate 12 steppers!

I'm not sure what sort of pipes you have - but be careful leaving any strong acids or bases in your pipes... it could kill more then the clog.

My dad worked for a plumber and one thing the guy sweared by were "drain bladders" - basically a rubber bladder that you hook up to your garden hose and shove down the drain. When you turn the water on, the bladder expands forming an airtight seal in the pipe. There is a small hole at the end of the bladder which forces out a high pressure stream of water that usually will blast out the clog. You may want to consider this option as they are pretty cheap.

I just want to add that you gotta make sure you've screwed the thing on tight - this is typically a 2 person job because you always run the risk of getting water everywhere. I usually manned the spigot while my dad yelled at me to turn it on and off. ;)

Funny... I was actually thinking last night "Hmm... If I could just get a hose down there with some pressure!

Currently the chemical is still in the down pipe... Slowly grinding away on the clog and hopefully not the pipe... So at this point I've just gotta let it run it's course.

Sad that I've now had that talk 3 times with him...

But I guess this is the last straw before it's either "Death Watch" time or the Big Bad operation

He doesn't want me to go down there... He's going to take the VA bus down, and back... He said "The only way you'll even hear from me is if something goes wrong."

So I'm in the middle of answering all these questions about how much I bench and adding to stories my Dad is telling about my Macho Truck and cool boat. (Even he was over selling.)

My Mom and her old baby sitter (Who's pretty much legally blind) are standing behind me... My Mom goes to introduce me...

Well apparently the little old lady has some problems with depth perception, yet her hands are still fast like a friggin' ninja using the eagle claw strike.

All I know is I'm answering another weight lifting question my Dad posed to show off to his buddys... So I say "Yeah I rack pull 370... It's kind of a deadlift..." And I turn because my Mom tapped my shoulder to introduce me... All of a sudden this tiny little old 92 year old woman jabs her hand out in the Eagle Claw strike...

I turn just at the wrong time and she death jabs me right in the NUTS!

6'4" 255... 2 martial Arts... Years of football and weight lifting... And I got dropped like a sack of potatoes by a 92 year old 4'8" hunch backed little old lady!

But it doesn't seem to want to turn the corner from the trap to the wall drain pipe.

It's almost like there's something wrong with the air exchange of the bathroom or something?

Okay...

So I checked in my Egg Money... And add that to the B-day money my Dad slipped me...

And I can buy the low end Pro-Grade 16" Husqvarna Chainsaw...
I forget the model number... But it's got the Anti-Vibration, the saftey guard, primer, chain tightener dial etc...

Net cost to me (Not counting extra chain and bar oil) $25...

Or I could buy the 18 inch Poulan that's on the high end of the Home & Garden class... With Bar Oil and extra Chain for pretty much free.

****

So I think I'm going to go looking for the Cobra drain dealy (If this last gasp fails) and find out if I need to hire a plumber... Or buy the high end saw.

*But if I end up buying 5 wooded acres and the outdoor boiler... I'm gonna need that saw anyway!

LOL...

Yeah apparently you gotta watch out for those little old ladies and their Ninja Moves.

Clog is currently winning the battle still...

I'm going to reclear the water and chemicals from the trap...

Then put water in... Then do my Damdest to seal up the sink's over splash in the drain... So I can max out my compression... And plunger like Mad.

Once all of that fails... I'll look into the Cobra hose thing.

Currently we've adapted to life without a Bathroom sink...

And considering that this is the FIFTH TIME my wife has clogged it. (After 4 Kitchen Clogs, 2 broken toilet flanges, and countless bathtub clogs.)

At this point... I'm inclined to let it stay clogged for a while... To really let this whole "The house drains are not garbage cans" thing really sink for her.

Besides, right now my hands are so torn up from the chainsaw, the snake and the chemicals... That It like hurts for me to type right now!

Hey guys... After a quick scan I see Nainoas wife is at it again with the plumbing. :D

Anyway.. I got a bunch of work done for my mom this weekend. Put up some cabinets for her, finished putting up 2 spindled railings on her front porch, cut her grass, and organized her garage...

Just one thing though.... Hammer VS Thumb.... Hammer always wins... OWWWWWWWWWWWIEEEEEEEEE

What does she put down the drains that clogs them so bad?

Well if I knew the complete answer to that one even I would be more satisfied...

With the kitchen sink... She's always had garbage disposals and dishwashers... Neither exist in my house... So she's got a life time of "Let it go down the drain and hit the disposal grinder.

The bathtub is a clear matter of her not cleaning her hair out of the drain.

But the last time she jammed it up tight I took apart the entire bath tub drain system and really got it "Whistle Clean" so we haven't had any problems with it.

The bathroom sink though I can't get at the problem area... Which is where the pipe goes into the wall... So 70 years of no one ever being able to get at that one pipe and clear it has a lot of pipe plaque... And then she brushes her hair, and it goes down the drain.

