I had a chocolete lab. I regret not training him like I should have.
I left him out side on day with a muzzle on and when i came home( 1 hr) he was panting really bad. So i took him to the vet and they said that it would cost 2k to see him, so i donated him to them. sad day :(

Nice...
Now you're going to have to ask yourself the question... "Topper... Or no Topper?"
No Topper will give you better mileage, and you can get more odd shaped things in the back...
Topper, will give you a place to keep things out of the rain, and an emergency place to sleep if you get some where at night in a storm etc....

I am on the warm edge of all this mess in KY, but Jerry is probably right in the middle of it. Power is most likely out up there. One of the worst ice storms in my lifetime.
Edit: Just voted and OMT is still in 6th place, but only a couple of votes ahead of 7th place. :)
Thanks man. I will be glad when it is OVER...lol

None...they will turn brown. I was thinking last night that I have never noticed when they turn. I'll make it a point to notice this time.
As for your question about Windy...she acknowledges Misty with a sniff and a wag of the tail and then goes about her business. However, Storm hates puppies. He would rather be ice fishing with you rather than being around a pup. And he hates it if it gets under 60 degrees. :)

See now probably... Eh... Not half... But more than a quarter of all the chocolates I've see have blue eyes...
It's strange almost when you look into that blue eyes on an adult dog how you can... I don't know... Feel the intelligence looking back at you.

LOL, I live by "Never say never and never say always". I guess I jumped the gun. None of my chocolates have had blue eyes as adults. It is amazing how a 7 wk old lab can pick up on things so fast. :D I wish I had kept the work up with Windy after she was too old to duck hunt with me.

Okay...
So here's an interesting request for you guys.
The great currents of the universe have me taking my writing in a somewhat different direction...
One of the struggles I have is that I can cut a mean essay...
But who the hell wants to read a book of essays?
When it comes to fiction... I struggle to keep true to the characters.... And I'm sick or writing auto-biographically.
So I'm going to try to present my ideas in a different format, of Fiction...
My own play on Joseph Campbells Mentor relationship...
***I'll spare you the boring philosophical details.
There are going to be 2 chapters in the book, where in the setting, I am a Amature, and I know some of you guys are Seasoned Vets...
One is on a Turkey hunt...
Another is tracking a gut shot deer at Sundown.
In both of these instances "The Mentor" is patiently teaching "The Apprentice." And the Apprentice is making "Rookie Mistakes."
******
Now I could just make some **** up from my limited knowledge... Probably get some **** half-cocked and the reader would let it pass...
But I figured I'd see if any of you guys had some interesting stories related to these events... Whether it was a rookie mistake you made when you went hunting in your youth... Or a time when you had to track a deer at night and got lost in the forest...
Little details that enrich the experience...
Like I said... I could wing it... But I know there's a bunch of guys right here that have got some good insights and stories saved up in the old memory banks, and it's germain to the thread!

Growing up I had a Lab-German Shepher Cross... And I was absolutely amazed how brilliant that dog was from day 1...
Sadly when he was 5-6 years old... He was playing Centerfield. (My Dad trained me to be a baseball power hitter... He would pitch and the dog would field.)
And I cracked a line drive straight out into shallow center field... Dog wasn't paying attention and took it straight to the head.
I can still remember "Fella" dropping like a sack of potatoes...
He recovered... But he was never the same after that...
Vet said it was "Mild Brain Damage."
Dog was always a little neurotic, kind of confused, and isolated.
Lived to be 15... And then one day had a stroke, and he could no longer drink or eat, couldn't even really walk... So we had to put him down.
I still remember holding him when he died, feeling his muscles flex one hard last time and then he just fell limp in my arms.
And I think I will carry that with me forever.

Don't they know it's all about family?
I honestly don't want to know somebody that doesn't care about family. I can understand that there are people who have been abused by family, but the ideal of familial love, is one of the only things really worthwhile in this life.

