That sounds like a great idea. Keep the dishes simple but flavorful. A lot of time restaurants put so much spices and sauces on food you can't taste the best part. You can use all sorts of smoked wood for flavoring. You can serve giant portions of meat. Which would fit right in with the theme.
I have always wanted to buy a small seafood shop along the coast line in the NE area. I would buy all the fresh seafood catch in the morning and serve it for lunch and dinner. Nothing too complicated. Just fresh seafood. Clams, Lobster, Cod stuff like that.
Yeah... A couple of years ago, when I was really taking my culinary skills to a the next step... I kind of let myself get too fancy... Part of it was my Wife..> Then Girlfriend/Fiance and I cooking together...
But then I really started getting fancy and out there... Using a lot of French mother sauces, and **** like that...
Then over the course of the last... Oh... 18 months...
I've been coming back to ground...
Taking simple dishes... Simple foods... And treating them with the same kind of care and love that I do my creative endeavors.
I take simple straight forward ingredients... I Get the best ingredient I can... And then I execute it with purpose and care.
Too much of American cooking is simply a matter of "Making food hot." Or "Season this so it's got a bunch of WHATEVER flavor... And it must be good right?"
So I have this rule...
Don't Fuclk with comfort food!
If it's mashed potatoes... You don't put Peanut butter in it. (Which is actually better than it sounds BTW)
If you want mashed potatoes... And you want to make them good... You use the right kind of potato... Russet...
You don't obliterate it with the potato masher... you break it up with a spoon, so there's a little bit of chunks...
You don't dump a handful of industrial garlic powder into it... You roast some garlic in Olive oil and mince it in.
You don't dump some skim milk into it because you had some skim on hand... You take a heaping tablespoon of sour creme.
You don't spoon some margarine into it, and finish it off with cheap table salt... you use a table spoon of butter and sea salt.
Sounds simple as all hell...
It's goddam Mashed potatoes!
But I guarantee you... If you take red potatoes... And you whip them into a paste, dump some garlic powder into them, and pour some skim milk on it to mix in, with a couple of tablespoons of turkey murdering margarine into it...
And then put my "With Care" mashed potatoes next to them... You'll scrape the other one's in the garbage and ask me if you can have seconds of mine!
******
So one of my new endeavor is finding "High Quality Ingredients."
For example... My current project, from which I'm taking a break... Is growing Heirloom tomatoes.
The modern Grocery store tomato has let me down for the last goddam time!
So I ordered myself some heirloom seeds... Heirloom tomoatoes are breeds of tomatoes as they originally evolved, as they moved around the world. (And got doinked with by the Dutch)
The tomato that you get at the grocery store, or on your hamburger or in your jar of spaghetti sauce... Is a Hybrid... Created to handle mechanised picking... Heavy packing... And long shelf life...
And much like popcorn... Flavor has been sacrificed for the sake of mass production.
So this year... I'm growing my own Heirloom tomatoes... From seed... From breeds that are specifically for nothern climates.
Mostly Russian, siberian, and East German... But I do have one that's Italian.
And the current plan is to keep around a hundred Tomato plants in what will probably become "Nainoa's Tomato Forest."
Now...
Back to building the Seedling cells!

Just sitting around the house and being lazy. I really need to do some work around the house (paint kids room, prepare our bathroom for laying tile, hauling off junk in the garage, etc), but I may just take the wife out to eat a steak.

Hey don't get me wrong...
First time I Heard about the whole PB in Mashed potatoes thing, I was thinking "The first guy who thought that up is going on my list of people I'm going to punch in the face before I die... Even if I have to scratch out the members of the Band "Hanson" to make room for him!"
But then I tried it...
And on the one hand... It's not mashed potatoes, and I can never recognize it as Mashed potatoes, short of being waterboarded...
However... If you think of it as "An Earthy Potato dish." Especially if you don't know that it's actually peanut butter...
It's not bad at all...
That being said... I'm still against it as well...
All I'm saying is that it challenges one's preconceptions.
*******
My new thing that I'm building up the culinary acumen for is my own version of Asian Dumplings... With pot sticker preparation.

