You're right. Winter down here is not bad at all. I can usually wear a light jacket throughout winter.

Our home was horrible last summer. Very hot. The AC never could keep up. This summer we installed ceiling fans throughout the house and it has made a tremendous difference. I use to set the AC on 72 at night. Now we sleep comfortably at 77 with the fans on.

We use the ceiling fans extensively in our home as well.

LOL...

It's because you're watering it with City Water...

Your Municipality must use clorination?

Go to the grocery store and buy a Couple gallon jugs of Spring water... And it should at least stop it...

Though I don't know what to do about the brown tips that are already there????

I figure that's dead tissue so it can be trimmed off or allowed to fall off on it's own.

You happen to know how the Cl affects plants? I'm very curious as to why would it only affect the tips of the leaves.

Oh yeah. I remember the bugs from when I lived in Gainesville. Palmetto bugs so big they rent them out for 'pony' rides at kids birthday parties, kids jumps on its back and they lead it around in a circle by the antenna.

I have learned that the very hard way. I treat her good now. I have about 166k on her now. I am not sure on how much longer she will last. We are thinking of downgrading :D and buying a van for our kids. I told my wife not to talk to loudly when she is talking about my Ford. Makes my truck mad. :D

My Buddy's 1998 F-150 is at 230K, and still runs fine... And it's spent half it's life towing heavy loads, driving on gravel & mud... Then in the winter out on the blistering ice sheets...

She's just now starting to show signs of wanting to go south... But even that is because he drove it nose first into a resevoir pond, and he got the coils wet... So now the coils have been failing him and he has times where he drives on 6 or 7 Cylinders for a week before replacing it.

I have yet to meet an F-150 that crapped out sub 200,000 miles.
*Now Granted that requires routine maintence...

None of this "Gee I'm only 1000 miles over my oil change... None of this "I'll wait till I hear a grinding sound to get the brakes done... None of this "I have no clue what condition my air filter is?
And she gets a change of the radiator fluid to -35 every Fall...
She get's 5w30 every winter or she gets a grill cover.
(Actually I run 5W30, Mobile 5000 Synthetic and a Wicks 5000 mile filter year round now!)

And when she needs plugs and filters you spring for the good ones and not the cheapest that will get you through...
*And for Christ sake spring for the $1.79 oil treatment at the oil change... And Give her a little injector cleaner every 20-30K!

You take care of an F-150 like you would a loyal pet, and she'll take care of you to the tune of 200K.

Hell if she dies on you before 200K, you can pretty much just assume that you treated her wrong or neglected her at some point in her life.

What it is... Is the Clorine, Flouride... And there's something else... I think it's Boron, but I could be wrong???

They slowly build up in concentration in the soil over time, and start poisoning the plants ability to move the water around...

Water it with good natural water, will over time wash those toxins out, as "Healthy Minerals" replace it.

Cool, thanks. Makes sense. It occurs to me that in human nutrition too, inorganic mineral salts are, for the most part, useless also. A few exceptions like magnesium oxide. But this is why the minerals in spring water or so-called mineral water are mostly useless, too; they're in inorganic form. Minerals from solid, whole foods are complexed with amino acids or other organic compounds so its relatively easy for the body to break those chemical bonds and liberate the mineral into ionic form. At that point the body can use it. With most inorganic minerals, like, say, the zinc oxide in cheap multis, the bond between the mineral and its cation can withstand digestive acids, so it doesn't break, and becomes just another bit of waste to be excreted. But inorganic minerals can be hard for the body to excrete for the same reason they are hard to absorb; they are hard for the body to manipulate chemically.

I put 80k on my truck in about 2.5 years Ann Arbor MI for my job at the U. It is starting to show signs of wear and tear. I have loved that vehicle with all my heart. I can honestly say that I have had the oil change every 3k, new tires and such. I was rear ended pretty bad about 4 years ago and where the rear end was totaled, frame bent etc and the dealer fixed it all. The body does not have any rust it yet except where some jackoff keyed it.

Well see I was thinking it's more a kin to how Fish have Mercury in them... Because we burn materials like Coal, which has Trace Mercury in it... And that Mercury goes up into the atmosphere... Then covalently bonds with rain... Which then falls onto the Land and drains, or into the sea/lake/river... Where the fish slowly take it in as our waters become ever more poisonous to all living things each year...

Hence why I keep saying "Hey Guys... If you think oil is bad... Wait 50 years, and the fight for Clean Water is going to make Oil look like 2 fat kindergartners arguing over who gets to snort the last of the Smarties!"