Wow... So my Wife's Aunt.. Youngest of 9 kids...
She's "Special needs" But functional... It's just been a very difficult life for her etc...
Well recently she had some problem with a detached retina...
They had to do a full MRI to make sure...
While they were doing it, they found the tell tale signs of someone who was shaken as a baby... They figure it's not that she was born that way... But that she was made that way through abuse when she was a baby... And had she just been say given up for adoption would have been completely normal.
I guess she's just been going crazy, freaking out and destroying her apartment smashing family pictures, and trying to flush old christmas presents down the toilet...
Which I guess has not clogged the toilet and is flooding her apartment.
*****
Can you imagine though... finding that out... That the last 45 years of your life didn't have to be that way. She could have had boyfriends a husband, baby, job, education...
Just wow...
Makes me feel blessed to have been born dirty poor... At least I had parents that didn't beat me!

Hey Bro...
How's the boat shopping going?
*****
My guess is the difference in girth between the fish is the difference in their sex...
This time of year the female walleyes are Gravid and just pumped full of eggs...
Where as Males are a lot more on the skinny side.
*******
We had last year on closer weekend...
Had a Newbie with us... And we'd been catching perch during the day...
So when the rattle reel went off, we told him to grab it, for the experience... Figuring it was a perch...
He's pulling it up like it's nothing...
Which usually when it's a big fish a guy starts chimping (Ooooooh--Oooooohh-Ouuuuuuh!)
And you know to get over there and grab the fish for him at the hold, as they're kind of easy to lose on those small hooks once they're out of the water.
But of course... Snow Pea didn't say a goddam thing...
He just pulled this 25" male walleye out of hole, like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
Fish is just flopping and flipping around in the air trying to get free and down the hole.
I just remember yelling "Oh! Shhhhittt!" And I dove across the house to grab it... As did my buddy Spazz...
Fish is flippin' and flopping around... I reach out... Tried to grab the gills... Missed... Got it in a dead hand grip right behind the abdomen, across the back...
Gravid male walleye...
BOOOM Protein Everywhere...
That Sonuvabitch monster jizzed all over the place like a fish semen firehouse from hell.
Painted the walls, the cooler, and all over Spazz's pants...
Which turns out apparently Walleye semen will get your white's whiter than Bleech can ever hope to accomplish!
I swear when I set the fish house up again on the lake lot in May, I could still smell fish and Walleye semen in there.

Knew a guy like that when I was growing up. His mother had neglected him and the result was a loss of oxygen to the brain, which resulted in brain damage.
He was functional, but very limited. And he grew up with a desire to expose himself. Totally harmless, yet he had to be supervised. His elderly aunt and uncle took him in as a child.
I knew him from church.
The youth leader, who was my teacher in HS, Youth Fellowship Director from church, Boy Scout Scoutmaster in the troop I was in, that was sponsored by my church, Sunday school teacher, Choir Director, ETC, used to bring him to some of our functions.
Without the love of his aunt and uncle, our church, and a number of people who helped in myriad ways, he would have been institutionalized for life.
Heatrbreaking and so unecessary!!

About 10 years ago there was grant money available for a study to use fish semen in hair care products. I never saw the end of results of that study. Maybe they need to look into it for tooth whitening? :D

Atmospheric pressure is a powerful thing.
Think about it - at sea level there is 15 pounds pressing on every square inch of surface area. Doing the math, that's over 1 ton (2,160 lbs) on every square foot.
Assuming that freight car is 8 feet in diameter and 50 feet long that's over 1,335 square feet
If there was a vacuum in that container, that's 2,884,860 pounds of pressure being exerted on the container!

My parents have a paid for home in rural NY state that has wood heat and 5 acres of land with plenty of woods on it and some arable land. Get some chickens, rabbits and goats and maybe hunt a little deer (they have deer come up to the back deck a lot) I figure we'd be set. The well is too deep to pump by hand, but there is a good sized stream that runs on the property border, although it would be a pain to schlep water back and forth - great HIIT cardio though.

