It was good. I keep spending too much money though . We had to buy a washer & dryer this weekend :(

Our washer has been broken for a long time. Just been going to the laundry mat instead

Afternoon broze. Had a good weekend out here in DubyaWad. Got to demo a tandem Hobie and had a nice outing on Sunday although I left some key gear in the truck, ouch, that kind of sabotaged the day. Here's a shovelnose guitar fish I thought was a big halibut; it gave me the telltale boing boing boing headshake treatment. But it was one of these instead, hooked right in the very tip of that cartilaginous snout, so it was a real battle and a lot of fun actually.

After snapping the pic I held it up with the gaff and hacked the tail section off to bring home, which is a nice slab of boneless meat. It was still alive, twisting and turning on the gaff. Blood and guts frikkin everywhere. You guys would have been so proud.

Well, we missed each other on the phone, then I didn't hear back so I assumed we were in Abort Mode. It's for the best since I think he and his brother still have to get licenses, and it really hasnt turned over fishing wise, the boats are still running way offshore and/or southward. Another 2-3 weeks and it should blow up.

So as the water warms up the fish start coming in more shallow... Is that how it works?

*It's the opposite here... As the water warms up the fish start going deep...

Yeah they move in closer to the coast and/or up from points south as the water warms and the season matures. And you just follow the progress in the fishing reports each week.

Nothing worse than a slow Monday. That's like starting a long road trip, and as soon as you get on the highway, you're stuck in gridlock.

I know at least a couple of us like that show a lot. Watching them laying out the pots, and doing a lot of bottom fishing as I do, and missing a lot of hits lately as I do, suddenly I had an idea. Almost like a submerged trotline or miniturized commercial longline. I hope the pic is easy to understand, two fairly heavy pyramid sinkers laid down in sequence, maybe 10-30 yards apart, then along the line in between, you put your bottom fishing baits; you could have live bait on a swivel, able to swim back and forth trolley style. Or a series of hooks holding dead baits.

There's got to be some kind of stopper just beyond the weight closest to the boat, so you a) know when the line is taught and laying horizontal along the bottom and b) so the sinker doesnt slide down the line when you're reeling in. But you'd also have to be able to get that sinker off real quick so you can reel line past that point with a fish on. Just a brainstorm, if you have a .02 to throw in please do.

Here in CA you can use multiple baited hooks in saltwater so this would be perfectly legal AFAIK.

Interesting concept, but as how to get the top sinker off quickly to continue reeling..... I dont think there is a good answer....

One thing i dont like about that setup... is how close to the bottom the bait is... In some cases, bottom will be ideal, but that is not my style really...

Neat idea though

Yeah it might be the fight of a lifetime if you get a big fish at the very end hook of the rig, and you have to fight it, plus the weights, plus what has got to be quickly becoming the most fun snag fest in recorded history...

I'm not saying it can't be done...

I'm just saying download the Soundtrack from "The best of the Rocky Movies."

It should be just about the point in the training Montage sound track from Rocky IV where Rocky is jogging up the mountain screaming "Drago! Draaaagoooo!" Where you'll be screaming "Halibut... 39 pound Halibuuuuuttt!"

And then you fight it onto the Yak, and it thrashes and rolls, impaling a hundred hooks into your arms, legs, chest, back of your nut sack... And there might be a moment there, where you feel... Displeased.

;)
:D

As for the clips to quickly pop the weights...

I'd look into the same clips that you see on Planer boards running the surface...

They're meant to quickly clip the line onto and off of the board, while in mid fight...

So then at least you're only fighting the high weight of the rig for the length and time that it takes to get the first weight in... And you can easily unclip it without letting slack get in your line.

Many a fish have I seen caught by birds of prey... Bald Eagles, Osprey and Hawks are pretty strong in population up here... Not to mention Pelicans, Egrets, and Herrons...
(Hey it's the land of 10,000 lakes... Means it's also the land of 100,000 birds of prey.)

The Osprey (Fish Hawk) is probably the coolest strike... The way it goes from gliding, and then folds it's wings back into these sort of "Angry Looking Dive Fins" as it rockets out of the sky, slams into the water, and pops up a second later with a fish.

*****

My Wife is crazy about bird feeders...

She was telling me about the time she was watching all the little birds chowing down on all the new seed she gave them... When all of a sudden WHAP! A Red Tailed Hawk slammed out of the sky, nailed a sparrow, carried it up into the tree and started ripping it apart and eating...

As she said "Looks like I made a double bird feeder!"

*****

I've seen Bald and Golden Eagles catch some Serious friggin' fish...

Probably the biggest was on the lake I'm headed up to in just 2 short days...

Saw the Baldy hit the water... Picked up what looked like a big fish...

As it was flying the fish was flailing, and managed to slip free...

We went over to the bay we saw the fish land in, and it was a 20 inch pike, half dead, stunned, with it's sides all ripped up.