As a practical Martial Art... Tae Kwon Do is pretty much the most worthless when it comes to real life application.
I mean really... A Cross eyed wino with a solid beer bottle can kick the **** out of a guy with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
However for a Kid learning something, getting in shape, building confidence, and pushing limits... TKD is friggin' perfect!
As the National sport of Korea, it's tennents are design to be taught to children who begin learning at an early age...
Versus some of these MA's which are meant for adults, and they just come up with a dilluted kid version to bring in extra money.

Well... Considering there is another March Lion Storm coming Saturday night into Sunday... If I were you... I'd work on the car on Saturday.
Anyone North of Iowa is going to be living in a snow cave from the looks of it... There's an inversion layer over head that's typical for May (It's currently 74 degrees over our heads!)... And when that heat energy comes out, it's either going to rain like a bitch or snow like a whore.
******
As for my weekend...
Tonight.... Got some errands... Going to grill some steaks... Have a few beers, and do the final assembly on this shelving unit I created for my tomato seedlings.
Saturday... Is writing day... (Wife is going to some play with her mother.)
Sunday... Wood working and battling the snow storm.

My boys have a lot of energy that they need to burn off. They also need some confidence. They love to wrestle of course, so any kind of 'fighting' in a scenario such as TKD would be great.
There's a martial arts studio near by that teaches several forms of fighting including Jiu-Jitsu. I may look into that.

See now JJ is one of those MA's...
For an adult... It's probably the most applicable of the Martial Arts... I mean really... All fights eventually go to the ground, and that's where JJ is at it's strongest.
But for kids... With all their undeveloped bone structure, and wide differences in strength at different ages...
The only Child level JJ you'll find is going to be a really watered down to make money version.
IMO... JJ is like weight lifting and tackle football... Best if you wait until 12-13 years old to start that direction.

And then of course I grill it over Lump Charcoal... Because I firmly believe the 11th "Missing Commandment" is "Thou shalt not GRILL with Propane."
Propane camp stove... Okay... Propane furnace... Fine... Even using propane flame to heat the wood in a smoker is alright by me...
But Meat... Cooked on anything other than something that was formerly living wood = 8th Deadly Sin.
Going to Hell, do not pass the Pope... Soul Dammed for all eternity.
;)
:D
How I make a steak that would make your grandfather punch Jesus in the face to get another bite of.
Take steak out of fridge... Sprinkle Sea salt and fresh ground pepper on it... "Maybe" an ever so slight sprinkle of sugar, and POSSIBLY a tiny little dash of celery salt.
So how in the hell could anyone go wrong with a meal that man has been loving like crazy for 300+ centuries!
Yeah I'm actually having NY Strip Steak grilled over lump charcoal, broiled asparagus, and popovers tonight for dinner...
He won't even eat a steak or a large hamburger without knowing about it far enough in advance that he can drink a ton of water and get super hydrated...
One time up camping he ate a T-Bone and was drinking... Woke up in the middle of th enight with violent leg cramps and pain.
Another thing that I've pulled out of my ass before... cook weiners (Not Hot dogs) on a stick.
I use this same newspaper and oil effect to start my charcoal for my grill, so I never have ligther fluid flavor getting into my goddam steak!
I get all the fat intake I need from the marbeling on my steak!
Oh man did that kick ass...
I just stood outside, smoking a cigar, sipping whiskey... And then grilled the steaks. (After I butchered the loin etc...)
Grilled the steaks to absolute perfection, over lump charcoal with a gentle rub of sea salt and fresh cracked pepper...
Right now she's making macaroons... And I think later there's talk of me getting a blow job.
In my book... A perfect cup of coffee, is on the list with... Eating a perfectly prepared charcoal grilled Steak, a Blow Job where the chick looks in your eyes and swallows, and holding your first born, as special moments that make life worth living.
LOL...
I see giant knockers everyday... I guess I've become desensatized...
Now if she was cooking a steak over white hot lump charcoal while spilling out of a school girl uniform... And you could see a 13 year old bottle of Cabrenet Savignon in the back ground to go with the twice baked garlic potoatoes, and a side of Broiled apsaragus...
Well sausage fest II went well...
Since I've already got a freezer stocked with a ton of sausage I only two 2 packs... Then my buddy let me take the hams, and grind them up, mix with some of the steak fat from the loins I clean... So I've got a pile of venison hamburger in my freezer... Along with a T-loin.
Like my buddy Marlon said "At least it's your thumb... Could have gone anywhere... Could have gone into your dick!"
See I used to always say "Find a good butcher, and then make him your best friend."
Which I did with my butcher in town... My Best friend did with his country butcher... And my Dad did with his Farm Town butcher...
Between the 3 of us, we could always get our hands on the best of the best, cuts of steak,
Go...
Out...
To Eat...