See we discuss this a lot in the survivalist thread...
The problem isn't finding resources in a rural area... The problem is keeping those resources for yourself.
It's a lot like that old adage... Two guys are standing in the woods, and an argry grizzly bursts out of the forest charging them...
The one guy turns to the other and says "How are we going to outrun that bear."
The other guy takes off running and says "I don't have to outrun the bear... I just have to outrun you!"
*****
Even with a collection of hunting guns, and canned food, water, a little land and an understanding of things like the nixtamalization of corn and first aid etc...
The real problem is when all these guys with next to ZERO survival skills, come pouring out of the Cities (That will turn into Death Camps)...
And I think that will be the biggest problem.
*****
As for what to fuel with...
You can build an ethanol still yourself...
Ferment corn...
Distill the ethanol just like you would some moon shine... You just have to get the temperature just right... And then hold it in a consistent temperature range...
Which normally would be impossible with wood heat... But you can use cast iron as a double boiler, and a thump barrel to get around this...
If I could post attachments I could show you the diagram plans for how to build one...
All you need is a Cast iron pan... a Cast Iron Dutch oven... (water) An old milk jug, a meat thermometer, some copper tube and 2 plastic buckets...
Might need the liberal use of duct tape and some basic soldering skills.

My parents live significantly far from any major population centers. It's quite spare up there. I went to the largest high school in the county and our graduating class was 70 students. The smallest school district had a graduating class of 12 (no joke).
We wouldn't be getting run over by city folks anytime soon up there. And even if marauding bands started becoming prevalent, there are areas even more sparse nearby where we could move the basics to and live in seclusion.
This works out best for me, as I've never believed in killing another man for food or possessions. Self defense in cases where one's life is at stake (or family member's life) is different, but never over a replaceable thing (and all things are replaceable).

Them pouring out of the cities isn't a problem if you're prepared for them. I still say that we're not even close to rock bottom in this economy yet. The stock market is still like a newborn fawn.
You can distill ethanol, make biodiesel and get onboard with solar now. I'm exploring solar panels right now, but they are still astronomically priced. Even the Chinesium panels are fukn kooky in price. If ****head subsidizes them I'ma jump on them like a chicken on a Junebug.

The problem you run into is in the small scale...
Say you've been set up pretty nice for a year... No problems...
And then one day a small family shows up... We'll call them Ethan, Loraine and little Billy.
They're sick and beaten up, starving, and just looking for a place to stay.
So are you going to let them in?
You going to give them some of your food?
What happens when they see how good you've got it, and they ask if they can stay and help you work?
At what point are you tired of doing all the hunting and taking all the watches, and so you hand Ethan a gun...
How do you build the level of trust to give him that gun...
When right now you can easily feed 4 people... You've got 5, Ethan knows it, and little Billy ain't getting less hungry each week.

No wonder why she's working less hours and staying even, I'm working more and getting behind!
You know how they say that when you're married you have good years and Bad...
And I always say "Some days are Diamonds, some days are rocks."
So far Year #2... Is not shaping up to land in the "Good" column.
So let's add the $632 of her taxes I had to pay... To the tally of...
Me paying all the bills (She buys groceries)
And the $1100 in repairing the damage she did to the plumbing system...
And so far, being married has cost me WAY over 2 Grand.

Separate bank accounts?
If income is separate, why should income tax burden be shared?
Oh, and separate bank accounts are never a good idea. Shows an underlying lack of trust and common financial goals. Not very conducive to marital harmony.

Well... We're putting her through school... Since she couldn't handle that in her 20's for some reason.
And we decided to keep our checking accounts and such separate until we have to worry about picking up a big mortgage.
So I told her... I'll pay the bills, and take on all of this, and you work just enough hours to keep up your medical insurance.
Basically... I'm finding out now that she's been completely taking advantage of the situation...

Well for one... The bed in the spare bedroom is more comfortable than in the master.
But basically...
This is the leverage point to get her in line...
She will have 3 choices.
1. Adjust her withholding to Zero. And from now on when I say "Do this with your finances." She does it.
2. I take over the whole house hold finances... She gets the budget that is fair.
3. She writes me a check for $632