*****

Another interesting Fish Bird to watch is the Loon...
Doesn't fly worth a ****... Can't really walk worth a damn either... But under the water, it swims like greased lightning...

They have a real knack for when you're getting skunked... They come up near the boat, and pick off a fish and eat it while you're trolling by.

Morning men. Awesome bald eagle photo, never had the pleasure of seeing one in person.

Anyone ever seen a black skimmer? There's a cool bird for you. Gull-sized, but with the turbo-dynamic lines of a fast flier like a tern. Black skimmers cruise - fast as hell - just above the water surface, inches over it. Their lower bill is longer than the upper bill and they point their head down so the bill slices the surface of the water like a glass cutter. When they see or sense or feel a baitfish at the surface, they quickly snap their heads down, closing the bill and grabbing the fish. God only knows how they can respond so quick, they are doing 30 mph or so. They are not very afraid of humans and will come zinging 'right' by you on the beach or on a boat, absolutely silent, freaking you out.

I had seen them on Long Island as a kid, where we were Serious Birders back then. All the bird books had them as east coast birds, range-wise.

Then, musta been 20 years later I am in Santa Barbara, CA next time I saw one, and did a double take. Did some research and it turns out they have expanded their range dramatically, over the Gulf coast to the west coast, and have been spotted throughout the midwest too. Keep your eyes peeled next time your on a warm beach around sunset, one of the coolest birds you'll ever see.

Yeah the deadliest catch rig might actually work around here where the bottom is just vast expanses of featureless flat sand. You can go a quarter mile before you see a foot's worth of depth change.

Re: a fast-release method for the sinker, I can think of a couple things to try. One is tying a dropper loop on the main line where youd want that sinker, then just use a snap to connect the sinker to the loop, which could be quickly removed fighting a fish, and the loop could then be wound onto the spool easily, you always just cut the sinker off the loop in the heat of the battle if things were intense and you didnt want to risk losing the fish while you're screwing around with a little snap closure.

What would be 'perfect' but AFAIK they dont make them, is a sinker with the same kind of depress-release spring loaded hook mechanism you see on those red and white round bobbers. Maybe retrofit one of those bobbers, fill it up with bb's and some glue so it acts like a weight but still has the quick release feature.

How do those planer board clips work? Dont think Ive seen one up close, or paid enough attention last time I did.

I looked at that rig too and I'm on the same page as Nainoa. That would work only on a sandy, snag free bottom. If you used live bait it will only hide under the leaves and other bottom crap. However, if you used a cutbait and put the hook on a 6-9" leader with a cork of some sort under the hook so it floated above the bottom it might work. Also that rig would be tough on a rod and reel. Put a float above the sinker ends so you can pull them up together and check them like a drop line. We have drop lines that are below a 2'-0" PVC pipe with the PVC surrounded inside a neon colored Noodle. like the Noodles kids play with in the pool. PVC pipe fits perfect inside one and its easy to keep floating and easy to see.

If you go to Google and you type in "Planer Board Fishing" 3-4 links down is a PDF on Planer Board basics...

A clip like what connects the line to the board, might also work for your quick release sinker issue...

Okay...

So here's another question to help you flesh out this idea. (Which is similar to what Crabbers call "Long Lining.")

Okay... So you're sitting there, holding your drift position...

And WHAM... Ton of bricks on your line... Feels like a Hali...

You start reeling... You come to the first sinker and slick as **** it slides right off... You keep reeling (Wow this feels like a monster, and he wants to run.)

You fight the good fight... You keep reeling... Gaining ground... And then the first hook hits the top eyelet...

You have a baited hook, every 5 feet for 100 feet of line... 20 hooks... And a fish that is stripping drag, but you're gaining ground...

Now what do you do?

A: reel the hook into your bale (Assuming you can even get it through the eyes.)

B: Start hand fighting him with that snazzy armored shark glove you always forget in the truck? While you hope he doesn't rip the hook, while you pile hooks and line all over your ever so tender lap, and expensive wet suit.

I don't see how that would work, unless you just had short leaders with pretied loops, and used hooks with snaps thru the eyelet? But then you'd have to unsnap them at each hook point, so you'd probably want to use fewer hooks spread out farther apart if you went that way.

All true about the bait, but keep in mind I do have an ideal near-flat sandy bottom to work with. I think I'd use a shorter run and let (1) live bait slide back and forth trolly style, and a longer run if I could figure out how to get around the hook/eyelet thing. I suppose the whole rig could detach and you could handline it in after you get to where the first hook is.

The floats are a good idea. But I think at the point where you have floats marking each end of what's now a de facto longline, I think that may qualify as commercial gear have to check the regs though. I know a fishermans line has to be tended to at all times technically. Keeping the whole thing attached to a rod and reel keeps you in recreational angler territory.

It's funny you mentioned those pool noodles. I use them on my rods in lieu of leashing them, they float the rods away from the yak if I flip in the surf so they dont snap in two or sink. They are also way handy for burying hooks when you are moving between spots. Just reel up and sink the hook into the styrofoam and no snags.