Hey that's cool... Don't know how much I'd like it for those times when I'm ice fishing, or I notice that there are timberwolves about and prefer to just get the hell out of there at some speed faster than "Pedal my ass off!"

****

My Friends and I have actually been (80 Proof) talking about going together on this:

http://www.miesoutland.com/new_vehicle_detail.asp?sid=09744379X7K22K2008J3I45 I21JPMQ857R0&veh=55591&CatDesc=Utility%20Vehicles&ModelYear=2008

Then enclose it for ice fishing season...

It's becoming less and less fun to drag 200 pounds of gear for miles on end during the early season when you can't just drive the truck out...

Or when we're "Up Nort" on the small lakes.

What are popovers?

Nainoa

What are popovers?

Popovers are a type of bisquit, in a sense. (They're unlevened.)

Instead of rising due to chemical leveners or yeast production...

They Steam from the inside to make this sort of light and fluffy "Super Muffins."

That are crispy golden brown on the outside, yet soft and fluffy on the inside.

CHEAP to make, but are still sold in all the high end steak houses up here like they're fancy.

Literally...

It's a cup of flour
2 Eggs
Cup of Milk
Tblspoon of melted butter
Salt

Put it in a blender and whip it up for 30 seconds (This is CRITICAL!)

Pour into a popover pan (You could use a muffin tin, preferably one that has steep sides)

Slip it into a preheated 400 degree oven for 40 minutes...
DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DOOR!!!

When they come out poke a small "Steam Hole" in each one...

Dirt cheap way to make a "Fancy" bread for a dinner party...

We just rip the things apart as we eat and apply some home made honeybutter.

If you want to add them to your regular dinner table repretoir. I'd reccomend getting a Popover Pan at Bed Bath and Beyond... $14.99...

But really...

In the long term... When you consider that you can make a healthier dinner bread for cheaper than saying buying bisquits...

I found that the PO pan paid for itself in about a month... And I have no Sodium Benzoate, or trans fat in my dinner breads!
(I also eat Popovers twice a week now.)

They go best...

With STEAK!

Yeah she actually requested that I get her rain gear for when we go out camping and fishing in the future, as using my "Spare Gear" hasn't gone so well for her in the past.

And then I'm taking her fishing this weekend...

Just remember when you go to make them... You ABSOLUTELY have to put them in the blender (Or a food pro) and blend it for 30 seconds straight on high... No other appliance in your kitchen has the ability to mix in the air needed to cause it to steam.

Popovers is one of those things where it's ridiculously simple... But everything has to be done correctly... Screw it up and you'll get little brown bricks

Literally...
Don't pre-heat the oven fully to 400 first = little brown bricks
Don't mix in a blender for 30 secs = little brown bricks
Don't pre-grease the pan = little brown bricks
Just eye up the ingredients = little brown bricks
Open the door to check on them while they're baking = little brown bricks

Do all that right... And you get an awesome DIRT CHEAP dinner bisquit

Nice...

We ran into a similar thing on our honeymoon at this high end restaurant and my wife ordered a big fancy meal with "King Crab Legs" as the side dish and she got Snow Crab.

When she went to go bust the waiter's balls... She discovered that apparently tropical people can't tell their elbow from their ******* when it comes to arctic crab...

They had no clue that it was snow...

Everything they had was snow... And they just thought it was king because someone told them it was king!

Pig roast weekend! :D

I have decided to go with injecting the pig with my beer/bbq sauce 24 hours prior to cooking.

I use Stubbs (local awesome brand). In a pan warm bbq sauce and add one beer. Let cool a little then inject the pig. 70lb pib should be about three bottles.

I will also rub pig with copius amounts of cajun seasoning, inside and out.

Next year I hope a few of you guys can make it!

-Get a full flush and fill (You should do this ever 2 years anyway up here)
-Check the tranny fluid (Make sure it's a happy red.)

Then I'd run injector cleaner through her on your next full tank (Especially since as I recall you're having low MPG problems.)

^^^^Realistically... The difference in trade in value between 160K and 200K is very minimal... It's going to be under a thousand dollars for sure...

This is all I could think about when I was driving home last night. Apparently I have to do a little bit more to make her happy. And again, I think you are the deepest poster on here! :)

When it comes to things like trucks, a strong horse, or a good dog... They just need a little extra care as they get older... But as long as you keep upping the effort, they'll keep trying their ass off not to let you down.

And you can't say that of any car, minivan, of SUV... Your Neighbors prize Sow, or your wife's chirping ass Parakeet!