There's this whole "Clean your brush out over the garbage 100% of the time" thing that she just clearly hasn't been getting...

We've had some pretty serious arguements over each plumbing aparatus that she's clogged...

And after each one, she gets a little better... Then she does it again a couple of months later... New arguement... And she gets a little bit better.

This time... I'm just going to let her suffer through this one for a while... Let her really digest this whole thing...

She's got this attitude of "Frack it, I don't want to deal with it!" Which really is more like "Frack it, I'll let Nainoa Deal with it."

CLEARLY every level of conversation to get her to be pro active about it, isn't working...

So I'm letting her experience the full brunt of the consequences of her actions.

Like yesterday, running the snake... She was my helper... She got to see every single wad of disgusting black ichor that came out on the tip of that snake...

None of this "I have to study..." No "But this is my favorite movie!"

She gets to Hand me the wrench... Pour out the fetid goo from the snake's rinse bucket... The whole 9 yards...

As I've been taking this approach with each plumbing project she screws up... I'm finally going from "Slightly decreased problems" each month to "No problems."

I will break her of this yet!

And why don't you just put a disposer in the kitchen sink (and maybe the bathroom one too ;))? They're easy to install and really are a godsend sometimes when cleaning up sloppy food messes.

I didnt hit it real high up... mostly by the nail...

Couldnt move the thumb for a while but it finally loosened upo. Throbbed all night and is still pretty sore. I did this on Saturday. Nail will probably fall off soon. I dont think I broke the tip of the finger, but not real sure... Pretty dadgum sore.. It went black and red instantly...

You should see what I did to my ex-wife a few years back when I was building my deck. She put her hand in the way as I went to set a nail and she put a finger right over the nail... I hit it so hard it blew out the side of her finger and shattered the tip....

I was supposed to be out of this house by now...

But then we decided to complete her degree. (13 months to go.) The added 15K per year she'll be bringing in will be HUGE... It just means more time living elbow to elbow, in an old house...

I don't want to put a bunch of upgrades into the house... Just so a year from now when I sell the place someone can scrap it, and bulldoze.

I had a similar thing happen to my foot...

After graduating college I was still looking for a job and working at the hardware store...

Went to go pick up some lumber for a project, with my buddy Spazz...

I'd been working with guys who knew how to handle lumber and big sheets for so long that I didn't think about it.

Didn't realize Spazz had never picked up a stud before, let alone never loaded a sheet of 1" plywood...

So it was a total surpise when we went to grab it and he slipped... Dropped the entire sheet of wood narrow rip edge down... 4 feet... BOOM right across my toes...

Splattered them like grapes... Blood and toe nails everywhere...

No Medical insurance...

God some pills and advice from an urgent care... And then just suffered through it for 6 weeks.

Good morning/afternoon fellas.

Can you believe we're into August already? I hope we all make the best of it, maybe make up for some lost time. We (most of us, from what I gathered) straight-up got ripped off weatherwise this year.

Had an OK weekend out here. Down to SD for a tour of the bay, out fishing off Redondo yesterday.

It was pretty cool in SD. After screwing around trying to fish out in the bay amidst the crazy traffic, we went over to the port area and stealthed the kayak around and through and under all the piers by the cruise ships and Midway aircraft carrier and such. That was cool. It was like being in a blue green labyrinth of caves and grottos, and then you emerge next to these massive ships....looking up at the sides of them like skyscrapers.

The words "Electric Grill" and "Good Steak" go together as well as words like "Grandfather" and "Hand Job."

Your First problem...

NEVER use Teflon coated surfaces for high heat applications.... It gives off a toxic gas, which will also be trapped into the meat... And using low heat to cook a steak... Is like Giving your wife a case of 2 cycle oil and a subscription to Hustler for an anniversary present.
(Hey what is the traditional gift for the 69th anniversary?) LOL
;)

Second... An electric gridle doesn't carry enough load to really drive heat into the meat... Without cooking your meat medium to well done.

*****

This doesn't mean that there isn't a smokeless garage solution to a rainy day though...

The Answer is a Cheap little Propane Camp stove ($9.99 is what I Paid for mine at Wal-Mart.)

And the friend you should always have somewhere in your kitchen... Cast Iron.

Now you could use a Standard 14" Cast Iron Pan (Properly seasoned of course.) Which is what I use because I just haven't cowboyed up for the double griddle, when one of my common camping buddies already has one.

But the Cast Iron Griddle... Where it's flat iron on one side... And Ridged on the other.

Simply use the ridged side...

*****

Just get the Ridged side RIPPING hot first... Whether it's by 10 mins in the oven at 450 degrees, and then bring it out with Welding gloves to the already burning camp stove in the garage...

Or simply keep it free from errant breezes and on the camp stove at high heat for 10 mins.

Treat it just like you would a charcoal grilled steak... 4 mins per side for medium rare.