Actually if you want to try some crazy massive varieties of potatoes...
Gotta check out Peruvian....
Peru is actually where the Potato evolved...
And then explorers brought back the tamest, more flavorless, yet heartier varieties to the new world... Where they got traded around... And took hold in Irish culture, since the soil of Ireland isn't that different from the Altiplano of the Andes.
But if an Incan suddenly stepped through a time portal and you gave him an Irish potato... He'd say "What the hell is this flavorless dirt ball!"
*******
It is funny though... How there are all these beloved foods from Europe...
Dishes made with Corn, Tomatoes, Potatoes...
Yet they're all friggin' new world crops, that were cultivated mostly by the Inca (Tomatoes and Potatoes) and the Aztec (Corn.)

So there was a year before my wife (Then ex-girlfriend who wanted to give it another try) moved back here from the Pacific Northwest...
And I wasn't sure how things were going to play out... But I was still sowing some wild oats for good measure.
I kind of went through a pretty crazy phase there, where I was doing some pretty depraved, hard core, live out your sickest sexual fantasies, with some girls...
And actually you'd be amazed how many girls are really into that level of kinky bizaro stuff!
One in particular (We'll call her Tina) was hog wild crazy about me and she got way into me way too fast. (She had a kid and I think she was happy to be my sex slave for a while, to sink me in as a replacement Dad later.)
So I did my best to end it... And I caught her following me around from time to time. But eventually lost her when I changed my routine up.
*****
Then my wife comes back... I settle down, and I've got some memories in my Spank Bank that make the Penthouse Forum seem like letters to Santa Clause.
*****
So I was just out running some errands... Picking up some potting soil at Wal Mart... All of a sudden I look over... And there's Tina!
I look away, just as I see her look up... And I can just feel it... She friggin' spotted me...
I check out of my line...
There's a person ahead of her...
So I bust ass weaving in and out of the bottom scrapings of the gene pool herd in front of me...
At the last second as I round the corner I see her in the perifery of my vision in hot pursuit.
I get to the parking lot... And I haul ass making good time to my truck...
I look... And I see her in the distance... Trying to wave to me... I get to my truck... Unload the 80 pounds of potting soil at twice the speed of light...
I look and I see her getting into a Red Cavalier... She pulls it through and into my parking lane.
Didn't know what to do... So I just rolled the shopping cart into the lane, so she'd have to stop to move it... And then I hopped in and drove off... Just leaving the shopping cart.
(I felt very much like that guy in the Zombie movie, who knocks over a table just to slow the zombie down.)
I make my get away...
Drive a way... Stop off to get beer. (Keystone Ad, had it on sale for $9.99 a case!)
I get the beer... Put it in the truck
Then walk back into the grocery store attached to it to pick up lunch at the deli.
As I'm walking in with a bunch of people, this red cavlier pulls up, stomps on the brakes at the cross walk and honks the horn.
I didn't look... But I knew it was her... She must have spotted the truck and hunted me down. But I was in a group... So I let the guy nearest flip her the finger, and I made my way into the store.
She must have found a place to park pretty fast... Because I saw her following me as I rounded the first corner.
I quick ducked into the Pharmacy and stood behind a Tampon display...
I watched her come around the corner... Rubber necking for me... And then luckily she headed in the other direction of the deli.
No line in the deli... Got my broasted chicken... And bolted for it.
As I'm making my way through the crowd around the check out and exit...
I hear her in the crowd yell "Nainoa!"
I knew I was busted...
So I stopped looked around really quick like I thought I heard someone say my name but couldn't figure out where it came from. (She's 20 yards away on the other side of the crowd waving her arms like mad, but I pretended like I didn't see.)
I got to the parkinglot...
Broke out in a dead sprint, nearly tackled this little old lady en route to the truck... Tossed my Chicken onto the seat like I was lateralling a football, and drove away.
I didn't see any red cavaliers in my rear view on the way driving back to the office.
*****
It was a funny cat and mouse moment...
But that chick was friggin' crazy... Like Damn near persueing me "Fatal Attraction" style.... The last thing I need is her bumping into me and the wife.