I had a little one on my noodle rod. I didn't even realize I had lost it until coming back into the harbor and saw a strange little orange thing floating, as I got closer....can it be? Yeah it was the same one I lost.

See now if you weren't in a Yak... And were say on just a 16 foot boat (Like Mine) I could figure out how to do it, with a 26 foot tag.

You'd just treat it like a Lindy Rig... Crawler Harness...

But the max you can land a fish reliably with is 10 feet... So if you were at the back of my 16 foot boat... With a 26 foot long harness with just a **** load of hooks tied into it (Palomar knot) with multiple bait situations... And when a Fish hits...

You take the Rod, and walk it to the nose of the boat... Point the rod tip high in the air... And a guy at the back of the boat should be able to net a fish at the end of the 26 foot tag... Just as your first hook would be coming to the top eyelet.

So I can totally see how to make a smaller version of it work. In essence when I drift the mud flats in late summer for Walleye I do the same thing with 1-2 hooks, on a 10 foot snell...

It's the Yak the confinement of the Yak that's giving me trouble.

Okay...

So let's take a look at the exact system of a Lindy Rig...

Per this Jpeg...

I've caught hundreds of Walleye off mud, sand and gravel flats with this presentation.

Essentially you drift (In the trough, which is why I love a big drift sock at Mid-Bow.)

Rod/reel= Spinning
Line= Super Braid (I prefer Fireline with a Mono-Backer)

A the end of your line is a Lindy (Or Egg Sinker) with the line running through the hole and tied at the end is a Swivel... Hooked to your swivel through a surgeon's loop is the Lindy Rig (AKA Roach Rig, AKA: Snell Rig... There are minor technical differences, that aren't germain to this.)

The Lindy Rig line is always either Mono or Flourocarbon.
*Note since FC sinks, you'll want some float in line at some point.

When we get to the later season and the bite gets lighter we need longer and longer Lindy rigs... I have seen 12 footers and 14 footers...

But honestly... Landing a 10 foot last year from the middle captains position, when everything else was going right was still hell. So 10 foot is the max that I personally would ever do.

Now I usually go with a single hook, and a leech (Minnow in early season)

However many people swear by Crawlers... Only a big old juicy crawler is too much for one hook...

So guys will tie another small hook (Sometimes two) a head of the terminal hook...

Since MN Regs say that you can't use multiple baits and multiple hooks, I've never tried it...

However... There's nothing that says you can't tie more hooks on with palomar knots, and put bait on them when you drag...

Problem is... You're limited to that 10 feet, when that swivel and weight hits the top eyelet.

****

Note, when fishing with it... You leave the bale guard open, with your finger on the line... (Pad if preferably to knuckle crease.)

The super line will let you feel the tap of a strike... And when you feel that first tap, you let go of the line... So the fish doesn't feel the drag of the boat, and takes the bait full on...

I give it 3-Mississippi's... But have gone 7 on light hot summer bites.

Then you set the hook, and cross his eyes...

He's yours!

^^^^Beyond that... In a Yak... I can't think of any other way that would keep you from having hooks in your lap, with a fighting fish at the end of the same line.

Get up the next morning and go fishing at a near by lake... Sucks to have to run in and explode some oderiferous ass chili into a porta john that's been perking it's hellacious stink broth in the hot summer sun FOR DAYS.

So the night before, I take one... And then again when I get up in the morning I take one...

Take more than 3 in a 24 hour period and you won't be able to **** for two days, so don't over use it etc...

If I've got an upper GI sour thing going on, then I'll add some Pepto to the mix etc...

^^^^I learned my lesson after getting the stomach flu 4.5 miles out on the Ice Sheets of Mille Lacs this past winter...

Because as bad as ****ting in a well stewed Porta-Potty may be in the summer... It's still a lot better than a bag in a bucket at -20 with a 20 MPH wind.

Well for one... That's horrendous for the environment...

And actually there's a virus in Mille Lacs lake that's affecting the fish... Which is harmless to human beings...

They figure it got there from some one who ate Sushi, and carried it onto the lake in his intestines... Then crapped it into the water...

Because it's a virus that's only found in Sea Fish that live in the waters in the sea of Japan!

****

The other problem is that when you make that hole... Water comes up it...

And even if you just pop the hole short of the water, and go to cover it with ice...

Do you really want to be spraying a thick and nasty out your ass with your pants around your ankles and the swirling wind that's been blowing for 5 miles unimpeded decides to change direction....

And then you've got frozen evil sprayed on the back and inside of your pants...

Luckily for about half of my bout with that stomach flu, it was just me and my buddy Spazz in my fish house... And Marlon hadn't gotten up there yet... So I went over to Marlon's Fish House, popped his lock (I memorized his combo) and used it as a "****ting Shelter."

But once Marlon showed up, I had to go back onto the ice for **** #7 through #16.