Yeah this summer has been a pretty big bust... Even when weekends were good weather, my life schedule was in the way.

But really... Right now is kind of a ****ty time of year to be fishing as it is... Water temps have sent the best fish deep...

Instead I'm going to save up my energy and excitement for the late summer and Fall Bite...

Yea, I think you're right about this fall. The lakes have gone down around a foot but are still at a decent level. I did some playing around this weekend at the lake and the water literally felt warmer than the outside air-temp.

Lake levels are actually high here for the first time in 5 years... I mean it's not flood stage or anything... But some lakes are probably a foot high...

Compare that to last October, when they were 4 feet low!

But I've got something like 1.5-2 times the watershed to littoral down here than you do up there in that North of the Mississippi Water Table.

Well between Cast Iron and your charcoal grill you should have 90% of all you hight heat applications covered.

But really guys...

No matter what... Don't be using Teflon/non-stick anything for High heat... It really does give off toxic chemicals, that have been known carcinogens... And have straight up killed small pet birds in rooms where they've been used.

Tonight I've got one last ditch effort, before I try "The Cobra."

I'm going to take an old sock and wedge it into the slough drains... Refill the pipes... Then put on my "Best of Rocky" sound track... And just plunger like mad, while I listen to "Eye of the Tiger" and the "Training Montage from Rocky IV."

I think if I just picture Rocky running up a snowy mountain with a log on his shoulder, it might give me that last little bit of inspiration.

If after that and the Cobra doesn't work... I might just pull out the 8 pound maul, and beat the wall and pipe into submission!

That has the same use flare ups that a charcoal grill does... And will have the same pervasive meat smoke problem... So really... All you're getting rid of is charcoal smoke... Which other than light up is minimal...

Might as well just move the Charcoal grill closer to the garage door... Pull a fan out for good measure and save the $80 to $160.

The last 7 days of my life it's been nothing but people screwing things up, and walking away, comfortable with the knowledge that I'll fix it for them.

Like my Boss, who is working out of town... He didn't read my comments on an e-mail, and just looked at the file... Then since he didn't understand, he wrote me back a bunch of disrespectful bull**** about how I should have read his earlier comments!

WTF? Hipocrite!

So I'd had enough and laid into him.

It's sad... 10 years ago he used to be a man... Used to be a guy that everyone respected...

Now he's just a lippy pussy, that we have to take turns mopping up after!

Yeah I look at him and it serves as a reminder of how we have to always stay on guard to keep our character strong... Personal power kind of seems to Evaporate if not replenished by new challenges, either to our body, mind or soul.

I mean you look at 10 years ago he was active in the community... He was guy you could count on, always the first to stand up... Always trying to learn something new, always willing to tackle a problem head on...

Then after 2 divorces, he started this pattern of "Don't want to risk anything... I might get hurt." (Which I understand from the Divorce.) But it entered how he conducts himself in business and in person.

****

I have a saying when it comes to running a boat, or being a leader...

"You gotta walk the narrow line between having big brass balls, and ****ting bricks coward."

If you're too confident, you blunder into situations you didn't see coming... And if you're too scared, you'll hesitate and miss the right opportunity.

He just keeps hesitating and over analyzing, and in general giving himself a nasty case of what I call "Think Yourself Stupid."

Now 10 years of choices like that... He's gone from being a Starting Quarterback in the Football Game of life, to being a Punter who talks tough.

My wife and I bought a new mini van fully equipped with the soccer mom sticker on the bumper. :D

We have my wife's 2001 Honda Civic with 93k miles on it and we also have my 98 Ford F150 with 165k. Both vehicles are in good shape. My wife's is in a little bit better shape than my truck.

We could dump about 3-400 dollars in my truck and have it back to fighting shape.

We have to sell one of the vehicles. Which one would you sell/keep for my vehicle?

I only drive about 15 miles to work so fuel efficiency is not a huge problem

What's wrong with the truck to the tune of 3-4K?

Of the 3 vehicles, it's pretty close between the life of the Civic, and the remainng life of the Truck...

But if the 4 Wheel drive still works, the tranny is good and the engine still runs, the truck is still worth 2 Grand...

When the Civic comes to the end of it's life... It's worth a Max of $500.

So if that $3-4K is in the power train or the 4 wheel drive...

Then I say get rid of the truck... Because then it's money coming off the final trade in value.

*****

At the same time... Can you "Haul Stuff" in the van.

I mean if you get rid of the truck and you need to get lumber/firewood/a new couch/a new freezer...

Does the van have any capacity to handle this?

My gut says sell the pickup. If you ever desperately need one you can always rent one for the day real cheap, if you ever have second thoughts abt selling it altogther, well lets be honest, another 10 yo truck that needs work aint gonna be hard to find.

But with a new van and cheap-to-run civic no sense hanging on to an old truck, I'd figure. But it comes down to which ones you need and use the most too, which I don't know the outlines of.