And of course as I get older, I'm getting tougher... I've been keenly aware over the last 2 years or so that I'm starting to develop the early stages of what we call "The Old Man Toughness."

Starting on August 25th, to May 8th, I'm going back into "Hard Core" mode... I decided that I'm going to be 32 (As of August 21st)... And while I'm not anywhere near out of shape... I'm a tad bit softer about the mid section than what impresses me.

So I figured I'd take this winter (A season where I always put on a little weight) and get into "The best shape of my life." Just to make a statement to myself.

Okay...

So here's a question for you guys... Does any one here know how to process a deer.
(I mean I've got the gutting part... But I'm talking about turning that hunk of yummy corpse into steaks, roasts, and what will later become ground/sausage.)

Sounds like I've got a place to hunt this fall... Kind of reconnecting with some old friends (A Married couple I lost touch with for a while) and they've kind of invited me to hunt their land with them this fall. (They even have an extra gun they inherited.)

But after being screwed over by their last two processors... They were hoping I could help them learn how to process a deer... As apparently they believe that since I can butcher Beef Primals, that I should just be able to whip right through Bambi's Mother.

Usually injection is for adding fats.... As Fats Carry transport flavors with 3-7 times more potency than water based products.

The rub the night before will absorb in to the skin quite a bit. I will use garlic/butter to baste, but only enough to add flavor and allow for the crispy skin.

The big trick man is flare ups. I dont use a drip pan as it affects the fire (imo). I do keep a piece of sheet metal by the fire in case of a flare up. That way I can just lay it over the coals should one occur.

So with no stuffing, do you still truss it closed? (I mean if you left it open would it dry out the inner primals of the meat?)

A CHEAP German Pig Prep up here, (Roasting cabinet style) is to shread a couple heads of cabbage into it, Season with Salt & Red Pepper flake... And then just let the cabbage cook in the pork drippings inside.

Oh I see...

I've been thinking about playing up a stew recipe for smoked beef brisket... I just don't know how the smoke transfers into the broth... It's one thing if it's smokey richness... It's another thing if it's Acrid beef flavor!

Coldest I've ever seen is a -65 windchill... And that was back in the winter of 86-87... I was living outdoors at a survival camp for a week, with no Bibs or snow pants... I'll never forget that experience as long as I live...

And everyone kept asking me "Why are getting home sick?"

Ass-tards.
*****

In general though the winters here the last 10 years the worst you see is -40, and that's usually only in the dead of night, out on the ice sheet.

****

There are two periods of Spring and summer up here that can be horrible...

If we get an early spring it's actually worse for rain in May than if we get a late spring...

Simply because Early means warmer ground temps... Which means an earlier bloom... And all that vegetation puts a lot of transpiration humidity into the atmosphere...

In the summer the heat energy pushes all that transpiration towards the great lakes... So storms move fast and hard...

If it's spring.... The lower heat energy of the atmosphere slows it down and it's just crazy amounts of rain.

We had one of the earliest springs on record back in 2000, and it rained for 3 weeks straight in May.

Central Florida has some crushing, brutal humidity too. The air becomes, essentially, a thick, clear gel that you can somehow breathe.

Speaking of which, why doesn't the wind chill effect apply to warmer temperatures too, when it's both breezy and hot? Why does that only apply to cold temps? The mind boggles.

It does... Except in the summer it's the "Heat Index."

Windchill happens when it cold and dry... Heat Index happens when it's Warm and humid.

They're essentially the same thing...

Water vapor carries heat... So when the humidity is high in the winter it ends up being warmer, and the windchill isn't as savage, as say a dry day.

Hey Bro... How's things?

****

I just got a call from a client that I basically lost...

Last year when I was getting ready for the wedding and off on my honeymoon, I let my Mid-Life Crisis Dunderhead of a boss handle my accounts...

And he completely pissed off my biggest account, that I'd inherited only like 2 weeks before...

So they didn't know me from Adam... And he pissed them off...

I get back into town after 10 days off 8 of them spent not even on this continent...

And all I have is angry e-mails and phone messages saying how dissapointed they are in me.

I kissed ass a million ways from Sunday...

My Boss basically said "It's not my fault... I don't want to deal with it."
(I've never let him watch my business again... In fact I pay the secretary 10% to handle stuff for me.)

Basically the client went from busting my balls to giving me a polite "F*ck You, we're taking our business elsewhere."

And other than tieing up some loose ends they've ignored me ever since.

Then my boss busting my balls for losing the account. (Yes we got into a screaming match!) And even though I let it drop... I'm still pissed off that he never even apologized to me or them. (Getting myself pissed off about it again.)