Well...
We got it all under control...
Had an Air clearing, with no yelling involved.
(I did all my yelling in the truck on the way home, as I believe that the more yelling you do at someone the less someone listen.)
So my basic "Theme" was "Look... We've got to be a better team... And honestly... You need to get more on board!"
And so we worked our way into "Compromises."
So here's the upcoming compromises...
I have to forgo having anesthesia for my surgery... Whatever... I've done it before... It sucks, it kicks your ass to be awake for that ****... But whatever... Chalk it up to another beating... Small potatoes in the grand scheme.
I pay her taxes... Really... It's only money... I've spent my life fighting against poverty... What matters isn't $500 out of my pocket... What matters is that the family I want to start, that my kids have the chance to have it better than I did... And that means both opportunity... And having parents around for guidance... Working two jobs and never being home is just as much a FAIL as them wearing home made clothes and being the smelly kids.
I keep my clothes off of her treadmill...
Whatever... Her treadmill is in my closet and it never gets used.
I pay $50 a month towards helping her pay off her car. (It's withing striking distance.)
*****
She...
Hits the Treadmill twice a week.
Pays her tax money towards her car over time and she pays off the remainder of the balance (While going to school and working 30 hours a week) By her birthday
She loses 15 pounds by her birthday...
She pulls a 3.87 GPA or better (Which was my graduating GPA)
And if she accomplishes all of these "Goals"... Then I take her to the premiere of her favorite play "A Mid Summer Night's dream." which the local theatre company will be playing around the time of her birthday.

I just ordered 10 lbs of blue corn seeds to plant closer to the house to keep the deer out of it. It's a variety I've never grown before so we'll see how it does. It's supposed to be a sweet cultivar.
133 deer have been harvested and even the kids are getting sick of shooting them. Maybe I won't lose 20+ acres of crops this year. When I see them this summer they will be dispatched. The DNR's latest recon says there are still over 100 in this particular herd.

133 deer....HOLY CRAP. How many acres?
Here are some of the things that I have heard working to keep the deer away from gardens and such.
Kerosene soaked rope....bailing type, put up like an electric fence.
Hair from a barber shop scattered around the area.
Pissing as much as you can around the perimeter.
Of course, if you are talking a huge area...these ideas won't work good.
BTW, I may run out of venison breakfast sausage this year (I made over 50#'s). Sounds like I need to shoot more than 4 and get a bigger freezer before next year.

Driving up to go ice fishing this morning... I blew a coil in my truck.
Luckily I was only 20 miles from home... So I managed to limp back...
At least I think it's a coil... Might be an upstream censor... Which would be cheap.
Coil... One... Should cost me $40 in parts, and whatever... Probably $50 in labor...
But when one goes... It means the other 7 aren't far behind. So you just know if I do this one... A couple of weeks from now it will be another one... Then another one...
So the "Smart Thing" is to just do them all right now.

Estimate on the truck, for 1 coil, 8 plugs and a full tune up... $450...

Still... The tune up and plugs will extend the life before coil failure in the future.

For a young team, that kind of doesn't know how to win yet... I thought it was a matter that they exceeded expectations.
I can't believe the Steelers didn't run it more...
If the steelers would have stayed on their ground game they would have destroyed the cards.
So each team kind of screwed up... In that the steelers didn't run as much as they should, and Arizona didn't start throwing to Fitzgerald until it was "Almost Too Late."

If you can make any of the repairs I listed you should have no problems. You will need LOTS of wobblies, extensions, & small drive ratchets. I changed my own for about $100. You don't have to remove the fuel rails, just loosen the one on the driver side. There was a good how to article on ford-trucks.com (I think). It took about 3 hours the first time. I could do it in 1.5 now that I know the "tricks". Small hands help too....I would be cautious of doing it in weather too cold though. The engine should be cold, but all the plastic connections could be VERY brittle in extremely cold weather.

Yeah I'm going to see...
I think I'm going to Bite the bullet on this one for 1 coil and 8 plugs + Tune up...
And then it should get me at least into the spring (Or better hopefully.)
In the spring I end up with a lot of short distance towing... Which should tell me how the older 7 handle the load...
If one goes...
Then I think my Father in law and I might spend some time together and change all 7 coils.
I just want to avoid a situation where I change 1, then a month later change another, then a month later change another.