Thanks for answering. I think my truck would require around 3-400 dollars. Everything on it is still solid. Needs some front end work and the air conditioning needs to be recharged. Other than that, it is a solid vehicle. I think the van can hold some stuff. If we had to buy a new refridgerator or something along that size we would not be able to haul it with the van. things slightly smaller would fit but not something as big as the refridge or a couch. I think that I may be holding on to the truck because it was my first vehicle that I bought and paid for. It has been dependable as anything.

Okay... So if it's not power train... What's keeping you from just parking the truck and using it for hauling, or for the niceness of having a 4 wheel drive vehicle when that rogue blizzard piles in off the great lakes, and you've gotta get that kid with a fever to the doctor's office.

Or put a plow on the Front and never have to shovel the driveway again!

*Up here a 4 Wheel drive vehicle in the family is a Survial Tool, that is a calculated risk to be without.

*My Buddy recharges his F-150 AC, and said he'd do mine for $10. (F-150 AC units burn through Freon pretty quickly, in general.)

All that being said... If you HAVE TO sell one... Sounds like the truck is the lean towards vehicle... It just means you'd have to deal with the pain of driving a Civic or a Minivan!

Very good point. I think me hanging on to the truck is out of the sentiment that it was the first vehicle that I bought and paid for, it is mine, I brought it into the marriage, it is my vehicle kind of thing. May sound strange, but it is my vehicle that if I spill something on the floor board I don't have to answer to anyone about it. :)

My wife is in the thinking that if it is sitting around and we can get some cash for it then we should get rid of it. Also, the whole having 3 vehicles on the insurance etc. I would like to keep it for the reasons in my post to FlyingV. I am leaning towards selling it to someone. The factor that sits in my mind is what if I could get 250k miles out of it??? Plus it is good for that occasional haul.

Well it's not a "What-If" As long as you take care of it... It should die around 225-250K... As my buddy's Dad (An old logger, trucker and construction worker) told me "If your F-150 dies before 200,000 miles... You know you didn't take good care of her!"

With my F-150... When she hits the 150-175 mile range, I plan to keep her... Put a plow on her ($1200 for a modest quality plow) and then buy a new(Used) truck or family SUV etc...

Then Sonja (My Current Red Truck) gets used to plow, ice fish, and haul.

*Now granted in my life, there's a lot of Hauling to be done... Always a need for an ice fishing truck, and well Plow... That's obvious.

Once she hits 150K... The amount you'll get trading her in pretty much plateaus.

The Insurance jack (Unless you've got a problem with bus passing) ;) Shouldn't be that bad at all...

The Minivan will be the expensive thing... Followed by the Civic... And an old truck (3rd Vehicle) under Multi-car would be cheap.

^^^^Now that's for "My Situation" If you live in the city, never hunt, never fish, never pick up lumber for home projects, Never transport fire wood and don't tow a boat or camper ever...

Meh...

Why the Frack then did you buy the truck in the first place???

I hear ya...

Being a big guy all my life, I always get asked to help people move...

But now that I own a full size truck... Those numbers have tripled.

Hell I've even helped my Mother in Law's sister move!

Ultimately though... It's like my friend said "We all know that when you need help moving that it's going to be worse than the 10 worst hell moves of all time combined."

You think about it... My Wife and I own a full life's amount of furniture and stuff each, both in the house and in storage... I've got a ton of tools & Appliances... A full friggin' Oly Gym... A full Art Studio of equipment... 2 Full Computer labs, All my lawn equipment...

And Yes... I'm taking all the cords of split wood with me when I go!

The problem these days is that they try to get too specific...

If you spend some time watching and learning about the weather... Then you can take basic info and make basic assumptions.

I mean if Tuesday is saying "South Winds... High 90, High Humidity." And Wednesday is "Northwest winds, High 78, Moderate to Low Humidity." Then you know at some point, probably around sundown on Tuesday that an ass kicker of a storm is going to push through.

No one except God can predict where a thunderhead cell is going to move in the heat of summer.

But hey at least we get to see it coming...

Some of the shore line areas have to try to guess what will happen when a system comes on shore...

I posted this on Old School...

While my parents raised me together, they lived in separate homes for all but the last 10-11 years... They got married for the first time when I was 24...

Now they're in their 60's. (Actually my Dad just turned 70.)

My Dad is in the hospital recovering from minor heart surgery. (He might need major surgery... But he's trying to exhaust every option.)

The doctos say that there is currently a 1% mortality rate for this operation... It's more that adjusting to the new Meds that will take him a while to get on his feet.

I guess tomorrow he's having some kind of electro shock procedure on his heart.

So my Mother just called me... She said that she feels it's time for her to leave, and continue on with her life, and my Dad should move in with me... And when my wife and I buy our new house in year or so... She will donate $40,000, so that we can buy a little bit bigger of a house, so my Dad can have his own space to.

I guess it kind of works...