****

On a funny note though...

Another common problem people run into on the ice, with a portable...

One guy on an Ice Fishing Forum was answering "What are some of the worst things that have ever happened to you on the ice."

I found this guys reply absolutely hillarious!

This was one guys response when someone asked about taking a **** on the ice...

A bag usually works for me. Beware the dreaded wallmart bag. My buddy was out on Mille Lacs last year in his portable and the old #2 hit. Well this was no ordinarry poo, this is the one you could pass through a screen and not hit a single wire.

Well he attempted to poo in a wallmart bag, the cheap bag blew out the bottom. So there he is in the middle of the lake, no watter to wash up and poo on everything. It sprayed all over the floor and all over his vex.

From there, he washed his hands in the hole and then went to his truck to find some napkins or anything to clean up with. While he was gone, he left the door open on his shack...big whoops!!! Upon returning, all his poo had frozen to everything. So he ended up having to turn on the heater and waiting till the poo un-thawed to clean up. He said the smell was unberable....He ended up throwing up out the door onto the ice... Which then became slick as it was starting to freeze... So later when he went outside to catch a breath, he wiped out and landed in the pile of his own vomit.

Beware the Wallmart Bags!!!!

Cheap Portable Fish House = $300
Cheap Vex = $300

Lord knows what else might be horrified...

But really... $600 worth of gear... I'd have a hard time burning it/trashing it etc...

Don't know that I would clean it on the ice...

Maybe put a bunch of bags over the frozen waste to keep it from spreading... Seal everything up... take it home and pour Rubbing alcohol, scope and warm soapy water on it near the edge of my neighbors property.... And hope to hell my wife doesn't come home early and ask me what I'm doing!

Having to take a crap without access to modern facilities is an exercise in ingenuity.

I used to work construction (electrician for private housing contractors) and some contractors would have a porta-john at their site, while others were too cheap and would not have one.

Now, for jobsites that were nearby some civilization, you just had to time your sit-down bathroom needs with a trip into town for lunch or some other excuse.

But then on occasion, you'd be doing a house in the far rurals and the cheapo contractor had no job johnnie. This got interesting. If a 5 gallon spackel pail was available, that was preferred; especially if you had one with a lid. Do your business, cover with some wood shavings, seal the lid and toss in the dumpster.

Then you have the assorted challenges such as when no 5 gallon pail is available and you scour to find a sturdy cardboard box or something else disposable that could handle the needs. The wood shavings from drilling holes in the wood studs for electrical wires (when roughing in the electrical) were indispensable in these cases.

Another good challenge is when the contractor has pulled off the dumpster and you were expected to haul out all your own trash (as in the case when doing the finish electrical).

A buddy of mine had this happen to him and a 5 gallon pail was available (with a lid). He did his business and sealed the lid tightly. Put the terrible tub in the work van and throw it out at the shop, right? Well, he got back to the shop and forgot about the pail. And it was a Friday. So come Monday, the owner of the business would always arrive at the shop early and check the trucks for supplies and load up what was needed for the day. He found this pail and wondered what was inside.....cue cursing and screaming as he found out how foul things can get over a weekend when sealed up, heated and cured.

Yeah I would murder...

:D

See I always have a Bucket and a garbage bag in my truck at all times, along with old shirts and napkins...

So I've got one EMERGENCY covered at all times... And then I can toss the bag away.

Apparently the dumpster here at my work is not a sorted dumpster, as I've thrown at least a metric ton of frozen human feces into it in the last three years... And not one single complaint!

****

In the fish house there is one special bucket, that is only the ****ter, always bagged... And I keep a toilet seat in the fish house... Often I slip it in the footer space under the wood stove to "Warm it up."

Then I park my truck at an angle to the house to make a 90 degree double blind... And open the front and rear doors... Then lean back into the B-Pillars and scream "By the power of Greyskull!"

Most of that kind of stuff up here has to get contracted, as with ice you need to build stone breakwaters... Otherwise the weight of the ice sheets destroys the pilings.

My guess is that CM is putting in Roller Docks... Where you roll it in with wheels and cylinders (Often the drums from inside old washing machines) and then set the posts in place... Ratchet it all, and then tighten with a Come-Along.

The real horrendous part is if it's shaped like a T or an L... Because setting that dog leg makes you yearn for a slow and painful death, over that crap.

*****

At least CM you were Hot... When I put my Buddy's dock in this past May I was standing in simple uninsulated leaky rubber waders, in 42 degree water up to my belly button, and the guy helping was barely stronger than your average girl scout, and half as tough!

By the end of that I was so cold and suffering from a degree of shrinkage so severe that it took me a half hour to realize that I wasn't going to have to explain to my wife how I got a cold water sex change.

This was a really long dock. Do not remember exactly how long. It had to go through a big stretch of marsh to get to the lake.

There were 8 and 16 sections to the dock. Then pull out the old wood pallets with all the muck on them bring them back to the area were we had the van.