/Rant

****

So turns out the trucking company that I do apparel for... Their secretary jumped ship to this old disgruntled client... And raved about what a straight shooter I am, and how I always took care of her at the trucking company...

So they just called and tossed me a pretty tricky project, with this "We'll think about giving you a second chance" vibe...

I jumped on it... Kissed as much ass I could without losing any dignity, and jumped on getting estimates...

Now I've got to sit here and wait for the estimators to come back to me... Hopefully with good news.
(If I can get this one back it could be HUGE!)

I jumped on it... Kissed as much ass I could without losing any dignity, and jumped on getting estimates...

Now I've got to sit here and wait for the estimators to come back to me... Hopefully with good news.

There is a lot of biotech out there + 70 degrees all year around from what I am told. But then again, I cannot give up the fall time around Michigan.

I swear you are like my e-dad. :D

You're right though. I exaggerate a bit. My kids are pretty much well behaved. But because they are male, they have that short attention span. They did get off the furniture when told to, but then they would get side-tracked by the rest of it and take off again.

Seriously though, I should probably bust their butts more often. As a matter of fact I am going to wear them out tonight for no good reason. (They probably have it coming to them) :D

BTW, I agree totally with your statement. ;)

LOL...

Glad I could help...

It's wierd in a way... Because I've got 3 friends (5 really) that I've known since we were in kindergarten-1st grade...

So I completely see how they were raised, and how it turned them into who they are now...

The guys who's parents were "Firm but Fair" They grew up to be far more successful reliable and well rounded, than say the guy who's parents "Kept him in line when they could." And as long as he made a good excuse for misbehaving he got a reduced or no punishment.

And that guy is constantly unemployed, flashing back and forth between living in his parents basement... He's got all stuff that he calls "My" when really it's just him borrowing it from his Dad...

The only thing you can count on him for is that he's a great guy to joke around with...

*****

I look at my life... And the attitudes, values and structure I had at say Age 8 and younger... Are the attitudes, values and structure that I evolved away from and came full circle back to... With them all recolored for my personal adventure of course.

So in a strange way... I'm like the offspring of Hulk Hogan, Rocky Balboa, Optimus Prime and Luke Skywalker!

Yeah the beauty of football in your youth is that it teaches you to be a warrior, and play in a team... I lament that I didn't stick with the program through the full 4 years of HS... Later on in adult leagues and such I really shined. (I set the record for most sacks and safeties in the league for a single game and for a season... Then broke my own records the next year.)

If I would have been doing that my senior year, instead of snorting coke off my girlfriend's hip bones... I might have actually gotten some kind of ride to go to college!

Whew...

Kind of a rush...

My First thought...

1. I think some where we've pussified our culture... I mean yes senseless Violence is bad... But the older I get the more I think we need more "Senseful Violence."

Some of the ass burglars I talked to on the phone in the last hour... The attitude they copped... The way they were completely unhelpful and made my day worse...

I bet those "Customer Dis-service" reps would have been a whole lot nicer, if I would have been standing in front of them, and every time they mouthed off, I reared back ready to punch them in the face.

I mean really... Someone should kick their ass... Or there should at least be less of a penalty than "They don't get my business."

/Rant

****

On the other hand... I just waged through a SLEW of ass holes and greedy bastards...

And I totally slam dunked my quote...

AND, they sent me the art file that my competitor created for them... And it had a TON of errors, (Mixed flat colors.)

So I "Casually and Politely" explained some of the tricky aspects of how we'd need to adjust the colors for the best printing... And asked them if "These changes would look okay."

Then I spiffed up and professionally crisped up all the colors... and put it side by side with the crap artwork...

And stayed demure.

*****

You know even if I don't get this one... At least I know I did my best... And if I lose the account completely and truly for all time... At least it wasn't from my boss fumbling it away out of my power... And I at least "Go Down Swinging."

Should be an interesting weekend taking her musky fishing. Watch her get lucky and catch a big one.

She's been really excited to catch a fish this year... And then everytime I take her out, we scratch... And it's not like I've just done my own thing... When I take her out, it's just like when I take a kid fishing, and making sure she's having fun and properly rigged as top priority.

Throw my best game at the water, and she still gets skunked...

But she keeps hanging in there like a trooper.

What I'm going to do this weekend though, is as I'm Musky Fishing working the lake from end to end (Takes about 6 hours) I'm going to stop off at various hot spots for crappies, sunnies, bass... And then my 2 Walleye Honeyholes at night.