He's getting on in age and health...

My Wife already works in Elder care, and is advancing her degree (Due to graduate in a year, and we buy the new place.)

My Parents really only get along because they both had health needs... My Mom's health is on a massive upswing!

My Wife previously discussed taking my Dad in "Just in case" something happened to my Mom.

My Mom wants to go live with her sister & friend down in Iowa.

The whole damn idea kind of works...

Sure there's complications... Like actually telling him she wants to leave...

Which I made her promise wouldn't happen until he's back on his feet.

And he'd have to deal with a screaming kid or two.

And I guess I'd have to take in his cat... Along with my two cats... Which would kill and eat it.

Holy Crap... Am I really prepared to be taking care of my Dad, with my wife in tow... While raising a family.

Seems like it was just yesterday that I was 26 years old and having crazy Hardcore porno sex with random chicks, and just seeing my parents on the holidays.

So...

Uh...

Anybody have any advice?

Holy Crap... Am I really prepared to be taking care of my Dad, with my wife in tow... While raising a family.

Seems like it was just yesterday that I was 26 years old and having crazy Hardcore porno sex with random chicks, and just seeing my parents on the holidays.

So...

Uh...

Anybody have any advice?

I'm assuming then that (at least the last few years) that their marriage has been one of convenience rather than of true love. Reading previous posts about your mother, it seems like she's a pretty strong lady and goes where she pleases. If the spark of love is indeed gone and she has no desire to rekindle it, then there probably isn't much you can do to change that (a big IF, though - make sure that IF is true). It's a shame to see a family split, but this seems to be more and more common today.

If the way you outlined is the way it's going to play out, then you actually have one of the better situations one could ask for. Let's go over the challenges:

1) making some "living space" for your dad. CHECK. Sure it's a little tight now, but within a year or so you were planning on moving into a larger house anyway, and your mom is willing to pay a substantial amount to help out.

2) getting the consent of your spouse. CHECK. Since your wife has already talked about it, there is no uncomfortable broaching of the subject down the road. It also sounds like she is somewhat in favor and has some medical training to help with some home care that may be necessary.

3) caring for your mother. CHECK. Sounds like both her physical and financial health are in good shape and she is planning to move in with other family/friends that can help look after her needs as well. I think (IIRC) that you are an only child, so technically you have the burden of caring for both parents, so your mom's willingness to move in with others to help take this burden off of your plate (at least for the short term) is a blessing to help you focus on your more immediate needs of your father.

4) adjustment of lifestyle. Sorta-Check. You didn't talk too much about how this will impact your personal life and free time activities. Just be prepared to show some flexibility with your recreational plans, as your father's needs may become more pressing and time consuming.

Those are a few that I thought of, and I'm sure it's not a comprehensive list, but you really do have a decent situation to work with. 1, 2 and 3 are really the biggest concerns, as many other issues can be worked through, but if those aren't lined up right, it makes things really difficult.

Don't worry about future incidentals like pets getting along or how your dad will get along with future children. Those may or may not be issues, so you can't worry too much about them right now. Focus your energies on the real issues at hand, lest you become overburdened with too many "what if" scenarios.

Damn... I just got word that my Dad's Complications have taken his mortality chances have bumped up from 1% to 5-7%.

He still refuses any visitors.

I wouldn't put much stock in medical percentages.

Each person is a unique case, and no past mortality rates can be accurately applied to a new patient.

About two months ago, a friend of mine suffered a massive heart attack and was basically comatose with about zero brain function. The doctors and neurologists gave him a zero percent chance of living off of life support; his wife was going to make the tough decision to 'pull the plug' on him. Yet he started to make slow progress day by day and continued to amaze the doctors. As of yesterday he is in a rehab facility and is able to talk, walk, eat, take stairs, use a computer and remember almost all the things that were important to his life. The man that had "zero percent" is almost back to his old self again.

The power of the human spirit cannot be measured by medical science. Keep yourself positive, and as you are able, keep your dad positive. That's the best thing that you can do for him right now.

Pikie Bay Hangover Ratings :D :D

1. star hangover

No pain. no real feeling of illness. You slept in your own bed and when you woke up there were no traffic cones in there with you.

You are still able to function relatively well on the energy stored up from all those vodka and Red Bulls.

However, you can drink 10 bottles of water and still feel as parched as the Sahara.

Even vegetarians are craving a Cheeseburger and a bag of fries.

2 star hangover:

No pain, but something is definitely amiss. You may look okay but you have the attention span and mental capacity of a stapler.

The coffee you hug to try and remain focused is only exacerbating your rumbling gut, which is craving a full English breakfast.

Although you have a nice demeanour about the office, you are costing your employer valuable money because all you really can handle is some light filing, followed by aimlessly surfing the net and writing junk e-mails.

3 star hangover:

Slight headache. Stomach feels crap. You are definitely a space cadet and not so productive.