We would connect the sections as we went, put in the legs, and put the sections we walk on in. The end section used floats underneath the dock to hold it up.

I mean there's no just "One Issue" about a person that is ass cancer to a relationship...

Sounds like you're getting settled in alright to Ohiopyle. (That name still kills, me... Makes me want to Lobby to have Fargo re-named MinnesotaWad.)

As I've learned... Any time you move... Or Move In with a woman... The first 4 months are always hell...
ya we have had some mis comunication ;)

we live in chalk hill just outside ohiopyle

Glad you landed on your feet there man. I like the name Ohiopyle, too. It's a big pile of Ohio, right there in PA.

So my 401K is pretty pathetic looking, as I'm most heavily invested in Money Market funds that are linked to the strength of the dollar...

But I've been busting my hump recently... Rather than giving me a raise, they dropped another $622 into my 401K as a bonus...

Perfect time to add to your 401K, IMO.

Stocks are essentially having a fire sale right now, and are deeply discounted. Buy lots right now, cause it will go up again and then you'll be sitting pretty.

This of course doesn't apply if you're nearing retirement or if you believe the whole economic system will implode, in which case you'd be better off buying an island somewhere that has a source of fresh water and a sustainable ecosystem that you can live on independent of the world of pillaging and anarchy that will ensue after a total economic collapse. ;)

Yeah I was just thinking about how it would be a good time to invest, both for me and for the country...

But I refuse to live by dipping into my equity and reserves... So I'd have to give up fishing, just to make a small investment...

So this came at a pretty good time...

Urban areas and the south, (Where no one freezes to death for a third of the year.) Will be pandemonium.

Where as if civilization collapses... Marlon and I enact what we call "The Backup Plan" and live on the edge of a lake with wood heated Campers & Cabins... Live off fishing and hunting, and canned food for 2 years. And start over from there....

Good morning/early afternoon fellers.

Pretty cool seeing a black bear Sav, must be a nice area to be in. Glad stuff is working out.

Last night we went for a drive down to the pier to cool off after the workout. Big spring tide had flooded out the beach. Saw something on the beach from the pier, looked like a dead body had washed up. So we walked over and it is a big harbor seal (or immature sea lion, head was too tore up to tell) washed up dead. Each flipper and the tail section from the base downward were cleanly bitten off with semicircular bite marks, right thru the bone, and 2 or 3 similarly shaped gashes on the body. Grisly, but pretty cool to see. I was kicking myself for not having a camera.

Looking forward to some fishing this weekend for sure.

Most Americans I know are ignorant slobs who can't survive 2 days without their cell phone, McDonalds or cable TV.

I'd like to think I'm above average intelligence and have the physical capabilities to survive, but admittedly, my survival knowledge is basic at best. I'd probably get injured trying to make something and die from the injury

Surprisingly I think California was like 6th or 7th on the list... But with the Caveat that Cali's is the only state in the union that can sustain it's own population with food if need be, thanks to the temperate climate and nearly constant growing season...

Now what happens after all the gangs shoot the mexicans and then the last few surviving white people have to wander into the fields and figure out how to pick their own Melons and strawberrys...

That in and of itself is a post-apocalyptic novel.

There is a book I was flipping through a couple months ago about sustainable living and survival skills... Juicy stuff like How to make your own shoes, and all kinds of little skills that you don't think of until all of a sudden the sole rips off your boots etc...

The author was a little pompous sounding... But from the 20 mins I spent looking through it... I feel I should have bought it, instead of put it down.

I'll doink around and see if I can find it on the interwebz.

****

Basically what it all boils down to... All hell breaks loose...

If you can't acquire food from the water... You're dead.

The human species has spent something like 95% of it's time from Cro Magnon to now, living off the sea, or in land waters...

You chances of catching a fish, even screwing around, are far higher, than say sharpening a stick with a kitchen knife, tracking down a deer and stabbing it to death, without getting critically wounded, dieing of thirst or hunger.

I've thought about the shoe thing before. I remember as a kid never wearing shoes all summer long and we lived in the rurals, climbing trees, running through fields, going down to the creek to swim, etc.

I am wondering if exposed to the rigors of shoeless existence that your soles don't adapt and get tough enough to serve you. I think yes. Of course this doesn't account for winter in cold climates or possible injury from poisonous insects and other critters.

Most native peoples in temperate climates don't wear any foot wear.

Yeah your feet definitely toughen the less shoes you wear... Pretty much once I get home in the summer I don't wear shoes.

But yeah the old "Don't go barefoot during a month with an R in it still applies.

However in the forest or other rough terrain the lack of shoes slows you down nearly by half, as you have to watch every single step.

They only match up to a pathetic 1%... (Yes Very Lame)

And so this is a "Bonus" over that pathetic 1%...

So right now I'm just doing 3%... They add in 1% for a total 4%...

When my Wife graduates College I'm going to take it up again to the 5% I was doing a few years back.