****

Next week the master plans are in the works for us to go Musk Fishing on Mille Lacs...

We're going to fish the same areas that we ice fished during the winter... Because while the Walleye Bite was the worst I've ever seen in my entire life... There were MONSTER Pike everywhere... And where there's Large Pike, there's bound to be Musky...

And even still... If I hook into 3 pike that are all 30" and more... I'm not going to call it a failed trip!

Got another chipmunk I need to catch. Saw him running around in the garden

I keep having this story come up in my life and memory... So I figured I'd share it...

Back when I must have been... 11-12... My Mom and I were out working in the garden. And something was rutting around in the green beans.

Now my Mother is a large, very power, and extremely tough woman... In her prime she was 6'0" 230 pounds of high powered Farm girl turned factory worker muscle... There are feats of strength I saw this woman do in my youth that I don't know that I could do now as a 6'4" 255 pound man!

So we're working in the garden... Something is rutting around in the green beans.

My Mom assumes it's my Cat Eddy, who'd been dropping a duce in the garden and my sand box a lot at that time.

Quicker than Hannible Lecter with a Clorophorm rag, she plunges her hand into the bush of slumping bean vines and says "HA! I got ya!" She pulls her hand out as she's saying "Bad Kitty..." And there's a friggin' wood chuck in her leather gloved hand.

She didn't know what to do with it... She had it by the back and ribs... Afraid that if she put it down it would come after her or me... She decided to SQUEEZE IT TO DEATH!

She just squeezed with everything she had, until it stopped thrashing...

Then had me go get a big rock, she quickly dropped it and splattered it's skull to death with the rock... Then threw the corpse in the neighbors yard.

*****

I don't know why... But the picture of that wood chuck thrashing around in my Mom's Catcher's Mit of a hand, while she stared at it with strained focus... Has just resurfaced in my memory for the last 2 weeks or so.

*****

I started my painting and creative endeavors hoping to ressurect important energies within my Mind...

And so far all I've come up with is a picture of a wood chuck getting squeezed to death!

Hmmm... Does this mean it's working?

Dang, bro!

That's a pretty crazy story!

Not only catching a woodchuck barehanded, which alone is a feat for Guiness, but then killing it bare handed...your Mom was a beast (said in the most respectful way possible) ;)

I had a similar story as a kid - probably not more than 3 or 4. My mom was raking some dirt on the edge of our house to make a flower bed and she came across a big snake. As I remember it, it was 5-6 feet long and thick as your arm. Now, my memory is probably exaggerated, as I was tiny, but still, it was big.

I hid behind her leg while she jousted with the thing with the rake, trying to keep it from attacking her and of course me. Eventually she got the upper hand on the wretched beast and the multiple stab wounds from the garden rake subdued it.

To this day I have a phobia of snakes, and I think it was largely forged that summer day from what I perceived as a tyke to be the day my mom saved my life.

Yeah biggest snakes we have here are Garder and Corn... Which are nothing.

Snapping turtles in the Mississippi (100 yards from my house) are pretty crazy.

****

As for my Mom... (Who's a pure Meso)... Growing up everyone did the "My Dad can beat up your Dad" thing with my friends... My Fall back was "But my Mom will kick all your Dad's asses!"

While my Mom's Strength was impressive until Geriatrics set in. (And she's still the strongest old lady in the world.) What's really her defining trait is sheer toughness.

I've got a "Tough as Nails" thing going on... But my Mom makes me luke like a little friggin' wuss...

She had a knee replacement about 16 months ago... And they gave her pain meds...
She took ONE, the day after surgery... Said it made her feel funny, and decided to stop taking them...
Then refused nursing care... They told her "You have to prove you walk with at least a walker and not just get around in a wheel chair." (This was 3 days post-op, when most people have their eyes rolling around in their head on pain meds, stuck in a wheel chair.

My Mom didn't wait for them to bring a walker... She simply got up and FORCED herself through the pain and swelling to hobble 10 feet to the bathroom and back.

Usually in rehab people are held back by "Guarding" against the pain... Her PT said that he's never had a patient, male, female, young or old that rehabbed as fast as she did... She would just ignore what she called "The Crunching" and grit through it.

My Mother may have dim mental faculties... But Her creativity, and sheer steely toughness just keep impressing me year after year.

So I'm curious... I saw a ticker the other day that said that National Gas Prices are around $4.06 a gallon average...

When Oil was found big in North Dakota gas prices here in MN dropped from $4.08 a gallon... To today $3.67 (Down from $3.69 yesterday.)