Bat rays school up by the tens of thousands sometimes out here. Look just like the cownose rays. My gf and I were surf fishing one day in August near La Jolla, and there were sooo many 1-2 foot rays in the shallows and wash that you couldnt even wade in. They'd be bumping into your feet and ankles constantly which is just to weird-feeling to ignore. Plus, they have stingers for when you step on one. That was surreal they stretched up and down the beach for miles, thousands and thousands of bat rays, all this same size, cruisng in the shallows and wash prolly scarfing up sandcrabs.
Here's a photo of a big bat ray from san diego bay I caught from shore on 10 lb mono. Used that 36" lobster hoop net to bring it up from the water onto the dock, never actually used that thing for lobster. Maybe 25 lbs or so.

Thanks bro, been real busy. Training is going good. Job is going good. Fishing has been slow. Boat shopping continues. Trying to work something out with a nice Chapparal walkaround cutty I can prolly get for seriously cheap. Trouble is he's kind of far away. So we're trying to coordinate an indepedent inspection, followed by an offer from me, followed by figuring out how to get the thing here. My truck can tow it but it's a heavy boat and I wouldn't be 100% comfortable towing it that far the very first time.
1990 Chaparral 20 foot
150 V Pro Johnson O/B
9.9 Johnson kicker
8'Beam, Cuddy Cabin, Porta-potty, Fish Finder, VHF Flow Miser, 2 insulated chest w/ overboard drains, Canvas Bridge Enclosure, Boat cover, Galvanized tandem axle trailer w/ tongue surge brakes and good tires, all safety and CG-required accessories
http://i39.tinypic.com/ioq0y9.gif
What's the dry weight of the boat?
What's the tongue weight of the boat?
The Tow Capacity of your truck?
The rating of your leaf springs?
If the Tongue weight of the Load (Boat) exceeds 12% of your Leaf Spring rating... Then you might be in for a Trailer Sway incident...
Which the more the load weighs, in comparison to the weight of the truck, the harder it is to stop a sway from happening at high way speeds.
Other than that... "Pulling it forward" isn't what's rough...
Now backing that monster in... Your first time... Well... There's sure to be a lot of swearing!

Good morning ramblers. OMT is in 7th place this morning. My parents and 5 of 7 siblings are still without power (1 wk now). But, they are all rural Kentuckians and are prepared for things like this.
if any of you kentucky guys survived the ice storm answer me this:
have you been to rockcastle river? we're planning on a week long canoe/camping trip just wondering how the fishing is
You still going to Louisville?
I've never fished the river, but I can probably get you some info from one's who have. Where are you putting in and when are you planning to go?

I'm running a program that says it's voting every 6 hours, I also cracked the whip on my asshats to get them in gear.
 thanks
Yeah I'm going to see...
I think I'm going to Bite the bullet on this one for 1 coil and 8 plugs + Tune up...
And then it should get me at least into the spring (Or better hopefully.)
In the spring I end up with a lot of short distance towing... Which should tell me how the older 7 handle the load...
If one goes...
Then I think my Father in law and I might spend some time together and change all 7 coils.
I just want to avoid a situation where I change 1, then a month later change another, then a month later change another.
****
But for now... In this cold... It's the best I can do.
Don't change the coils until they go down. They are made to be independent of each other. Just money for nothing IMO. It literally takes less than 2 minutes to change a coil & boot (if you have the tools ready & it is one of the easy ones to reach).

Yeah my Mechanic jokingly said "The front 4... Is like 15 minutes." The back 4... Is like 3 hours."
****
He just called me with the Diagnostic report...
#6 was misfiring... The 4 plugs on the driver's side of the block were about to go, but the other coils looked fine... And he's going to change the Fuel filter, as it's WAY over due.
He said "Basically, there's no telling how long before another coil goes... Might be 10,000 miles... Might be 50,000 miles... Just keep some money in the underwear drawer, and do them as they come."