If it wasn't for the fact that my Dad has been planning my retirement for me... With his investment portfolio and what I call "The Unicorn Money" from when I was sub 16 and doing vile menial jobs...

If it wasn't for those things... I'd almost have to quit this job, just so I could find one with better retirement beneies!

What kind of truck? (Full or Mid)

What took a **** on her?

If it's a full size, and the 4 wheel drive works, the Tranny engages, and the block is in relative working order... You can take it to a construction company and sell it... Or take it to a resort that runs in the winter, and maybe sell it... And you'll get more than the "Parts Money" that you'd get at a dealership.

****

My Buddy's F-150 died on him... And he'd always heard this ^^^^

So he checked with a Construction company that also has ice services and runs a plow crew in the winter... They gave him $2000 for it, and fixed it up just enough to use it as a POS plow truck...

Where as the Dealership only offered $500.

****

But if it's like a 2 wheel drive mid sized... Just bring her to the top of a big hill release the brake and lets her roll into the sea, while bag pipes play Amazing Grace.

Long weekend coming up! Whos fishing?

I leave in 4-6 hours for my buddy's family cabin...

It's the same play my HS buddies and I take our annual Guys retreat at...

My Buddy owns a 1 week share, and lets us use his share while he's teaching in South Korea... He's back for a little while now, and invited me to join him... The cabin is full, and it's all his family members...

But technically his Dad's Uncle Married my Aunt... So Everyone in their tall, bald family always confuses me for some long lost cousin.

And I'm just bringing my tent and camping by myself down by the lake.

(The cabin is 200 yards up on the lake bluff over looking the lake through the 120 foot jack & white pines.)

*****

Here's some quick pics from 2 summers ago...

The picture titled "Homebay.jpg" is actually the view that will be immediately out my tent window when I wake up in the morning...

And I'll be straight out from Eaglepoint (On the other side of the EP pic) where a mated pair of Bald Eagles habitually nests...

So I get to spend 3 days... Wake up, pump a cup of coffee out of my pump pot and watch eagles catch fish...

(I almost bought a 98 Pathfinder once upon a time.)

Hey on the bright side... The gas prices what they are, trucks of any kind are going CHEAP...

My buddy just bought a truck, that's pretty much exactly Fitty's Ranger... Except a 2004...

FXT, XLT Package... All the bells and whistles (Except cloth instead of leather, which is good IMO.)

Booked out at $14,500...

He got it for $9,900... Just because it's sat on their lot for 6 weeks, and no one would buy a simple 4.0 truck.

Good morning ramblers!!

CM, I have never caught a perch LOL, but I would like to load up on them one day.

Nice avi PW. You've been hitting it hard.

No big plans today. I will be going to my sister in laws for a cookout and to watch fireworks and listen to an outdoor concert. They live right above (yes hills here) town and have the best view of anyone around.

I posted this a couple years back if anyone is interested.........

HIGH PROTEIN LOW FAT CHEESECAKE

5 - scoops of Optimum Nutrition Vanilla Ice Cream Whey Protein
2 - 8 ounce package's Fat Free Philadelphia Cream cheese
2- Keebler 25 % less fat Graham Cracker crust
1 - Package of Sugar free Lemon Jello

1) Put 1 cup of water in a pan, bring to a boil, add jello, stir for 2 minutes as directions suggest. Remove from heat Then add 1 cup of COLD water to this.

2) Pour the 2 cups of water and jello into a blender. Now with blender on low slowly add the 5 scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream whey into it, After it mixes then slowly put the Philadelphia Cream Cheese into the blender. It mixes really well.

3) All that is left, is to pour equal amounts into each pie shell, Let thicken in fridge for at least 3 hours
NO BAKING, NO MICROWAVE, TAKES ABOUT 10 MINUTES !!

It has around 100 grams of protein, and around 30 grams of fat per pie.
IT REALLY CURVES YOUR TASTE FOR SWEETS

I put some Cherry pie topping on mine, just adds some calories but NO fat

HOPE THIS HELPS EVERYBODY

Got some nice coals going over here, too, about to toss a tritip on there.

I don't mean this in the usual way when I ask, what are you smoking? Picked myself up a smoker couple nights ago but havent used it yet.

What's the story with the chipmunks Curl? Bait? I bet a big Northern would inhale a neck-hooked and flylined chipmunk, just toss it along the weedline or pull it thru the weeds like a Texas rigged worm. ;)

They were getting in my garage and must have a nest in a pipe we used to use that goes into the ground for our eastroths. I do not like them digging to close to the house so I use a live trap with peanut butter and some corn to catch them

Whew...

Well I've survived yet another trip deep into the great northern forest...

Boy I'm a little beat up...

But I had a damn good trip.

Went up there to hang out with my buddy... And he was kind of running slow... Ended up hanging out a lot with his family. I'm amazed just how much I had in common with every member of his family...