Anytime a girl or lad walks by you gag because the perfume/aftershave reminds you of the random gin shots you did with your alcoholic friends after the bouncer kicked you out at 1:45 am.

Life would be better right now if you were in your bed with a kebab and a litre of coke watching daytime TV.

You've had 4 cups of coffee, a gallon of water, 6 chicken nuggets and a litre of diet coke yet you haven't peed once.

4 star hangover:

You have lost the will to live. Your head is throbbing and you can't speak too quickly or else you might spew.

Your boss has already lambasted you for being late and has given you a lecture for reeking of booze.

You wore nice clothes, but you smell of socks, and you can't hide the fact that you (depending on your gender) either missed an oh-so crucial spot shaving, or, it looks like you put your make-up on while riding the dodgems.

Your teeth have their own individual sweaters. Your eyes look like one big vein and your hairstyle makes you look like a reject from a second-grade class circa 1976.

You would give a weeks pay for one of the following - home time, a cheeseburger and somewhere to be alone, or a Time Machine so you could go back and NOT have gone out the night before.

You scare small children in the street just by walking past them.

5 star hangover:

You have a second heartbeat in your head, which is actually annoying the employee who sits next to you.

Vodka vapour is seeping out of every pore and making you dizzy.

You still have toothpaste crust in the corners of your mouth from brushing your teeth.

Your body has lost the ability to generate saliva, so your tongue is suffocating you.

You'd cry but that would take the last drop of moisture left in your body.

Death seems pretty good right now. Your boss doesn't even get mad at you and your co-workers think that your dog just died because you look so pathetic. You should have called in sick because, let's face it, all you can manage to do is breathe ..... very gently.

6 star hangover:

You arrive home and climb into bed.

Sleep comes instantly, as you were fighting it all the way home in the taxi.

You get about 2 hours sleep until the noises inside your head wake you up.

You notice that your bed has been cleared for take off and is flying relentlessly around the room.

No matter what you do you now, you're going to chuck.

You stumble out of bed and now find that your room is in a yacht under full sail.

After walking along the skirting boards on alternating walls knocking off all the pictures, you find the toilet.

If you are lucky you will remember to lift the lid before you spontaneously explode and wake the whole house up with your impersonation of walrus mating calls.

You sit there on the floor in your undies, cuddling the only friend in the world you have left (the toilet), randomly continuing to make the walrus noises, spitting, and farting. Help usually comes at this stage, even if it is short lived.

Tears stream down your face and your abdomen hurts. Help now turns into abuse and he/she usually goes back to bed leaving you there in the dark.

With your stomach totally empty, your spontaneous eruptions have died back to 15-minute intervals, but your body won't relent.

You are convinced that you are starting to turn yourself inside out and swear that you saw your tonsils shoot out of your mouth on the last occasion.

It is now dawn and you pass your disgusted partner getting up for the day as you try to climb into bed. She/he abuses you again for trying to get into bed with lumpy bits of dried vomit in your hair.

You reluctantly accept their advice and have a shower in exchange for them driving you to the hospital.

Work is simply not an option.

The whole day is spent trying to avoid anything that might make you sick again, like moving.

You vow never to touch a drop again and who knows for the next two or three hours at least you might even succeed.

So...

Uh...

Nainoa,

I can give you all kinds of advice on this as my MIL as lived with me and my wife for about 5 years. But, the last time I gave you advice I stuck my foot in my mouth. :) Anyway, look real hard at #'s 2 and 4 of Iceman's advice and imagine the worse case scenarios because it will most likely happen.

Yours and your wife's ENTIRE life will be dictated by the needs (and wants) of your father...you can take that to the bank.

Edit...just read your next post. Sure hope your father gets better.

Sounds like his dad don't have any other options? Also sounds like you've already accepted the responsibility. I would do it with no questions asked. He's your dad and go forbid, if something happened and he passed, you'll slap youself over and over again for not being there when he needed you.

Thanks Bro!

I hear ya on the Keep Positive Thing.

I often say "I'm one third Christian, one third Buddhist, and one third Medicine Man." As such I try to keep mindful to keep positive energy flowing through and out of me... Mostly because I've noticed that I'm also sensative to people with a lot of Negative energy... And who needs that crap... So you gotta stay on Guard.

Looking back and the people I've known in my life, some who were dealing with family members who had long term illness. (Cancer/Aids.) I've come to understand that this is a Marathon.

My Dad is Running the Health Leg of the Marathon and I'm running the spiritual leg of the Marathon.

I think one of the reasons I was for this idea right out of the box, is just the positive change in him when I show up...

I have a lot of times when I come over, and he's locked in the house and didn't hear me knock... So I Have to go to a window in a room he's in and knock... And just watching him walk around... Dejected like an tired old man... Then he sees me in the window, and he's got a bounce in his step!

Like my Mom even said "He's doing his best, when you're around... Just your presence makes him happy and proud."