Sorry to hear that pal. I'd love to have a fishing buddy. But what can you do, as all know times are tuff and the **** hasnt even hit the fan yet.
Re: the boat and trailer, thanks for the pointers and the concern, all that stuff checks out. It's just a really long way to tow. Once it's here, the launch ramp is literally 5 mins away and is as flat as can be. An slip would be abt 150 a month. Not sure which way we'd go on that. But that's just one of the options.
Today we agreed to have a marina in Phoenix check it out thoroughly and split the cost up to 100 bucks for me. If I buy the boat we roll that into the price, if I dont, I've saved myself some trouble, maybe a lot of trouble. **** the gas would almost be that much driving there; it's a 450 mile roundtrip to the halfway point.
I'll probably end up offering to pay him to drive it here if I decide I want it. It all depends on the inspection and what kind of deal we can make.
Here's another contender

Yeah... Phoenix to LA... That would be a painful tow gas wise...
But at the same time... If someone asked me to tow it to them... At that distance... I'd roll that into the price to the point where it would be worth their money to come pick it up themselves.
****
My other question would be... If this boat is in Phoenix... That means it's been running in Fresh water?
Beyond obviously making sure that it has a salt water engine... Have you looked into any other concerns with taking a boat from Fresh to salt?

That boat has trailer brakes...
I'd call you mechanic and ask him what it would cost to get your Dakota set up for trailer brakes...
Very friggin' handy thing to have if you do end up having to go get... Both for stopping... But also for a progressive way to stop a trailer sway incident.

When I was in that area... I left Murpheesboro Tennessee, and a Tornado came 2 hours later and tried to wipe it off the face of the Earth...
Then I go to leave Paducah... And 2 hours later a tornado tried to wipe it off the face of the Earth.
In Rockford my buddy, half dazed 2 hours before dawn asked "Should we get a place to stay?" And we decided to push on straight, figuring with our luck Rockford was about to get wiped off the face of the Earth by a Tornado.

What kind of trailer port do you have on the back of the Dakota...
Is it a standard, 4 plug thing...
Or is it a port that you can put different adaptors into?
If it is Tongue activated, he'll need an adaptor of some sort correct?
Or does it just read off the hot tail/brake light lead?

Glad you're enjoying the F-150...
I actually blew a Friggin' coil this past weekend!
First serious repair she's made me do in almost 3 years of having her...
Watch out for that though... She popped just under 91K... A tune up would have bought me more time...
Just another vote for doing regular maintanence!

Almost zero things have happened to mine too. I told burlyman all that had happened, but I forgot to say that I replaced my OEM battery this past year....it was 7 years old.....Darn Fords.....I mean I don't have time to be bothered by things like changing oil....lol (yes Chevy hate).
On another note....I am the unhappiest I have been in forever at work.....new programs & new bosses making easy things difficult, uncomfortable...for the first time in a long time I feel unsure of myself again.

Yeah I was talking with my wife... Who has known me for 14 years... And we went to High School together (But only dated Senior year.)
And she said... "I know you've driven other vehicles... But somehow in my head... I can only picture you driving that truck!"
That truck has gotten me through some serious, serious crazy ****.
Coming up on the 3 year anniversary... I should start writing up some "Truck Stories." To celebrate the battles Sonja and I have been through together.

Yeah I hear ya...
Before the economy went down I was trying to get out of here... Now it's stable pay for at least 12 months, (Which is better than most people can say) and I have to Kow-Tow to my retarded masters for meager wages.
I think the world is officially stuck between "Hang In there" and "Oh ****."

I think one of the thinigs to really look at is that if we don't fall into a depression...
When we hit the point where we're coming out of the recession, there's going to be a lot of new job creation opportunities and markets... And guys in our position in life will be poised to start our own small companies, or fit into jobs that have a higher enjoyment factor...
But right now in history...
We're at that point in the night... Where it's cold as hell, and you're laying in your tent down on the beach shivering, wide awake and wondering when the pre-dawn grey is going to show up.
So it's the "Hang In There" and pull another blanket over you part of the night.

I'm actually taking my wife fishing this weekend...
Heading up just for a day trip... Catch a couple of perch... Then after Prime time I'm taking her over to "The Landing" restaurant... She's been wanting to dine there since I brought home a menu last summer... So it was kind of our compromise of what to do on Saturday.

Yeah... Or someday everyone in the ramble will come together and start our own company "American Nature."
Where Rich Sonsovabitches pay huge sums of money...
And then we guide them on all the great hot spots of North America...
Ripper takes them hiking in Vermont... Greenfeather takes them Crabbing on Chesapeak, You and Storm taken the Turkey hunting in Kentucky, Fitty takes them Walleye Fishing on Lake Erie... I take them musky fishing in Minnesota... Flying V takes them Kyak Fishing on the Pacific, Jason shows them how to download their photos off the internet, and fish a Barbie doll out of an unflushed toilet!
:D
For $50,000 some rich douchebag gets to experience the best Hunting, fishing, hiking and camping on the North American Continent.