His Dad and I hung out for like 8 hours yesterday while my buddy took a nap and read a book.

That was really cool to get to know a completely different group of people.

Also my friend had his old college buddy and his girlfriend from Korea up there.

So I spent a lot of the weekend taking them out fishing and teaching them to catch sunnies and crappies...

Kind of funny... The "Law Student" boyfriend was hapless, and couldn't even take a sunny off a hook without suffering one of the worst "Spikings" I've ever seen... Meanwhile his Korean girlfriend and the 7 year old girl who was tougher than some 30 year olds I know, got better and better.

By the end of the weekend, the 7 year old girl was baiting his hook for him, he'd catch a fish and his girlfriend would take it off for him!

****

Storms last weekend dropped a bunch of trees... So I volunteered to help clean them up...

Eventually I fell into my usual role as the splitter. Damn I split some **** that I never thought I'd be able to get a maul through... But I sat down into it... And I can easily say "I set a New PR for Log Splitting!"

Eventually their already shaky wooden maul was looking suspect, and I left my fiberglass at home... So when I go back up in August, I'm going to clean up the rest of it for them.

****

Fireworks wise...

There's a family that's rich as all hell up there, and they buy a bunch of mortars and such and put on a 30 minute show from shore...

Rather than take the boat out and sit under it on the water, we instead walked to the bluffs and stood under it.

Pretty friggin' awesome.

****

My Only "Pain in the ass" of the whole trip, was camping on the east facing beach...

Holy Crap, that 5:30 am sunrise comes early after a night of whiskey... And quickly turns my tent into a turkish sweat lodge.

My Camp mates the Law Student and the Korean girl took it a lot worse than I did, thanks to my tent fans and screen roof.

Now when you say you picked up a smoker... Are you talking a Cabinet smoker, for say preserving meat/smoking fish etc... (Which BTW you can use to make your own bacon for half the price of store bought) Or are you talking a Barbeque smoker, for smoking a Pork Shoulder/Chicken/brisket/ribs etc...

So what did everyone end up doing for the nice 3 day weekend?

Not much anything special Friday or Saturday. Played my second round of golf yesterday.

Had a good outing, that was almost great. After the first 5 holes I was 1 over and had picked up two birdies and a par. I finished the front 9 at 5 over (which is about my all time best). I think the heat and humidity got to me by the back nine though, as I only saw one par and no more birdies and scored a +14. So was +19 for the round (an 89), which was respectable for my game, but had the potential to be much, much better.

Two good things here - 1) first time I've ever had two birdies in a round (let alone in 9 holes) and 2) second time I've ever shot under 90.

I'm not that great a golfer and only get out a couple times a year, but I am convinced that bodybuilding has helped me shoot better. I have better muscle control, fatigue is not as much of a problem as it was when I was overweight, resting blood pressure and heart rate being lower helps concentration and swing relaxation, and my posture has improved (resulting in a more consistent swing).

Without any lessons, equipment change or extra practice, I've shaved about 10 strokes off my game the two times I've played this year compared to last year. The only change is improved fitness. No wonder golfers like Tiger and many other tour pros take up some weight training for the sake of their game.

Would you also have access to private information such as full name, address, ordering history, payment info, etc?

If so, I could see that this could be a problem.

However if it was a simple "yes/no" to the "does this poster buy from the store" then it would be good.

No doubt. I gues I shouldn't be surprised when they find new and amazing ways to be a pain in the ass... (no homo)

A joke written by a Woman

Right in the middle of lovemaking, the husband dies of a heart attack.

As the funeral arrangements are being made, the mortician informs the widow that he cannot get rid of her dead husband's rigor mortis hard-on which is sticking straight up in the air and if they don't do something, it will look odd in the coffin at the funeral.

The widow tells the guy to cut it off and stick it up her dear departed's ass.

The mortician can't believe his ears but the widow is adamant, so he does it.

During the funeral, friends and relatives of the dead man were concerned to see a tear in the corner of his eye, but the widow assured them that there was no cause to be alarmed.

Just before the casket is closed, the widow leans in and whispers in the dead man's ear, "It HURTS, doesn't it?"

I had once, night fishing, up north...

I'm trolling along in the darkness, on a frustrating bite, when WHAM... Fish on...

And even though it didn't feel heavy, it was just fighting like crazy!

I mean it felt like I was dragging a Musky Chatterbait through the water not a small shad rap...

Finally pulled it up and there is a rather large blue gill, with the front hook of my shadrap imbeded deep in his ass hole!

We all laugh, and my buddy says "I wonder what he was thinking... Just suspended there for the night, and all of a sudden what he thinks is a minnow comes screaming out of nowhere, bites him in the ass and drags him to the surface!"

That was kind of my first reaction, because the "Master Plan" for my promotion has stalled due to the economy... And right now I'm kind of happy with the stall out... But I don't know that he is.

My Guess is that his Russian mail order girlfriend that left him in Mid-Mid-Life Crisis, has got him all bent up inside.