haha You are one lucky guy you didn't run into her with the wife. I'm sure that would of went well. It's funny that she most likely knows you were running from her but I'm sure it doesn't matter. She was still trying to catch up to you.
I have an ex that is the samy way. Probably the craziest woman I have ever had in bed. She was down with everything and anything. Our whole relationship was pretty much based off that. However she was just as crazy outside of the bedroom as she was inside.
Thank god I haven't run into her in a few years. She actually got so bad she carved my initials onto her arm. I had to change my phone number and avoid places that she knew I went to because she would pop up. She was one crazy woman. However I can't deny I had the best time with her sexually.

I had an ex like that...
Chick was an absolute freak... Do whatever you want and she'd always add "Next time pull my hair more!"
Jam a banana in her ass, and make her call you master... Woman wouldn't even flinch... Always try to talk her hot friends into having a 3 some with us...
But outside the bedroom...
God that chick was painful...
For one... Chick was dumber than a bag of hammers!
For two... She was Crazy...
For three... She was always checking up on me.
But the absolute worst one... Was the time she was watching a show with my buddys and I... And I made some crack about "Stupid Unicorns." Or some such thing.
And she point blank says "I think unicorns are real, and they're just endangered as to why we don't see too many of them."
It was a THREE HOUR DEBATE... Mostly spearheaded by my buddy... But she stood by it... Unicorns are just endangered... And it "Might be" a governement conspiracy to hide their existance...
Boy it was hard dumping that chick...

Or I like knocked her up, and she was trying to tell me that I had a baby somewhere out there in the world.
Actually when I first met her it was at a business conference... Got Really drunk (It was during my heavy drinking days.)
Next thing I know, it's 4:30 in the morning and I'm banging her in the stall of the downstairs mens room.
To this day I have no clue what I said or did...
Then I found out a few years later from a friend of a friend of a friend that about 10 months after the business conference she had a baby.
As luck would have it, not too long after that I bumped into her at a grocery store...
Had to figure out if it was my kid... And I wasn't going to ask her in the foyer of a friggin' grocery store... Kid was with... Was ridiculously tall, and had red hair (My Mom has red hair.)
So we exchanged phone numbers, so I could have a conversation or a cup of coffee and find out...
Turned out it wasn't my kid...
Had a couple of beers... Before I know it I'm banging this chick and she's calling me Big Papa, and begging me to PiitB.
So there's difinitely a twisted histroy to this chick!

I just think there's alot of debate period of one-dimensional training because it's benchmarked automatically against MMA.

I compare TKD to the straight up street fights and brawls I've been in... In which it's completely impractical.

Yeah... There are a couple of moves I've used in ABSOLUTELY the PERFECT scenario...
Such as this white belt hip toss in TKD... And a Kempo Elbow Grip...
But for the most part... It still always comes down to the basics... Reach, weight, will, hit mentality (Which is HUGE) leverage etc...
I've had a lot of fights against guys who "Knew" way more moves than me... And if they'd been my size, they would have handed me my ass...
But they couldn't maintain any hold, because I'd just power out of it.
Or even like the one guy who had me in a choke hold I could not break... But I was still able to stand up... And bash him backwards into a wall...
*****
When it comes to TKD... The thing I use it for most... Is Ice Fishing...
There are some Back kicks that are excellent for breaking the skirting loose on the fish house... Taking out blocks, jack stands and such...

LOL @ the hate on TKD
Using TKD is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Unless you're extremely quick, like Bruce Lee quick, it's a waste of time. Learn Judo, Ju Jitsu or any other discipline but that one. I'd love to go back to learning, but there isn't an instructor nearby that's worth a good squirt of dog piss.