Plus my Dad is "Tired of this old house!" and wants something new.

*****

Financially, what I think I'll do is use the 40K my Mom will give me to add to the downpayment on the new house... Then when we go to sell my Dad's house (Which will take time and work) I'll put 40K of that into a fund CD, or annuity or something... As a back up fund for my Mother.

*****

As for my free time...

You know... These days I've had a lot of stuff changing in me in that regard...

I've noticed that I receiver more joy from helping out than I ever did before... It really truly genuinely pleases me to serve other people who need it. (And pisses me off when I have to baby sit people like co-workers, who just want to be lazy.)

I mean really... If you're "Making the Best of it" while you and your loved ones are taken care of...

I think that's probably the best any man can hope to do in this life.

At this point the biggest concern is the surgeries...

Todays procedure is supposed to change the whole landscape of the problem, for the better...

But if it doesn't... It means Open Heart Surgery, and that's going to have some special needs.

If this works though... My Dad would basically need people to live with for psychological and emergency reasons... For a projected 5 years.

He's completely mobile, and totally healthy in all ways except for the heart thing... And other than having "Sleepy Periods" his mental faculties are sharper than 9 out of 10 people I know. (I don't think I could beat him at Jeopardy if I had no time limit and a box of encyclopedias!)

No need to make any decisions until you see how he does after the surgery. My MIL was on her "death bed" for about 5 months...that was 4 years ago. He may be as frisky as ever after he comes home.

One of the positives of MIL living with me is that I spend alot more time with my Dad since my wife doesn't get to do many leisure time activities anymore.

.

Yeah their marriage is totally one of convenience...

I actually put in a ton of work talking with both of themto keep their marriage working...

In some odd twist, I'm more emotionally aware than my parents are...

They're both COMPLETELY opposite people...

My Mom is creative (Artist & aspiring writer), but very crude, yet extroverted and has an 84 IQ. She's incredibly generous, but is completely devoid of Empathy. (Literally if she saw a person sitting on the corner crying while holding a dead baby, my Mom couldn't figure out if the woman was crying cause she was sad, or happy because it meant she could date again!) Which in another odd twist my mother is also very spiritual, in her own Christian Mystic way.

My Dad is very straight laced, very eloquent, self educated, and intelligent... He's got a great sense of humor... Very tight with money... He tends to be very introverted until he really gets comfortable with someone... And he's so empathic that he can tell a lot about a person just from a few conversations.

Combine the two... And I got "The best of both worlds." Hence why I'm such an ecclectic.

But individually... They're both "Incomplete People."

They actually broke up, and had "One Last roll in the hay" which is when I was concieved.

As such they were "Together" for the purposes of raising me... But Separate in all other ways.

Growing up... I can't remember them saying "I Love You" to each other the way my wife and I say it to each other.

They got married to watch out for each other's health, to combine insurances and cost of living... But also to provide my Dad with companionship.

Since my Mom retired, and has improved her health and had her surgeries, and embraced her christian mysticism thing... She's been "Going her own way."

Further and further she distances herself, leaving him alone... To the point where now she kind of treats him like an unwanted burden (A feeling I've known before)... And she wants to have one last adventure in her life.

Picked up a couple of old possibly antique fly rods yesterday.... doubt they're worth much but I am curious about them....

One is just the rod (no reel) and the only marking I can barely make out says 'Betts fishing' I believe.

The other rod has no markings but the reel is marked with 'Sold by Sears Robuck & Co.' 'Simpsons - Sears LTD' '324.28990' 'PAT. 2-175-7682-303-732-2830-977 nos.' It's hard to read the Pat. Number so it may or may not be right. The reel is not manual you pull a lever and it reels itself in.

Both rods look pretty old, are two piece, and are bamboo I believe.

I bought both of them for 35$.... anybody got any idea where I can get some info on them? I'm still searching and not having much luck :o

Well you guys have heard me talk about my dreaded co-worker that I've dubbed "Super B*tch."
And this hag's karma is a black filthy thing.

Yesterday she pretty much jacked up the price on some products she sold to an old folks home...

So get this... There's a "Casino Bus" for seniors, that will pick you up at your home...

The number for it is just like hers... Except the last two digits are reversed.

Well apparently one little old lady decided to rally a bunch of her senior friends for a casino trip... Learned about the casino bus... But got the number wrong, when she gave it to all of her friends...

So now Super B*tches cell phone is ringing non stop as like 50 old people keep calling her asking for a ride to casino... And some of them are "Around the bend" so they keep mistaking the phone number correction and calling back.

It's great... She's having the **** fit to beat all **** fits as I type this!