And I'm guessing he's starting to figure out (AT AGE 50) that true lasting change in life is made by slow progressive steps, and not wild radical big ones...

Because the only things that change fast and for the long term are destructive things.

He's just got a knack for giving a PR spin to ultimately destructive forces, to try to make them seem all rosey and pretty...

But as I've said before "You can put make up on a Pig, but it doesn't make it pretty, and it doesn't mean I'm gonna take it home and pork her!"

She's also decided that she's "Going to be a lesbian for a little while." As she'll be living with her girlfriend... And they've got this great plan to live in the wilderness for a year.

What I find interesting though, is last night I was reading the sequel to one of my old books on Polynesian Mysticism...

Recently I've been bumping my head into what direction to take my next step towards... Been running into a lot of dead ends... Which is always a sign that you're looking down the wrong paths...

Last night I came across this passage in the book, that says "Sometimes when you find dead ends in the path of your life... You should stop, ask your Amaukua (Guiding spirit) to help you find a new path through the bushes... And then pay attention to the events in your dreams and in your life."

And now today... Every where I go, people are asking me for advice on all sorts of topics... All stuff that is right up my alley... "How to cook a steak" "Troubled relationships" "Dealing with substance abuse" "Hey the wax ring is loose on my toilet" "What's the best lure to use when night fishing for walleye."

Maybe I'm crazy... Maybe it's a sign... Maybe I'm just friggin' Human Google?

Are those numbers on par?

I was born 10 pounds 12 ounces, and rocketed up to monsterous proportions... IIRC According to my baby book By age 3 I was 58 pounds, 38 inches tall and eating 21 shrimp and fries when my parents took me out to the diner.

Well I, for one, can relate. Although I tend to give advice before anyone asks. (How did I get these powers? I'm Middle Aged Man!)

For me, I had to leave my familiar-but-stagnant surroundings and the very limited opportunities they presented. That's not a dig at where you live or an innuendo or anything, I was in preppyville CT and just did not resonate with anything or anyone there. At all.

Eventually you get (or, at least, "I" got) to the point where, when you really have looked under every rock, and still have not found what you're looking for;wnen you get to that point, then what? That's one of the problems I had with Small Town, USA, it seemed like the jobs and the people don't turn over fast enough. You get old before your time waiting for a break that never comes.

Nothing changes if nothing changes, as they say. I started over somewhere else, and everything fell into place a lot faster. I attribute that partly to where I moved and partly to the value of starting over with a blank slate once or twice in your life.

See for me right now the appeal is for me to move north to small town USA, and create things. Practical things... Enriching things...

I mean I haven't really "Created" anything in a long time...

What happened to the Nainoa who used to stay up all night and work on abstract paintings... Or the Nainoa who built all his own furniture... Or the Nainoa who used to switch between wine and red bull with classical music in the background and write.

I used to be Leonardo Divinicci V 2.0... And now I'm just a guy who goes to work and goes fishing... Something inside me just feels too... Practical...

As if I've become too "Down to Earth" and "Need to get my head back into the clouds."

I actually cleaned another loin last night...

Out of the blue the accountant decided "We need to have an office cook out." Last year they bought a tenderloin and I cleaned it for a bunch of Fillet Mignons...

Yesterday I sent the accountant out to buy the meat...

He comes back with a full loin... So I took that home and cleaned it up really sharp... Put the fat into my broth bags (God do you want to eat beef stew at my place sometime!) And then Ooops if 2 New York strips didn't accidentally fall into my freezer with the other 12 NY Strips I've got left remaining!

LOL...

Yeah I'm about to make NY strip steaks with Sauteed Red Onion and Mushrooms for Lunch, and all I can think about is my smoked pork sandwhich!

See what I like to do with some smoked pulled pork....

My Buddy works at a bakery... So I just make him bring me large hamburger buns, so fresh that you could tear them if you stare at them too hard...

They get lightly toasted on the grill (Yes Hog fat Sear Marks)

I put the heel down...

The lightest wipe of Mayo (Just for a fat barrier to keep the bun from getting soggy through prep and eating...)

Then some shreaded pizza cheese...

Then a nice heaping pile of Tender, Smoked, pulled pork...

A hearty drizzle of my BBQ sauce made from Rendered smoked Pork Fat, Honey, Vinegar and Red Pepper Flake...

Then a generous sloppy pile of Crisp, Cold, Fresh Coleslaw... A TINY squirt of Mustard...

And then the lightly Toasted Crown...

Served with Baked Beans (Add a little Garlic and Crumbled hamburger to take it up a notch) and some chips... OR home fries, if I'm so inclined.

Beverage... Home brewed, black as the night, sweet Tea (Heavy on the ice.)

An then I don't apologize to anyone who showed up wearing a long sleeve shirt.

After the meal...

Double of Crown Royal on the rocks, and a Chocolate Aroma Cigar.