So now is this due to my closeness to ND in the futures market, and I should feel bad about ripping on NoDak for the last 2 decades...

Or is it just everywhere...

turned 28 sunday, it aint all the bad lol

28 -29 was the year where I kind of started realizing that I needed to get my act together more... I didn't have my head up my ass or anything...

I just realized that I had stuff coming up on the horizon, that I could either starting buckling down for... Or I would get spritual whiplash when the time came... So I started my self improvement campaign...

Which really started showing up around 29...

Got married when I was 31... And now... My 32nd birthday is 26 days away!

I can still say "As I'm getting older, I'm getting better."

Gas is around 4.15 or so? It's hard to tell now, with the dollar tanking and gas rising, they've stopped using numerical dollars and have switched to centimeters of forced rectal expansion as an index of economic impact, much like they track cervical dilation at the early stages of labor.

The best deal near our neighborhood is currently 13 cm.

draw is not adjustable on the bow itself..

It requires a module... I have a 29 and 30" draw mod for it.

Its a whisper Creek Stealth 2005 model. A to A I think is 31 or 32"

70lb limbs on it, very smooth draw cycle and the quietest bow I have ever shot.
I have an extra set of 60lb limbs, extra bus cable, extra idler wheel and I think extra rollers.
Set up with a NAP quicktune 1000 arrow rest, GWS striker sight(3 pin), and a 4 arrow kwikee kwiver. I forget what the name of the stabilizer on it is... I think its a s-Coil.

Target and other such stores might have them as well... Any Kitchen or housewares "Has a chance" of having one...

If you get in a pinch you can use a muffin pan (Use the steepest sided muffin pan you have... Just make sure the oven if heated to 400 first (Not 385 etc...)

And try to whip it in the blender for an extra 10 seconds...

They will still rise... They'll just be a little on the heavy side.

And then I would bake for say 43-44 mins instead of 40.

Basically it looks like a muffin pan... Except the cups are deeper, and narrower than usual, and they have a rolling more open lip (For the pop over to blossum out of.)

In a usual muffin pan though it's pressed metal, and there's just sheet metal connecting each up...

In the case of a popover pan (At least the BB&B Pan) The cups are connected by metal dowlings, so as to allow maximum air space to surround each and every cup.

I am asking $300 for the whole set up and then I guess shipping

just for reference... the bow sold new for $599 bare

do a little research on them if you wish.. they are good bows and have great customer service... Owners name is Jeff Nish

Hey, it's a side dish that is the perfect accompaniment for Steak... And helps save money on food bills, for more boat gas...

Not to mention I'm sure Tech is using this as a hook to get a blow job after he cooks dinner for his girl anyway.

And once he's got popovers mastered, Then I'll teach him how to make Yorkshire Beef Pudding... Which later he can use to make a "Dutch Baby" for his girl for breakfast in bed... Which if he does it right I'm sure will lead to even more blow jobs and boat gas money.

They hit a little bit in the spring but have left when the carp have moved in and stayed for over a month in the area were I fish. No one can catch northerns with live bait or by casting. Sucks I miss hooking into them.

Your best bet right now, (Considering you're shore bound) would be to find an area (Without Carp) that has rocks (Or Gravel) with weeds growing up through the Rocks/Gravel...

Like Walleye, the Pike will start to come to these near shore structures for prime time. (Assuming these weeds are not Fox Tail... Which non-surprisingly is a weed that looks like the tail of a fox!)

There might still be, but with a ton of bait sticking around, perhaps they are not very hungry or aggressive or motivated. Then you'd have to get lucky enough to drag your offering right by a fish's nose to get him to bite out of sheer instinct. That's been my experience in salt water for the most part, most trips I try to catch live bait and use that. I have found pretty dependably that when the bait is everywhere, and it's easy for me to catch, it must be easy for predators to catch too. They get lazy and unless you are lucky enough to throw it right in their face the fish say essentially "Meh, not worth the effort with this full belly".

One of the problems that CM is running into being Shore-Locked is that this time of year the water is pretty much at it's warmest... And the warmer the water the less dissolved oxygen it holds... So for these large predators, with large bodies... Going into the warm shallows is like one of us going to altitude...

So they only do it for short stints to get food...

Assuming that they can't find plentiful food out deep. (I read a story recently about how the DNR once radio tagged a Musky to see it's seasonal migration pattern... Turns out the Musky simply found an off sore hump adjacent to deep water, and he spent 6 months swimming in a circles picking off Red Horse that were living there!)

*****

But I digress...

So the reason I was previously saying that weeds on Rock & Gravel are going to be the best bet for CM...