Winning really is everything and I don't care what path you take to achieve said objective. ;) I had a guy bite me in a bar fight one night and I damned near ripped his nuts and pen0r loose from their moorings. LOL...
It's like we've lived parallel lives...
I had this guy once... I was wrestling around with my buddys... Was Early 20's or something... And just horsing around... All of a sudden this fat dude smashed his face onto my hand/fist...
Then freaks out, like I punched him in the face. (I would find out later that I was "The other Man" to his girlfriend... But I had no idea... She was just some chick I was dating and banging.)
All of a sudden it's just me and him... He's got me on the ground, and bites my upper trap... like he was a f@g vampire...
I actually managed to jam my thumb up into his adams apple... To no avail...
So for the first and only time in my life... I went balls...
Dude let go... I punched him three times in the mouth... Split the skin on my knuckles... But I also split his lip the long way... From Corner to corner... When he opened his mouth, he got nothing but a heap of shreaded bloody meat from his own inner, upper lip.
He left and went to go see his girlfriend... Who later called me to tell me it was over between us...
Whew!

From what I remembered when I was 18 all I did was go to the Notary and the guy signed over the papers to me. I then registered it and got it insured.

We usually get one last freeze in March and then it really warms up. I believe that we have had the last of our cold weather for a while. That's the nice thing about living in FL. The bad thing is the heat that's right around the corner and Hurricanes.

Both kept in a garage and used only for trips to the doctor and church. The truck looks like you just bought it off the lot.

Daytona is pretty nice. I prefer the beaches around St Augustine though just because they are closer and less crowded.
I've been to Daytona several times (mostly during Spring Break) and had lot's of fun. But now I really don't like to be around the Spring Break crowd or the Bike Week crowd.

I've been there a couple of times when I was much younger. Never heard anything about that lighthouse being haunted. They do have a 'ghost tour' to the old jail that's in St Augustine around October. May do it year round now.

Yeah it was probably one of their best episodes. They had so much stuff happening there that they decided to go back and visit the light house a second time. I'm not a big believer in ghost or anything but they did have some great footage.
They have clips on youtube but it's hard to see the evidence since youtube doesn't have the best quality.

I will have to check it out.
St Augustine is one of those cities that I am sure they could do a whole season on. Being the oldest city in the US, it is full of stories. There's so many old buildings and relics around. There's the 'Old Fort', jail, lighthouse, Fountain of Youth, there's a bunch of old shops grouped together that you can walk through, and a lot more.

Daytona is pretty nice. I prefer the beaches around St Augustine though just because they are closer and less crowded.
I've been to Daytona several times (mostly during Spring Break) and had lot's of fun. But now I really don't like to be around the Spring Break crowd or the Bike Week crowd.

Sounds like a great place to visit. I love old towns and building like that with great ghost stories. I even made a trip up to Boston and Salem to visit some of the old buildings and do some ghost tours. I might have to make a trip to St. Augustine because it sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I've live about an hour away from St Augustine my whole life. I love the place. I've been to about everywhere you can go there and still love going back to visit those places.
The Old Fort used to be really nice. But now they have closed off a good bit of it.
If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend visiting there for at least a week.

Lucky you. I was born in Key West when my dad was stationed in the Navy there. However we moved away when I was 3 so I didn't get to grow up in Florida, which I would of loved.
I was actually disappointed with Salem. It is a small town with nothing really there. Yet they managed to bulldoze everything and make a bunch of parking garages. So most of the buildings from that era have been torn down. The only building left was a house from one of the judges of the trial. They also had all these witch stores where they sell witch crap.
I went there in June so maybe that had something to do with it. Maybe during Halloween they have decorations and more stuff going on. The only thing that I really liked there was The House Of Seven Gables.
Boston on the other hand is a great city. Lost of history, old buildings, and ghost stories. I do recommend visiting. It is one of the nicest big cities I have ever been to.

WTF?
River is the last place you want to put a full body into... The current will accelerate the break down of connective tissue after the Flora in the Gut
"Pops."
You need deep, still, cold water...
That's why you wrap a Body in an old carpet... Secured with Duct Tape and Nylong rope...
Make sure you tie a double ring-shank not in that rope or it will come back to bite you.
Then you have to find a troller guide service on Lake Superior that doesn't ask a lot of questions.
Some places, if you pay double the day rate, and have your USCG certificate, will let you just Rent one of their boats privately...
Which is a lot better, than lugging 2 massive duffle bags with you!
Once she's in the water and on the way down...
Pfft no problems...
The Cold at the deepest parts of superior inhibits bacterial growth, so you don't have to deal that that whole floating problem!