When we were first living on our own in 1994 my buddy's Dad gave him a TON of groceries... All stuff that was questionable expired... Some of it wasn't bad at all... Un opened Box of Cereal a week past the expiration date, cans of soup that were a week or two past...
And then there was the can of Fish *******s...
Thing was expired in the late 80's Ends bulging out more than Delta Burke's Vag.
Just WTF dude... Ever heard of Bocculism...
you know... the friggin can ain't bulging like that because the factory just over stuffed the can for extra goddam value!

its a 12 footer. I bought a minkota with my discount through dicks... got it WAAAYYYY cheap. we're looking for a small outboard to go with it but not sure of how big to get since we're new at the whole boating thing.
this weekend we're going to sand it down and give her a new paint job.

Transom Mount I take it....
How many pounds of thrust?
****
My Buddy's Dad has a 16 foot buck boat, and a 2 Horse runs that around at 2-3 MPH... Back before I had my boat, we ran around in it... Had to be patient and didn't want to push you luck with weather. But it was fine.
12 foot jon with 40 pound Transom mount trolling motor, should actually kind of cook... Would it be nice to have a kicker... Sure...
But considering the space taken up by a Kicker, the pins, the gas tank, fuel lines, mini tool kit...
Versus just a Trolling motor and 2 Gel batteries...
Meh...
I'd stick with the Batt's and TM... And get your feet wet, as the case may be before you decide how much more of an investment you want to step up to.

It depends on what you're fishing for, but you can never go wrong on the East Coast fishing with shrimp. You have to give us some more info on what you want to target and I can help you out with rigging and baits.

Oh yeah... You're golden...
55 pounds on a 12 foot john boat, should be just fine.
I mean do you want to be out in 3 footers in a wind storm with just an electric... No... But that john boat isn't meant to be roaming around large lake basins. It's for Back Bays, resevoirs and such.
But Pricing down there is a little higher than up here... 55 pound thrust TM up here is $159 (But of course supply and demand changes by location.)
******
I run a 45 pound Bow Mount on my 16 foot deep V... On the one hand... I really wish I would have bought the upgrade when I got the boat... Because going up to the 60 pounder I wish I had... Is outside the budget. (Bow mount Trolling motor is easily triple the cost of Transom mount.)
But still... On a low wind day, she gets me up to 2.3 MPH... Which is all I need for Walleye Trolling anyway.
Fastest I've ever gotten her up to with a strong tail wind was 4.38 MPH.
******
You next focus should be on Batteries.
I'd go out and buy a Brand new Marine Deep cycle 12V battery... (Fleet Farm has always been good to me price wise for these.)
Recently though... My buddy works at a Medical Supply Company... One of the things they do is repair and replace batteries from powered wheelchairs and such.
Once a battery shows a little lack of performance, they get returned pretty quick. I mean for a crippled person a dead battery has got to be a nightmare.
So they have all these batteries in their recycle bay... And half of them are at 85% of capacity...
So every now and then he swipes 2 of them for me... And we find out what the capacity is... And I send him back with any that are lower than 85%
Then I change the leads, and they become my trolling motor or fish house batteries.
******
If you electric is the only motor you run with... Always travel with 2 batteries.

Sh...sh...sha......shark. :D That is all we caught while at Tybee Island a year and half ago. It was fun, but I wanted a cooler full of fillets to bring home. Shark had to be 4 ft in order to keep.
Edit: Here's a pic of Shelia w/ a 3' shark. It was caught out in the backwaters, but they were easily caught from piers as well.

Looks like a Dusky or Sandbar shark. It is a female shark, good to eat though, but a pain in the ass when you're targeting other species.

Hey there are worse ideas in this life than having a six pack of beer with your buddys in a 12 foot boat, with sub standard PFD's.
It's just most of those ideas involve barebacking a tranny hooker in a bathtub full of dirty needles.