1. The Pike are out deep where it's cooler and better O2... Coming in for forays...

Hard Bottom always comes up faster... So they can rise from the deep faster... Rather than swim exposed up a gradual slope. It means less time in Low O2 water, and it means more "Element of surprise."

2. Green weeds give off oxygen... So the stronger the weed bed, the more dissolved oxygen there is at least being given off into the water for a short term. (And it also means better cover for forage fish, and thus more forage fish.)
So at least when he gets there, there's more to breathe.

Now if it's on a Muck bottom... Muck is essentially decomposed weeds... Decomposed weeds give off carbon... Carbon bonds to the Oxygen the green weeds above are giving off.

*****

As for plethroa of Forage base... Yep... The more forage, the worse the bite!
(That's what killed me on Mille Lacs last winter, with the giant perch spawn from Spring of 2007 everywhere, they didn't care to eat my presentation!)

Interesting. So do you think you'd have better luck trying to be in the shallows at the right time & place (during a foray) or going after them in the deeper water where they're not in feeding mode?

Nainoa

Interesting. So do you think you'd have better luck trying to be in the shallows at the right time & place (during a foray) or going after them in the deeper water where they're not in feeding mode?

Now with a Boat... During the Bright part of the day... I'd find structure that's adjacent to deep water... Where they spend the day making longer "Quick Strikes" onto that struture... because even shallow water in the middle of the lake, is cooler and has more DO2.

HOWEVER... The Hottest bite of the 24 hour period will the be shallow Rocky Weeds, right at Sundown...

Because here's where we get into "The other Part of the equation."

The Plankton Cycle...

During the Day Phyto & Zoo Plankton live low in the water... Gathering a little sun that filters through the deep, without cooking themselves...

As the Sun goes down, the Plankton rise in the water column (In order to make up for the waning light.)

As they come up... Small invertabrates come to feed on them... And the forage fish come out of that thick cover just to the edge of exposure to feed on the inverts, and the Big Predators come to feed on the forage fish...

So for a small window the Big predators are meat hunters... except instead of "If it's Brown it's Down" it's "If it swims, it goes in my belly."

The bigger the predator, the longer this window is. (Night adapted predators are a different story.)

In the case of Pike (Who are aggressive feeders) they go HOG WILD for about an hour before sun down... And about an hour after sundown...

For Crappies (A species that is forage when it's small much of it's life and large predator for the last 20% of it's life) we have what's commonly called "Crappie 30." Because there's a half hour window just as sun sets where the big ones come in and feed like crazy.

Then once it's dark... The lake belongs to the Walleye, and the Muskies, and woe to anything dumb enough to get within striking distance of those bad boyz.

I was just thinking how cool it would be to be able to actually see all of that, see it from the fish's point of view.

I believe that with much larger animals like dolphins, whales and sharks, they already have camera-tags that they can put into/onto a fish, to take video and other data like water temps and either transmit it or store it to memory.

It would be pretty cool if they had much smaller versions of those for game fish. You'd see where the fish go, what they do, how they attack, all from its point of view.

DFGs could plant tags all over the state in various types of fish, then host and update the data on their website as the tags are turned in and reused. Then you could study specific fish behavior in specific lakes.

Yep Mille Lacs Tags certain walleye every year in their survey... And while they do have tag cameras... It's way to expensive... As it is there are a few radio tags... And then everything else is coded tags...

If you catch a fish with a tag, you turn the tag in at any one of the many tag stations with all of you contact info... And then send you later all of the info on your fish... Where it was originally tagged and when, and what other info they have on it, if it say turned up in a sample net and was retagged or whatever...

that being said.... Out of probably45-50 fish... I've never caught a tagged one... Or maybe I did, it was too big to keep so I threw it back without even looking etc...

Just finished dinner... First time ever smoking Salmon...

We didn't cure it first (Wife was lazy last night.) But holy crap... 45 mins of Mesquite smoke huffing like a steam train... It was the "Bacon" of fish!

Next time I'm curing the bastard first, and I bet you it will be "Fish Bacon."

Damn fine dinner...

Mesquite smoked salmon...
Steak seared Scallops...
Steamed green beans... (With garlic blessing)
Steamed sweet potatoe Slices...
Whole wheat bisquits....

Jamican Jerk Rib-eye tonight. Bobbi Flay style with habenero sauce. It was awesome. GF is pretty much a veg head though... :(

You know I keep meaning to play around with Jerk... But somehow it always finds itself on the back burner...

Partially because I'm a purist in many regards and not high on long marinades on prime cuts... (Cheap cuts are a different story.)