That's one thing that I like about where I live. We get all 4 seasons. We can get 100+ days in the summer and -5 degree days in the winter. Both fall and spring are beautiful here.
When one season is ending I'm about ready for the next season to begin so it works out for me.

Yeah it's kind of funny how that storm redirected at the last second...
It originally had a bullseye painted on me...
And I was all like "Pffft... Bring it!"
Then the last forecast model has it dropping 4-8 on me and 12-16 on you.

And now look... He's going to go up there, fondle your hot rack, impregnate you with Zombie babies and kill you!

Morning all
For any of you guys having to go through the sleep apnea horror or who will go through it in the future my best wishes. Last night was my second night of observation and the first night on the cpap machine.
My biggest bitch is I don't look like the other people that come in for the test. They are all fat and I am not. The doctor says it is all about genetitcs and the size of the neck. I think in a nice way he is saying I have a big fat Irish football player neck.
I just hope it helps because my life has been hell lately. I can't drive because I fall asleep at the wheel. Then I fall asleep whenever I sit down. Then I can be talking to you and suddenly reach out to pick something up that isn't there. I also hope it will make me stop hitting my wife. It is not my fault I just have dreams where I flail around.
What I can't figure out is at one time I was up around 250 and it didn't bother me and now at 200 hundred it is bothering me. Six months ago I was down to 180 and no problems so I am going to go back down to that weight as soon as possible and see what happens.
Rant over carry on.

I feel for you man.
I watched True Life on MTV about a guy who has sleep apnea. He has had over 5 surgeries. He was so bad that broke his jaw and pushed it forward to try and help him breath. They followed him through the operation and when they did the test after wards he showed no improvement. I felt horrible for the guy.
The guy was in good shape too. They just can't figure out whats wrong with him.

I need to get tested for that but I have been putting it off because I don't want to go through the whole ordeal. Back when I was overweight I would wake up in the middle of the night choking. Since I lost a lot of that weight I no longer have that problem, but I still feel like crap in the morning.

Unfortunately... It seems that the soft pallet it kind of like tits on a fat woman... Even when they/you drop the weight... They still droop.
My Wife, who once looked like Lanny Barbie, is starting to put on weight and developing snorring issues that at times are starting to look like Apnea...
Luckily, things have been getting a little better for her in that regard...

Jesus Christ... Is that a spreading ridge with a friggin' plywood bridge?
If I saw that in MN, I wouldn't even cross it unless I knew there was another way off.
Of course up here, anytime you see that it means that there's a heave somewhere on the opposite side of the basin.
ya to the left of that pic is the usa and straight up about 40-50 miles is canada
there is allways a crack there if the western basin "locks in" that crack dosent move much
but there is allways an ice cutter making a path th get ships in and out of detroit so that and a sw wind will allow that crack to move stranding guys on the ice
you can run east to the mainland but the ice is spotty at best that way ........so your only options are run north or south to find a way to cross or a coast gard ride or spend 20 grand and own an air boat

Screw that... Take a sled... And an inflatable dingy...
If it goes... Pop the dingy, tie it behind the sled and water skip it back...

That is what I thougt was so odd, cause naturally they found some guy to say, oh yeah we do it like that all the time. Totally safe.

Well it's not uncommon at all to run into Ridges and Cracks and heaves and such...
Ice is Just like techtonic plates that way...
The thing that you have to be good at is reading, how dangerous it is... Having a back up plan and being prepared.
Starting in a week or two the shore line ice will start to melt here and guys will be building walking bridges to get out to the ice sheets... Later they'll start taking Rubber rafts when the shore ice melts far enough that they can't bridge to it.
But regardless of the time of year... You always have a plan for getting off if you lose the way you got on.
For instance... I build the skirting on my fish house...
That should I get out on an ice sheet and then over night a ridge opens up in the ice road and it severs my way off...
I have 2 option...
Put it in 4H and step on... Power through the snow for miles until I hit an alternate access. (This blows and is hard on the truck... But I'm mindful at my new lake to be within a mile or so of 2 other alternate accesses)
Option 2...
I built the skirting so that I could take it part, and it would build into a bridge strong enough that I could drive my truck over.

Well since you're 5'9" and he's 6'... I have to assume that the "Small" refers to something other than his height?
BTW, did you ever get that pair of Pajama Pants back from him?