I imagine you've tried Googling it. You might also try searching thru a flyfishinh news group, I think the primary one is

rec.outdoors.fishing.fly

also look in

alt.fishing
rec.outdoors.fishing.fly.tying
rec.outdoors.fishing

You can search old posts and threads using Google Groups, using terms like "Sears" "Betts" "(patent#)" and see what you find. It can be very time consuming but there's good info in there.

http://groups.google.com/group//topics?hl=en

So if you don't find an answer, it's easy to post a question in a news group and see what the Experts have to say. You can do that, and also browse messages and threads, with either Outlook or Outlook Express. If you want to try this and hit any snags, lemme know.

So now Super B*tches cell phone is ringing non stop as like 50 old people keep calling her asking for a ride to casino... And some of them are "Around the bend" so they keep mistaking the phone number correction and calling back.

See I don't believe in doing stuff like that...

I think the universe is literally wired to help those who help others, and harm those who harm others... It's just that since we're creatures of such objective thinking... We often don't understand the cause and effect, until usually, in Hind-sight.

Over the course of my life, the people who have been my enemies and have done me wrong... Look at their lives now, and they're isolated, or bitter, or burdened, or beaten savagely by bad luck...

Yet as I get older, I'm surrounded by more and more love, laughs, smiles and well wishes...

There's a reason for that... I attend to the positive purpose of my life, while they seek to bring other people down to their's... And in the end... Bad people get what they've earned... It's just not by anyone else's measuring stick!

Eddie wanted desperately to have sex with this really cute, really hot girl
In his office...but she was dating someone else.

One day Eddie got so frustrated that he went to her and said, "I'll give
You $100 if you let me have sex with you."

"The girl looked at him, and then said, "NO!"

Eddie said, "I'll be real fast. I'll throw the money on the floor, you bend
Down and I'll finish by the time you've picked it up."

She thought for a moment and said that she would consult with her
Boyfriend...so she called him and explained the situation.

Her boyfriend said, "Ask him for $200, and pick up the money really fast.
He won't even be able to get his pants down." She agreed and accepted the proposal.

Over half an hour went by and the boyfriend was still waiting for his
Girlfriend's' call. Finally, after 45 minutes, the boyfriend called and asked
"What happened...?"

Still breathing hard, she managed to reply, "The bastard had all quarters!"

I usually manned the spigot while my dad yelled at me to turn it on and off. ;)

Yeah, no way is that 202 pounds...

Based on the Muskys that I've been the helper for, I'd guess that's a 65-70 pound fish. I could see more, if that guy is like a 6'5" body builder but it ain't over 100 pounds!

The world record Alligator Gar, which I watched the video of was 279 pounds... And it took everything that two Gar Anglers (One was my size) had, just to get it over the rail of the boat, and lay it on the floor... And to get it out of the boat, they hap to tip the boat over!

They must have put it on a lip weigher, and some ass bag was leaning on it, or the fish thrashed and they didn't know how to use it.

If someone stood face to face with me with that picture in their hand and told me it was a 202 pound fish, I'd knock them over, pin them down and piss in their face, for telling such a bold faced lie.

Although this does remind me about how much I wanted to go sturgeon fishing this fall or next spring!

Yeah this has been a pretty low fishing year for me also... Weather, scheduling problems, and gas prices have really been a tripple whammy for me.

It looks like I'm going to take my wife smallie fishing from shore on the river this weekend... Otherwise... Nothing...

Until my trip on the 18th to 24th...

Bringing my boat up to take it over to a near by Musky and Walleye lake... Then there's a pontoon on the shore of the lake we're staying at that we're going to take crappie fishing... I was up there on the 4th and while you had to sort for them... There were 10 inch crappies coming back at the end of every outting.

No Stripers this far north... They start showing up an hour south of here, but they're small (Apparently they need a little more growing season than we get.)

****

Though these days I'm getting a Sturgeon Itch... And I'm thinking about adding big lake trout to my menu.

*Recently my wife and I have been fresh curing and hot smoking Salmon... And I tell you bro's... The only way I can describe it is "Fish-Bacon."

Hickory (With a splash of mesquite) smoked Salmon has the smokeyness goodness of Bacon... But the healthy lean and essential oils of Fish.

So I'm thinking about catching some Lake trout (Which has enough oils to handle smoking) and give it a whack.

So now speaking as a guy who might be building a house in the country next year...

When you build up the road bed for your driveway, how bad is it to put in culverts at the low points?

I have guys who can do dirt work... But while they're strong backed and get equipment, they aren't exactly engineers!

psychowolverine
08-07-2008, 09:16 AM
im not sure what you mean exactly N..

I put in my culvert and it was a piece of cake... There was a ditch in existence and I just dug out the bed a little for a good base for the culvert to sit in and then poured the gravel over top.

The one thing I may suggest, is going with something bigger than crusher run. Some people use 3" and I think that may be to big really...

Also, use something for the sides of the drive around the culvert. Dont let the gravel be the sides.. I used food sized rock to frame it in so to speak.

If you can avoid any incline from the road to the drive entrance, that will be good too....

I had some pics of what I did with the big rocks on the side of the drive at the culvert, but must have deleted them.