I don't know that I can bring myself to do Jerk beef... Simply because I worship the pure true taste of the steer like a reverse Hindu... But Jerk Chicken... Of Jerk Pork... Or a Smoked Jerk Chicken stuffed with pork chops & Bacon...

Hmmm...

My friend... I believe you have inspired me to look into adding "Jerk" into my culinary arsenal.

:D

What brand of Veg head is she... Are we talking Lacto Ovo?

If so... For a gift... Buy her the book "Indian in Six"

I dated a girl who was Crazy on Indian food, and lived by this book...

http://www.amazon.com/Indian-Irresistible-Recipes-That-Ingredients/dp/1904920160

Indian food is the goddam is the penultimate of Veggie cooking... It's the one style of food that you can eat a veggie meal... And not feel a painful yearning for meat at the end of the meal!

I agree that ribeye is an expensive cut for jerk however I have perfected it over the last few months and was dying for a great steak. It was amazing!!!

Jerk chicken is one of specialties that the woman will eat. My BBQ chicken is also stupid good but I don't make it that often.

Hey I'm glad they turned out!

Your next step, should you own a food Pro (And you should anyway) is to make honey butter to go with them... simply take a stick of butter... Two table spoons of whatever light honey you enjoy and whip them into a nice meld in the FP... Goes great with pop overs, morning toast, warm buns... Any fresh warm bread!

I hear ya Bro... Growing up poor, and now doing... "Well enough" I don't like to eat any old thing... Now that's not to say that I think I should eat fancy and spendy... I'm all for a cheap boston butt smoked proper... Or making the most out of my money good.

But just shoveling a can of Spaghetti's O's or a tostino's party pizza into my mouth makes my soul sad.

In the future we're going to have to rap about Jerk-cooking?

Most importantly... Jerk + Smoking.

Damn right now my hands smell like fish and mesquite smoke from that salmon... And my fingers have smelled this good since before I was married! ;)

worked in a meat dept for a few months back in the day.. Only thing I liked about the ribeye, was it was an easy cut...

might look nice with all that marbeling of fat, but its not what I like... edible, but not a fav

But it's that wonderful marbeling that gives it all it's fabulous flavor.

If I was 20 years old and making the money I am now... I'd be buying ribeye in bulk grilling it, frying it, baking it, snorting it and jamming it in my cock hole, it's that damn good...

But I have wiser health choices now.

I just have an old webber grill. We use charcoal with an electric coil that we stick in the coals to get the coals hot.

We use a coil too. That's the way to go IMO.

Working on the yaks this morning, then try and straighten out some of my crap in the garage before it gets too hot; Susie said it looks like, quote; a bomb went off in a pawn shop.

Then hit the gym later, then try and go out and catch some mackerel for the smoker.

Well mission... Semi-Fail...

Took my wife Musky Fishing today...

If I look at it as a Musky trip... It was an utter failure...

She got sea sick, complained and griped for three hours...

I got her into a quiet little back bay and she had fun playing with the dinky sun fish...

She learned a lot and had a good time (Other than getting sea sick from the wakes.)

And so that's what matters...

It's just I could have taken her to a closer lake for sunnies... Rather than blow $30 in gas because she wanted to go Musky fishing for 45 minutes.

Then she wanted to go home... So I figured it was better to bring her home while she was still giggling about the little sunnies, than have her fish the 2 hours till sundown, frustrated.

C'est La Vie...

On another bright note... She did an excellent job launching and landing the boat. (My Deep V isn't the easiest boat to land)

The only thing she screwed up was when I said "Okay... Now come up here and grab the hook." (Which I should have said, walk to the front of the boat.) Because she just straight up jumped out of the boat, waded through the water to me and grabbed the winch hook.

WTF?

All told... It was a good day, because she grew in her fishing & Boating skills... And we worked well as a team.

Seems like you did pretty well in my book.

My nephew just got back from Iraq... Mom tried to kill us with every fattening food known to man. I survived though.

A tapped keg and many younger men telling stories makes soberity tough for me. I'm not gonna lie; I thought about it. My son was there too so it made the choice simple. It worries me what happens when he's not around though. My nephew (who I helped raise BTW) offered me a beer and I just quickly walked away.

Another day in the books though. (63 days and counting)

Hey Good for you Bro!

Recently I've been working more and more with Addicts (And some alcoholics by default)... In one part to Share what I learned and went through, and in another part, to sort of explore whether or not I want to write a book about Addiction.

Have you thought about AA or any kind of program.
